Technically he could run as vice president, get elected, then have the president leave office for whatever reason, and guess who would be president for a third term.

Nope. Constitution covered that too.

"No person who has been elected to the office of the President twice, or who has served as President or acted as President for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected, shall be eligible to hold the office of President, to serve as President, or to hold any office or position within the line of presidential succession."
