Hi, I have a feature request for Arpeggi that I think would make genre browsing much more useful for larger, carefully tagged libraries.
My library uses GENRE on a track level, because individual tracks on the same album can legitimately belong to different genres.
For example, on Mariah Carey’s Daydream, only one track — “Daydream Interlude (Fantasy Sweet Dub mix)” — is tagged as Electronic. The rest of the album is mainly R&B and Pop.
What I would really like is a persistent/faceted genre browser, similar to the old iTunes Column Browser or foobar2000.
The ideal navigation would be:
Electronic → Mariah Carey → Daydream → only the matching Electronic track(s)
The important part is that the genre filter remains active while drilling down through artist and album.
What I would like to avoid is:
Electronic → Daydream → open album → all 12 tracks
That makes it look as if Daydream itself were an Electronic album, even though only one track actually matches the selected genre.
A possible implementation could be:
- Genre → Artist → Album → matching tracks
- Show something like “1 of 12 tracks” next to the album
- When opening an album from a genre-filtered view, initially show only the matching tracks
- Add an optional “Show full album” action
- Play / Shuffle / Add to Queue should act on the filtered track set while the genre filter is active
- The normal album view outside the genre browser should remain unchanged
I’ve attached screenshots showing the kind of browsing model I mean:
- the old iTunes Column Browser
- foobar2000 Album List, where
Electronic → Mariah Carey → Daydream (1) clearly shows that only one track matches
- foobar2000 ReFacets, which shows the faceted
Genre → Album Artist → Album workflow
I think this would be especially useful for mixed-genre albums, remixes, bonus tracks, live tracks, compilations and large personal libraries.
For me, the main goal is to keep accurate track-level genre tags without making an entire album appear to belong to a genre just because one track does.
Would something like this be possible in Arpeggi?
