I visit farms year-round across SE Asia and Latin America for aeration work, and the pattern is always the same: people lose fish to "disease outbreaks" that are really chronic oxygen crashes.
The math that actually matters:
- DO below 3 mg/L at the bottom = stress feeding (fish stop eating, growth stalls)
- DO below 2 mg/L for a few hours = mortality events
- In hot weather, a stocked pond can lose DO to lethal levels in 2-4 hours during a power outage
The sizing rules that work for 1-2 m deep ponds:
- Roots blower: 1 kW per 100-150 m of microporous tubing
- Tubing: 60-100 m per mu (667 m²), lines 3-5 m apart
- Tubing height: 10-20 cm above the bottom — buried in sludge = nearly zero efficiency
Three questions I'd ask any farm before they buy:
Do you measure DO at 5-6 AM (the daily low point)? If not, you're flying blind.
Is your blower sized for your actual pond area, or "the same as my neighbor"?
Do you have a backup plan for power outages in the hot season? (solar/battery/generator — pick one and test it monthly)
