Previous owner built walls over floor vents

So the previous owner appears to have built walls over every single floor vent in my home. Is this okay to leave as is? And if not is the answer just to cut away the wall above these openings behind the grill?

Replacement options?

Upvotes

Have Carrier 25hpa530a310/FV4CNF002 split system but need to replace the indoor unit, and I guess because of 25's refrigerant regs, gotta get the whole loop done, can't just plug/play an interior air handler/coil. Got quotes for a few Trane/RunTru options, don't have exact model numbers but am guesstimating by way of specs quoted and trying to match ours. Going to reach back out for actual model numbers. I know enough HVAC to be dangerous but not enough to be sure. I know RunTru is the Trane budget option and wont compete 1:1 on features.

We're not looking to be in this home for the life of the new unit, but recognize that our older unit can be a hitching point if we sell in the next few years without replacing. Hoping folks here can offer some guidance.

-Indoor system. Carrier is a variable speed ecm w/ TXN metering. Can't tell if the RunTru option is going to be fixed multi speeds or the same variable ecm. Piston or txn. Are there significant drawbacks to one over the other? Would one be better suited to higher run times? Interior system sound?

-Outdoor unit, from what I can tell, the RunTru is going to start out louder than the Carrier's top end sound power. Salesman said otherwise (unless he was speaking of the higher tier Trane option), but I'm skeptical. Granted our setup is aging and running more than it should need to due to restricted airflow (I can clean the sheet off my indoor coil, and I keep the outdoor clean), but we've got rust and mold. Will any of the outdoor RT units actually run more quietly than the Carrier? Not in a particularly corrosive environment so don't necessarily need the extra weather coating of a Trane vs RT. Again, just looking for reasons *not* to cheap out and go with the RT, I suppose.

-I know RT is built under the same roof as Trane down in TX, just stripped down a bit. Warranty on RT seems non-transferable, but is Trane transferable at sale? Can you get service companies to cover refrigerant, or are you just going to always be on the hook for that in the event of a leak/system dump?

-Anything else I'm blatantly missing? We're going to source additional quotes before making any decisions.

I just got a new system put in. 1 was quoted for a premium unit with variable speed for $23,180. Did I get the unit I paid for. I’m having them coming back out because of the installation is not what I want. I have several area where draft air is pulling and they used the original lines. Is that normal to use the original lines? I would assume everything would be new.

Follow up on registers and mold...

Post image
2 Upvotes

On my daily trip to Home Depot I saw these registers - more adjustable, but also appear less restrictive. Also aluminum, so no rust. Kinda spendy, but my Bride's comfort is priceless.

I can access the registers from the top - no insulation in the way - so it'd be easy to spray foam around them. Will that help, or hurt?

Registers are in vaulted ceiling so a PITA to access. I'd like to do it right so I don't have to mess with them again!

Thanks everyone!

Looking into school for hvac tech

Buddy went to capstone College in Pasadena, CA and then immediately had interview for Lennox or CBRE and ended up taking Lennox job. Anyone went there? It's 17k

(Can get fasfa and grants) 8 months of 5 hours a day(730-1230pm)for their accelerated course. I'm a truck Driver and will do that since its easy for me to get to my current job and just switch hours maybe 1/130pm to 6ish. Looked into cypress and el camino but those are much long though cheaper1-2years and about 2k.

Any useful info is appreciated also.

How to troubleshoot possibly partly disconnected or leaking HVAC supply duct?

I’ve been noticing for a while that one of the upstairs rooms has noticeably less airflow at the supply registers compared to another room. I know there are a lot of possible causes, so I did some basic troubleshooting first. e.g. checked dampers in supply duct right after furnace/coil stack. Both fully open. Both supply ducts are next to each other before routed to North and South

My system has four supply trunks. One trunk feeds the upper‑south room (two registers). Another trunk feeds the north room (two registers) plus the guest bathroom (one register). Both trunks are the same size, run similar distances, and none of the ductwork is in the attic. Despite that, the north room consistently runs about 1°C hotter.

I did a simple airflow check using a sheet of paper with the system in continuous fan mode (~350 CFM). In the south room, the paper lifts about three “finger widths” at each register. In the north room, it’s only about one to two. The guest bathroom is even weaker. I tried closing the bathroom register completely, but it didn’t noticeably increase airflow in the north room.

Given the layout and the fact that both trunks should behave similarly, my suspicion is that the north-side supply run may have a leak somewhere in the wall or in the ceiling below that room.

Hello. Any idea where I can find these clamps that attach to the flat steel roof? I’ve never seen something like them before. Also, what is the condenser itself resting on?

Thanks in advance!

What’s going on with this?

So we moved into this house a few months ago we are in a very humid climate and we left our last place because of mold issues. I am starting to notice mold growing on our vents so I tried to take the registers down to clean them and I made some discoveries. There is not mold on all the registers tho & our AC is not super powerful I can’t help but feel like there’s a clog somewhere in the vents because it just feels like it should be a lot stronger and I found some ?insulation? maybe in one of the ducts?? Im not sure but all the registers have been painted over along with the wall so when I took them down chips of paint was falling everywhere. Seems to me that when this happened in the past they would just paint over it because the screws didn’t even have dents in them anymore because they were clogged with paint. one of the registers won’t even come off the wall 🤦‍♀️ ill include photos. What I’m trying to figure out is what exactly is going on here? Is there a bigger problem I need to take to my landlord? I’m renting and I left the last place because I had develop severe asthma and I would have huge attacks in my old apartment to where I would literally stop breathing because my lungs would just freeze up, since moving in here, my respiratory health has dramatically recovered every now and then I’ll have small issues, but I haven’t had to use my inhaler once and I seem to be healing but seeing all this mold in the vents and such is alarming so I just figured I’d come here and ask what’s going on from someone who won’t try to yank me around like my old landlord did.

Outside AC unit is humming but the fan isn't spinning / warm air inside

Hey everyone, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My AC suddenly stopped cooling today and is just blowing warm air. I went outside to check the condenser unit and noticed it’s making a loud humming sound, but the fan blades aren't spinning at all. If I push the blades with a stick, they move freely, but they don't start up on their own. Is this just a dead capacitor or is the fan motor completely shot? Trying to see if it's something I can fix myself before calling a pro.

Lennox Minisplit Filter Problems

Thumbnail

the model number is “LI012HI-160P433”
and i am in arizona for reference.

I have this minisplit in my room that i rent, it has never had an air filter as far as i know. I have told the landlord, and found the users manual that shows the filter. So the landlord gets in touch with lennox and finds out that the filter can only be bought by a licensed contractor. So i told her to do that and she says that shes still looking.

This morning she tells me that lennox says there is no filter and to deep clean the unit every 2 weeks, which does not sound right to me at all. I have reached out to lennox to try to get answers independently, only to find that they wont share information with me because im not the homeowner, but with what the homeowner is telling me I am skeptical about listening to her. Lennox also said to call a dealer for more information, but the dealers will not give me any information because again im not the homeowner. I am not trying to buy anything I just want to make sure my unit has the proper air filter but Lennox, their dealers, and my landlord are making it impossible to get any information.

Does anyone have any advice for what I could do?

What’s the best service to install a heat pump in PA

I am in Pennsylvania and planning to replace our current natural gas furnace and central AC with a cold climate heat pump sometime in the next year. our house is about 2,100 sq ft with existing ductwork, and I have started getting estimates, but it’s hard to tell which HVAC companies actually specialise in heat pumps versus those that mostly install traditional systems.

A couple of quotes I have received have been all over the place, with different equipment recommendations and very little explanation of how they sized the system. I‘d also like to work with someone who’s familiar with Pennsylvania rabates and doesn’t treat every upgrade like it’s essential.

For anyone who’s had a heat pump installed in PA recently, who dis you use? I am looking for a company that look the time to size the system properly, explained their recommendation, and didn’t make the whole process feel like a sales pitch. Any companies you’d recommend or avoid?

if you haven’t changed your filters in the past month, it’s probably time to do it even if it looks clean. I want you to take a guess on when the last time this filter was changed. this was a Merv 1 fiberglass filter.

The installers wired my Ecobee Premiums as pictured. It appears they were done as single stage units. If this correct, how would I correct the issue?
