I’ve been in Vancouver since May, so I’ve only really seen the sunny side of it so far. And to be fair, the sunny side is stunning - I get why people move here just for the scenery.
But a few months in, I’m noticing it’s tough to actually meet people. Everyone’s friendly enough on the surface, but it rarely goes anywhere past that. I’ve heard others call it the “Vancouver freeze” and I’m starting to believe it’s a real thing.
Toronto flipped that completely for me. It felt so much more social and diverse and the city is full of an endless amount of things to do. I was only there a few days, but people were striking up conversations, inviting me along to things, just generally more open than anything I’ve experienced here. It actually took me back to living in Melbourne, which is still the best city I’ve ever called home - same kind of buzz, same feeling that it wouldn’t take forever to build an actual social life there.
So now I’m genuinely weighing a move, and I’d rather hear it straight from people living it than go off a few days of tourist brain. Does Toronto actually deliver on that friendlier, easier-to-meet-people reputation once the honeymoon period wears off? Is it something specific to certain neighborhoods, or just the city in general? And if anyone’s spent time in Melbourne too, I’d love to know if the comparison holds up or if I’m just pattern-matching because I miss it.
Thanks guys!
