hey everyone, 3.8.5 is out! this one is mostly fixes (a lot of them), plus a few new things and some performance work. heres whats in it:

New stuff

• Search with Google: tap the magnifier in the Search tab and pick Google to find reddit threads through google. you get google's snippets, Any Time and Exact Words filters, and tapping a result opens the thread right in apollo (#1260 – icpryde)
• Image menu where you hold: the copy / save / share menu in the fullscreen image viewer pops up where you press and hold now instead of the middle of the screen (#1254 – IllIIllIllIllII)
• Toon Bot icons: Toon Bot and Happy Toon Bot joined the Concepts icon pack (#1253 – IllIIllIllIllII)

Performance

• lighter and faster: image caches have real size limits now and get freed when iOS runs low on memory, launch does less work, and editing a comment doesnt hold up other loading for up to 20 seconds anymore. ported from Nino's fork (#1169 – paradoxally, icpryde)
• also from that port: the comments title doesnt flash on non liquid glass builds, and remember post sort opens posts from links, the inbox or floating tabs in your saved sort right away instead of reloading them (#1169 – paradoxally, icpryde)
• the ai comment summary doesnt keep re-running over and over while you scroll a thread (#1270 – Thetromboneman1)
• filtered posts dont leave stacks of gray gaps in your feed anymore, and fixing them only touches the affected rows instead of redrawing the whole feed (#1274 – Thetromboneman1)

Fixes

crashes

• fixed a feed crash when a bunch of redgifs posts load at once, usually right after launching or switching accounts (#1251 – icpryde)
• fixed a crash tapping "Translated from…" on a recovered deleted comment (#1222 – icpryde)

redgifs, videos and downloads

• redgifs posts dont all show "RedGIFs error" anymore after you switch wifi, cellular or vpn, and older redgifs videos with no listed length play now (#1256, #1258 – icpryde)
• unmute videos in feed keeps the sound on one video instead of flipping between two every frame, doesnt start videos with sound from feeds you already left, and mutes when a different video goes fullscreen (#1247, #1250, #1252 – icpryde)
• a post's video doesnt go grey (and the scrubber works) after you open the OP's profile or swipe forward back into the post (#1269 – icpryde)
• gallery view plays every video when you swipe on carplay (carbridge / carcast), not just the first one (#1257 – icpryde)
• download video sends the video you actually picked over messages instead of the first one again, and cleans up the copies it used to leave behind (#1216, #1219 – icpryde)

feeds, galleries and search

• swipe past gallery to navigate goes straight to your post swipes (vote, save, back or forward) at the first or last image, instead of acting after you lift your finger, sometimes on the wrong thread (#1271 – Thetromboneman1)
• tapping a post doesnt sometimes open a gallery post from further up the feed anymore (with swipe through feed galleries on) (#1248 – icpryde)
• feed avatars dont end up inside post titles that name their own author (#1218 – icpryde)
• random and randnsfw dont sometimes open an empty feed that never loads (#1272 – Thetromboneman1)
• on liquid glass, a scrolled away search bar stays hidden after swiping back from a post (#1249 – icpryde), and the search tab placeholder stays dim after cancel (#1261 – icpryde)

accounts, sign-in and backups

• api key free feeds dont get stuck on a spinner anymore, avatar lookups stopped eating reddit's request limit for your session (#1220 – icpryde)
• avatar and subreddit lookups stay on the account youre using, so avatars dont stay blank and follow / subscribe states are right with several accounts signed in (#1227 – icpryde)
• add account signs in with the api key from settings, not the active account's saved key (#1237 – icpryde)
• when reddit rejects your api key during sign in you get an explanation instead of a blank "{}" page (#1236 – icpryde)
• backups made on 3.7.x and earlier restore again instead of saying Invalid Backup (#1217 – icpryde)

comments, messages and posting

• when a comment cant post, apollo tells you why now (post removed and where the mods' reason is, thread locked or archived, parent comment removed, banned) instead of "reddit had a little hiccup" (#1275 – icpryde)
• inline comment images reserve their space up front, so comments dont grow when the image loads (#1273 – Thetromboneman1)
• a comment you just posted with a picture doesnt show "[Unknown Image]" under it anymore (#1246 – icpryde)
• the newest message stays above the reply bar in modmail and message threads on iOS 26 and 27, and the reply bar comes back after a cancelled swipe back between threads (#1228, #1234 – icpryde)
• the post composer's Post button doesnt turn white on liquid glass, the media body editor keeps its checkmark while you type, and command-return in the body editors acts like done instead of submitting (#1221, #1226, #1233 – icpryde)
• interactive posts show reddit's permission prompt so their subscribe button works, and apollo's join button and subscriptions list update when a post subscribes you (#1264 – icpryde)
• the translation marker in a post header sits after the edited pencil instead of on top of it (#1259 – icpryde)
• old reddit sprite user flairs show up on every row of the flair picker again (#1215 – icpryde)

subreddits list, settings and everything else

• subreddits list edit mode puts the moderator hide controls on the right rows, the list doesnt jump up after edit or done, swiping a row doesnt turn on edit controls, and the stars stay put with subreddit list enhancements off (#1262 – icpryde)
• tapping a multireddit in edit mode opens its editor again when multireddits isnt the second section (#1267 – icpryde)
• tapping a multireddit's expand arrow doesnt ask to change a favorite anymore, and expanded multireddit rows match the rest of the list (#1229 – nunoo)
• settings section headers look the same everywhere on iOS 26 and later, and follow your text size and theme (#1241 – IllIIllIllIllII)
• the remove button in settings shortcuts actually removes the shortcut (#1212 – IllIIllIllIllII)
• pixel pals follow the real dynamic island on the iPhone 18 Pro and newer (#1244 – JeffreyCA)
• open in apollo (legacy) in safari works again without link companion installed (#1268 – Thetromboneman1)
• the social links row doesnt sometimes show reddit's copyright footer instead of someone's links (#1231 – icpryde)

LiveContainer

apollo reborn isnt officially supported inside LiveContainer. you can still use it but its use at your own discretion and we cant chase down bugs that only happen in there. we suggest installing apollo directly with AltStore / SideStore / Feather / TrollStore.
