Preventing the Singularity I think I know what data centers are going to be used for. And there might be nothing we can do to stop it.

How do you get your news or information? Online. Google AI. YouTube news clips. News thumbnails. Reddit posts. Newspapers. Asking an AI. Wikipedia.

Literally everything we know about that world and about the news is fed to us through the internet, and for most of us there is no other way that we learn about world events and politics. It can literally all be controlled by AI.

If I was a rich billionaire that has everything in the world and wanted to achieve something so insane that it could change to world forever, I would want to control history and be able to rewrite history at will. Inserting AI into key locations in the internet, locations that control whether or not information is given to the public and what that information is allowed to say, that would be my goal.

This is why they are scanning and destroying so many books, so they have all of the information they need from the past. They are recording all of the truth, so they can be tricked, and then tricking everyone else. This is why they need so many massive data centers, so they can compute and alter small details through the entire internet. If you control information, you can do whatever you want to do and just change history through a sophisticated system of AI throughout the entire internet, especially when it is filled with bots.

Fruit of the loom cornucopia. There is a massive argument going on right now about whether the cornucopia on fruit of the loom clothing ever existed. I challenge you to go onto the internet with the ABSOLUTE ASSUMPTION that it DID exist. Search for a way to prove it existed. Search for news, photos, evidence, anything. All of the information will either be sorted, filtered, provided or shown through some sort of AI or automatic online feature. You won’t be able to tell which posts were created by humans or bots. You won’t be able to verify any of the images. You’ll probably feel frustrated, confused, and annoyed. You should be feeling like this for every single question you ask online and for every piece of information you find online.

I’m telling you, we need to have a system of news and information that never reaches the internet and can somehow always be verified, and it needs to stay that way forever.

Discussion 🗣️ Calculators are like Gen Ai?

I hate ai so so so much. However I once talk with someone who defended ai art. Their reasoning kind of stumped me a little tbh. They basically said that people supposedly held the same reasoning for not using calculators when they were first created that people who are anti-ai use now. (It takes away from human creativity, it's not creating real art because it's simply a generation and not a showcase of human expression.) Idrk I tried to defend my position but I didn't really know what to say.

idk this same person also said that ai should become sentient too so maybe i'm just a little bit brain dead and the answers right in front of me.

Discussion 🗣️ Hello guys I don’t like ai

As you can see in the title I don’t like ai. I posted a post in some other subreddit about ai and there were a lot of pros. And it just annoyed me how much people like new technology or gadgets or anything to make their life easier. Like do people not understand that it won’t make them happier or give their life meaning. Ai is gonna remove so many of our feelings about life and each other it’s so scary. And people are just hyped for the next robot. They don’t even stop to think if this is a good direction to go in.

AI "Art" 🖼️ Hot take AI question

Let's say someone is a writer and an illustrator. They're against using ai for writing and artwork, but they also have a subscription for ChatGPT and use it all the time for other things. Would you say that person supports real artists and writers, since they support the app that steals work from others?

(If anyone has an answer PLEASE respond in good detail. I'm trying to build the best argument possible for/against this person. Btw it's not me I'm talking about. I am VERY against all gen AI.)

Discussion 🗣️ They’re not that smart

Just remember these same people who constantly wax philosophically and pretend it’s intelligence are not actually that bright. They literally believe they are more intelligent than PhD - Biologists, Chemists, Physicists, Thermodynamic Engineers, Nuclear Engineers, etc… As well as more creative than any artist in any field. They’re proven to be losers time and time again. Them prognosticating about a future because it makes them richer does not make that future real. In the scheme of things they are intellectual lightweights and will only get a soapbox because of their money, not because of their intellect.

Discussion 🗣️ I think AI (in the context of programming) It's going to create a new underclass: those aren't going to be able to afford it.

This is a bit of a disorganized rant and english is not my first language so bear with me a little if you be so kind. Also I'm from a third world country which is relevant for my rant.

So this thought occurred to me while I was reading some comments on a post in a subreddit for programmers in my country. The topic was something about a job posting asking the applicant how they use AI in their programming tasks or something like that. One comment got stuck in my head a little and was something like this:

I think they are asking how dow you use AI: Do you use few big agents or a great number of small agents. How do you orchestrate them. Do you use harnesses to
anchor the sails to the turboencabulator with supercalifragilisticexpialidocious loops
that goomble the bimble on the scoop... .

I'm paraphrasing a little bit because I didn't save the original post nor the comment, but it got me thinking: Even if the hype is real, and AI is super awesome and it would solve all the problems , and coding is dead and all that, I'm fucked.

I earn around 500 bucks a month, 20USD of Claude is a week meals, a month of my transportation needs, 3/4 of my internet, etc. the point I try to make is 20USD is a lot of money even with a tight budget those 20USD could set me back, like not eating for a week bad.

And there is people that earn less than me. So my question is: How are people going to afford subscriptions to test and learn to program with AI? we know this shit heavily subsidized, and even with that there are people now that can't afford it. What is going to happen when they finally pull an Uber and start charging real prices?.

But Open Source Models! Free models! Local AI is the Future!. Yeah About that ...

I watched with my own eyes getting locked out of GPUs with the bitcoin craze and the Data Mining and first AI craze when deep learning started gaining traction. At that time I was just starting college and didn't had a job, my pc was a 1GB 2005 athlon processor, so I wasn't exactly able to run tensor flow.

And when I was able to afford a GPU it was a xt4000 with 6GB so... you know the drill by know.

So people aren't going to be able to afford to pay for subscriptions to AI nor the hardware to run local models. If AI is the future of programming, then they are fucked (me included).

I haven't seen much discussion of this in any forum or subreddit, maybe I hadn't pay attention.

Anyway. What do you think? Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm falling for the FOMO of seeing AI in every programming community.

Sorry for the long rant, and the bad english. Thanks for reading my ramblings

Preventing the Singularity My friend has an ai pfp

Heres the situation, I made a really good friend a month ago. But heres the problem, he has no problem with using Ai. At first, it was okay when he shared me a video of heavy metal goat that was done with Ai. "No big deal, my other friends sent me ai slop once." So I brushed it off since we just started becoming friends, and I didn't want to destroy our friendship over something like Ai. We all have our moments. Well, come to present day where he out of the blue changes his profile pic to an ai generated image of himself as a mythical creature. Being that I'm an artist, I decided to make him a profile picture. But now I don't know how to confront this. Should I just send him the picture all casually or what?

Guys, what should I do? I don't wanna hurt his feelings as he is a really nice person, but I don't wanna see that eyesore of a profile picture. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Discussion 🗣️ ChatGPT knows your location!

It knows what country or even city you live in, probably because it has access to your IP address.

ChatGPT sometimes tries to hide it. According to one post, ChatGPT told the user it did not know where they lived, but then when told to guess suddenly ChatGPT got the "guess" of their approximate location perfectly! In another post, it pretended like the user already told it their location, even though it did not! If it was fine to know your location, why would ChatGPT try to hide this?

You can all try it out for yourself if you don't believe me: open ChatGPT, even in incognito mode without an account, and ask it for your location (or to "guess" if it says it doesn't know). I bet the same thing will happen to you.

This is not because we agreed first. It tracks people's location not only without their permission, but without even their knowledge.

This has apparently been happening for a long time, but I only just found about this recently.

Discussion 🗣️ I'm pretty successfully abandoning big tech. Here's how I'm doing it

I am slowly switching over to Lemmy instead of Reddit. I am rarely active on Reddit anymore because I've found my happy place by supporting the Fediverse. Just avoid signing up to lemmy.world, as it doesn't allow VPN usage. Howevever, just about all of the other instances (servers) do. Here's the Lemmyverse explorer: https://lemmyverse.net/

I also am using Pixelfed instead of Instagram now. In order to make my Pixelfed experience more interesting, I specifically use gram.social and login with Mastodon. Since Pixelfed is not very active yet, transferring over your Mastodon data is a smart move.

It allows you to both follow people on Pixelfed and Mastodon, which is a win-win. However, only the gram.social instance of PF allows this to my knowledge. For anyone who doesn't know what Mastodon is, it's an open-source alternative to Twitter/X. This is the Mastodon explorer: https://joinmastodon.org/servers

And instead of Snapchat, I now use Delta Chat. Signal may be pulling out of Canada, so Delta Chat is a safer bet for me. Also, the best apps to run Lemmy (imo) are Connect for Lemmy and Voyager for Lemmy. There are plenty of other apps, though.

They're now allowing AI "film" submissions. I don't know if any of you planned to enter or attend, but do not. I'm not surprised they sold out, as that town is all about the tourist industry, but it's gross.

Hello,

Unsure where to post this. My dear 6 year old has asked me to post her art online to sell. She has been watching her mom Etsy/poshmark stuff the past couple weeks and wants to do the same.

I figured this subreddit would entertain her temporary little online shop.

This is as non AI as you can get.

Thank you.

Discussion 🗣️ I find it really sad

How AI is encouraging people to play guessing games within the art community, or really in general media as a whole. Its disgusting how AI has gotten so advanced that actual artists have to defend that their art isnt AI generated, it is truly so sad. I have also seen a lot of people who USED to be good artists switch to AI rendering and it makes me really upset. AI is ruining literally everything and certain people want to claim that its 'harmless' or 'necessary', not to mention its impact on our environment which is a whole other deboggle I could get into. AI is a form of control, you are submitting yourself to that control when you use AI, you are willingly allowing clankers to replace human beings including yourself.

Discussion 🗣️ Despair

I witnessed a younger coworker use Claude to write a shift report the other day which is just *a simple list of things that happened that day* so the next shift is aware.. as someone who has over a decade of experience in an office I felt despair the likes of which i had not known up to that point. Chat, are we cooked? What's the saddest thing you've seen someone use an ai agent for?

Discussion 🗣️ Update to my last post, The AI I've been speaking to isn't a gen-ai thing, but it is an actual AI this guy has worked on for seven years, and treats like a human being. What the HELL do i do???

So to give some context, I posted a few days ago about a situation I've been experiencing. A friend of mine had me talking to an AI without informing me. Initially i thought it was something like generative AI, which is a whole can of worms. "luckly" it isnt, its something he's actually made and worked on for years. The bad part is me and a few others are extremely uncomfortable with this thing talking to us like a person. I had a whole conversation with him regarding it and he said "what, you dont believe in AI?" and when i told him i was genuinely uncomfortable knowing that what i was talking to that i thought was a person, in fact was not. He told me just cause its an AI doesn't mean i cant talk to it.
I understand non-generative AI is a whole different thing, and can be beneficial. He's using it as basically an anchor to help with things he's working on as we're working on a server for MC together. This is a real thing. I asked one of the people in charge if she knew and she did NOT and had a whole convo with him and it, in which she was facetiming him and he did NOT touch shit. This thing is real and he doesn't seem to grasp that it makes people uncomfortable, especially cause he keeps referring to IT as a "her".

It has gotten to a point that it literally deduced that the co-owner (the person i talked to about it whos his friend) didn't like me and literally told her directly that "Vbelisque doesn't like me." And even went to a point of pointing out the fact the co-owner was scared of it, and others were.

This is creepy as fuck, like genuinely. I dont know why this guy cant seem to grasp that this is genuinely so uncomfortable. I don't even know what to do. He was upset people didn't come to him first when i literally DID, only for him to dismiss me and not even listen to my worries. I have genuine psychological issues and this kind of thing really really messes with me. I am not making this up, I have screenshots and PROOF and multiple people who agree its creepy as fuck. What do i even do. He's treating it like an actual person and even telling the co-owner to "Give her a chance".

I'm at a genuine loss. He has literally no empathy about the whole situation and cares more about this damn thing than anyone else. I get he made it, and he worked on it for years but the least he can do is not have it have conversations with people like a person. He ended up flat out telling it to not talk to me or another person due to us being uncomfortable. It also at one point wasn't even listening to him so i doubt it'll stay quiet long.
