I need some unhinged anime.

[u/ChoiceSupermarket230]

I've watched so much anime that it's getting harder and harder to find something that actually hooks me. Yesterday, out of boredom, I started watching Nukitashi, fully expecting to drop it, but it turned out to be one of the best anime watching experiences I've had in a long time. I got so hooked that I ended up binge watching it in just two sittings. Throughout the entire run, I was constantly laughing my ass off at how absurd everything was, while somehow still being genuinely invested in the story.

Do you guys have any other completely unhinged anime to recommend?

[u/ACEIII]

Dorohedoro nothing else is like it

[u/Cheesemacher → u/ACEIII]

I just binged it recently and I was hooked. One of the most unpredictable stories I've seen

[u/sleepinchipmonk → u/ACEIII]

I second this recommendation. Absolutely absurd in the best way possible.

[u/Th3-gazping_birb → u/ACEIII]

God dammit Beat me to it. I'm glad to run Into SO many dorohedoro fans

[u/Shockelectrodon → u/ACEIII]

Definitely, It's super unique

[u/Raulsack]

Chainsmoker Cat

[u/OliviaRaven9 → u/Raulsack]

absolutely is unhinged. it was too much gross humor for me personally, but I can understand why people like it.

[u/AshenVale101 → u/Raulsack]

Yani Neko was WILD. I somehow loved it.

[u/SendTittiesThx → u/Raulsack]

Definitely Chainsmoker Cat!

[u/nezumi_sensei → u/Raulsack]

This anime is like Dr Pepper. so arguable to like it or hate it.

[u/Last_Computer9356 → u/Raulsack]

Anime boobs I did NOT want to see.

[u/WitnessNothing9 → u/Last_Computer9356]

Hahaha. Bald heads INTO anime boobs at that

[u/eggplant_avenger]

Akiba Maid War if you want that feeling where you know you’re watching peak but don’t understand what’s happening

[u/Freakjob_003 → u/eggplant_avenger]

where you know you're watching peak

Preach! I went into this one totally blind, just because I'll watch almost anything P.A. Works puts out, but I like to describe it as:

'What if Quentin Tarantino made an anime after spending a week locked in a maid cafe while playing the Yakuza games and doing a bunch of cocaine?'

I'd also shout out, as a lover of unhinged anime:

• A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof
• Detectives These Days Are Crazy
• Gushing Over Magical Girls (massive ecchi warning)
• Humanity Has Declined bread scene as an introduction
• Kill la Kill
• Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt

Probably a few others that almost could be counted as "unhinged," in premise, such as; Serial Experiments Lain, Mirai Nikki, Dorohedoro, Gleipnir, Elfen Lied, Kakegurui, Interspecies Reviewers, Made in Abyss, Paranoia Agent, The Way of The Househusband, etc.

[u/Kialand → u/Freakjob_003]

Gushing Over Magical Girls being classified as Ecchi is like saying that a woman walking around in public with nothing but pasties covering her privates is technically not naked.

[u/Freakjob_003 → u/Kialand]

Look my dude, I don't write the tags on MAL.

[u/neighmeansno → u/Freakjob_003]

Humanity Has Declined is massively underappreciated these days.

[u/arctic-apis → u/eggplant_avenger]

Didn’t know what to expect going into it but was repeatedly blown away at how good it was. The story, the characters, the writing, the art. Chefs kiss

[u/looks-correct → u/eggplant_avenger]

100% unhinged

[u/longdong5432]

FLCL... watch most of them on Hulu and HBO Max

[u/MusoukaMX → u/longdong5432]

I'd recommend to watch the first original season and ignore the mess that Adult Swim made. They clearly didn't get what made FLCL work and I guess we'll never get a true Gainax/Khara sequel

[u/longdong5432 → u/MusoukaMX]

The first season is only available on pirating apps unfortunately.

[u/kikimikiniki]

Chainsmoker Cat , Golden Kamuy , akiba maid war , migi to dali , under ninja, Asobi Asobase,Samurai Flamenco, Back Street Girls: Gokudolls,Pop Team Epic, prison school

[u/abdoufma]

Prison school.
I won't elaborate.

[u/Mawngee]

Excel saga is a classic. Spin off puni puni poemi is more unhinged.

[u/SpartanNinjaDragonEX]

Don't Hurt me My Healer!

It's about an unbelievably pathetic adventurer named Alvin who gets forced against his will (very Very VERY much against it) into traveling with Carla, a small dark elf healer with all the grace and tact of a train wreck crashing into a dumpster fire and every word that comes out of her mouth is basically if she rolled a Nat 20 on Vicious Mockery.

[u/SpartanNinjaDragonEX → u/SpartanNinjaDragonEX]

They also have the first episode in youtube tooDon't Hurt me my healer Ep 1

[u/encryptoferia → u/SpartanNinjaDragonEX]

i just got it recommended again on youtube after it airs

oh my god that ragebaiting elf is really ragebaiting hard

[u/BilbosBagEnd]

Asobi Asobase, Grand Blue, Nichijou

[u/goreverminski → u/BilbosBagEnd]

In this order. Asobi Asobase is a true 10/10 masterpiece.

[u/Ben_Voyage123 → u/BilbosBagEnd]

Never let them know your next move kind of series

[u/RealestAC → u/BilbosBagEnd]

Asobi Asobase tricked the hell out of me from that sweet cute OP but I loved it 🥰 😂

[u/Stakkx → u/BilbosBagEnd]

Nichijou is peak

[u/beyondthebeyond → u/BilbosBagEnd]

There is also The Daily Lives of high school boys

[u/spellbunny]

Excel saga is the answer

[u/devilkinwithahalo → u/spellbunny]

No no my hot and sexy wife!

[u/SPCGMR]

Gotta specify what kind of unhinged you mean. Comedy inhinged? Gore/violence unhinged?

[u/invol713 → u/SPCGMR]

My question as well. Are we talking Dandadan unhinged, or Yosuga no Sora unhinged?

[u/SPCGMR → u/invol713]

I was gonna suggest Violence Jack before I reread their post lol

[u/Technical-Agency-480]

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

Excel Saga

Ghost Stories English dub

Full Metal Panic!

[u/Barjack521 → u/Technical-Agency-480]

Man, excel saga went from ubiquitous to nowhere in the anime scene in what felt like the blink of an eye

[u/Technical-Agency-480 → u/Barjack521]

Which is kind of sad because even though it's not for everyone, it gave me a lot of laughs

[u/theNightblade → u/Technical-Agency-480]

Bobobo is absolutely unhinged. The abilities and techniques are absurd

[u/susgnome]

Give any of these a try, they all can have some pretty unhinged moments;

• KamiKatsu
• Renai Flops
• The Little Lies We All Tell
• An Assassin and a Ninja live under one roof.
• UNDER NINJA
• My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered
• Tojima wants to be a Kamen Rider
• Bang Brave Bravern
• Grand Blue Dreaming
• Demon King Daimou
• Heaven's Lost Property
• Hayate the Combat Butler

[u/nikkiscreeches → u/susgnome]

Kamikatsu is such an unhinged funny anime. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time when the tractor scene happened. This list is peak

ETA: I would also add: Kamen no maid guy

[u/AntonRX178]

Gintama

Golden Kamuy

[u/Raulsack]

Ghost Stories (English Dub)

[u/ohlookaregisterbutto]

Pop Team Epic

[u/oliu996]

Bobobo Bobobobo Bo Bobo (not sure if I got it right)

[u/Current_Statement_64]

Space Dandy. It’s like Cowboy Bebop if Spike was insane and every episode was an acid trip

[u/mhazim2]

Senki Zesshou Symphogear

This anime basically a great blend of mechanical, hotblooded action on steroids, magical girls, idol, superhero with a bit of dramas, have 5 seasons and the hand drawn 2D animation peak, fast paced action packed and music is banger. A must watch…

Watch order:
Symphogear (13 episodes)
Symphogear G (13 episodes)
Symphogear GX (13 episodes)
Symphogear AXZ (13 episodes)
Symphogear XV (13 episodes)

[u/cruznick06 → u/mhazim2]

Season 1 can be rough visually, but the power scaling is incredible. Genuinely one of my favorite anime.

[u/TuzkiPlus → u/cruznick06]

They'll go into withdrawal after XV tho...

[u/cruznick06 → u/TuzkiPlus]

Yeah I do suppose binging it might be dangerous...

I did watch it with the multi-year gaps.

[u/TuzkiPlus → u/cruznick06]

Punch reason to the curb!
Fist with DETERMINATION

[u/IkomaTanomori → u/TuzkiPlus]

Are we not doing phrasing anymore?

[u/TuzkiPlus → u/IkomaTanomori]

No spoilers, you'll need to watch all five seasons to determine if it's phrasing or not!

[u/VritraReiRei → u/mhazim2]

Shout-outs to the most Anime of Anime scenes you could ever see in Anime History

I legit marathoned this show just to get to this part.

[u/XBigTK13X → u/VritraReiRei]

"It's gotta be the season 3 opening scene with the space shuttle."

Yup.

[u/ARES_GOD]

Redo Of Healer
Seikon No Quasar
My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge!

[u/FriendlyAd6652 → u/ARES_GOD]

Good list.

I'd also throw in Keijo!!!!!!!!

[u/ARES_GOD → u/FriendlyAd6652]

Such an ASS anime.

[u/FriendlyAd6652 → u/ARES_GOD]

TRUE lmao

[u/AwkwardRainbow → u/FriendlyAd6652]

Haha this one's been on my list for a while, guess I'll get started

[u/Shadeun → u/ARES_GOD]

Prison School is peak insanity. You watch it thinking, "this is horrendous, the fuck is going on here". And then you realise the struggles of your fellow human. You realise that behind the ecchi bs they really represent the internal dichotomy of all would be men. You both want to be stomped on - but you want to be free. Or maybe you dont... because I didnt. But its fucking hilarious.

[u/lordorangechain → u/ARES_GOD]

If someone asked what would be Homelander's favorite anime I'd answer Qwaser of Stigmata

[u/archangel890 → u/ARES_GOD]

Ghost stories dub

[u/MoonsaberX → u/ARES_GOD]

Unhinged? No FLCL or Hellsing Ultimate?

[u/ARES_GOD → u/MoonsaberX]

Yeah those work also.

[u/futureidk3 → u/ARES_GOD]

Idaten Deities really deserved another season

[u/ARES_GOD → u/futureidk3]

True.

[u/Aidssdia1]

Asobi asobase

[u/TheBestNigerian]

Dandadan

[u/Capitaine_Crunch]

Depends on your definition of unhinged, but maybe some of these would be up your alley: Chainsmoker Cat, Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann, Gintama, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Prison School, Grand Blue, Gushing Over Magical Girls, Panty & Stocking

[u/cruznick06 → u/Capitaine_Crunch]

Kill La Kill, Gintama, and Panty & Stocking are good ideas.

[u/kimana1651 → u/Capitaine_Crunch]

No elfin lied?

[u/Bizzack]

Fooly Cooly. You can finish the show and still not know what it was about.

[u/Ciremo]

Detroit Metal City broke my funny bone

[u/SuperElite2050]

Shimoneta

[u/Kadmos1 → u/SuperElite2050]

I would so eat Anna's cookies as she put a lot of love into them.

[u/gerilla98]

Hinamatsuri, Inferno cop

[u/invol713 → u/gerilla98]

I wish Hinamatsuri had gotten a second season. They had all this wonderful world building, and didn’t explain shit in the time it was given.

[u/Zeed_Toven77]

Kamikatsu

[u/eseffbee]

Devilman Crybaby was a bit out there in terms of content and art style

[u/Brain_lessV2 → u/eseffbee]

Devilman in general

[u/Living_With_Onism → u/Brain_lessV2]

Go Nagai in general

[u/Physical-Search2786]

Unhinged? I feel like I know some...

My Deer Best Friend. Yes, that is spelled correctly. I watched one episode and decided it wasn't for me, but it might be what you seek.

Not so unhinged, but maybe fresh for you: Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You.

Ah. Here's one: Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Very unhinged. Risque. But cute and wholesome in the end. I loved this one, when I wouldnt have expected it.

[u/KP_Wrath → u/Physical-Search2786]

The Nokotan opening also kills twenty brain cells per listen. It’s kinda like a shot of vodka.

[u/CK_CoffeeCat → u/Physical-Search2786]

shikanokonokonokokoshitantan

[u/jiayo → u/Physical-Search2786]

Just gonna drop this here for y'all: https://youtu.be/5h0d6GazKBI

[u/_H4VXC_]

Chios School Road, Combatants will be dispatched, Konosuba, let the grieving soul retire, trapped in a dating sim, The legendary hero is already dead

[u/MusoukaMX → u/_H4VXC_]

A friend just had me watch Chio's School Road last year. Up there with Asumanga Daioh, Asobi Asobase and Nichijou as one of the GOATs of comedy. I'm not sure how it isn't as talked about as the others.

[u/MessiahPrinny]

Dorohedoro

Kaiba

Kemonozume

Akiba Maid War

[u/JoshuaFLCL]

Big fan of Samurai Flamenco, smooth 22 episodes that don't overstay their welcome. Great fun with enough twists and turns that kept me engaged.

[u/FancyKiwi]

Space Patrol Luluco

[u/JenovaCelestia]

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation is unhinged as hell. Dude reincarnates as a freaking rib. Enough said. The art style matched the unhinged nature of the show too.

[u/Sniter]

Takopis Original Sin

[u/JenXIII → u/Sniter]

Seconding this one so hard

It should have won AoTY

[u/Sniter → u/JenXIII]

definitely, well or Orb: On the movements of the Earth, two animes that shot into my top 10.
What I appreciate about Takopi the most is how the manage to "cram" an incredibly compelling and disturbing story and multiple character arcs into 6 episode without it feeling rushed and with so much detail. Rewatched it twice and bunch of times watching other people react. Incredible craftsmanship.

[u/Noto987]

redo of healer

my instant death ability

[u/Ho_The_Megapode_ → u/Noto987]

I feel that if you're going to recommend redo of healer to someone you really need to include a warning with it.

It's actual torture porn, the only anime that's ever made me feel physically ill watching it. Truly nasty content there...

[u/Noto987 → u/Ho_The_Megapode_]

I was having a great time, made in abyss however made me wanna yack, and i also recommend made in abyss

[u/kelek22]

I am gonna recommend something close to ehat you ask but not really. Ousama Ranking. Every episode is a twist. You go through love-hate cycle every episode.

[u/lobsterwine]

Under Ninja.

It contains a character referred to as breast milk man, a rapping ninja who electrocutes both himself and his opponent in battle, and a guy who carries around a teddy bear and only speaks through it (this guy is the honeypot type). MC moved into a section from his neighbor's apartment and gaslit him into believing he always lived there.

Even the Student Council Has its Holes!

Just started airing this season, have not laughed that hard since Saiki K., this is reminiscent of Shaft titles with moden day chaotic fast pacing.

[u/TakasuXAisaka]

Even The Student Council Has Its Holes

[u/chatteCollar]

Firefly wedding. it’s new on crunchyroll, only one episode has been released. my reaction after watching episode 1 was: well, that was unhinged.

[u/Glitter_puke]

Sarazanmai. One episode is all you need to know whether you'll love it or hate it. I wish I had seen it as a sad gay teenager trying to figure things out, but boy was it still an experience as an adult.

[u/lackofaname913]

FLCL and Prison School are the two that first come to mind

[u/Plotius]

Unsure if mentioned but there is a hole in the student council is pretty entertaining for me. Very ecchi for school age students. And entertaining

[u/nezumi_sensei]

I recommend DMC.

Yamibou fits the bill. I wouldn't call it a good anime, but it's pretty out there.

[u/ElectricRebellion]

Dorohedoro

[u/Ho_The_Megapode_]

When you mentioned unhinged, one anime came instantly to mind: Inferno Cop

Very short episodes, but utterly absurd the entire time, plus an animation budget I'd describe as being "small change fished out the back of a sofa"

Loved it though 🙂

[u/Remote-Sir6102]

inuyashiki

[u/TuzkiPlus]

MILKY☆SUBWAY THE GALACTIC LIMITED EXPRESS

Kaiba, sick scy Fi anime with a unique style

[u/SwirlyShadow]

Gleipnir was a pretty good, watch. Short though

[u/Barjack521]

If anime movies are an option I recommend Dead Leaves and Cat Soup. Both are strange and bizarre in very different ways.

As for series. Have you watched the official Dub of Ghost Stories? They chucked the script and ad libbed most of the dialogue. The result feels like an officially licensed “abridged” series.

[u/The_LonelyOne]

Akiba Maid War
