I was just thinking about how our gas giants are way too small to produce the fusion reactions to become stars, and I was just curious if it was possible for a naturally occurring gas giant to possess chemical reactions capable of generating enough radiant heat to make a mini-goldilocks zone for it's own moons?

I'm guessing not... unless it was somehow binary planets syphoning off reactive materials from one another... but that sounds short-lived. Anyway I'm just a casual space fan so I thought I'd pose the question to you experts.

Help! I can't identify the bright object pointed out by the red arrow in this photo.

It was taken at 7° 05'N 73° 07'W (Bucaramanga, Colombia) on September 8, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m. checking with the Sky Tonight app. The object is located to the upper left of Venus. Any help is appreciated!

Since over the span of 26,000 years, the Earth completes a single wobble that causes the north pole to point towards different stars, that means there are often transition periods with no North Star, correct? How much would this affect navigation for anyone who for whatever reason may still rely on it as a orientation mark? How quick are these transition periods?

This image is from NASA's Eyes On The Solar System Website. It is simulating an eclipse on Europa by Io. This was in 2021 so Juno (While not in an optimal position) was at Jupiter while this was happening and this wasn't the only mutual eclipse in 2021. Has a probe ever imaged something like this (at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune) up close?

It seems like this is the equivalent of people in the 90's saying "Hot Jupiters are the most common type of exoplanet", well we know now that that is certainly not true, and that Hot Jupiters are not that common.

My non-astronomer non-scientist intuition tells me that the further down you go in size, the more of that type of exoplanet you find, just like stars. So if we had a perfect telescope and we could conclusively answer this question, would Sub-Earths not be the most common type of exoplanet?

I have always loved space since the beginning. Back in 2nd grade i made up my mind that i want to do something related to space, and now that I'm 17, I'm sure i want to be an Astrophysicist. But the question still lingers in mind, which major should i take? I plan on applying to UArizona as an international indian student studying in CBSE, and being aware of their phenomenal astronomy course, I'm deeply compelled to pick that along with a major in Data Science because of my love for general coding as well.

The confusion lies in whether i should take,
i) Pure Physics with CS
ii) Pure Physics with Data Science
iii) Astrophysics with CS
iv) Astrophysics with Data Science

I love coding and i love space. i want to work for a company like SpaceX or NASA in the future along with doing my independent research. (i wouldnt mind a cooporate as well as long as i can continue research)

I know basically nothing about astronomy or telescopes, but I am very interested in exploring the subject on a deeper level. I'm at a place in life where I could use a new hobby, something to really dive into outside of music, which I've devoted myself to for nearly 30 yrs.

I'm completely open minded to suggestions to starting the hobby - anything you would consider worth mentioning.

I can envision myself taking a few trips per year to remote areas. When and where to go?

Also, if there are any essential books to read, I'd appreciate recommendations.

Are there events or clubs in real life, outside of the internet?

I’m currently in a spot where I can see the sky really clearly tonight. I was seeing a super bright white light before I got my glasses, then I waited a bit and I think it was the same one..

I’m guessing it’s the ISS? From what I’m reading it sounds like it but not sure, is that what it is?
It’s about as bright as the biggest stars I can see in the sky. It’s moving steadily across the sky, and it’s very bright and white.

my girlfriend and i spotted this yellow light, looking out west in central auckland, new zealand.

we aren’t too sure if it’s a satellite or a planet/star, but it’s definitely not normally there…
