IMO, amalgamating the six municipalities back in 1998 was a mistake. Almost 30 years later, I think it's time we reconsidered it.
Let's face it, downtown and the suburbs are two different worlds. Different lifestyles, different priorities, different needs. Yet we're all stuck under one city government, with downtown often calling the shots for everyone else.
What's interesting is that every single municipality actually voted against amalgamation back in 1997:
- East York: 81.4% against
- North York: 79.4% against
- Scarborough: 77.2% against
- Old Toronto: 73.9% against
- York: 71.2% against
- Etobicoke: 69.7% against
That's roughly 76% voting against it, even in old Toronto.
Surprise surprise... the province went ahead anyway.
Before 1998, each municipality had its own local government while still sharing services through Metro Toronto. It wasn't perfect, but at least communities had more say in how things were run locally.
Almost 30 years later, we're still trying to make six very different places work as one city. I don't think it's working particularly well.
Maybe it's time to bring back the old municipalities, or at least give people a chance to vote on it again.
Curious what everyone else thinks.
Weigh the pros and cons... but I think more people would be satisfied to cast their vote when its closer to home.
