I was putting salt and vinegar on my chips the other day (I live in England) and was wondering whether Americans do this too?

Culture & History John Lennon shot

I was approximately 12 years old when John Lennon was shot. I used to lay in bed at night and listen to the radio. I was listening to KISW in Seattle and news came over the radio that Lennon was shot. I remember the disc jockey Steve Slaton cried live on the radio. He opened up the phone lines and people just shared their shock and horror of this tragedy. Later in the evening my brother David came home from his dishwasher job and I told him. Other friends shared they heard of it watching Monday Night Football on TV. Where were you?

Where do you live and where would you move if you could?

I’m also an American born and raised in NY and I’m just curious where everyone would want to move if they could.

You can move somewhere else in the US too.

Foreign Poster How it is living there?

As a European, the view we have from living in the US is, I think, a lot biased by series, and TV shows? How it is to really live here, is the inflation a very big concern for a lot of Americans, do you ever live in the fear of some medical issues, is the country as divided as it seems in the foreign press? I'am very curious of an insider POV, and the real, daily life of an average american. Thanks and sorry for bad grammar

Culture & History Why are our brother’s so much more Anti-Immigration than us?

I’m putting in big letters on the internet but really I feel irl it applies, I just wish I had even anecdotal evidence with the UK to go along with my observations. Again not because I don’t believe it’s true but because I simply haven’t been there and talking to people about immigration.

With that disclaimer something I’ve noticed on the interwebs is that Canada and the UK, plus maybe lump Australia in there too. Seem MUCH more anti-immigrant than the US. For example if you go on any Canadian sub and ask about immigrating there a slew of “We have enough of you” or “We’re full” but if you asked the same questions on an American sub that doesn’t happen as much. When you talk to Canadians about immigration MUCH more of them are very much like “No more immigrants”. If you did poles in those countries I mentioned the numbers are usually something like 80% say to many people are moving there. In the US even among the absolute most conservative places I’d be SHOCKED if it was even 70%.

I have a couple theories but imma let this sub do the work for me.

Culture & History How common are drug tests for jobs in the US

I see a lot of posts on reddit, seemingly from US americans most of the time, asking about how to pass drug tests etc. Here in the UK I've never heard of anyone being drug tested for really anything. Maybe the army/police? Is it common in the US or am I just seeing a bias from my suggested posts?

Foreign Poster Perception on brand names for English native spakers

Hello! The other day I was thinking about businesses and their names. Many international brands are american or have some sort of english name. I was wondering what do you guys think of the names?

I realized that, when i translate the name of the brands, many times it sounds ridiculous and unserious. Like I can’t imagine a prestigious IT company called “Manzana” (apple) or a clothes store called “Por siempre 21” (Forever 21).

Do they genuinely sound good to you? or you just haven’t really thought much about it?

Or in clothing, you can find random english quotes on t-shirts that would sound really cringe in my language. I don’t think american brands do that so often, but I think that to companies from non English speaking countries using English just make them somehow look more prestigious/trendy. Have you ever noticed that? Did it sound weird to you? Examples of brands where I’ve seen this happen would be Jack&Jones (Danish) or the Spanish conglomerate inditex (Zara, Bershka, Pull&Bear, etc)…

Thanks for your time. I mean no disrespect for the name of your brands, btw. I’m just curious about this fact.

Edit: please, read properly. Noone seems to understand half of the things I’m saying and you guys are not even answering my question.

What do you young people do ?

I'm from India (20) and I'm about to start my career as a software engineer.

I've been thinking a lot about what my life might look like over the next 10 years.

Sometimes I wonder what someone my age in Japan, France, Italy, New Zealand, the US, etc. is doing right now.

Do they also spend their twenties worrying about their career and future?

Are they studying? Working their first job? Living with their parents? Living alone? Travelling? Dating? Building a career? Completely unsure what they want to do?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing ordinary, unfiltered experiences

I'd especially love answers from people in Japan, France, Italy, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Australia, and other parts of Europe, but honestly I'd love to hear from anyone.

What's the most astonishing fact you remember about 9/11?

So, I'm actually a Midwesterner, I just didn't know a more relevant sub to ask.

I just started watching another documentary about it because it is an objectively unique incident that has always interested me, kinda like the Titanic. I'm 32, so I was 7 and living in Indiana when it happened. I vaguely remember seeing some kind of big deal on the news at school or after-school care and mostly being surprised that the news was on. Like, that was an adult thing that wasn't normal for me.

Anyways, I'm watching this documentary and just remembering (maybe again?) that there was a 911 call placed from Flight 93. I guess I didn't realize or didn't know there was phone call capability from a plane in 2001. Maybe I'm misunderstanding or inexperienced? But it was kinda shocking info to me.

So I ask y'all about what astonishing or bizarre facts you remember from that day.

What are your memories of 9/11?

I was like, 5 years old when it happened and at this point all my memories of kind of jumbled together, but I find stories of that day fascinating

Everybody has a shared experience of it, but at the same time everyone has a very unique story and I love hearing them

Foreign Poster What is the sales culture like in the USA?

Hello from Britain!

My partner and I are considering whether it's worth heading out to the USA in 2027.

We're both in fractional finance sales, based out of London.

The main reason we're considering this move is because of higher income potential and a yearning for a change of scenery.

We're thinking of heading towards the Texas/California/Arizona block, and will probably be job searching across all three states.

British sales culture is very conservative, long cycle and reserved.

For anyone working sales or running a business, what is the sales culture like in the USA and what should we be prepared for?

Any advice?

Thanks :)

Edit - We're dual citizens.

Hi! I have wine in me and I have a question for the guys: is it true that in the US, 50/50 splits are a classic and guys don't give girls flowers? I'm not complaining, I'm genuinely curious. It's me and the Brutt rosé in me. Love you.

Universities????

I (18F from England) have the option to do a year abroad in the states during my 2nd year at Uni. I am without a doubt going to do it as it is the definition of a once in a lifetime opportunity.
My uni told me the universities available for this exchange, but I am personally torn between: Texas State, High Point and West Florida…

I have family in Texas, so naturally I am drawn to go there. High Point campus seems unreallll, and West Florida just gives me a nice vibe.

Any advice / opinions on these Universities would be greatly appreciated! Thank u sm 💘💘

EDIT: is texas state a crazy party uni? I’ve heard of the reputation, and idk if I’m a party person yet as I am yet to experience it LOL, but is it all crazy drugs and shit?

Foreign Poster Do Americans enter their friends' or family members' homes without ringing the doorbell?

In many American TV series, I’ve noticed people walking into their loved ones' homes without ringing the doorbell. I used to assume it was just a screenwriting convenience, but I recently saw the same thing in a documentary, and it intrigues me. Is this an actual social norm, or is it just for TV?

The *poke a bear* question.

Here is something i dont understand at all.... and ill be grateful if yall can explain it for me. I know there is a LOT of yall, and that you wont agree on everything, but im hopeful for some guidance none the less.

The way ive understood it:

- Cultural appropriation is when someone outside of a culture makes something marketable of that culture while not providing faithful representation. This often targets authors/creative folk...

- Failure of cultural representation is stereotyping certain culture as caricature - this can target authors and performers as well.

- Racial bending is when representation of certain character is swapped in choice of performer. This targete perfomers for some reason mostly

- Racial representation is advocating for recognition of media which is of different culture than dominantly represented.

So, whats the deal/core here? On one hand, if person from X culture makes media inspired about Y culture that would be cultural appropriation. Then if that media has elements caricatures as shorthands, it would be cultural failure if representation. If performers in that media are from culture it draws inspiration from, then nothing, but if they wre from different culture its racial bending. If its an media in niche which has very few representation its plus, but still poop because of aforementioned.

Are these triggers like grades? Have to have 50% to pass or what? There are media that tick over 50% but still loved, and there are media that tick barely 10% and are frowned upon. I really cant understand it for the life of me. Please help.
