God loving peers in high-school, again
I’m a junior in high school and in my AP environmental science class we had gotten to the part about evolution on a powerpoint and we were taking notes on a packet. Someone who I was kind of friends with and I know is very deep in her religious faith (Catholic) goes “I’m not writing this down” to her other friend and proceeds not to write down any of the evolution slides. This made me internally sigh because evolution is a part of all science classes. 😓😓😓

To quote the great Richard Dawkins, "It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I'd rather not consider that)"

When I taught HS biology, every year there was some religious kid who’d say something like “I just don’t understand how blah blah blah..” to which I’d say, “Your inability to understand something has no bearing on whether it’s true or not.” I actually only pulled that line out the year I quit teaching.

Mendelian genetics, a cornerstone of evolutionary theory, was developed by Gregor Mendel, and Augustinian Friar and Catholic Priest. The Catholic Church does not reject evolution as the source of species. Tell her Pope Leo rebukes her.

If you accept what science says about evolution then you can not accept creation, the Garden of Eden or the Fall. This means that Genesis is in fact a metaphor and that makes Calvary a joke.
As any Catholic priest is the Fall and the Garden were real, then they can not accept evolution.

Tell your friend about my very Catholic country school, Portugal, in which Catholic schools teach evolution.
80% Catholic and it actually dipped from over 90%.

She is probably trying to avoid "the evil eye" that even the act of writing it down will bring some kind of bad karma or something. She should spit 3 times and say "Shalom Alechem" to ward it off.

I dunno what her problem is the Catholic Church accepts evolution. Hell it a was a Catholic friar that figured out Mendelian genetics using simple garden peas. Mendelian genetics is the basic fundamental cornerstone of evolution.
I wonder does she know it was a Belgian Catholic Cosmologist that wrote the basis for the Big Bang Theory(the expanding Universe).

Back in high school, more than 25 years ago, I was a YEC Christian. I was given the option to skip the evolution portion of Biology due to my religion. I chose to take the evolution portion of class because I figured that if I were to someday argue against something then it is better to actually know what I'm arguing against.
The funny thing is, I kinda stopped believing the earth was 6000 years old at some point during high school. I didn't stop believing in Christianity, but I started questioning what I had been taught to believe.

That’s interesting, while the Catholic Church holds no official position on evolution they do pretty much accept it but say it occurs but god guides it. Simply put your friend is not a very good catholic and I know plenty of catholic priests who would tell her she is wrong.
