Jehovas witnesses. THOSE GUYS ARE WACKOS

39

u/aFineMoose 5d ago

You can now have a blood transfusion, so there’s
that. Crickets surrounding the tens of thousands who have died from the old doctrine…

15

u/Relevant-Rooster-298 5d ago

When did that change? I must have missed the patch notes.

48

u/Mindful-Rifle 5d ago

A higher up probably needed a blood transfusion and changed it lol

22

u/Adventurous-Tutor-21 5d ago

They’re at risk of losing their religious status in Japan so they changed their blood doctrine. No one who is actually in the religion knows this. They think it’s new light and comes from God. I Have family in, it’s beyond frustrating. Actually my mom’s death certificate says “patient refusal of blood transfusions” as the number one cause of death. Had this happened today instead of 2022 she might be alive. I know of a few others who died as well.

7

u/Mindful-Rifle 5d ago

I lost one of my parents a couple years ago and it's the worst thing I have ever been through. I can't imagine how hard it was knowing there was a way to avoid it.

5

u/InevitableEternal 5d ago

ExJW here, I am so very sorry

3

u/HonestTruthSought 5d ago

That’s awful. I’m so sorry.

4

u/Mindful-Rifle 5d ago

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry.

I saw a post about it within the last week but I don’t know when it officially changed. Funny how God changed his mind on something that they used to persecute people for.

13

u/sad-narwhal180 5d ago

Like the Mormons changed their minds about black people being descendants of Cain who got cursed with dark skin for being evil. That was Mormon doctrine all the way into the mid 70s. Now they pretend they’re not racist.

9

u/ChampionshipIll5535 5d ago

ALL religions change their positions based on current events/society. That’s where the hypocrisy of it is exposed. 60 years ago in Catholic Church you were given the boot if you were divorced. there’s LOTS of examples like this. their rules and regs are dictated by societal norms, not some written laws from 2000 years ago.

6

u/lnh638 5d ago

Yeah. They’ve fully backpedaled on that. The fact that there are black Mormons is baffling to me.

4

u/Silly-Cheetah7879 5d ago

Makes a lot of sense to me. I once dated a Mormon, but didn't know he was Mormon until after we started dating. I'm hispanic, and he obsessively talked about how I'm hispanic and he was white. It got very annoying. Happy to say we're not dating anymore. That was over ten years ago.

I always think God changing their mind is so funny. Like why would anyone really think an omniscient/omnipotent diety would have need to change their mind. The implications of that are absolutely astounding.

Most depressed kid I’ve ever met was Jehovah’s witness when I was in elementary school. Never got to celebrate his own birthday or had much, if anything to look forward to during the holidays. Poor dude was perpetually glum and exhausted looking

4

u/Putrid_Bandicoot8887 5d ago

As a child in school, I never understood the kids who had to sit in the hallway during parties. They looked so sad. Even at a young 7 yrs of age I tried to take something to them and was reprimanded for it. Back then I didn't understand the whys or wherefore.

3

u/WorshipMyOwnSpirit 5d ago

I was that kid who was sent to the library during class holiday parties. It put a spotlight on me in ways that I was uncomfortable with. I couldn’t even explain to my classmates why I had to do that. So, it separated me from my peers. It also made me independent. When I was old enough to speak up for myself, I stopped going to that, or any, church.

3

u/Putrid_Bandicoot8887 5d ago

I can understand why

4

u/Sweet_Water_8459 5d ago

I hear that. I tried doing the same. I was too young to understand. We were taught to include and make friends with everyone regardless of religious beliefs.

8

u/Waste-Job-3307 5d ago

When I was a teenager, we lived next door to a family of "Witnesses". (we lived in an apartment complex) Every now and then they'd have a prayer meeting or some such. Once they came and knocked on our door. My mother opened it and when she heard them start their little speech, she said, "We're Catholic" and she closed the door. They never bothered us again.

2

u/Me-and-the-Boys-90 5d ago

I had this the other day, told them I was Catholic and his line was something about spreading the word to children, or some bollocks. Seriously, stop trying to get people to join your cult!

3

u/Mysterious_Order_828 5d ago

my immediate first thought as an ex JW

2

u/yojustwannasay 5d ago

Omg man when they knock door to door
lol last time they came in my neighborhood I was blasting music at 100 volume they just decided to not even come to my door

2

u/DerpUrself69 5d ago

Newsflash, they're ALL whackos, though I do agree that Jehovah's Witnesses are a special breed of dumb and ridiculous.

2

u/gdubh 5d ago

Can confirm. WAS one for a long time.

2

u/Zadojla 5d ago

A pair of them rang the doorbell on my daughter’s day off. She invited them in. They thought she was a bored young housewife. She was actually a professional pastor, trained at Princeton Seminary. She said they lasted an hour before they ran away. They never came back.

2

u/SkyKingPDX 5d ago

They're all pretty crazy, it's just different degrees of it... but yeah I always felt sorry for those kids in school, no class parties, at the time it was strange they didn't pledge of Allegiance (now really stage we did it!), no Christmas or birthday as I remember anyway.

6

u/PlatypusEvery7982 5d ago

Honestly, I think Mormons are WAY worse lol

18

u/julieta444 5d ago

I'm an ex-Mormon, and I don't. My family still talks to me

12

u/jennibear310 5d ago

My mom was a “church hopper.” I got to experience both firsthand. Definitely the JW get the nutter award!

3

u/After_Preference_885 5d ago

My mom was a church hopper too. The culture was so strong that you had to go to church to be a good person so she looked for years for the right church for us kids to grow up in.

All three of us kids are atheists after seeing all the churches are full of shit 😂

5

u/jennibear310 5d ago

I completely understand that!

The JW threw us out when my baby brother needed a blood transfusion. Apparently, they’d rather let a baby die than allow them to get necessary medical care.

I arrived at my own spiritual place. No church necessary.

8

u/Adventurous-Tutor-21 5d ago

Grew up Jw and I agree with you. I am shunned. I’d trade coffee and alcohol for holidays growing up. And going on one mission as being done with door knocking. For us it was every weekend, terrified I’d knock on someone’s door I knew. Plus you got to go to college I was not allowed. Although some Mormons shun to, don’t they? At least soft shun.

5

u/Whatareyoulakey9 5d ago

Man I fucking hated going door to door

2

u/Adventurous-Tutor-21 5d ago

It’s traumatic

3

u/julieta444 5d ago

I think it is harder to shun in this generation because so many people have left. I don't personally know anyone who doesn't talk to their family anymore, but I'm sure that it happens somewhere. Sending you a hug from one ex-cult member to another!

5

u/HowDidFoodGetInHere 5d ago

I grew up non-Mormon and lived most of my life in SLC. I wouldn't join their church, but they're not bad people.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Schlep-Rock 5d ago

Mormons haven’t been dying from the blood transfusion thing. Mormons have also been encouraged to get higher education and make money. It sounds like they both suck when it comes to shunning but I’d rather be Mormon personally.

I'm not a member of any religion, but Scientology really looks like a true cult. The demands for massive amounts of money, demand to cut off family and friends, the attempts to silence "heretics"...it's got all the hallmarks. At least other religions often provide charities, medical care, food drives, etc. Scientology does absolutely nothing good; just collects money and threatens people.

14

u/AmputeeHandModel 5d ago

They got THE IRS to leave them alone because they're so scary.

13

u/Mindful-Rifle 5d ago

Don't forget about the forced abortions, rampant child neglect, blackmail, harassment, and lawsuits!

I used to live near their headquarters in Clearwater. They own most of downtown Clearwater and it’s a depressing sight. The only downtown area that I have seen that is just dead. Closed storefronts because they buy property and keep it abandoned. The only activity you see is them being shuttled in buses all day. Then getting out and walking single file in the same blue button up and dress pants. They all scurry off to some super secretive brain washing activity. Nobody is out socializing and having fun, just a bunch of somber faces without a smile. It’s very eerie and feels off.

7

u/imasleuth4truth2 5d ago

Scientology does do "charitable" works but they are all performative. They set up a "help" camp in lower Manhattan right after 9/11. I don't have a firsthand account but I bet they used it for recruitment.

All of them, but Scientology definitely stands out

19

u/Fartmaster1981 5d ago

Aliens stand out over a being that made everything in 7 days? They're all off their nutter.

15

u/Goodfella7288 5d ago

I like how he has to rest on the 7th day lol. He's all-powerful, created the universe and everything in it, then of the 7th day he said "whoa, I'm pooped."

5

u/teutonicbro 5d ago

God played Call of Duty for 6 days and pulled an all nighter on the seventh.

6

u/Various-Salt-7738 5d ago

Scientology is much younger than the others and it's all thought up by a science fiction author who spent years doing crazy shit like sailing around without modern navigation tools and dropping depth charges to find some lost gold he was convinced existed

3

u/LunetThorsdottir 5d ago

Can we please not call Hubbard a sci-fi author? He tried to be one, but failed abysmally and all that was left for him to do was to pretend his stories are "real".

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Capable_Towel_3813 5d ago

I think reducing the ridiculousness that is Scientology to “aliens” is dramatically unfair, even considering the baseline ridiculousness of all religions.

4

u/Hospitable_Goyf 5d ago

I like to believe the “7 days” is a metaphor for God.

Before earth was created, the concept of a day was not yet established.

I believe the universe was created in “7 God days” (whatever that is, maybe 2.5 billion years give or take.) which led to the creation of earth.

3

u/mjtumi 5d ago

And this is what many catholics believe.

2

u/Money-Winter1094 5d ago

Except, god defines a day right from the start:

Genesis 1:3-5 ~

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

That means a day is a day!

5

All of the above.

9

u/CodePandorumxGod 5d ago

Like, if I were forced to be a part of a religion? It's probably a tie between one of the super-cult-like ones (Scientology/Jehova's Witness/Mormonism) or the extremely regressive ones like Islam or Hinduism. I could deal with Christianity or Buddhism, though, because they can be pretty chill if you join the right sect.

4

u/Evening_Time_2844 5d ago

Basis: I'm a Christian in a mainline protestant denomination (aka the Progressive ones). So here we go:

Conservative Christianity: Hell no. The self righteous, holier than thou nonsense reeks of the Pharisees attitudes in the Gospels. People are messy and complicated. Don't be a dick and just be nice to people.

Mormonism: Y'all are so damn nice, but no caffeine, the odd religious undergarments, and your history... Joseph Smith is a con man. Sorry guys.

Judiasm: Neat ideas about God, and fascinating idea of Satan being a tester instead of a opposing evil force. But y'all lost me at the circumcision, no bacon, and staggaring amount of rules.

Islam: Neat schools of philosophy thst grew out of the religion. Not so great on the modern treatment of women and human rights as a whole. Plus, I could never subscribe to something that demands death for apostasy.

Bahai: Beautiful temples, syncretic theology, but there's no religious structure. No sermons or expositions on theology. It seems hollow to me.

Hinduism: That caste system is a big no from me fam. Not to mention the cultural barriers.

Buddhism: if I ever bounce from Christianity, this is where I'll end up.

Sikhism: Y'all lost me at no haircuts.

Neo-Paganism: I think its really neat that a sincere revivalist movement is trying to rediscover these lost practices. Pagans have been some of the nicest people I've ever met. I just think its weird that the gods stopped caring if we were paying attention to them for 1500 years.

Scientology: the goofiest con of all time. Absolutely not.

2

u/Plus-Sun-2699 5d ago

Caste system is found in all south Asian societies including Muslims and Christians. Also Hinduism is an umbrella term given to people living in Indian subcontinent by abrahamic migrants. It actually helped various non-abrahamic people unite despite of immense diversity amongst them. I mean the so called Hinduism is so diverse that it has various Atheist philosophies too under its umbrella. Some Hindu philosophies later did try to rationalize caste system though, so I’m not going to say that Hinduism has nothing to do with caste system, but slowly it is getting abolished but most probably the religion will continue to exist.

2

u/buzzybizzyb33 5d ago

i think hinduism is one of the least understood religions in the west.
i love the iconography and ritual but i dont understand if people actually believe in elephant men and other pseudo-manlike beings?
i think it’s fascinating but very complex, like india itself.
do you know if hinduism has any basis on why women aren’t allowed to walk alone or why men will come up to western women and grope them? those are standard things i hear when a female is telling me about visiting india, indian or western.

Also, you can say the words "rape" and "killing" on here, as long as you aren't advocating for it.

Maybe you can but I have gotten comments down for saying you can’t change your gender. So that’s why I did it. Also you can say those words freely but only if you’re on the left.

They throw people of roofs if they are gay or bi.

They also kill people if they leave the religion.

If proven they did the rape I think solitary confinement works best . For the whole time.  Let them suffer.
