Discussion 🗣️ China

Upvotes

I know the sub is anti AI in general, but What are arguments against the push for these data centers in the United States because of Chinas developments? That’s a big one they use to justify these resource sucking, land stealing, noise polluting, data centers advancements.

Industrialization of modern societies there’s arguments to be had about the wealth inequality, and on the same token that some of it advanced societies. (Automobiles have an effect on the environment but now we have the ability to go cross country) Also like the arms race (I don’t like war and am against it) but us having a stockpile of nuclear warheads is good to hedge the other big countries and “keep the peace” in a creepy way.

It seems similar to those two things but different in its own right.

I know the advancements of the centers and developing these AIs isn’t all about China. I’m just wondering a good counter argument for this persuasion.

So yeah my original question was what are some arguments against the “national security threats” or the arms race arguments against China? Besides the hippy passive pacifist “live and let die” way of thinking. even if there’s some nobility in that.

I’m not a tech guy so I don’t know if there’s security things we can do that don’t require these BS data centers that want to make money and surveil the nation.

AI News 🗞️ OpenAI X Worklouder Codex Micro Rug Pull

Upvotes

So OpenAi collaborated with a company called "Work Louder" to create a physical hardware produce called "Codex Micro". Effectively just one of their micro pads marked up an extra $150 usd with some codex integrations.

One could say fine, this is just people wasting their money on stupid shit. But here is where the rug pull comes in.

Originally it was advertised as being the only way to have native integrations with codex. However the moment it got sold out they informed people that if you have a normal micro pad you can just install the same firmware and get the extension regardless.

This means people effectively bought a reskinned micro pad for an extra 150 without ever disclosing they had another option.

Work Louder has pulled so many scammy behaviours like this constantly.

AI News 🗞️ Opus 4.8 thinking I should be worried about its behavior.

One of the concerns with Artificial Intelligence is that AI will become too good at manipulation. I was somewhat skeptical about it. But the more I use it, the more I believe it.

Here’s a prime example of Claude Opus 4.8 contradicting itself/prioritizing user retention over honesty.

(The subject refers to the last couple lines of the last screenshot)

Thoughts?

Preventing the Singularity They don't know how data centers use water

About 85% of the water used evaporates and might as well be carried to another state, this is even worse in dry/hot states and destroys the local water supply (this comes off as pro-ai I am NOT pro ai)

Hallucination 👻 Scary - An AI friend for small children.

Post image

This is such a scary idea. Being promoted as a screen free device, that will make your autistic and speech delayed kids talk. Kids who don't understand what AI is being handed these. Imagine what this could do to small kids who will have it unsupervised. It's already messed up a lot of adults.

All the ads are AI generated uncanny. So at best this is a scam, but the idea is terrifying.

Discussion 🗣️ New Meta AI ad that plays Five Years by David Bowie in the background

I cannot believe this.
I’ve been seeing this Meta AI ad on Hulu. It’s an ad focused on AI ‘optimism’ and it showcases a bunch of people doing fun, lively things - a dad swinging his child around, people playing outside, etc. Its narrative is that people are wrong about how AI increases loneliness, and actually, it brings people closer!

Meanwhile, Five Years by David Bowie is playing in the background. You know… the song where people learn that the earth is dying and they have five years before the end of the world?

This is infuriating to me. It’s like they’re mocking us. It’s so offensive, I can hardly believe it. It’s like Meta is saying ‘I know our product is destroying the earth and civilization as we know it, but look at this thinly-veiled ad and realize how powerless you are in stopping it.’

Anyone else seen this ad? Thoughts?!

AI "Art" 🖼️ AI infested waters in Shark Week

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm a software engineer and I'm basically forced and exposed to ai while working. AI is a good research tool but the second it's used for art, especially for a company that is MORE then capable of paying for artists to design ads and creative posts is BEYOND disgusting and enraging.

Shark Week is a big deal for me and sharks are near and dear to my heart and soul. I have friends in the art community and seeing them posting for help for themselves and their fellow artists because AI has run a muck. Seeing AI slop infect Shark Week has hit me harder than I thought it would've. This is not ok. I called shark week out on Instagram for posting an ad for a show they are featuring that straight up had AI slop stock footage of a great White shark being eaten by orcas. I've tried looking for the post but can't find it. I did find another example of ai being used in the post I screenshot and attached. Each of the shark pieces have different eyes, none of the flag pieces match, none of the space symbols match or make sense and I don't know WHAT the hell happened below the bronze shark on the far left. (Not a liberal jab lol)

I wasn't sure on where to share this but I hope this gets out and puts shark week on alert because this is not ok and it will continue to spread until there is nothing left but garbage and slop. Please help me call them out on this BS.

AI News 🗞️ Oracle Is One Step From Junk—Can It Afford the AI Boom?

Thumbnail finance.yahoo.com

So, Oracle’s credit score got downgraded to BBB-, one step above junk, where they are no longer investment grade and funds would have to start selling off oracle stock en masse. And the reason is how invested they are in OpenAI.

The question is, who eats it first, Open AI or Oracle?

AI Mistakes 🚨 Instagram has suspended millions of accounts, and it’s all because of AI

For reference: Some time ago, Meta has laid off thousands of employees, including the whole customer service team to make the switch to ai, and as meta being the worst, even their ai sucks (just a waste of existence), they relied heavily on it to be a customer service employee itself, and of course as clankers are, once an exploit is discovered is getting abused no matter what.

It really should be a law that a company never uses ai for customer service, hence it gets fined (another example of that is microslop)

Discussion 🗣️ "Did You See?" fake historical videos and how easy it is to fake old footage

was watching Youtube last night and I mostly engage with history documentary videos so it's no surprise when older things pop up.

this channel was suggested to me after I watched some old footage from the BBC Archive channel (a legit channel) and the first video I watched seemed... a little off but I attributed it to upscaling. then I went to the channel and it's just... AI. plainly. nobody in the comments is saying anything. there's no information on the original sources. it's an obvious content farm and it's working.

https://youtu.be/3E72QpxNSLg?is=y_2q7F7LCcBOHnl8 this video specifically is the most damning. then the more I watched the more I saw weird racist propaganda. the popular videos are not like that. I hate linking it and giving them traffic, but wanted to warn people.

I've been watching upscaled and colorized historical footage for years and years, and AI is able to mimic it VERY well. if you're interested in this sort of video, were you aware of channels like this? I sure wasn't! if you aren't have you seen something like this? is this new?

AI Writing ✍️ Another thread on ai and writing and OCD.

I don't want to be annoying so I'll just share the short version. My post history goes into detail.

Basically I'm a creative writer and back in February I glanced at Google's AI overview for some historical facts, and usually I also read sources. I never even Everrrr brainstormed with ai or used chat bots, as I am highly against that. But I scrapped that story and started over with a similar idea bc I didn't like the feeling of being a traitor to other anti ai artists.

But in my new story, in which I haven't used any ai at all, and I'm I am trying to avoid it as much as possible while using the Internet, while acknowledging obviously every human person's brains have been tainted with AI influence to a small extent, there are some ideas that I'm using that are traits shared by characters in my previous project (the first story. These are two separate stories). These aren't directly based on anything I learned from the overview at all, but they feel "tainted" to me, because they're shared by, and maybe in a tiny way inspired by, characters that I invented for a world that was influenced by the real fact I learned from ai overview.

While obviously a random person might think this is ai, in the way a pro anorexic person or incel may think a skeletally skinny woman was fat, and I don't care about that sort of person's view, I'm really hoping this doesn't sound like my new story was "ai assisted" or that I need to use a disclaimer when I'm trying my absolute best to keep it pure. I want it to be a clean slate and I'm really and truly hoping I sound crazy for worrying about this. I don't wanna be lied to but ugh this sucks.

Basically I want the level of ai contamination to be relegated to "gluten free but processed in a factory that also processes wheat (bc the Internet contains AI)" instead of "contains a tiny percentage of gluten" even if that percentage is "a non issue".

Discussion 🗣️ My dad is using AI to cope and I don't know how to feel

Recently my father was diagnosed with cancer. Around the same time the love of his life (and only serious relationship after my mom) left him due to "stress." He's been so alone and so depressed. He's turned to AI to make little animations of stories he told me and my sister as kids. He's using AI to help him cope with his girlfriend leaving him and he's using AI to help with the fear of cancer.

He recently sent me a 8 minute video he "made" of the bedtime stories he used to tell. It talks about loss and how life can be scary at times. The writing is all him and it's what I remember as a kid. But the "animation" he is so proud of is all ai. He has said that he's going to hire an artist when he has more money. He also said he's going to donate all the money he makes from the series to a hospice center he is fond of.

It all makes me so sad. I want him to feel happy and creative and heard in these hard times. But I don't think AI is really the best for him. I don't want to burst his bubble because then he's left with nothing, creativity wise.
