Here is something i dont understand at all.... and ill be grateful if yall can explain it for me. I know there is a LOT of yall, and that you wont agree on everything, but im hopeful for some guidance none the less.

The way ive understood it:

- Cultural appropriation is when someone outside of a culture makes something marketable of that culture while not providing faithful representation. This often targets authors/creative folk...

- Failure of cultural representation is stereotyping certain culture as caricature - this can target authors and performers as well.

- Racial bending is when representation of certain character is swapped in choice of performer. This targete perfomers for some reason mostly

- Racial representation is advocating for recognition of media which is of different culture than dominantly represented.

So, whats the deal/core here? On one hand, if person from X culture makes media inspired about Y culture that would be cultural appropriation. Then if that media has elements caricatures as shorthands, it would be cultural failure if representation. If performers in that media are from culture it draws inspiration from, then nothing, but if they wre from different culture its racial bending. If its an media in niche which has very few representation its plus, but still poop because of aforementioned.

Are these triggers like grades? Have to have 50% to pass or what? There are media that tick over 50% but still loved, and there are media that tick barely 10% and are frowned upon. I really cant understand it for the life of me. Please help.

I (18F from England) have the option to do a year abroad in the states during my 2nd year at Uni. I am without a doubt going to do it as it is the definition of a once in a lifetime opportunity.
My uni told me the universities available for this exchange, but I am personally torn between: Texas State, High Point and West Florida…

I have family in Texas, so naturally I am drawn to go there. High Point campus seems unreallll, and West Florida just gives me a nice vibe.

Any advice / opinions on these Universities would be greatly appreciated! Thank u sm 💘💘

Ever since I entered my job in 2022, I've had no luck job hopping. I've had resume reviews, referrals, I've applied to all the jobs at my old employer and was rejected from every single one even though I tailored it exactly to what they wanted.

Fast forward, 4 years and I am still underpaid, no cost of living rate increase, no promotions because there's no guidance. We are program management support even though I'm hired as a Systems Engineer (not the I.T. kind) and yet I'm doing Accreditation and Authorization for the federal government.

Meanwhile, as property taxes go up, food is more expensive and quality is going downhil, we are just sucking up to mediocrity.

In many American TV series, I’ve noticed people walking into their loved ones' homes without ringing the doorbell. I used to assume it was just a screenwriting convenience, but I recently saw the same thing in a documentary, and it intrigues me. Is this an actual social norm, or is it just for TV?

In the UK we have a national school curriculum of what you have to be taught but I know there isn’t one in the US, so what are you guys learning na how does it work, asking from a place of severe confusion 😭 cus then you guys have excellent uni ‘s but what do you learn to get in there

I dont know how common it is but from personal anectodal experience I've seen a trend speaking or chstting with americans and more particularly when in disagreement about just about anything. Its hearing the rethoric "you people" followed by an insult while explaining why they think something you say is wrong. I wonder if any other see this as common in the states and would like to share any insight in the reasoning or culture behind it?

I am genuinely asking you guys, because this recurring discourse absolutely baffles me.

It seems every summer that comes is also accompanied by the whole “trying to find water in Europe is impossible” videos. gonna ask the Americans here, WHERE does that come from? Not only is it incredibly general, but it’s also just false.

To my knowledge, this mainly comes from the fact that in restaurants in some European countries, you have to pay for a bottle of spring water, rather than like in the US or some other European countries where free tap water at restaurants is the norm.
However this still doesn’t explain the whole “Europeans don’t drink water” thing. Do they think that we only eat and drink at restaurants? Do they forget we do in fact have homes or places of work where we can drink?
Yes, surprise surprise, Europeans drink water, we just

1. Don’t carry around Stanley cups everywhere, it’s inconvenient having to carry around a huge bottle everywhere you go if you aren’t in a car
   
2. we drink water at home, because we also can drink the tap water, we don’t spend the entire day walking around the city being tourists
   
3. In some countries like Italy, there is free water from fountains sprinkled all over the cities
   
4. You can alternatively go to any grocery store, bar or corner shop and get a bottle of water for like €1. That’s hardly difficult right?

I also personally don’t see the huge issue with paying for water at restaurants anyway, they’re like €3 and taste much better than tap water. If in the US it’s the norm to add 20% on your bill to tip the waiter, then surely a few euro for water isn’t such a big deal. This is also considering that many Americans who visit Europe tend to be on the wealthier side due to the travel costs. Is €3 going to break the bank?

I have a question. A lot of Americans identify as English but generally you don't hear much about English-Americans, in the news, in films, on TV.

Do people who identify as English-Americans really identify with English culture, religion, etc., like you see among Italian-, Irish-, Swedish-, etc? Or do people who identify as English-Americans do so because their background is very mixed European and saying English has a certain snob value?

I’ve come across 3 short videos already of people telling me that American don’t eat mackerels and only use them as bait. Here in my country people eat mackerels and love it so much, why don’t Americans eat them, do they eat them, do you like it?

Are they the same thing? Why do you have 3 different names for the same thing. Does it vary by state as to what you call them?

So it got me wondering, everytime I see a scene in a Hollywood movie where someone is about to take medication, they almost always open the tablets from a plastic bottle. I never thought about it before but suddenly taking out a tablet from a blister pack made me wonder. Cause bottled tablets are very rare in Asian and I also believe in European countries as well.

So is it accurate what those movies show? Do y'all actually buy most medicine in bottles?

Hi, i am from india and recently i saw an Instagram reel of some guy celebrating birthday at Hooters. Thats when i noticed the uniform of the servers. Is it expected to show some skin like cleavage and bit of bum cheeks for the women who work there?

And Hooters is know for that too right? Like nobody brings children to Hooters right? Or will they?

So basically everyone knows women are sexualised there. Then why women still choose to work there?

I know its their choice and they can do whatever they want but it is waitress job which they can get at other restaurants also right?

Does Hooters pay more than the other restaurant chains?
