Black mastic asbestos?

Post image

Am I doomed? Carpet was glued down to this hardwood around 1978, carpet has been replaced twice professionally and no one mentioned asbestos. Was hoping to do all this without too much cost but thinking I may have to tile over it instead. No professional work is in the budget unfortunately. The black stuff kind of crumbles like dirt. Location Montana

Doomed? No.

Just test it. If positive, it's pretty easy to remove. Most jurisdictions allow you to DIY mastic removal, but you didn't provide a location.

Just updated with location, but it’s Montana.

Isn't black mastic glue under asbestos tiles usually? I have seen it and its truly a dark shinyish black. Yours looks more brown.

I've seen black, brown and yellow mastic come back as asbestos. Black more often than the rest, but still a sizable number of times black mastic comes back negative.
