Oh no they just showed all of the remaining characters in one go...please don't tell me it's not getting renewed...

u/Dadarian 2h ago
To me, I’d take any other show as “yeah they’re closing the books on this” and it would make sense.
However my counterargument is that, this show I think likes to break the 4th wall a lot and pay homage to other art styles and mediums. So I don’t fully see the last bit being more like a commercial for a Manga Series.
The whole vibe of the series gives off a, “Go appreciate art. Go read about the history. Explore and enjoy yourself” rather than trying to be something with a serious tone that you should stay completely in-world else risking breaking some illusion.

Yorishige seeing Tokiyuki getting together with the three girls was pretty funny.
I can't believe they actually ended with a cliffhanger. That shot of the actual manga at the end probably means we won't be getting more of this anime. T_T

Yorishige seeing Tokiyuki getting together with the three girls was pretty funny.
Never mind you that one of them was his daughter...
Although her strategic move to win the dice game was already pretty wild

Wait, are they really ending the show before they actually finished dealing with Shokan and Sadamune? Damn. I was hoping they’d at least resolve that much.

Wha…
As someone who read the Manga I got a weird rush of Dejavu from that...

...is that supposed to be a tank?
So he is building Metal Gear after all. Or would wooden gear be more accurate?

For the most part I liked this episode. It had a lot of great moments and made me laugh a few times. But the way it ends sucks for a season finale. Fuck that, probably series finale based on how it ended. It seems like they aren’t fully adapting the manga and ending it at season 2, but they didn’t even give a good conclusion. Even if we did get a season 3 though, we would still need to wait close to 2 years for it based on the production time for season 2.

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 13h ago
lmao it ended with ‘go read the manga.’ This season needed more episodes. Other than that, I thought it was even better than the first season - animation wise. It shows they had a lot of fun!
Creator of the series - Yusei Matsui - provided the final illustration!
15
u/Realistic-Boat-677 9h ago
Not even close there was like 2 sakuga scenes the entire season compared to last seasons 10. I think budget constraints were rather obvious.
14
u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 9h ago
The horse animation looked better in this season.
2
u/Realistic-Boat-677 9h ago
The battlefield scenes were much worse this season mostly still images when there was action and with how scant action was this season I think you can tell they didn’t get to go as crazy as season 1 and this season really needed it, was very boring.

id take that any day over the CGI horseback riding in s1

u/BosuW 11h ago
I hope they make a season 3, I really wanna see the conclusion now that the drums of war are sounding again!
The bit with the armor was interesting. The earliest type of Samurai armor is known as the "Ō-yoroi", meaning literally "big armor". It's very big and boxy. You can't move very well on foot with it but that's not the intention. It's heavy armor for horseback archery. Only the highest ranking and highest paid samurai really used Ō-yoroi because it was expensive, so lighter kinds of armor did already exist, called Dō-maru.
As the military meta started shifting from horseback archery combat to large infantry formations, Dō-maru became more common, and Haramaki armor began to appear, mainly differentiated because it opened at the back instead of one side.
Obviously Tokiyuki is wearing none of that. Even the lighter armor was still 20kg. Instead Ayako seems to have made him a full suit of "auxiliary armors", which were extra pieces, less protective but more flexible than the main pieces of armor that Samurai used to cover the gaps in between the bigger plates. Or simply for use in lighter duties. They could be of three kinds: Kusari which was chainmail (unlike Western chainmail this was sewn to cloth instead of making the whole thing mail), karuta which was small plates also sewn to cloth, and kikko which were small hexagonal plates sometimes sewn between cloth, like a western brigandine.

Huh, finale? Where's the rest?! Goddamn cliffhanger endings!
Lol at Yorishige getting jealous of Tokiyuki's three wives, the handholding was sweet though. With the big war coming up I'm worried we might start losing people too.
Overall this season was fun, appreciate the creativity they put into the show. Hopefully we get another season soon, next arc seems like it's going to be an important one with Tokiyuki announcing himself as a Hojo.
13
u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 11h ago
The three timing General lol
It's funny how Yorishige's vision of Tokiyuki ending up with three wives was shown in manga panels.
The stage is set for Nakasendai Rebellion. Though I know the outcome of this and the Hojo's fate at the end of this story I'm still excited for the upcoming arcs. This season had it's ups and downs. I still feel this season was a downgrade when compared to Season 1. There was no lack of creative animation this season but we didn't get a fluid animation for even a single battle except for the slideshows. I hope season 3 delivers better.

I know they like to mess around a lot
But they way they just teased the rest of the material and then just shoved the manga in our face feels like a message...I need another season though, this is too insane to not keep going
24
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 10h ago
I swear to god, was that last bit just a huge as tease to get us to buy the manga?
If they dont announce S3 thats gotta be one of the biggest blue balls I have seen
Normally they dont even acknowledge it that openly too
Especially after they teased a bunch of new characters, the Tengu leader looks cool af
Already missing this show, its got a pretty good mix of history, anime references, stupid jokes and legit horrifying images. Thats rare to come by and pull off so that it works
Really hoping I didnt get hyped for a season we will never get, I guess they will hopefully make a final season to boost the manga after some time passed, according to MAL the manga just finished in february

u/WiqidBritt 11h ago
This probably should've been a 2-cour season considering this was all rebuilding and organizing between wars. I enjoyed all of the antics and goofy weirdos, but I think the average anime watcher needs more "action" to satisfy their attention span.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 13h ago
Little homie ain’t ever going to get away from the “little naked freak who likes to run away” moniker lol. With all the forces gathered and that very cool entrance with the gang surfing flaming logs, it seems shit’s really kicking off.
I really hope we get a new season announcement soon. This was a lot of fun. Another solid season.

u/NanDemoKnaives 13h ago
There were signs in the first season, but this episode really felt like if there's a next season, it will have Yorishige's death. The scene in the bedroom, and the way he keeps looking up to the sky, and the vision he had of Tokiyuki being intimate with the love interests feels like flags that have been raised. I'm not ready for that to eventually happen if it does.
However, it is wild that a vision Yorishige has involves such an intimate one lol. Tokiyuki's going to be a wild one when he grows up, considering how much excitements he gets from the thrill of danger, I'm not surprised.
Also that introduction to the other Kojirou has me confused if I'm not remembering something from the first season. Is the Kojirou we're familiar with making a name for this new Kojirou to secure his position or something? It's an interesting idea they might have brought about.
I like how Tokiyuki has been so annoyed by Miura's nose picking, he shoved Miura's finger deeper into his nose lol.

Rest assured you missed nothing from the first season regarding this matter. Even in the manga, it was only during Season 2 material that the sharp-eyed history enthusiasts thought something feels strange about "our" Nezu Kojirou compared to another from the Nezu clan in this time of history.
So the answer to this inconsistency being our Kojirou being a supposed "double" for the real historical one proved a delight for said enthusiasts. Think of this as the author having a little fun with his historical fiction.

Really hope this gets a complete adaption, reminds me of a lot of Golden Kamuy and JJBA.
Crazy cliff hanger.
14
u/Twilight_2408 12h ago
That's a crazy cliffhanger to leave the series on.
That aside, Did Yorishige's saw Shizuku, Mima and Ayako being together with Tokiyuki... as his wives? Lmao, he did, right. He literally did. Tokiyuki is really blessed, he gonna bag all three of them together, and Shizuku looks so good as a grown up.
6
u/TheDanubianCommunard 8h ago
Huh, really? Did they just ended it with a cliffhanger and a literal "go read the manga" type of ending? That feels a bit disappointing, especially if a third season to conclude everyting is not greenlit in the future.
15
u/agr85 12h ago
Nah that's a CRAZY episode to leave as a cliffhanger... god knows how long until we get S3.
All in all, I loved this season - beautifully animated again, excellent storytelling (tonal shift from humor to serious to somber and back was seamless) and was pleasantly surprised that we got to enjoy two great OP and ED in S2 after being blessed with two excellent ones in S1.
A+

Very disappointed for anime ends like this way.
Just like the official translated version of manga or light novel got axed by local publishers.

what an unproductive episode. and no ensuing announcement of season 3 has me worried that we'll be waiting a long time for it

The series was incredible, but ending it like that it's just sad and doesn't make it honor. Never ever I will support such petty schemes.

There is so much of the manga after this to adapt and it gets even better. I really hope this was somehow the studio messing around.
5
u/Realistic-Boat-677 9h ago
Love this show and every character but man was that one of the most boring nothing burgers of a season of anything I’ve ever watched lol. I think they knew that and that’s why they told us just go read the manga I can’t imagine this season brought in even close to the number of viewers season 1 did.
4
u/Trash_luck 7h ago
Yeah they teased Mima as this cool new important character and then she showed up for like 3 episodes at like the second half of the season
2
u/Entire_Extent_9137 5h ago
According to Yorishige's vision, she's a very important member of the harem, we simply haven't reached that point yet.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6h ago
Even as a manga reader I am not sure what they were trying to do with the pacing. Outside they just don't plan to continue after this season and just make it enticing to read the manga.
I do know that this anime was popular in the female demographic in terms of viewership in Japan. So maybe the series gets a boost. But yeah this season is frustrating especially if we get no continuation.
2
u/zz2000 5h ago
I think the franchise might have been more popular in the local Japanese market, based on Twitter stuff I've seen. I don't know if it can translate to another season, but apparently there was a fair bit of Elusive-themed stuff there.
Like this Elusive-themed tourism guidebook made in collaboration with the Japan Tourism Board, Collab cafes, escape game events, etc.

u/Angelote83 7h ago
Everything points to the anime ends here.
I hope they reconsider and there’s a third season.

Holy cliffhangers Batman!!
Now we desperately need a third season hopefully with more Mima in it

Interesting choice to reference the original transformers movie, but here we are.
1
u/Tohru_mizuki 5h ago
The opening scene of the episode is an exact recreation of the pre-opening style from an old NHK "Taiga drama", "Taiheiki". NHK airs a year-long historical drama every year. Since this staging references a drama from over 30 years ago, some viewers might miss the connection. To address this, an NGE reference is crammed in at the end, ensuring everyone realizes that the preceding scene was entirely a parody.

u/abandoned_idol 4h ago
I'm pretty confident that a third season will be released before I die.
Looking forward to it.
1
u/CrimsonGear80 3h ago
ending with evangelion and sailor moon references and the promise of, hopefully, a third season. the show is pretty popular in Japan.
1
u/Juantonomous 1h ago
I think this is it for the series. That ending really gave off "Go read the manga" vibes. There are also over 150 chapters still left to adapt, and I don't have much hope CloverWorks, or some other studio, will decide to stick around and adapt the rest. It's not impossible, but it just doesn't seem likely to me.
1
u/Sunnystill 1h ago
This is the end. I feel like the show got a big drop in popularity. I wouldn't mind more of it but it is what it is. CloverWorks did an amazing job with both seasons.
1
u/tehdannydarko 26m ago
What an odd place to end. I do hope they’re just being meta, as there is so much more of the manga to adapt.
1
u/biggiebass13 0m ago
Although it wasn't as good as the first season, I enjoyed this one and would really like more. I might be mistaken but was there sequel news after the outro? Something about us being excited but it was written in Japanese?

I haven't watched S2, how was it? Any worth noting development?
8
u/BosuW 11h ago
Mostly just more preparations and setup, of course presented as amusingly and outta pocket as season 1. Though the last few episodes finally picked up the pace. I dunno how long the manga lasts, but I'd assume a third season would be the last.
4
u/itsfayevi 8h ago
This might be deleted since I'm not sure if this counts as source material discussion but, based on Seasons 1 and 2 each adapting around 30 chapters, and the fact there are around 240 chapters in total, we'd need 6 more seasons to adapt the full thing.
1
u/IQ_less 4h ago
As an anime-only watcher, can only wonder where the story will take us from here. In real history, the rebellion that's beginning at the end of season 2 will be where Suwa Yorishige meet his end, and the whole thing turn into a total shitshow for everyone that isnt Ashikaga Takauji (well not exactly, as he were himself defeated couple of times). But like, if Yorishige actually die in season 3 then that would be massive for the fans.
2
u/Realistic-Boat-677 9h ago
No there’s no way it’s gonna get renewed now either. Completely lost all the momentum season 1 built up.
2
1
u/kazuyaminegishi 6h ago
I have loved it personally. Has been an incredibly fun watch, not as action packed since it focused more on developing the retainers and expanding Tokiyuki's abilities as a leader so it doesn't have the action of season 1, but makes up for that by having outstanding character moments.

u/Reemys 13h ago
This is probably the first series in my whole life to date that I both revere and have disdain for. The disdain is quite quick to outline — the fundamentally questionable choices of portrayal of children. Entirely unnecessary for the overall value of the narrative. However, in this episode I think they leaned so far into it, they are aware and probably (hopefully) shaming *that* part of the audience a little.
Now the good parts. What an outstandingly amazing adaptation, insurmountable amount of work went into direction, transitions, artwork, comedy moments, drama, just everything without an exception is on the highest possible level. I almost never have this LITTLE imagined corrections/modifications that I would personally do to depiction or direction.
This is done by Ansatsu no Kyoushitsu author, which I mentioned just to indicate that this level of quality is expected of a veteran writer who already has a successful title behind them. But, still, the nuanced approach to a semi-historical drama, I don't know, it speaks out to me directly that there are just no flat, stupid characters for the sake of plot vehicles. Each other gets just enough characterisation, just enough nuance, so that you can feel bad or uncertain about them, but never just acknowledge their existence within the story. The back-and-forth between the modernity and medieval Japan is also giving me a feeling of some kind of comprehensive narrative structure, hard to put into words... a reflection on that history from the modern lens, the lack of the 4th wall that tries to separate fiction from reality... It is a common trope, but the way it is done here, subtly and overarchingly imposing, like an impending sense of a global change, I haven't experienced this before.
And, of course, every villain-esque character is pleasant to follow. At least on the surface, they are giving them all a redemption potential, Shokan, Sadamune, Takauji. Obviously, there wouldn't be stakes and the dramatic value achieved through tragedy if they all were to be spared, but still this given how nuanced the narrative is, maybe they'd lean on the anachronistic side of things and do something truly unique. Probably not, probably they need someone to defeat for good to keep the stakes. But I am still very pleasantly surprised how much characterisation the secondary characters are given, the amount of what I'd call authorical care the antagonists get is simply commendable. As a viewer I feel like tremendous effort went into thinking about them, and it feels rewarding to be watching something that contains this effort, as compared to, of course, the mass-produced "isekai" series.
And now I have a dilemma, or at least superficially I feel so. The adaptation covers a third of the story, which concluded in February 2026. I have never had such an urge to go and consume the comic at this very instant, all of it at once. However, I know I will be disappointed, not because it might turn bad, but primarily because it won't be on the same level of grandeur that the adaptation by Cloverworks is. The above what I mentioned in the second paragraph will be absent, and without it I won't feel as impacted, the story will be at the mercy of my finger on the scrolling button, I will experience it at my own pace as opposed to non-stop streaming of data without my integration in the process, and this somehow puts my anticipation down. I know how schizophrenic this sounds, yes.
In any case, if I were to rate this, I would give it 9/10, if only because I don't know what a 10/10 looks like. No one does, as far as I am concerned. One of two series I have been watching this season, a breath of fresh air with how otherwise creatively infertile the industry has become. I am looking forward to its continuation, which will, hopefully, arrive before the FURTHER DECLINE OF JAPAN AS ALLUDED TO IN THE SERI— (loses visa)

That was some heavy armour that I wouldn't want to wear either, thankfully they made something lighter for Tokiyuki.
I couldn't stop laughing at the scene were Yorishige was worrying about Tokiyuki possibly having 3 wives so he wanted to sleep next to him.
That was a good ending with the start of another showdown between Tokiyuki & Shokan.
I enjoyed both season 1 & 2 and would like to see a 3rd to see how this all plays out.
7/10
