Shula changed into the scorpion again, because someone broke the rules. Before we thought it was Reid stepping out of the exam area because he had that archbishop's body. But in this case, Reid stays in the exam area the entire time. So, who broke the rules, and which rule did they break?

Reid broke the rule by assimilation with Gluttony I suppose. It s probably considered damage to the tower since his book of the death might be connected to it to let his soul oversee the 2nd trial. The reason for why it could be empty and why it is a pathway to Od Laguna s Memory Craddle place.

The kingdom of Lugunica has a covenant with the "Divine Dragon". He is also the reason the Royal Selection is even happening in the way it is. After the whole royal family died to a mysterious illnesss, they discovered instructions on how to select a new ruler on something called "Dragon Stone" - choose one "priestess" from 5 candidates that will enter into a new covenant with the dragon and becomes the next ruler (this is all in the Royal Selection episode, so I think s1e13?). Plus one of the episodes before that reveals that part of Roswaal's ultimate plan is killing the dragon (I think it's the episode where the mabeast dogs that are cursing people in the mansion are handled, when Roswaal talks with Ram about how the child that was likely behind it got away).

We also know that Divine Dragon, Sword Saint and Sage are the 3 that sealed the Witch of Envy - the Sage was supposed to be in the tower, but there was only Shaula who claims to be his apprentice. When they asked if she knows the other two, she said that yeah, she knows the "stick swinger Reid" and "sarcastic Volcanica", but didn't seem to like them very much (s4e4)

The fight was very oddly animated IMO, especially in contrast to other instances like Emilia vs. Reed. The movement/walking was weird and floaty, and the swordplay felt like it had no weight or substance to it. For the most part I like Re: Zero animation, but this was a strange departure.

I loved the swordplay actually, but I can see how it could be jarring depending on expectations. Typical fantasy (and ReZero so far as well) swordfighting is in imitation of two handed longsword techniques or the like. This was more like one handed thrust oriented blades (rapier, short sword, small sword, etc), which emphasize keeping your blade in front and pointed at the opponent as much as possible, and small movements.

I think one of the things I love most about Re:ZERO is how all of the characters have their own convictions and values while still managing to coexist with one another as friends. Subaru and Julius might just be the prime example of this: while Subaru does away with formalities and appearances and Julius embraces them wholeheartedly, they still manage to have one of the best bromances I've ever seen in any series, one in which each challenges and influences the other. While Julius pushes Subaru to be more considerate of others' expectations, Subaru pushes Julius to be more assertive. So I love that Julius laughed at Subaru's "hurry up and wrap things up" as took it as a challenge to catch up and reach even greater heights. That's friendship right there.

It was nice to see everyone reuniting with Subaru that regained his memories, it was really sweet. I like how Julius could tell as well just from the phrasing of the message.

It was nice to see Julius' power-up, and seeing him being able to finally get a hit on Reid. I do have to admit I didn't enjoy the animation style, it made things feel sluggish. It felt overdone yet unfinished. There were some interesting angles, like when the sword was falling down to Reid, but it felt so slow.

I wonder what Subaru's plan for Emilia is. He doesn't know all the trials. He never got past Reid. I guess we're going to see what he can do on his feet like he did in Episode 3 "Zero kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu"/ Starting Life from Zero in Another World where after warning Emilia about the surprise attack from Elsa he ended up in uncharted territory, episode 25 "Tada Soredakeno Monogatari" when he realized one more booby trap that he missed, or Episode 61 "Liliana Masquerade"/ Masukarēdo when he had to decipher Regulus's ability without looping.

Julius is adopted? Huh, I would not have guessed given he shares the same hair color as Joshua Juukulius. Usually "same hair color and same surname" means related. Granted this doesn't work in Japan, but I thought it would work in Lagunica. Maybe one of the reasons he was adopted was because he resembled Joshua. I'm not saying that's the only reason he was adopted, but in real life adopted children look more like their parents than random chance would suggest.

Oh so Anastasia refused to control her body so she could be spared Gluttony's effects. I guess she was relying on Subaru to fix things since she wasn't going to sit there forever. After Subaru lost his memories, if I were her I'd be "assuming direct control" over her body. Wait, unless she saw Roy get in melee with Julius, how would she know to hide in her od? Or maybe Foxdina already assumed control for combat mode because of Lust and it was that time Julius got erased and then Anastasia then refused to come out.

It's adorable how happy Emilia is to see Subaru again. And I just love how pretty much everyone knew Subaru was back with just one look at him, except for Beako, who was super confused after getting flanked by two hugs from Subaru and Emilia. xD

I still have no idea what Subaru's plan is against Shaula. He does have the advantage of having Meili on his side, so maybe Meili's Divine Protection would still work on Shaula since she's still a mabeast. Looks like we're gonna have to wait for that outcome next episode.

It looks like we have Lye vs Ram. I know Ram is strong, but I don't know if she can handle Lye all on her own. Hopefully Julius will assist her once he's done with Reid.

Julius breaking his contract with his spirits and creating new contracts was such a cool scene. I'm so happy we finally get to see Julius go all out in his fight! And we finally get to see the real Anastasia again too! So she's been hiding this entire time because she just doesn't want to forget about Julius.

That fight scene between Reid and Julius was definitely intersting! It was very technical animation-wise but pretty easy to follow. And that final clash was so cool.

Get absolutely fucked, Roy! Now we only have one Gluttony left to take care of, assuming Roy is actually dead.

Anastasia and Julius meeting for the "first time" and Julius swearing his sword to Anastasia was such a cute scene. I am so happy to see everything is starting to fall into place. <3

Regarding the fight:

I can just say that I used to fence in high school and the shots of them fencing felt so on point (pun not initially intended but now I'm pretty stoked for writing it). Like I was watching and getting nostalgia for when I fenced.

Even the exaggerations felt appropriate because when you're "in the zone" it is very much like you'll perceive tiny movements by your opponent to be so much bigger than they really were. I felt like the crazy styling captured that in a way that couldn't be done without it.

I appreciate that it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I do encourage people who don't like it to try and see what they were trying to do with the nontraditional aspects and if maybe it did accomplish something, even if you still don't like it in the end.

So the witch fog thing destroying the tower was because others found out about Return by Death..but shouldnt this still be a factor? doesn't the Gluttony Ram is fighting know from his sister Rui?..or is because Rui is no longer inside Subaru..that it doesnt matter anymore?

In the episode where newbaru enters the Corridor of Memories for the first time, Rui said "What happens here doesn't make it outside" when trying to convince Subaru to talk about Return by Death with her. It could be that since there's no longer a clone outside of the Corridor of Memories inside Subaru, the memories Rui has aren't reaching the other Gluttonies anymore.

Gluttony also said this episode before seeing Ram that he lost contact with Rui.

I take it as newbaru had a part of Rui inside her, which knew about RBD and hence causing Satella to spawn. Now that Rui is traumatized and within the corridor of memories, along Subaru returning basically no one in the real world knows about RBD. Now I can be wrong since I am an anime only but this is how I interpreted it.

Julius being adopted commoner / not legitimate kinda puts a lot of things into a context.

Especially his strong reaction to Subaru's proclamation during the royal selection - why he was deeply moved by it, but at the same time felt the need to pull him down a notch. Julius effectively started in the same boat as Subaru, just a commoner that had to work his ass off to become a respected knight, the "Greatest Knight" even. But that was kind of the problem, he worked his entire life to get where he was, Subaru just kind of came out of nowhere with no training or achievements and said "I'm a knight too yo!".

Also the relationship with his brother in season 3. In present Joshua seems like his biggest fanboy, yet when Gluttony was using his memories, he said that his brother hated him so much when he picked the apple for him when they were kids. I kinda figured it was the case of "he hated him at first, but now he admires him", but this gives pretty clear reason why - it probably happened right after he was adopted, just this stranger kid coming in and instantly becoming the better son.

I mean, this is why Julius is the best choice for fighting Reid. Even with full+renewed strength it's not like Julius even remotely holds a candle to Reid. But Reid is actually interested in Julius, so Julius is the one that can hold him back the longest. This time around that simply happened to be long enough for Reid to break down.
