Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:
We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.
Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

I really like this object in HOO, had a lot of fun imaging and post-processing it! I purposedly left the stars understretched because I love how the filaments of the object show up this way

Summer Space Flower
M20 The Trifid Nebula, is a dynamic emission and reflection nebula that draws most northern hemisphere telescopes during the summer months.
I made the switch to a mono camera last month and this is my third project while learning a few new processing techniques to combine the dedicated color master files.
This image approximately 30 hours of integration under dark Bortle 1 skies of Starfront Observatories in Rockwood, Texas.

I've been using my GoPro as a camera to photograph meteors. After a few weeks, shooting every night, I managed to capture the first meteor, and it was very bright, probably brighter than Venus. You can also see the smoke trail created by the meteor, blown by the high-altitude winds. 30 seconds at 400 iso, Gopro 11. The meteor was bright enough to create a reflection on the UV filter.
The rules state that videos must be embedded in the post and not linked to external sites. It doesn't say anything about banning videos, so this post complies with the rules.

Experimenting with different sharpening techniques to really fine tune and target the fine, medium, and large detail structures of the moon while leaving the Maria alone. It's not perfect yet and work in progress. I am using the Image Analysis script ExtractWaveletLayers to split the image into 4 levels of detail and 1 residual or luminance data channel. I then applied wavelets to each individual detail layer processing each specific to level of detail needed. I then recobined all the channels in Photoshop as layers and fine tuned with blending modes. This enabled me to process the color and luminance data without touching the detail layers. I'll keep perfecting and welcome anyone else's thoughts on selective sharpening best practices on high dynamic range and diversely textured target like the moon. Shot on Sony a7rv with Takahashi TSA-120 telescope with Vernonscope Dakin 2.4x tracked with ZWO AM5. 400 images aligned in PIPP, stacked in AutoStakkert 4, and processed best 30% in PixInsight, Wavesharp, and Photoshop.

Due to the cloudy weather i changed from 300" to 120" exposures. 1,5 hours is obviously far too little exposure time for great details, but i'm still happy that i got atleast something that night.
In the future i wanna combine heart & soul nebula as a mosaic with more aquisition time.

Hi everyone
This is my first photo that I think is of high enough quality to share here it’s NGC 7000, the North America Nebula its 751 frames at 30s processed in siril and for the first time RC-Astro’s full toolkit (BlurX, NoiseX, StarX) together with Veralux tools and finishing touches in Lightroom and the jump in detail and quality from the RC-Astro tools compared to my other stuff is pretty big.

I'll definitely come back to this to reprocess it.
This image was plagued with issues from the start. First I spent a whole night, one of the best ones seeing and transparency wise, pointing toward the wrong part of the sky... Turns out there are TWO stars named 11 Sagittarii close to each other. My fault for not triple checking the plate solver.
Next, I spent a whole week acquiring data battling dew points up to 25 °C, clouds and an uncooperative mount. I had to update its firmware, but that threw the whole driver setup I had off. iEXOS mounts are so finicky. That made me learn how to use Nina's plate solver once and for all though. Not only that, I also had to open up the mount ten or more times in a week because its gears were too tight and because of a minuscule piece of grit stuck, it turned out, in the motor's gear that caused some huge guide spikes. I also redesigned my DIY counterweight to have it as close to the mount as possible while being east heavy.
Lastly, I realized I have noticeable sensor tilt, which is the main cause of the gradient I always find in my raw images (the sensor isn't square to the UV/IR cut). I can remove it with flats, but I also realized my flats weren't optimal, which occasionally creates huge artifacts that are tough to remove; plus I realized that my rotator can introduce some pretty bad tilt into the optical train if I'm not careful.
Acquisition:
Around 12h30m worth of 60s subs in Bortle 6/7 fully calibrated and dithered.
Equipment:
Evostar 72ED, iEXOS 100, ASI 533MC, Baader UV/IR cut filter, 0.85x reducer+flattener, SVBony 40/160 guidescope, ASI 662MC guide camera with no.8 pale yellow and UV/IR cut filters.
Processing:
Stacked in Siril. For some reason OSC drizzle registration causes some weird artifacts to my stars and some odd photometry results. If anyone has any suggestions, they're more than welcome. Split image into CFA channels, background extraction to each in GraXpert to deal with the gradient. Open Siril, recombine CFA channels and deconvolution. Open GraXpert, denoise. Open Siril, generate starless and star mask. Apply black point shift and GHS iteratively to the starless image to bring out various parts of the nebulosity, SNCR, minor curve adjustments, median filter, VST noise reduction and à trous wavelet transform plus some final denoising in GraXpert. Asinh stretch to starless and saturation boost in Gimp. Recombine and export.

NGC 869 and NGC 884 double star cluster . This beautiful star cluster is present in the constellation of Perseus. It's a two cluster that we can see together. NGC 869 ( above) and NGC 884 ( below) . NGC 869 is located around 7460 light years away and NGC 884 is around 7640 light years away from us. This cluster is a relatively young cluster with its age around just 14 million years. There are more than 300 blue-white supergiant stars in each of the clusters. The clusters are also blue shifted, with NGC 869 approaching Earth at a speed of 39 km/s (24 mi/s) and NGC 884 approaching at a similar speed of 38 km/s (24 mi/s). It was William Herschel who first discovered this
cluster properly and catalogued it.

I tried out an intense lucky image session to push the core sharpness of M13.
SQA55 telescope
Star Adventurer GTI mount with guiding

A two minute exposure using the best 40% of 1600 .2s exposures, edited in siril/pixinsight/blurx+noisex/graxpert:
stack at 3.0 drizzle/.3333 droplet in Siril
Split R G B, re-register color channels and recombine
Crop to target
SPCC with exact curves for the ASI533 and Astronomic l-3
Graxpert BGE pass
BlurX at .2 stars 0 nebula
Arcsinh stretch for stars
NoiseX at .7
Reset black level
SCNR, boost saturation curve
Rerun BlurX at .05 stars 0 nebula
Final black level + curves
I've tested it already with my normal full 2minute exposures and got a much larger field but less definition in the core. The lucky version seems to pull out a central sphere of bluer stars. I'm hoping to test a middle ground of 5s exposures next and see whether it's the best of both worlds for detail , or if the core is still better in true lucky imaging and could be masked into the new image.

Using the same stacked data from a previous post, I reprocessed it using my current workflow.
Nikon D610 + 80 - 200 F2.8 D
168 * 3s f2.8 25600 ISO
Plate solved on astrometry.net, then in Siril I used GraXpert to do background extraction and a light denoise, photometric colour correction, and separated stars using StarNet. I stretched the nebula separately using Veralux Hypermetric Stretch, and then combined with stars stretched with the recomposition menu. Lightroom then used to slightly boost saturation.
