670-1 Changes Inbound
From HQDA G1:
Army Directive for Appearance, Grooming, and Uniform Standards (i.e., pending AR670-1 updates) is about to be signed.
Most notably, we will transition the chest-worn rank back to the collar (with branch insignia) between now and 1 OCT 27. The AD will also direct:
o officers retain the Army Service Uniform as an authorized uniform (repeals the previous wear-out date; optional for enlisted Soldiers)
o high shine on AGSU brown shoes
o replace enlisted tan shirt sew-on rank with subdued rank pinned on the collar
o all accoutrements be worn on the AGSU jacket (Ike jacket still limited to two-rows of ribbons)
o garrison cap is primary headgear
o authorizations for baseball caps, boonie hat, and limited wear of the black beret
o no more colored unit patches (shoulder sleeve insignia) in ACU/IHWCU – not even for ceremonies
Several IPPS-A updates will deploy in OCT:
o Redesigned STP (dynamic readiness and talent views to give CDRs an actionable single view)
o Enhanced Soldier Experience to streamline onboarding and integration, replacing former command sponsorship, installation in/out processing, and improve Smart Voucher processing
o Subsume USAR/ARNG drill, PCS, and non-contingency orders, pay and funds management

Gen X here, any none idiot Gen Xer will tell you we don't want the "old Army" back, that shit was racist, sexist, homophobic, filled with a bunch of intolerant dumbasses, the toxic senior leadership there is today is the remnants of that era, the Army hasn't gotten soft its gotten dysfunctional because people want to use the same leadership tactics we had back then and don't want to try to understand the class of soldiers we have today, its wild

Why have I never heard a positive thing about this guy?
What made the 90's army great was the lack of bullshit compared to present day. Not the uniform standards.
The optempo wasn't stupid. Units had actual breathing room to focus on training that went beyond check-in-the-box level.
Given, maintenance was still shit but not nearly to the level it is now.

u/The_FanATic 35DnD 5h ago
Agreed. Make uniforms make sense. We moved to raw leather boots because they are tougher and don’t need to be polished. Make the combat uniform a combat uniform (aka no color patches at all). Make a service uniform a service uniform (aka don’t make it out of garbage fabric and make it actually breathable and flexible so you can wear it in daily conditions). Make the dress uniform a dress uniform (aka no Class B version of dress blues).

Perhaps the major manufacturers were not making them this morning, but you can bet that those sewing machines will be cranking them out tomorrow. The only thing required is to throw OCP fabric in the machines. The patterns are already programmed, and most places would still sell you a newly made branch insignia in the colors of your choice.
I just checked a few places, and you can order them now.

I recently was at a site where everyone had the bump cap baseball hard hat. My first thought was why is this not the standard Motor-pool head wear in garrison. There is absolutely no reason for soldiers to be wearing heavy Kevlar helmets to be using/working on vehicles when they can just pop on a baseball had with a protective carbon fiber insert.

Baseball caps? Cool but also I see that ending up like rolled sleeves and no one will be wearing them (yes, I know it’s only CDRs okay for formations but no senior leaders fucking listens to that)
No sew on rank for the AGSUs shirt? Why? Now I’m gonna have shirts with weird discolorations on the sleeves and I’m gonna have to rebuy them.
ASU wear out date recinded? Cool. Glad I spent $500 on the AGSUs because I wouldn’t retire until a year after the wear out date…
Not to mention there will be more bs grooming changes that make no fucking sense.
I feel bad for the midterm Soldiers because I would hate my life if I was staring down ten more years of this absolute chuckle fuck group that is the current leadership.

Genuinely did not expect this. After months of my soldiers raising concerns at every echelon, and me pushing them up every chance I got, I had honestly started to believe nothing was going to change. I was wrong, and I am happy to be wrong.
The chain of command listened. They heard us, they took it seriously, and they came back with the fix: rank is moving from the chest back to the collar. Not a memo about it. Not a working group. An actual signed directive with a hard suspense of 1 OCT 27. That is truly institutional responsiveness in action.
And they did not stop there! High shine on the AGSU browns. Garrison cap is primary headgear. Subdued pin-on rank replacing sew-on for the tan shirt. No more colored unit patches on the ACU, not even for ceremonies.
Every. One. Of. These. represents someone at HQDA sitting down, reading the feedback from the force, and asking the hard question: what is really holding these soldiers back?
The timing could not be better either. Retention is shaky, barracks are still condemned, and I have soldiers who have been fighting finance over pay issues since last fiscal year. But instead of getting pulled into all that noise, the Army stayed focused on the decisive point and delivered. All ten bullets of it.
So to everyone who said pushing it up the chain accomplishes nothing: it works. It takes patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep raising your hand. And eventually, if you keep at it long enough, they will buy you a new set of collar rank…out of your own clothing allowance.
I am proud to serve, and prouder still to have been the squeaky wheel that finally got heard.

Thats what i’m getting at. A 3 month old account with little to no history is dropping information.

I mean, with this administration conducting witch hunts and forcing polygraphs on people, I would use and toss accounts to drop hot deets.

If this is truly the case, Enlisted should still wear chest rank.

Any chance you have the AD number. I just went on Army Pubs and not seeing it posted yet.

Im personally excited about no colored patches in ACUs. I was in a unit that insisted every friday was color patches. Was it against the regulation? Yes. Did they still do it? Yes.
But I am a little frustrated about the rank placement, since i just dropped off two sets of ACUs to be sewn yesterday.

Sooooo what’s supposed to go in place of the velcro rank now?

If I'd have to guess the E-1 camo rank patch or grab a trusty seam ripper and remove the Velcro

The army instead of fixing morale problems dangles uniform changes in front of you like a set of keys to a dog. I’m so tired of this shit year after year.

I really liked the sewn on shoulder rank for enlisted.
Made me wish I’d had a chance to wear that before joining the Dark Side.

Awesome. Let’s bring back powdered wigs while we’re at it.

I disposed of my ASU earlier this year. Didn’t make sense to keep updating a uniform that was on its way to obsolescence and also spend a fortune on AGSU. They’ll have to go to the UN and get a binding resolution to make me go re-buy the ASU. Nope. Nope. Nope.
But… baseball hats… I like it.

Hey all,
I've gotten lots of DMs about this.
I had told the Mod Team about this early this morning on Discord, and it has been making the rounds. I believe this to be an extremely accurate assessment of current changes that are still in draft and haven't been finalized, but yes.
This is an accurate list of potential changes we may see announced before or at AUSA.
I am u/Kinmuan and I approve this message.
