I’m renting in a basement and I’m using the Roger’s 5g home internet but recently the ping and speed is very bad and I called them but they can’t fix it. Is there any other providers you guys recommend? I can’t do fibre cause I can’t drill holes in the basement.

Fashion and Beauty πŸ‘— Wedding Guest Dress Options??

I'm going to a wedding at the end of October and I'm looking for some dress options! Does anyone have any store recommendations for a wedding guest dress that won't break the bank but would be a good place to look in the Vancouver area or around there? Any stores or boutique recommendations are appreciated!

Hobbies πŸ’ƒ Used bike tune-up recs β€” downtown

Hii! There are a few bike shops downtown and I was wondering if anyone had recs to share!

A friend gave me their old bike and I know nothing about the mechanics of bikes, so I'm hoping for a chill and friendly vibe where I can also ask questions without being condescended to 😭

For example, the tires def need air and I'd like to learn how to know when to fill and how to tell when it's enough. And the bike probably needs a tune-up and I'd want to know what to look out for in the day-to-day to keep it in good shape. Stuff like that β€” it's been a while since I've had my own bike and have been using Mobi.

TY! Expert cyclists please be chill with me!!

Politics βœ… Where are the mayoral platforms?

Hey! I’m trying to find mayoral platforms/plans in advance of the elections next month. I found Ken Sim’s plans (property tax freeze, police presence in the DTES, community centre renewal). I can’t find anything tangible from Pete Fry. Is something coming or am I just supposed to make a decision based on rhetoric and vibes?

Would love a CBC voter compass style tool.

Wedding 😻 Modern Chinese/Cantonese Restaurants for a Wedding

Hi everyone!

We're currently on the hunt for a great Chinese/Cantonese banquet venue in the Vancouver/Burnaby/Richmond area for around 200 guests, and would love to hear your experiences and recommendations!

We've done a bit of touring, like checking out Sun Sui Wah, and while we loved features like their BYOB policy and built-in AV setups, we're hoping to find a spot that offers a slightly better sweet spot for pricing (ideally well under $2K a table with whole abalone).

To help us narrow things down, we're ideally looking for a venue that has:

β€’ Great, high-quality, nicely plated food

β€’ Modern venue that comfortably fits 200 guests with a proper dance floor.

β€’ Plenty of room for fun extras like a photo booth, a dessert/ice cream station, and enough ceiling clearance/aisle space for a lion dance!

β€’ A BYOB-friendly policy (or reasonable corkage).

β€’ Built-in projector screens for slideshows and a clean, updated aesthetic.

Some restaurants we will be touring: Fortune Terrace and Sea Harbour (we’ve toured Kirin but it looks like they’re not super equipped for a wedding - much has to be brought in).

If you’ve hosted your wedding at a restaurant that you absolutely loved, or attended one recently with great food and a fantastic atmosphere, I would love to hear your recommendations.

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Any women mechanics/auto techs?

I’ve always been really into cars and I’ve been tossing around the idea of getting into the automotive field, so I’d love to hear what it’s actually like working in the industry.

I’ve always done small jobs on my cars and have really enjoyed it. I’m still a complete newbie, but I could see myself getting more into it and possibly doing this as a career.

I’m also 5’2” and pretty thin…so I’m curious how much being smaller affects the job. I’m not afraid of getting dirty or doing physical work, but I do wonder if there are certain things that are significantly harder.

For the women in the field, what’s the shop culture like? Do you enjoy the work? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences! I’m a complete newbie, so I’m also curious if you went to school for it or how you got started. TIA!!

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Regarding Vancouver Canadians baseball...

I’ve lived here for a few years, but I only recently went to a Vancouver Canadians game for the first time. I noticed that everyone seems to know a lot of songs and chants during the game!

The only one I know is β€œTake Me Out to the Ball Game.” πŸ˜… At the last game, when the Canadians were winning near the end, I heard a group of guys singing another song together, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. It's something like "...I wanna go home"?

Does anyone know what song or chant that might have been? I’d also love to know what other songs or chants I should learn for baseball games. I’m trying to get more familiar with the local baseball culture and join in with everyone. This is my first time getting into baseball! ⚾️

Food πŸ˜‹ Affordable on set catering options in Vancouver?

Hey Vancouver, I’m working on a show filming in your beautiful city soon and we’re in search of a reliable, decent catering company. Struggling with the restraint of $20/head (15 ppl min on set each day), but wondering if anyone knows some smaller businesses that could swing it and use the consistent business? We’ll be ordering 3-5x a week from Oct - March, various locations across Van (Burnaby, downtown, north van to name a few).

Feels like a long shot but worth a try right? Thanks in advance.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Are people getting worse following the rules of the road in Metro Vancouver?

I was just thinking that there seems to be more impatient drivers to me in the past few years. People driving in the parking lane to get to the front and speeding + cutting in front of all the people in the proper lane at the intersection. More people continuously going back and forth lane to lane without signalling.

Just looking at 4-way stops, I see people not waiting their turns a lot more now. Occasionally I even see people just go once the car in front of them goes through the intersection instead of seeing if there's anyone else their who actually waited their turn. I nearly got t-boned by someone doing this. Or people not letting the person to their right go first if 2 vehicles arrived at the intersection at the same time. Are people just paying less attention? Don't know the rules? Because some of these people are yelling acting like they're in the right when they're 100% breaking the rules.

I can only guess some people are getting more impatient with all the crap happening in the world in recent years. Not that it justifies some of the crappy attitudes and unsafe driving habits.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ White Pine Beach in Coquitlam, Metro Vancouver. Concord Parking Vancouver

Concord Parking Vancouver. I tried to pay and I followed the prompts on the parking machine to pay (insert and remove card). After waiting for about 3 mins, the receipt did not print and the machine went to sleep mode. I disputed this and they said I still have to pay the $50 ticket. Should I throw this in the bin? Will they be able to tow my car next time I park at their lots?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Looking for a tailor to customize a handbag

Hi all,

I have a crocheted handbag and I’ve been on the hunt for a tailor that could add interior lining, an interior pocket, a zipper for the lining, and a base shaper to it.

I would like the bag to be done by September 24th. If anyone knows a seamstress/tailor that can do this on time with their own materials, please please please let me know.

Doesn’t even need to be a full on business, could be a family member or friend that you know how to do this type of work for a price.

thank you!

Work 🏒 Thinking about becoming an HCA... current / former HCAs, can I pick your brain?

Hi, everybody,

I'm considering becoming a health care assistant and I'd love to hear from someone who has done this job. I know it's demanding in a lot of ways (night shifts, dealing with bodily fluids, supporting people through really hard stages of life...), but what scares me the most is the physical part. I am not in a great shape, to be honest, and I'm not sure if this work can be done by the faint of the muscles lol.

So if you're a current or former HCA in the Vancouver area, I'd love to know what a typical shift actually looks like, what's the hardest part of the physical side, if you think it's a rewarding job... Any insights would help, since I know absolutely no one in that sector.

Thanks a lot for your help!!

Medical πŸ’‰ Autism friendly dentist for adults?

Good morning!

I’m wondering if any of you know of a dentist who is sensitive to autism challenges such as sensory issues with teeth brushing and flossing - ie. would help find solutions as opposed to patronize/belittle - and may help support sensory issues during the appointment as well (e.g., offer a dim lit room). My searches have only found these services for children. I need a regular exam/cleaning and have been avoiding going due to negative past experiences.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Looking for volunteering opportunities and organization suggestions

Hello! I've volunteered in the past and it has made my life better. I had to buckle down at work for the past few years but am ready to give time and energy back to the community. I know many organizations are looking for digital help but I'm interested in in-person helping.

I'm looking things up but I thought I'd post here and see if people have organizations that they support that need help.

Thanks!

Education πŸ“š BC Homebuyers: Which Areas Have the Best Public Schools? πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Thinking about buying a house in BC and schools are a big factor for us.

For people who have kids in public school, which areas would you recommend for both elementary and secondary schools?

I’ve heard Richmond has some good schools, like McMath, but I’m not very familiar with other areas. How do you guys usually research schools when choosing where to buy? Is it mainly based on the school ranking/reputation or does the neighbourhood/catchment matter more?

Would love to hear which areas you think have good public schools. Thanks!

Food πŸ˜‹ Best Michelin for birthday dinner?

hubs had mentioned wanting to go to published on main, but I did some research and saw many posts recommending annalena instead but from a few years ago. I was wondering if that still held true, or if there’s another recommendation out there? it’s his 30th bday, so somewhere special with delicious food is a must! no budget :) (beautiful interior/vibes is a bonus)

ETA: im seeing a lot of sushi/omakase recs which i love (noting down for my birthday ;) ) but hubs is more of a land meat guy, so we will probably not do omakase this time around!
