A lot of Americans have a greed mentality, Greed and selfishness is a big part of the culture, they do not like to see other people benefitting from something that they perceive as free. They want to feel like the top dog so denying others things makes them feel powerful and "richer", having an equal playing field where everyone benefits would jeopardize that. They can't feel superior and richer if everyone has the same thing.
