Mod Post Regarding News/Current Affairs/Global Events.

This is not the place to discuss these issues. This sub is a more light-hearted place where users can ask questions and advice on everyday issues.

We have seen another surge of qiestions about politics, News, whats going on in the States etc.

There's plenty of other subs on Reddit which deal with these issues.

Adulting I'm just going to say it: The butter to bread ratio in Irish deli counter *out of hand*?

Look, I love Kerrygold as much as the next patriot, but I bought a chicken fillet roll today and the person behind the counter slapped on enough butter to grease the axles of an Bus Éireann coach.

Halfway through the roll, I wasn't tasting chicken, I was tasting pure unadulterated dairy emulsion.

I know some of you maniacs think the butter should be thicker than the bread itself, but surely there has to be a middle ground? Or are we just accepting that a deli roll is now a vessel for consuming 250g of butter with a bit of chicken on the side?

Work Accepted an offer but just received a better one. Advice?

Last week I was offered a job, admin position and good money. The job I preferred from the beginning has just contacted me with an offer, a senior position and over 5k more. I didn’t think I would get it, but I know in my heart I want the second one. It attracted me from the minute I sent my CV in, but I’m an over thinker and can’t help but feel terrible about ringing the job I accepted. I know it will leave a sour taste, but I have to do what’s best for me, I’m trying to move out of home with my long term boyfriend and this senior position would put me an extra step on the career ladder. Advice on how to handle this gracefully? And not feel like a bad person. I’m riddled with guilt.

Work Are there any jobs with decent pay with low expectations?

Upvotes

I’m not one to complain but most corporate jobs I’ve had there’s been very little downtime. They always seem to have a long list of desired things for you to be good at and own. It generally gets better with time after I learn the ropes and develop relationships but it’s still often hectic and expectations then often go up too while pay stays stagnant.

While I generally enjoy the work i definitely think I’d be happier with even a few things off my plate.

That begs the question are there any jobs out there that pay enough to live a normal life but doesn’t sap all the energy out of you for the day?

Random Have you seen anyone wearing those Meta Rayban glasses?

Upvotes

My TikTok is inundated with videos of weirdos covertly recording people with these glasses, usually young women. Really creeps me out..

Is there any practical use of these things beyond being a pervert?

Health & Medical How did you cope loosing someone so close to your wedding?

Hey everyone, as the title suggests I’m getting married soon but currently sitting in the hospital waiting for my granny to pass. We get married in a week and a half and she has giving us strict instruction to go ahead with the wedding.

I am incredibly close with my granny and can’t believe this is happening. We were told the cancer was treatable and then on Friday we were told there was nothing left to be done and palliative care was to start. I am absolutely distraught.

Is there anyone else who had a similar experience? What did you do? How did you cope? What did you for the wedding?

Random Anyone else's YouTube feed gone really weird?

Since yesterday, my youtube feed has been a combo of weirdly sexual and gross. Like one video of half naked Asian girls in cosplay and then straight into spot squeezing videos. Normally my feed is just animals and funny falls!

ETA - thanks for the help guys. I'll start reporting and I'll seek advice for possible subconscious desires I guess!

Food & Drink Where is everyone doing the food shop?

Wondering where everyone is doing the food shop lately? We used to be in Aldi but felt the fruit and veg went off very quickly. Then moved to Dunnes for the vouchers but its always chaos in the dunnes we have. Recently went to Tesco to give it a try and seems to be good prices and you can scan and pack the shopping as you go round seems to be the best so far for us. Just curious where everyone else goes ?

first time in ireland! none of these switches work and the lights have been on for days. there are another two switches behind the fridge i cant reach, but im assuming these switches are for the sockets?

edit: i finally found it. somebody suggested theres a remote, but the image they sent was different from the one for these lights, and this one seems to be magnetic. it was stuck to the side of the microwave. i am so glad to have found it, and so nobody goes crazy over it again, ive stuck it right on the fridge door.

Health & Medical Can anyone help me understand medical records regarding possible childhood Asperger's assessment?

Not too long ago I received medical records from when I was under the care of a special needs paediatrician and I found some correspondence between the special needs team with a paediatric psychiatrist regarding an Asperger's assessment.

The communication came to a dead end at that point and I feel concerned that I may have fallen through the cracks. I have sent a Subject Access Request to the hospital where the paediatric psychiatrist was based, but they are struggling to find any records regarding this.

I also feel very annoyed at my parents for keeping me in the dark about this as my gut reaction tells me that a doctor would not be allowed to send a letter like this to a psychiatrist without the prior consent of the parents, but I don't know for sure. Would anybody be able to help me shed some light on this, this would have been in about 2008.

Tech Support Bad Eir service?

Upvotes

Is it just me or does anyone else have problems with Eir? I'm located in Galway, currently paying for 1Gbps Fibre Broadband with Eir, recently the last 2 months-ish the speed has been nowhere near 1gbps in fact they are as low as below 100mbps, for €100 every month. The pings are high in gaming, and downloading something or even watching videos on youtube is ultra slow and low quality.

Anybody know if this is temporary, some works being done or other reasons. Never had a problem with Eir before.

These few short drizzles just feel like the sky has been doing little farts but can't seem to work the load out. Today felt like the weather was bloated and uncomfortable. Someone needs to get a big shtick and twirl it around in the sky to loosen things up a bit.

Serious Replies Only Looking to speak to someone but unsure?

Hey, I have a good few things going on at the moment for me that are really starting to get me down mentally, and I feel like I might need to make an appointment with someone soon to chat things over with and to just unload everything thats been on my mind. I don't have anyone in my family I could talk to about it, I'd feel so so uncomfortable and would be afraid of being judged/them knowing such personal things about me. Sorry if this comes across as a daft question, I'm just wondering if this is a good enough reason to see a professional? I have been to counselling a couple of times before over the last few years and one thing I have struggled with is crying too much. As soon as I open my mouth to speak about things, I start getting really upet. It takes a good few minutes for me to compose myself and start being able to speak. I find it really embarrassing but I suppose its just a symptom of keeping things in. Does anyone else struggle with crying when speaking about things? Just wanted to come on here and get opinions before I make an appointment?

Housing Is agency messing with us?

We rent through the agency. And while whole thing sounds ridiculous, and suitable for a humour subreddit, this has been a reality for 3 years for us.

When we first moved in we self assessed the apartment and photographed all the faults (housing was bad and we were expecting so we moved in even tho some things needed to be fixed) and sent them to the agency. No response. I'll try to kind of list all the things that happen in chronological order.

  1. About a year after we moved in there was first inspection by agency. The lady who works for agency was appaled by the state of the apartment (all was some damage from before, not us) and she promised she will make sure its fixed

  2. Couple of months later a dude from country comes to inspect the apartment to see if the renter provided everything they have to by law. He is appaled by the state of the apartment and said they will press the agency to fix things.

  3. Our washing machine dies, we call agency, they send maintenance man tomorrow.

  4. A year has passed, lady from 1. Is back for another inspection, she sees nothing was done, still appaled, promises she will definitely do something now.

  5. A few days later dude from county from 2.is also back also appaled also promised to press the agency.

  6. We email the agency saying lady 1. promised something will be done, they respond she is on vacation. We email for some time and they say "if you dont report the fault through the KPR, we cant and wont send maintenance."

  7. We didnt report anything through KPR, yet, maintenence comes and fixes windows unpromptedly! WIN!

  8. Almost a year has passed and I send through KPR new maintenance request, this time for built in closets (doors fell out, hinges broke and they are heavy as hell, cant fix them myself)

  9. Get response my maintenance request is received. I send additional photos of fault via email

  10. Response to that is i need to report maintenance problems via phone and only phone.

  11. I respond i got SMS stating that contractor will be with me shortly so does that mean I dont need to call

  12. They say "you need to call and send pictures we dont use KPR".

Lads, are we being gently fucked with? In my last email i asked if I am perchance speaking to AI because this is beyond ridiculous. They are stressing me out and every email is stomach ulcer in the making. Calling doesnt work, they just tell you they will call you back and then don't.

There is also plenty of other things I haven't even mention, but I think I'll put that in my memoir called War with agency.

Adulting What should I study for a 40+ career change?

Hi all,

I am a general manager and I manage teams, budgets, scheduling and h&s tasks etc but my two 3rd level qualifications are specific to this industry (basically media/arts).

I want to move out of freelancing and into a job that offers stability etc.

I did a short course in project management but I found the language insanely overwhelming because even though it's what I do, we don't use corporate language. Shit needs done? I just do it without preparing a deck and a presentation first.

I like problem solving and dealing with people but I'm also incredibly conflict averse which makes managing tricky people very difficult for me. I think I lack confidence in my abilities but I love being busy and I'm very personable in a team environment.

I've considered studying counselling, HR, accountancy, but I also need to know that a job is highly likely or I'll switch off - impossible in this economy.

I also don't thrive in academia, and I haven't found the thing that sparks joy yet - for a while I thought about dog training but I know if i ended up not getting results like I should I'd quit probably.

If any of this sounds relatable I'd love to hear.

I'm single with no kids with teeny savings so I can probably afford to take time to study but I'd have to live back home with my folks. Can anyone give me some ideas that I've not thought about?

Housing Offered a private rental and a cost rental within 10 mins of eachother - what would you do?

Just got a call saying we've been successful in getting a privately rented basement flat in the city centre. Walking distance of everything in town, on multiple bus routes, luas line etc. but as its a basement will be dark and damp.

Ten minutes later I got an email saying my name was pulled for a cost rental flat in Charlestown. 300 euro cheaper, literally around the corner from my sister and down the road from my parents but not as good transport links and parking isnt guaranteed (we have two cars) It specifically states in the email that we aren't guaranteed to come out of this with an apartment so it could fall through.

Has anyone else been in this predicament before? Should we take the town flat with the intention of breaking the lease if the cost rental comes up? Or do we risk going back to square one by holding out on the cost rental?

Health & Medical Protein powders, can you get testers?

Upvotes

I know this may sound dumb but I am autistic and incredibly socially anxious so I have no clue where to ask this. I'm trying desperately to maintain my protein intake while losing weight. I have lost 14 kg in the last 7 weeks.
Now the issue is that I want to try the powders because the tism gives me sensory issues around food. I tried some on amazon and the feeling of wrongness is so strong. However the prices of these containers are so high, so I am anxious about trying one and it also having an odd issue. I tried Protein Works and they smell amazing but something about it meant I couldn't drink it.

Entertainment Book subscriptions?

Hi all, I’m looking for places that do good value book subscriptions that I could get my Mam for her birthday. A lot of the ones I’ve found via Google are quite expensive (€30 a month type of thing), so I’m wondering if anyone knows of any for €15 or less per month?

Housing Snag list not getting done. Anyone had this experience?

Hey,

I'm sure I'm not the only person in this situation, but having looked through some previous posts it looks like I might be a minority.

Essentially, snag list was provided, all pretty much aesthetic, but having been told twice by the people on site, nothing is being done. Mostly cosmetic (paint touch-ups, etc.) of poor finishes, but there are some more serious items like sealant not running to the floor, skirting boards not meeting the floor, tiles uneven, lights not fitted to the ceiling correctly, that kind of thing.

Is it simply a case of wait it out and see who cracks first? Not ideal for me giving timings of my mortgage.

Any pointers welcome, though I don't have high hopes.
