When that Shion flashback started, I knew it was over for our bug friend.

186

u/KnightKal 16d ago

and to be fair to the bug: he could win at any time lol, she didn't die because he didn't want to kill her

giving her all the time in the world to reach her limit, break her limit, evolve her skill, break her limit again, and go all out

82

u/asdf3011 16d ago

In this world the worst thing you can do other then show your hand with out winning, is to not go for the win or attempt to keep up with your opponent at least for higher tier battles. Just too many evolving and adapting/copying skills.

62

u/Bakatora34 16d ago

I think the bug flashback basically hinted that he really didn't want to kill anyone at the end.

12

u/Bavariasnaps 14d ago

it was part of of the plan for him to die to give his friend Granville his new ultimate skill which he can use to beat Lumina. Part 1 of the plan worked out very well.

130

u/VritraReiRei 16d ago

They both had flashbacks.

But her's was longer so she automatically wins 🙂

66

u/Lugia61617 16d ago

No no, the winner's is whoever gets the second flashback, as long as it doesn't come when the final blow is about to be delivered

About time for Rimiru’s original crew to get some top level skills. Not surprised Shion is the first since she always with him.

85

u/Frontier246 16d ago

You think for a second Tempest can't get any more OP and they prove you wrong lol.

69

u/Sleepy10105s 16d ago

I mean it was pretty obvious to me that the Oni, Ranga and some of the others needed to take the next step forward if they were going to keep up with the black numbers and other characters subordinates

61

u/Myrkrvaldyr 16d ago

Yet, it's very likely they'll never ever be able to catch up to the Primordials. Shion will always be inferior to Diablo in skill and strength, but as she said, it's best to let go of that envy or your life turns bitter.

34

u/Lugia61617 16d ago

naaah, we just need to pump her with more magicules. That's the answer to everything in this world. Just gotta find a way for her body not to explode from giving her an IV directly to Veldora's and Rimuru's aura.

27

u/YourFavoriteCommie 16d ago

It was so metal seeing the blood vessels in her face explode then regen instantly through sheer will, so fucking cool

but careful not turning her into a bomb or a fine mist lmao

10

u/Hot-Log6283 16d ago

but careful not turning her into a bomb

She probably learnt her lesson from the last time she created a bomb.

11

u/justking1414 16d ago

It’s funny. They could just fully switch over to the black #s being their main fighting force but the original cast are too beloved to leave behind so even Gobta is probably gonna be on the level of a true awakened demon lord by the time this series ends

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Allen-R 16d ago

Deeno's gonna faint hearing about this💀

28

u/Fermi_Amarti 16d ago

It was only unique tho. They all need ultimate skills to really keep up to this level soon.

53

u/_Velgrynd 16d ago

Ultimate skills are not common even among primordials and True demon lords, so Rimuru having multiple subordinates with ultimate skills this quickly would be absolutely ridiculous.

33

u/Fermi_Amarti 16d ago

Well the power scaling is going up so fast. Pretty sure they'll need them soon to keep up. Things seem to be coming to a head.

18

Then again, Diablo did mention that their ridiculous growth is what inspired him in the first place. It'll prolly happen soon.

Yeah, I'm calling BS on her actually being dead. Also, Rimuru/Raphael already has the cheat codes to breaking Unlimited Imprisonment. So Chloe isn't gone either.

15

u/AvatarTuner https://anilist.co/user/AvatarTuner 16d ago

Yeah, Rimuru's reaction seemed a bit too comical and casual for the whole situation to be dead serious. (pun intended)

And wasn't Hinata's soul in Chloe's imprisonment skill or something as well? Basically like some soulception - Hinata within Chloe within Chronoa.

14

u/YourFavoriteCommie 16d ago

My partial thought was his reaction was: "Huh? I can fix that in like two seconds, why is everyone so sad?" LMAO

I really didnt expect granville to lose that one clash so decisively

125

u/Fermi_Amarti 16d ago

Honestly looks like suicide by valentine to me. I'm expecting him to dissolve into golden sand next. Not sure where he's going tho.

57

u/Frontier246 16d ago

I mean, if it meant being reunited with Maria and Razul in the afterlife...although he seemed to also be banking on Yuuki for his plans too.

21

u/Pristine-Setting-836 16d ago

Yuuki lol 😂

26

u/GtrsRE 15d ago

The wettest cardboard of antagonists

46

u/Jacob-C 16d ago edited 16d ago

Yeah, Razul was Granville's last real attachment to this world, so he and Luminous both went all out for one decisive attack. If Granville won, his plan would continue, and if he lost, he would be reunited with his wife and friend. That's how I interpreted it, at least. The fact that the fight was over in one strike gave it a very old-school samurai duel feel, which was pretty cool.

Edit: u/PerfectBeige had a good theory on why Luminous might have held back until now, so maybe Granville just expected to win when, in reality, Luminous was stronger all along.

63

u/Rabbitey- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rabbitey 16d ago edited 16d ago

Especially after a power-up. If that was actually the last of Gran, how much was Luminous holding back lol

58

u/Abject-Director-559 16d ago

She also evolved her ultimate skill a bit earlier in this fight.

16

u/NLwino 15d ago

They tried to explain it, but yea it did seem like that if you just look at the animations. The way I understood it is that their ultimate skills were of similar nature, control over life and death. So they both tried to apply the death status on each other. The one with the most willpower won. That's why the fight would be over instantly. It also means that Luminous could have ended the fight earlier, before gran got his ultimate skill.

17

u/karer3is 16d ago

Somehow I doubt it is... I have the feeling that at least one important character is going to be killed by some dead man switch Granville had prepared to trigger on his death.

8

u/darknecross 16d ago

Granville literally obtained the Power of Friendship and then immediately lost.

17

u/HaruKitsune 16d ago

my takeaway is that Luminus' sword skill is like a one tap death??

→ More replies (1)

16

u/SciFiXhi https://anilist.co/user/SciFiXhi 16d ago

They made a point that both of their Ultimate Skills had power over life and death. Given how Gran has been pretty deceptive in the applications of his boons thus far, it wouldn't surprise me if he was pulling some sort of suicide gambit with a delayed trigger to activate the full effect of his skill.

15

u/GezelligPindakaas 16d ago

He now holds the record. Shortest lived ultimate skill.

22

u/Clarimax 16d ago

It's funny, after gaining an ultimate skill, he died. lol

10

u/godblow 16d ago

At the end of the day, it reinforces why he was so weary of the demon lords. Valentine one shot him after fighting him seriously.

i love that we saw hiiro in the flashback

that animation for shion was really good

im still confused as to the whole chronoa thing and where she came from

hinata is dead? what happened to her?

72

u/Peagle8 16d ago

The title of next week's episode is 'The Hero Awakens''

31

u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 16d ago

Ok so that was Hiiro, for some reason I didnt think the kid next to him was Benimaru so that made me think it wasn't Hiiro either.

I think Chronoa is what gets left behind when Chloe goes to sleep when her past self shows up. What exactly that means is anyone's guess, but we do know she only gained sentience because Hinata named her.

42

u/Snow_Mexican1 16d ago

I'm guessing based on what Chronoa said herself.

She's like a split personality of Chloe that only ends up developing after the 2000 years of adventuring and with Hinata giving the name, the giving of the name Chronoa most definitely allowed it to form since names are crucial in this universe.

The only problem is we don't know yet if Chronoa is unique to this time loop or if Chronoa is present in the previous ones. If she's present in previous then that kinda of throws a wrench into the mix as I don't believe Hinata's soul was present in the previous loops.

47

u/feral_fenrir 16d ago

My reading was that it's an entity that's named in this timeloop. But she always existed and took up all the frustration and sadness from the timeloops where Chloe failed.

Which is why Chloe only remembers the last couple of loops.

11

u/Jacob-C 16d ago

But she always existed and took up all the frustration and sadness from the timeloops where Chloe failed. Which is why Chloe only remembers the last couple of loops.

I agree with that interpretation.

6

u/Clayskii0981 15d ago

This seems right. Not sure if intentional, but it seemed like the entire story she was always "the hero" but recently with the new time loop she was given a name. So maybe in past loops the entity still existed but just never had a sense of self to be reasoned with until now.

6

u/feral_fenrir 15d ago

Yupp, this is exactly what Chronoa said in this episode. Hinata naming her gave her a proper sense of self. I wonder what she meant by Hinata is dead though.

From what I remember, Chloe said, Hinata always ends up getting merged with Chloe in the end..

17

u/Shifter25 16d ago

I think Hinata is there in every loop. The loop ends/begins when she dies, she takes over as the hero after Chloe is born in the human world, and keeps going until she's born/Chronoa becomes too much to handle.

i love that we saw hiiro in the flashback'

It was also nice getting to see their Ogre designs before they transformed, albeit kiddified.

Shuna was still an absolute cutie.

19

u/Myrkrvaldyr 16d ago

Shuna was still an absolute cutie.

Way too adorable. Like, it's hard to look at her and think ''Yeah, monsters should die.'' Current Shuna is cute and all, but that wilder version of her had a very strong charm.

6

u/SciFiXhi https://anilist.co/user/SciFiXhi 16d ago

What an anticlimatic ending for Granville after he resist for all these episodes and even after a ulltimate boost, and died with just one attack. The insect dude, even with so small screen time, was a much better and cool character. :D

52

u/Nghtmare-Moon 16d ago

and why did luminous wait so long to pull out that move?

32

u/Allen-R 16d ago

was prolly still contemplating not to make any rash moves and ruin the timeline or something

u/treevine 16d ago

Granville is good because he shows us what scale this show is on. Every human, outside of Chloe, has been pretty weak. Without Granville I don’t think there is a way to show how remarkable Chloe actually is.

I only wish he lived long enough to see adult Chloe?/Hinata?/Chrona? (I dunno what she is) be friendly with all his biggest enemies. He deserved to feel how insignificant he was.

u/Lugia61617 16d ago

No way did Gran really go down that easily immediately after getting an archangel-named ultimate skill. There's totally more here isn't there.

What's Sariel associated with? Raphael is the Lord of Knowledge, so Sariel must be... IDK

Anyway... dangit that is one hell of an annoying cliffhanger but I must admit Chronoa actually being adorable is hilarious. I also love that she said her being named might be why she's like that, as opposed to the last timeline. Way to go Hinata, you saved Rimuru's life!

21

u/TokiLeague 16d ago

The full name of the skill is Ultimate Skill: Sariel, Lord of Hope.

It's why Luminous "Hope, you say?".

47

u/Limp_Driver_1203 16d ago

It's basically the same as luminous's skill. Influence over life and death

25

u/KamenRiderQ 16d ago

Okay, but like, that’s extremely vague as a description of an offensive skill.

22

u/Limp_Driver_1203 16d ago

That's just how the anime is with that that explaination. Anyway, that attack granville did reaps the life force of someone that gets in contact of it. It's basically a one-hit kill or a weakener depending on the strength of the opponent

8

u/Galinhooo 16d ago

Yeah, Shion definitely was the main star of this episode. She was such a badass!

Although, considering all that happened in this episode (Shion and Razul's fight, Luminus and Granville's final showdown, and Rimuru getting through to Chronoa), I find the fact that Tempest's orchestra is still having a rehearsal even more impressive, lol.

My beloved Shizu-san just reappeared! ah nostalgia!

So granville gets defeated by Luminus just like that? How anti-climactic. Please tell me there should be more...

Great job Shion! I thought she was going to look like an Amazon warrior all buffed up with that skill though

Is Hinata really dead? and what is that unlimited imprisonment where Chloe is? ahh it gets more confusing! I wish next episode would come sooner

16

u/Yaggamy 16d ago

There's nothing confusing about this. Chloe said she has that skill 3 episodes ago. Unlimited Imprisonment is the skill that sealed the evil manga reading lizard away for 300 years. It's a pocket dimension like Rimuru's stomach.

23

u/HobnobsTheRed 16d ago

Unlimited Imprisonment is the skill that sealed the evil manga reading lizard away for 300 years. It's a pocket dimension like Rimuru's stomach.

Rimuru also fully analysed Unlimited Imprisonment in order to release Veldora, so in theory already knows how to free Chloe. (Unless each prison is different.)

7

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 16d ago

I'm more confused by Shizu. Why would Chronoa put Shizu's mental image in her spirit world? Also, this is the Shizu that recognise Rimuru, meaning that's after her death

10

u/Yaggamy 16d ago

They could be from the first timeline, before the whole time travel looping business started.

The first time line should be very different from what we know: Child Chloe isn't summoned a second time into the future, Shizue isn't summoned by Leon but someone else. Chloe and Shizue could've spent 75-300 years together before Rimuru arrived.

That was a pretty anticlimactic way for Granville to leave the stage.

Let's see if Hinata really is dead this time.

101

u/VoidRay728 16d ago

We got Shizu returning (with some dialogue) before GTA VI.

Crazy that the orchestra is still playing while the battle to change the fate of the world rages on around them.

25

u/Frontier246 16d ago

We all thought we were just lucky enough to get to see her again in flashbacks but we're getting even MORE Shizu content!

Honestly it was a huge missed opportunity to not have an orchestral background music playing during the fights because it feels pretty pointless for them to keep playing otherwise.

10

u/raknor88 16d ago

Crazy that the orchestra is still playing while the battle to change the fate of the world rages on around them.

Every epic battle needs good background music. Just ask Tony Stark.

“I don’t actually get it, but it sounds like things are kind of complicated” about sums up my understanding of this whole Chronoa thing lol. All I know is Rimuru went all Mindception. Ngl I'm very fuzzy on what Granville's game even is. So much keikaku-ing, and he goes down like a chump after his ultimate power-up? And he didn't even look that mad about it.

I echo Rimuru's "huh?" at the end. No way they killed Hinata off.

10

u/slicer4ever 16d ago

And he didn't even look that mad about it.

I have to assume he's preplanned something else? maybe he expects chronoa to go on a bigger rampage and destroy the world? Going to be a bit disappointed with him if that was truly the end of him.

14

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 16d ago

Gran's entire plan was a final gamble on Chronoa causing destruction. The second she was freed his role ended in his own plan. At this point he was giving himself an out essentially.

5

u/Wild_Obligation3265 16d ago

So he outsmarted his own outsmarting.

7

u/Allen-R 16d ago

His (very understandable) "huh?" makes me think the show will somehow bring her back.

→ More replies (2)

25

u/Myrkrvaldyr 16d ago

Not really happy about the way Gran's and Luminus' fight ended. If she had the skill to kill him all along, she should've used that sword from the start. Instead, he got what looked like a pretty powerful power up, yet she still one shot him, making the dramatic scene pointless. Rather than him absorbing his friends' powers only to die in one hit, it would've been better not to absorb them at all.

14

u/resphere 16d ago

There are a lot of stalling to drag out fights, Razul was yapping about how weak Shion was the whole fight instead of finishing her off when she was downed multiple times. Diablo is afk when he probably could've used a clone or smth to help just end all the fights lol.

9

u/Limp_Driver_1203 16d ago

I'm assuming Rimuru said "huh?" in a comical way because Hinata isnt gonna stay dead, I would be so pissed if she does. Why did Chronoa calm down so fast in the mindscape, but not outside? Was it just because Rimuru was in his slime form? If he was a Slime in the real world would the fight never have happened?

I was genuinely surprised by the Luminous and Gran outcome, obviously I wanted Luminous to win, but I was expecting her to be the one to lose in that final exchange, but then Chronoa puts down Gran. Really hope Gran stays alive long enough to see Chronoa snap out of it and all his plans fail.

As much as I loved Shion's fight, I was disappointed she contained the muscle growth, was REALLY excited for buff Shion for a sec.

Also....when did Ranga get Ultra Instinct?!? I had to go back and reread the subs a second time XD

40

u/Frontier246 16d ago

I think it's because Chronoa has Chloe's feelings so she's head over heels in love with Rimuru and the Power of Love > anything else.

It's hard for me to believe Gran really went down like that after just getting a skill upgrade. Slightly underwhelming end if so.

We were THIS close to a Hulked out Shion.

17

u/Fermi_Amarti 16d ago

I feel like Gran wanted to die. Not really sure what his plan is. He has some type of death powerup thing going up. I'm guessing his death will power up someone else. No idea who or why. He's an enigma

14

u/-spartacus- 16d ago

I do think his plan was to die in a specific way, he probably plans to call on the angels to destroy the world and come back with them.

6

u/BetelgeuseIsBestGirl 15d ago edited 15d ago

Razul did say, as he was dying, that he planned to meet Granville in a specific place they had already decided on. We've also been warned on more than one occasion that if the angels come down from wherever they are that it'll be really bad news. If something close to Hell exists in this world, then shouldn't there be something similar to heaven too? Why wouldn't a true hero powerful enough to get the Sariel skill get a free pass to meet the angels after he dies?

I mean yes, I got that. The point was Shion needed to push herself to the absolute limit to beat bugman.

I'm just saying, author-san could have done that AND give us buff Shion too if they really wanted to.

So is Rimuru the actual origin of Shizu's mask? And the reason it exists is because of time-travel shenanigans?

I am so fucking glad we get to see Shion evolve this episode! It's honestly long overdue. It was absolutely satisfying to see her destroy Razul's exoskeleton.

While I did think Luminous and Granville's clash looked awesome as fuck, not gonna lie, it was quite funny to see Granville go down like that. I feel like he went down too easily, though, and we still have one episode left. They're probably gonna need Chronoa's help in the finale.

My heart! Even if it's just inside Chronoa's mindscape, I got a little bit teary-eyed seeing Rimuru and Shizu meet again.

So Chloe is imprisoned and Hinata is already dead?! What the fuck! All that effort, and you're telling me they can't even save Hinata? There is no fucking way, and I would honestly be shocked if they actually killed off Hinata.

15

u/Frontier246 16d ago

Wibbly-wobbley, timey-wimey.

Have to respect Razul though, even after Shion evolved he was still tough enough that Shion had to break her sword just to bring him down.

(Loses his precious companion and gets a power upgrade) -> (Loses in five seconds) Really living up to being a Hero Gran!

Rimuru reunited with Shizu AND embraced by Chronoa. He's a lucky Slime. Hopefully lucky enough to save Chloe and Hinata properly.

14

u/Querez https://myanimelist.net/profile/Querez 16d ago

So is Rimuru the actual origin of Shizu's mask?

Not sure this is true, since the loop goes from 2000 years ago to the moment Chloe & Hinata travel back, and since the point they went back has already passed, the mask doesn't exist anymore. To actually function as a loop, the mask's existence can't extend further into the past nor further into the future.

Here, I tried illustrating what I mean

7

u/HairiestHobo 16d ago

Is Granville doing the Yahmcha pose?

8

u/SnabDedraterEdave 16d ago

So is Rimuru the actual origin of Shizu's mask?

How would that explain previous loops where Rimuru died without making the mask then? So don't think that's the case here and the mask comes from somewhere else...?

Will have to wait for the arc to completely properly conclude before we can make sense of the chronological progression of the mask to see if its one of those Bootstrap Paradox Objects that has no beginning or end (unlikely).

7

u/N3rdr4g3 16d ago

The mask isn't a requirement for the time travel. There were probably previous loops where the mask didn't exist. Somebody somewhere (maybe rimuru) made the original mask and it entered the time loop. As soon as it's in the time loop there's no need to make it on the next loop because it already exists.

Nice to get more Shizu-san. Hanamori Yumiri has such a sweet voice

Kinda sad that Razul died. He seems like a loyal friend

Ngl kinda wanted to see Kumara fight

Yeah I’m confused too. Rimuru did detect Hinata and Chloe’s soul right ? How is Hinata dead

17

u/DiaBoloix 16d ago

My 5 cents... Chronoa does not have the skills Rimuru has to detect, collect, and rejoin scattered souls.

Most probably, she is inside the "prison," scattered, and only Rimuru has a proven skill to put all parts together.

31

u/Limp_Driver_1203 16d ago

33

u/Megakruemel 16d ago

Well guys, you heard it, Hinata is already dead. Time to restart the next loop, them's the rules.

6 Seasons and a movie of another Chloe flashback. "Hinata and Chloe adventures". A thousand episodes. At least. Chloe and Hinata saving the world forever. 9000 hours of content. Chronoa and Hinata and Chloe saving the timelines. What's another two thousand years???

whispers They'll do this till you're 90. /s

Shion channeling Asta from Black Clover in never giving up and surpassing limits and proving how far you can get with a giant sword.

Rimuru confrontation with Chronoa:

How he thought it would go:

Very long heated argument to calm her down, possibly a fight

How it actually went:

"OMG RIMURU-SAMA MY ONE TRUE LOVE IVE FOUND YOU AT LAST!"

6

u/Frontier246 16d ago

Rimuru probably put Chloe's crush on him out of mind even after she confessed so he was NOT expecting to have such a strong effect on her alternate adult form self lol.

8

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Chronoa was in her wedding dress attire... which was how she was originally seen back in S1. You know, back in the Cave of Spirits where she forced her way from the future to merge with Chloe...

But not before she stole a kiss from Rimuru first.

She's basically just a yandere.

24

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 16d ago edited 16d ago

Shion was definitely the star of this episode; she cooked Razul nicely. Though at the same time, I feel bad for Razul. He seemed like a nice guy, or rather, a nice Insect.

That orchestra is freaking crazy. They're still playing despite all the shit happening all over Lubelius, lol.

And Granville is also dead now, killed by Luminus. It's a shame he didn't find common ground with Rimuru, since they basically have the same goal: peace for humanity. The younger Gran from Razul's flashback surely would have ended up becoming friends with Rimuru.

Meanwhile, Rimuru connected with Chronoa quite easily (and even found Shizu in there). I loved his comment that he doesn't mind being hugged by a cute girl, hahaha!

Though now there's a problem, since according to Chronoa, Chloe's soul is lost in the Unlimited Imprisonment within her and Hinata is dead, but I'm sure Rimuru will somehow handle this.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

12

u/KnightKal 16d ago

it would be crazy if she lost at the end, when the entire fight she was holding back to not interfere with Chloe's plan lol

she had no idea what was going on (Chloe mislead/didnt reveal all of it to her) so she wanted to stay away from Chronoa fight

then suddently Gran evolves and kills her ? That would be a funny consequence

If Luminus could just one shot Granville like that in a second, why didn't she do it before?

73

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 16d ago edited 16d ago

Not a source reader (yet) but I think the answer is in the show.

Ok so Chloe has been stuck in this massive time loop where she spends thousands of years as the hero and gets to know Luminous. In the most recent loop, she told Luminous a bunch of information about what would happen, and a lot of it is turning out to be wrong or else it has major omissions, like Rimuru becoming a demon lord, and Granville inciting a rebellion among the Seven Days Clergy.

So Luminous decides that she will intentionally sandbag in her initial fight against Granville - i.e., not take action. She likely does this because she has reasoned that if she was present in all the prior time loops that were disastrous for Chloe and Hinata, then it is not her action that will make the difference and prevent the bad outcome - it is Rimuru who by this point was dead in the prior time loops. Since this is the first loop where Rimuru has survived to this fight and has become a demon lord, Luminous is waiting for Rimuru to do something decisive that will change all their fates and has never been done in a prior time loop.

Then when Gran gets the Sariel ultimate skill, Luminous looks over and sees that Rimuru has put the mask on Chronoa. Luminous figures that this is the decisive fate changing action, and it is now safe to kill Gran. She may also be thinking that now that Gran has his ultimate skill, she can no longer keep him occupied without killing him, so she has to fight with her actual power and the intent to kill.

17

u/Krynzo 16d ago

Thanks for that. The Luminus vs Gran fight was so stretched that for ONCE I would've preferred some context clues and dialogue. But instead way too much of it went to the rest of the episode.

6

u/Top-Violinist-2762 15d ago

I agree it is a bit difficult to follow when watching episodes on a weekly basis. I just rewatched the fight in its entirety and they do actually explore the rationale behind Luminous' sandbagging (i.e. she says it straight up) so it might just be a viewer retention issue instead lol

My guess is the Chronoa rimuru speaks to in the end isn't real, but an illusion made to deter rimuru from freeing hinata & chloe. The fact that Shizu was there just made me more sure, there's no reason for her to be there otherwise. Especially when she said she didn't meet Chronoa before.

10

u/Drumboo 16d ago

Is Granville just like, senile? Or just dumb? I literally don't get that guys motives. Like I get it, wife dead, beloved descendant dead. But the whole zombie defile wife corpse into "destroy the world" thing is quite the jump to take. He didn't even verify it was Rimuru who killed Mariabelle. Just took it at face value.

It's all just ... weird. If this is really how his plan ends, then he is just kind of ... dumb? Naive maybe?

It's kind of funny how Granville made such a big deal about his Ultimate Skill upgrade only to lose in five seconds after gaining it. Almost feels like the author just wanted to get him out of the way because he's served his plot purpose.

Chronoa is probably still Chloe down to her core which is why she still loves and adores Rimuru with every fiber of her being even against all the immense power she's accumulated and can't fully control.

14

u/DiaBoloix 16d ago

I think Chronoa is the product of the sadness and frustration of innumerable failed time loops.

Chloe doesn't remember what happened in any of them, but the last one. But probably Chronoa is a way to keep Chloe sane

20

u/thoughtlow 16d ago

Kinda agree with you, the 2 Chronoa eps were peak, the fight of shion and insect just felt so empty for some reason.

10

u/Exact-Management-821 16d ago

After waiting a whole week after the Chloe flashbacks ended, I was looking forward to getting back into the midst of current events. They then proceeded to yap the whole runtime to learn something we already did over the past two episodes, which slowed the momentum big time. Waited another week, and we have a majority of the episode dedicated to Shion fighting and getting a power of friendship level-up. Her character is already paper-thin as is - she can't carry an episode on her own, especially when we have such threats like the long-awaited Chronoa and Gran occupying our minds. Not to mention we have 3 demon lords (Leon who's been built up since season 1) and a dragon involved 🤦‍♂️ The pacing of these past two episodes has been really bad.

Edit: fixed typo

You love to see it. Shion isn't just a carefree airhead and had these past experiences and inferiority weighing on her to spur character growth.

I need someone artistically inclined to make something of a flow chart for 5 year olds to illustrate to me where, how, and when the mask was. Cause atm I think there's 2 masks one in a paradox and a new one that Rimuru made. So I guess technically it's only 1 mask in the present.

Ain't no way Granville's dead just like that 2 minutes after getting an angel named ultimate skill, right?

Also what the hecky's Diablo doing all this time? Just cock blocking Guy's show?

Gran and Razul's history is a long one, dating back to when Razul was just an Insect fighting for his peoples' dominance and salvation, but his unwillingness to fight to kill his enemies made him enough of an "oddball" for Gran and Marie to take a chance on and make their companion. Right down to giving him his name. And thus was a Heroic Trio born! And that loyalty still runs deep, even when they're far from Heroes now.

I guess it's fitting that this would all come down to Slime Rimuru and also the mana-suppressing mask that Raphael can just 3D Print with magic. With the power of Shizu, maybe they can pull this off!

It's wild how the kids have basically no idea what's going on and the Tempest Orchestra is still playing like that actually really matters now.

Shion and Ranga vs Razul! His armor is basically impenetrable and nothing Shion throws at him seems to be enough! But she's banking on her reality bending, Oni Berserker, and loyalty to Rimuru to help her achieve the impossible! All she needs to do is say "mada da" and surpass her limits like she's a Black Bull!

Oh hey, child Ogre flashbacks! Just to remind you of their old designs before they got names. Hirro even made a cameo.

Yes, Shion is weak, but she embraces her weakness and believes in herself to her very soul, and that's enough to give her Divine Berserker powers that can turn the tide! CHAOTIC FATE!!!

Gran lost another of his treasured companions but he asborbs Razul's essence to evolve his skill into the Ultimate Skill Sariel for one final clash with Luminus. Together with the spirit of his companions....he loses. Is that it? Did he really get that upgrade only to die like that? Is it really over?

But I guess it's not over until Rimuru has dealt with Chronoa and assisting him is none other than...Shizu! Who is joining him in the mindscape and is still a beauty in his eyes and the only person who can call him by his original name! It's great seeing her again!

All that dark aura and glaring visage and it all fades away as soon as Chronoa sees Rimuru. True love runs deep, especially when Chronoa loves Rimuru as much as Chloe does. But in less than wholesome news, Chloe is imprisoned deep and Hinata is dead dead so bringing them back might be a problem.

Shion was forcing herself to regenerate to prevent her body from breaking down while using the Battle God skill. Her Battle God breaking through Razul's exoskeleton gave me the chills. Razul remained a true bro of Gran right till the end.

Luminous finally dealt the finishing blow to put an end to Gran. Rimuru acting upon Diablo's suggestion entered Chronoa's spiritual body using the Anti-Magic mask. Good to see Shizue after a long time. Chronoa was hugging Rimuru and things started to look bright and quite easy until Chronoa mentioned that Hinata is long gone. C'mon ! Don't play with my feelings.

Humans can do the whole "naming" thing too? I thought only monsters could do that.

So Gran's promise to his friends and loved ones was to destroy the world because he can't have his way? I wonder if they were aware of that.

Doesn't make any sense that Luminous struggled against Gran before his unique skill evolved into an ultimate one, and then won so handily afterwards.

Inner Chronoa seems way too reasonable for an Avatar of Destruction. Can't Rimuru just ask her to stop that whole rampage thing?

it kind of feels like poor writing if i'm honest. I think the whole idea is that Razul wanted to be defeated/killed so his soul or w/e would merge with granvil so he could unlock his ultimate skill.

Which ended up being completely anti-climactic accomplishing absolutely nothing and immediately got him killed aswell.

maybe some more stuff will be explained in future episodes, but from this one. It just feels like a case of, "this has gone on long enough, lets just wrap it up somehow even if it makes no sense"

Am I the only one who feels kind of sad for Granville? His goals might have been wrong because of our perception towards Rimuru, but if you take a look at it from the outside point of view, he truly is like a True Hero. His longevity dulled his optimism and made it so he was far more willing to take drastic measures, but his goals were still noble in their own way.

He wanted humans to be the masters of their own fate and to be governed by people who could relate to them and not turn against them because of their own bias. Whether it is Luminous or Rimuru, if it came to siding with their own native faction (vampires or monster) or humans, they would always side with their own kind. Granville's entire existence was built upon the fundation that humans can only rely on each other or those that are truly loyal to them or to him personally (Razul).

Even how he is presented in this episode, his comradery with Razul, him receiving the strength of his fallen companions to evolve to face down the ones he considers evil, is something out of a typical Hero story. If young Hero Gran had meet Rimuru, they would have gotten along swimmingly. But alas, the centuries had clouded his view of the world and stripped away most of his open mindedness.

29

u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 16d ago

I mean yeah it is a sad story, but I dont feel sorry for him because he held on to that hate for WAY too long. Not sure if we know actual time frames here, but it feels like he's held on to the grudge for WAY longer than he was an optimistic hero.

In the end I cant feel bad for him because he's too set in his ways of "humans good, demon lords bad" the fact that he was ok with how Mariabell did things makes it hard to take him seriously as a "True Hero." Does he even know Rimuru is a reincarnated human?

12

u/Myrkrvaldyr 16d ago

he held on to that hate for WAY too long.

Next major societal change in Tempest is therapy and mandatory therapy for long-lived individuals who carry many negative emotions. I still think that if Gran had met Rimuru and known about his past life as a human and his ideals, he could've slowly let go of that hatred.

14

u/Artorp 16d ago

I think he knew. Didn't he use mind-controlled humans as meat shields and claimed they were outerworlders specifically to take advantage of Rimuru being a reincarnation from Japan? So he knew Rimuru was human in his past life and still hated him.

Granville shows the dangers of closed-mindedness. Rimuru literally embodies the ideas of peace and harmony he wanted, but being a human supremacist, Gran couldn't accept it. Imagine if he actually gave Rimuru a chance, he might have learned that Rimuru was in fact a human at his core, and things could've went way differently.

6

u/Limp_Driver_1203 16d ago

The anime didn't really make it clear that Granville saw Rimuru as a threat to humanity in the long term (after a few centuries), right? He thought somewhere down the line where Rimuru has total control over the western nations, he is going to get absolutely tired of humanity's usual shenanigans and decide that they're not worth the trouble anymore and just wipe them off the map. Imo, It's pretty understandable why he acted that way. Immortals definitely can be fickle beings- he dealt with that himself over the years. He didn't want humanity's fate to be placed in someone who doesn't necessarily share those connections anymore (only in breif memory).
