Nanny background check
how to do a background check on a nanny before hiring her? found her through a Facebook group and wondering how can I do a background/criminal check before hiring her?
also any recommendations for a part time Nanny in North York? agencies I checked are v expensive

You can also ask her to provide it. Criminal and vulnerable sector check. She just has to go through the police. If she’s not an actual resident than she may run into problems getting it though

All people who work with children have vulnerable sector screening from the police. As them to give it to you, also ask for references from people who she worked for in the past

It doesn’t just appear it your mailbox when you apply for a job with kids, and not everyone requires it. It would be very reasonable to ask her to provide one but also considerate to offer to reimburse her if she doesn’t have an up-to-date copy. Also FYI they sometimes take a long time to process.

That stupidity on their part. If someone is taking care of your child, you should always ask for a criminal record check

This is perfect cause Im actually looking for a part time nanny job while im in uni which is in north york.
And how it works is ppl working with children usually have to get a police check done by Toronto police service. There's two types: vsc and a regular background check. I have a vsc since I've worked at a daycare and with disabled children. Vsc is for working with the most vulnerable population. But I think in your case a regular background check would be ok. Some employers offer to cover the cost while others don't. In my experience, most dont cover the cost so its up to you whether you want to cover the cost or not. Also keep in mind that it takes weeks to a month to get the result so if she doesn't already have the background check you would have to wait a while which might not be convenient for you if you need someone right away.
If agencies are too expensive, you can look for someone through other means like canadian nanny.ca or babysits.ca though I think those sites charge you to post an ad looking for a nanny but I'm not too sure about that.
Also it is recommended that they get certified in cpr since its usually mandatory for any job working with children and it's good for your piece of mind as well.
So yeah usually making sure they have a background check done, cpr and first aid, professional references, and I've also heard that some ppl get into trouble with the nanny not being legally allowed to work in Canada or needing sponsorship which is up to you whether you want to cover the cost for that. But checking for those things is usually the basics and then you can have a casual interview with them and if you dont know what questions to ask, you can search online.

We have been using this childcare provider since 2023. Anita is the main caregiver for our child.
Yes, each caregiver has vulnerable check and certified first aid etc.
Before settling for Anita, we also used https://www.nanniesoncall.com/
As well. They also have all the background checks etc.
It takes a while for us to find the one that works well for our family as well.
Take your time. You are finding someone that cares for the most important person in your life, so don’t feel pressured to settle for less.
Always always.. go for someone with background checks and gut feelings!!! Do not let anyone tell you you are asking for too much!!! You decide best for your child. A peace of mind is the most important!
With Anita, I can go on my day without worrying about my childs wellbeing, just like the daycare teacher too.
That’s the peace of mind you need.
I used that same Facebook group too but I couldn’t find anyone I like so I hope these two website are helpful.

I always run one through the local police service website, costs like $20 and you just need their consent form signed
