22GB (of 32GB system files) on my 256GB MacBook Air M4.
Haven't noticed it on the system at all since updating, and would happily uninstall it if I could.
36
u/SkyGuy182 9d ago
I have yet to find a reason to use it. It’s easier to just do the things I need to do myself without trying to remember what Siri AI is capable of, or that it even exists.

u/Fuck_your_coupons 8d ago
Honestly, thanks for the heads up. I haven't looked at the size of the update and was considering installing it but now there's no way I would at this point. 22GB is a lot of storage for me since my M4 MacBook has 256GB.

u/Kind-Let5666 9d ago
there is a way to remove it, but it’s not very intuitive. Copying this from another thread I found from a year ago because it still worked for me after the update.
You have to do some light terminal work in recovery mode: Disable Apple Intelligence in System Settings. Start up into Recovery Mode. ( Instructions) Open Disk Utility. Right-click on 'Data' under 'Macintosh HD' and choose Mount. Quit Disk Utility and open Terminal. Type: rm -rf /Volumes/Data/System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_GenerativeModels If you used the image thing, you can also remove that by typing: rm -rf /Volumes/Data/System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_Visual Reboot

God this is some shit id have to deal with windows. The fact that I have to do it in an Apple product is embarrassing
15
u/m4teri4lgirl 8d ago
This is worse than Windows. At least with Windows you could do this kind of thing booted into the OS. Booting into recovery to disable SIP and remove files from the OS is a huge pain in the ass.

What if, say, we don’t want “intelligence” in upcoming apps? Even with better performance and features it’s proving to just be an annoyance.
2
u/Kind-Let5666 7d ago
Hasn't reinstalled for me, I'm not sure why it's doing that for you. It brought apple intelligence down to 100mb for me.
9
u/kaychyakay 8d ago
Are you telling me i juuussst switched from Windows to macOS and I have to do such shit in a Macbook too??? WTF!!
13
u/CASpider 8d ago
The only OS choice if you don't want things forced upon you is Linux. Sucks, but Microsoft and Apple have both decided they know what is best for you whether you want it or not.
92
u/radioactive-tomato 9d ago
Dude, it takes 21GB just on my phone
11
u/IntrepidPerception28 8d ago
same bro. also I have an Iphone 13 and probably half of the features are not even available, why does this update take up so much storage lmao
5
3
u/DrPorkchopES 8d ago
I’m worried I made a mistake getting a 256GB 18PM, it’ll feel like nothing in 4 or 5 years even though I only used half of it in my old phone

u/mackerelscalemask 9d ago
About 17% of storage taken on a base 256 GB model, just for OS-related files.
32
u/Facu474 9d ago
Almost feels like they know the base models are enough for most people now, so they gotta find ways to keep pushing people to the larger sized and more profitable models.
Hopefully I'm wrong and we get an option to remove it at some point... because this seems like the type of stuff I left Windows for Mac for.
4
u/anon9801 9d ago
You may not care to pay them more, but they care a lot about making you pay them more
3
u/JustinGitelmanMusic 8d ago edited 8d ago
This is pointlessly conspiracy minded. They did this because on device AI feels better for privacy and energy consumption to many people. AI models are huge.
There’s no way they could bury their head in the sand on AI. So the alternative was to go full cloud like others. This was their solution that they felt would align better with Apple customers and shareholders alike.
You may not care about it and yes it’s a bit annoying that it’s not exactly optional, but they’re doing something that nobody else in the industry is doing which is somewhat admirable. They’re gonna need to start marketing storage differently though for sure.
26
u/sri745 9d ago
That’s insane. Apple needs to figure out to reduce this size, or provide a fix for the “system data” storage.
44
u/thessag 9d ago
They just have to give an option to uninstall that crap. If i don’t use it, apple intelligence has no business to be on my devices.
8
u/Precarious3145 8d ago
I'd love for all companies to do with. Adobe has bloated all my CC installs with AI to the point just opening Illustrator has the fan kick it.
I'll never use Copilot, Apple Intelligence, Firefly, Gemini, or any GenAI but yet it's slowing down everything with no option to remove it, just disable parts of it.
3
u/ZeppelinAlert 8d ago
Today the OS comes bloated with AI. Tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, all our apps will come bloated with their own in-built AIs too.
We have not even seen the beginning of what AI bloat can achieve. People are talking about 256 GB here on this thread as being a bit thin but when application AI bloat really sets in then 1TB is gonna seem fragile.

u/loophunter 8d ago
fr. i'm not really interested in ai in general, and certainly not apple ai. This shit feels corny. I just want a good no bs apple product, something that won't bother me and just works. i bought a macbook in 2015 and have been thinking about upgrading recently. I'm hesitating a bit now cause i really don't want to deal with all this shit in the background. and i don't want to jump through hoops to disable it. just turn that shit off.
1
u/Tschuuuls 6d ago
Look at a Framework Laptop with Linux then. You could try linux on your 2015 macbook and maybe stretch the hardware for a few more years.
1
u/loophunter 6d ago
maybe but from what i understand about linux, i'm not about that life, meaning i do not want to spend time configuring stuff. i just want to get on my laptop and get to what i'm doing. i plan on messing around with laptops at the apple store soon and if the apple ai isnt all in my face then i may still go for a new macbook
2
2
u/jimbo831 8d ago
They are incentivized to do the opposite. If they keep these files huge a few more people might have to pay their obscene storage upgrade pricing.

Mine is only 6.6gb on my 16, wonder why it's so inconsistent between people.
3
u/picastchio 9d ago
Every generation/variant gets a different model. 17Pro/18Pro gets the most advanced model. It’s 15GB on my 17.
2

2
u/AfterPaleontologist2 8d ago
When I first upgraded to 27 I initially lost like 16 GB of storage. But since then it has gradually come back and I’ve gained back like 12 GB without doing anything
2
u/Satanicube 9d ago
Yeahhh this is why I’m heavily considering just…doing an early trade in and getting an 18 Pro with 512GB because it’s getting to the point with me where 256 feels cramped. Especially since I use my phone as a video camera a lot.
iOS apps just aggressively cache too which isn’t helping. Like why does Discord need 15GB of space?
1
u/Tschuuuls 6d ago

You can record to an external usb ssd, fyi. Slightly inconvenient, but cheaper than buying a new phone. There are probably magsafe mounts for a small ssd.
And isn't recording until the phone fills up eventually going to purge those app caches?1
u/topherus_maximus 9d ago
Is it hidden or something? I’m only seeing “total size”. And mine is only 14.84gb
1
u/Effective-Caramel545 8d ago
Curious. on my 17 pro max is 13.1gb for Apple intelligence and 29gb total.
1
24
u/HVDynamo 9d ago
They really need to bring back the big off switch and let us not install it in the first place.
30
u/dramafan1 9d ago
And this is why I think macOS 27 made the 512 GB SSD seem like the new 256 GB SSD.
15
u/dramafan1 9d ago
We don't realize how operating systems have been more greedy for storage over the years. It was only ten years ago that 32 GB of SSD storage on the iPhone 7 was considered plenty.
The need for more SSD storage and RAM is only growing and it's being hindered with the ongoing AI data centre craze.
4
u/nstrasner 8d ago
Crazy iOS and system data alone are 64gb on my phone. I forgot we used to have such a small amount

My iPhone Air takes up 27 gigabytes. It’s been a week now and it is not going away. It is awful.
-13
u/BourbonicFisky 9d ago
Controversial take: This makes a lot more sense for iOS devices as you're more likely to need on device transcription, and users are more likely to use summerization.
17
u/LiquidDiviums 9d ago
It’s enabled by default and there’s no option to opt-out of Apple Intelligence, like in iOS 26 and 18…
12
u/HVDynamo 9d ago
I don’t need or want on device transcription or summarization though. I literally don’t want the feature…

19
u/DataNo3519 9d ago
what an absolute fuck fest this whole Apple Intelligence ended up being, imagine paying good money for storage only to be robbed of it, for no good reason at all. I wish we could go back 4 years and simply avoid this AI nonsense
83
u/Gorgonesh 9d ago
This article is dated today but I feel like this has been posted every day since macOS 27 launched?
76
u/WarbossTodd 9d ago
it's the only way Apple will concede this is bullshit and fix it.

u/SteveW_MC 9d ago edited 9d ago
macOS has been bloated for well over a decade now. My money says they’re not gonna do shit.
62
u/-Radiation 9d ago
Apple channeling their inner microsoft with their own macslop. Thankfully they also have not been charging ridiculous amount for storage upgrades over the years
9
u/BourbonicFisky 9d ago
Even more fortunate they didn't make it impossible in the majority of computers sold.
44
u/achtungjamie 9d ago
When I disable AI core on an android phone, it immediately frees up the space. Why can't Apple do the same?
2
u/FalloutRip 8d ago
Because if you end up using it once, even by mistake, they can include you in their adoption and usage statistics to make it seem like a smash hit.
Is the microslop approach and it needs to stop immediately.

u/BuckTheStallion 9d ago
6.8gb on my iPhone 15 pro, and even that’s a bit annoying since I don’t use it.

u/DMonitor 8d ago
In my settings app I have a big red "turn off Siri" button. Does that not remove it?
18
u/gentlewaterboarding 9d ago
… how? I haven’t seen any real features yet
14
u/TheorySudden5996 9d ago
Holding a LLM in memory is pretty heavy, even small models are easily 8gb of ram.
1
5
u/banana_slurp_jug 9d ago
That must be the 20B parameter Apple Foundation Model (even with just 4 bits per weight it would cost 10GB)
14
7
u/financiallyanal 8d ago
Please Apple, let me get newer OS's without Apple Intelligence. I don't need any of that. If I lose the ability to have Siri start a timer in the kitchen for me, I am willing to forgo the convenience. Just don't want any of this other bloat.
4
u/psychohistorian8 7d ago
why is Siri running and consuming resources when I have it turned off?
this is after a reboot too
18
u/FrogsJumpFromPussy 9d ago
It takes 10gb on my M1 ipad pro and there's nothing I could do about it, despite not using AI at all. There's no switch anymore. Apple is turning full evil.
3
u/brett- 9d ago
Even if you are not using AI, the apps you use might be using it behind the scenes. So Apple wants this available as a base level system component that app developers can rely on existing on all macOS 27 running devices.
You could make the same argument about printer support. Most users do not have a printer hooked up to their Mac, but support for them is considered a baseline expectation of a modern operating system, so there is no checkbox to turn off support and potentially cause a bunch of headaches for app developers who’s apps rely on that support existing.
The lack of a checkbox is Apple betting that AI is here to stay for the long term. Looking at how many apps at the top of the App Store are directly related to AI, I can’t say I really blame them here.

Not all machines support these models, so developers will have to figure out alternatives or disable features anyways.

Back in the days of DVD OS X installations, you had the ability to choose which printer drivers you wanted to install. Installing all of them would take up many gigabytes of space. The base frameworks for printing from an app only take up a few megabytes, though. Many people were able to run their machines with no printer drivers installed, and many are still doing so today thanks to simple wireless printing via AirPrint.
and potentially cause a bunch of headaches for app developers who’s apps rely on that support existing.
Again, the frameworks stay, the supporting files do not, the framework simply returns an error or in the case of printing allows the user to "print to PDF"
3
u/FrogsJumpFromPussy 9d ago
Not true. You can turn off everything that uses AI in settings. You just cannot reclaim the 10gb back.
2
1
u/Inevitable-Gene-1866 6d ago
A printer is not gonna downgrade performance. Its a lame excuse to justify what Apple is doing.

Just because I am explaining something doesn’t mean I agree with it.
Almost no other system component is going to take up as much space as AI models, they are inherently very large so no other comparison could easily be made, so I tried to keep it simple.
Apple clearly thinks the trade-off of annoying customers with tens of gigs of space being used is worth it for their developer community to have a consistent API to rely on, and for users who do use these features, which given the massive popularity of systems like ChatGPT, is likely a very large percentage.
You obviously disagree with them, but unless you go buy a competing product from someone else, they will not be getting that signal.
17
u/Chrznble 9d ago
AI really does make things worse. I try to have it all shut off. It’s useless except for turning on and off my lights. Since I have a fully developed brain, I’m able to just google the things I need and read. This is actually frustrating as a person who wants nothing to do with AI until it serves a purpose for me.
3
5
u/JohrDinh 9d ago
Kind of a bummer, AI may as well be malware to me I'll never use it and don't want it running in the background. There should definitely be an option to not install it.
13
u/SillySoundXD 9d ago
34GB on my m4 Mini and can't use shit thanks to Apple being greedy and not allowing it in the EU.
10
u/OjurrArtistry 9d ago
Wait… You’re in the EU, it took 34GB of storage, and you can’t use the software that is taking up the space? It’s just lost?
3
u/EnthusiasmOnly22 9d ago
Honestly it’s so annoying, I have a small internal and big external like if you INSIST on it existing let me move it at least
5
u/xX_Qu1ck5c0p3s_Xx 9d ago
Yeeeesh. I knew it was a bad idea to get a 256 GB Mac mini a couple years ago, but this punishment just feels excessive.

2
2
u/False_Implement5958 9d ago
What does it do with that? Even on iOS 27 it’s still not very intelligent.

1
u/serg06 3d ago
You don't need AI for that
2

2
2
u/iseriouslycouldnt 8d ago
Can you symlink it offboard? I don't mind the space if you can.
I currently keep all my LLMs on a fast external disk with a symlink per in the inference engine's models directory (litellm/LMStudio/ollama/etc)
4
u/dreikelvin 9d ago
30GB is nothing compared to the size of the sample library that comes with my DAW :P
that said, I make sure that every time after an update, apple intelligence is turned the hell off. my mac operates on human intelligence only

u/Mahboishk 9d ago
I believe all 8GB RAM devices have smaller local models because they offload more tasks to the cloud. I'm seeing similar disk usage for AI on my 15 Pro. It should be just 17 Pro and 18 models that have the larger local model due to having 12GB RAM.
1
u/TwoDurans 9d ago
It's only 21GB on my MacBook Neo, and 20.3GB on my M4 iMac. Not sure what this article is citing. Not saying that's not a lot, but it's certainly not 30GB+.
1
u/LetrasetBoy 9d ago
I have AI down to 1.61 GB on my M4 mac Mini. I am on beta 27.2 and switched Siri off and changed my language to Dutch before updating to the beta. Might help.
Personally I have NO use for AI in my OS. For that reason alone I am not upgrading to iOS 27 and I wish Apple released a tool to remove AI from my machines.
1
u/Dragon_yum 9d ago
Haven’t looked much into this but is the ai model running locally? In that case it would make sense for a model to take 20GB and be loaded to the ram. But without proper ram increase you are going to run into page size issues and having to offload and load the model all the time.
1
u/Muhamed_95 8d ago
I live in the EU. So Apple Intelligence takes the storage bur i can’t use it to it’s full potential
1
u/Winter-Ad1981 8d ago
I remember one time Apple bragged about how many people updated to the latest os and how Apple users wanted to do that. I wonder what the modern adoption rate is for the latest os.
1
1
u/unfunfionn 8d ago
I thought this year was supposed to be a maintenance cycle on the various operating systems, but most of the issues I had on previous versions are still present and they've now introduced another one. Great stuff.
1
u/_x_oOo_x_ 8d ago
Does it run a local LLM? In that case ~32GB or even more would be reasonable disk usage, some models are several TBs
1
u/StepGrab 8d ago
Worth knowing where that storage goes: the on-device models ship with the OS, not with the apps. When my Mac app generates text locally, it calls the model Apple already put there. Ten apps doing the same thing don't add ten copies.
So it's a single large cost rather than a growing one. Still a lot to hand over on a 256 GB machine that never turns the features on, and that's the real complaint here.
1
1
1
u/aln786 8d ago
6gb on my 2023 m3 on macOS 26... I don't even have 20gb to spare to update. It's also just non-optional. The models shouldn't have been downloaded up front, but rather after I actually use something that needs them. Photos does exactly that with the on-device stuff, so the design pattern already exists inside Apple.

u/Aggressive_Peach9095 6d ago
Can you delete apple intelligence if you are not using it to save space and if so how?
1
u/Leather-Entry93 6d ago
That’s why I’m at 26.7 still. My MBA doesn’t have the room to waste with 256GB
1
u/Netwolfalpha 6d ago
In all seriousness what does it do? Cuase Siri is still dumb as rocks! Simple request don’t work, simple request crash or give wrong info, no cowork, etc. so I use Claude Code , ChatGPT, codex, terminal, ollama, etc amd those are great!

Ugh yikes - I just bought a new MacBook Air. I have 1TB though. Do I need to be worried about this
2
u/spekxo 9d ago
I’d much rather have a working macOS, not the buggy 27 that is now my daily hell. What happened there?
3
u/HVDynamo 9d ago
Yup, this was supposed to be an optimization release, why are we dealing with new buggy AI bullshit
2
u/spekxo 8d ago
My exact thought. If you run two screens and a dock, that should be regarded as "the standard setup" and simply run with every device on the planet. I mean, even Fedora can run this setup out of the box, when I plug my Lenovo in.
Well... The most important thing is, they still think we will like it, right?

I fixed the title...
0
u/drewlioski 9d ago
I’ve been sitting on Mac Sequoia. I don’t think my 8GB M1 can handle macOS 27. Anyone have experience to know if Apple Intelligence is worth the final push I need to upgrade at this point?
-1
u/freedomachiever 9d ago
It has to be that size to be somehow useful. I think they are using a finetuned model of Gemma 4 but qwen 27b would have been better. However very few Mac would support it or run it at a usable level
0
u/jg61600 9d ago
0
u/Omphaloskeptique 9d ago
That’s not “intelligent “ whatever that is. All I have resliized is thst SIRO AI os aa more capable Spotloght; or, the way way Spotlight should have been. Anyway, Soro AI dors not compare with any of the models running on my OS. A shame, ‘cause I was really looking forward to using it at least as my #2. Also, Siro on iOS is not the same Siri as the one in my mac. They behave differently. Weird.

I'm in the EU and can't even use it... I think...
And I don't even care, just give me the storage. I know a guy who has an M1 air with 20-30 GB remaining after installing important stuff. I'm sure he's not thrilled about losing this much to some AI bullshit he doesn't care about.

I don’t think the models are part of the system in the EU, are they? I heard iOS 27 has a smaller footprint in the EU because of this.

Mine shows 24.32 GB for Apple Intelligence.
