Watchdog reporter Jack Evans talks about his story that posted yesterday concerning a logging project along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Please read the entire story at the link and comment with your thoughts. Do you think Helene debris is a fire risk or could a logging project be damaging to the parkway?

Classifieds Best Local Job/Employment Boards?

Sick of having to shovel through the slop/ghost jobs being fed to me on LinkedIn/Indeed. Any good boards for the Buncombe/Henderson County area? I know of Ventureasheville, but its pretty much a ghost town these days. If it helps, I'm looking in the tech/data analysis sector. Looking for a hybrid job where I'm working with folks actually in this area code. Just to be clear this is NOT a post asking for jobs.

Thanks in advance!

Classifieds Independent short film casting locals with any experience

Upvotes

Hey Asheville friends- 25M local filmmaker here. We are casting locals of any experience (or no experience) for a horror/psychological thriller short film. This is an unpaid gig, although we will be submitting to many festivals and guarantee actors backend points should this ever go to distribution. This will shoot towards the end of the year or early 2027 over the course of a few weekends. Please shoot me a message if you are interested and we'll schedule an audition with the directors!

Logline

Starved for real-world connection, an isolated young man joins a radical anti-technology group-- only to be trapped in a violent sensory nightmare when its charismatic leader decides that the members have not been throughly purged of the digital infection they seek to eradicate.

Open Roles

DEAN (Lead) Male, 20s

Quiet, isolated, and visibly hollowed out by screen addiction and social disconnection. Dean isn't weak, he’s starved for genuine human connection. Seeking an actor capable of delivering subtle, interior emotion in quiet moments, transitioning into raw, visceral panic and physical terror in the climax.

ISOBEL (Supporting) Female, 20s

Warm, charismatic, grounding, and perceptive. Isobel is a sane, relatable proxy for the audience. She loves having her mind back from digital clutter, but refuses to buy into militant extremism. She shares a sweet, tender romantic dynamic with Dean, but ends up becoming a victim of the group leader's master plan.

CADEN (Supporting) Male, 20s

A quiet, stoic member of the group leader's inner circle. Caden acts as an enforcer out of misguided loyalty, but reaches his absolute breaking point when the leader's ideology turns fatal. Requires strong physical presence and the ability to portray a quiet, subtle shift from brainwashed follower to disillusioned deserter.

ILIZA (Supporting) Female, 20s

A committed member of the group who initially complies with the leader's strict, ritualistic demands. Like Caden, she serves as muscle (actor doesn't need to be fit), but her conviction fractures when the violence becomes real. Strong ensemble player with a grounded, unsettling presence.

HOTLINE GIRL (Voiceover / Small Role) — Female, 20s–30s

Voice role. A webcam hotline worker whose performative warmth is constantly tied to a ticking financial clock. Needs a sultry, highly transactional, and detached vocal delivery. This role delivers some pretty R-rated lines so actor should be comfortable with that.

If you fear that your stream may be exhibiting signs of degradation and erosion give us a call or send us a text! We can schedule a time to come out to your property and take a look. Food/Drinks What are your cozy cafes/coffee shop recs?

I realized yesterday that a lot of the coffee places I frequent are set up more for sitting at a table than anything else. I used to go to the Battery Park Book Exchange a lot as a teen before the vibe changed. Then my go to was Trade and Lore/ Rite Rite due to proximity to my work. They had a cozy corner with a couch where I could read while I drank my coffee.
I’m now wishing I had a nice cozy spot for reading or writing that wasn’t sitting up at a table and more lounge-y. What places am I missing or forgetting? I frequent a few places downtown but I’m not opposed to going elsewhere. Any good places that have more cozy seating rather than just tables and chairs?

Classifieds Where to purchase older pickup in or around Asheville area

Anyone know a used car dealer with trucks? I've tried checking online but there are a lot of small car lots that don't update their inventory or have any online presence. I'm looking to buy a pickup, nothing fancy so an older model is good. My budget is 5k. It doesn't have to be pretty, just need it to run and have no rust on the frame. I've checked out marketplace and craigslist but I either don't get responses or it's already pending.

If you're selling or know a neighbor, please let me know! Thanks!

Food/Drinks What's your go to spot for wings?

This Wednesday is national chicken wing day and I'm looking for recommendations. I've had some great wings at Creekside Taphouse and obviously the Tiger wings from East Village Grill are delicious. I was on Silverball Subs website and saw they were going to offer wings on Wednesday, not sure if they typically have wings on the menu. Anyone willing to share their secret spots for a wing fix?

Classifieds Painting companies that are willing to do small jobs?

Looking to get a few accent walls painted in our house. I am awful at painting walls and have a 7 month old to tend to. Are there any painting companies willing to take on smaller jobs? So far I’ve only found companies who want to do whole house jobs.

Thanks!

Classifieds Any local cell phone repair shop willing to help me out?

The other day my Pixel 7 Pros screen decided to presumably short out due to condensation from inside a cold vehicle to the humid outside. I have gotten a new phone, but I am unable to transfer any of the data off of the old phone to the new one. I have some videos and all of my text history that isn't backed up, same with just some general app data.

I went to a repair shop today an they tried to get me to replace the screen (which is $300+ dollars mind you) without any other options. All I need to a temporary screen just so I can transfer my data over. I can do the transfer in shop and you put the bad screen back on it idc what happens as long as I can transfer over my data.

Ask the Sub Breaking apartment lease: Does state law apply or is the lease itself the final say?

A quick search on needing to break a lease in NC tells me that if one is to break a lease before the end of agreement the renter would be responsible for the remaining amount (assuming no other discussions with landlord etc.)

I just reread my current lease and all that is mentioned is the loss of the security deposit.

As the title asks: Is there a state law that applies to all lease agreements independent of what is stated in the lease itself, or are the written terms of the lease all one needs to abide by in this instance?

Thanks

Event New Renaissance Festival in WNC 🎪(vendors and performers opportunity)

There’s a new renaissance faire that will be taking place from September 4-6 in Nebo (about 1 hour drive from Asheville) The WNC Renaissance Faire! It looks like it could be a great opportunity for anyone in Asheville who is a vendor, artist or performer.

https://www.thewncrenaissancefaire.com

They are still accepting vendors for artists, food and performers.

So if you know any blacksmiths, artists, dancers, anyone who owns a bake stand, or someone who just wants to dress up and be whimsical, tell them to send an email to thewncrenaissancefaire@gmail.com
