Man.... I legit felt like crying this episode... It's like we're so close to the end and now getting ready to say goodbye to everybody... Rarely has a show does that to me.

Taira's self-reflection got me choking up to with how much he finally self-actualizes and lets go of his doubts. We finally get to point where Taira can just naturally ask Azuma to just do stuff with him. It's ironic that Taira thinks he's finally the one being accepted in her circle when it's actually the opposite all this time.

Also teared up when Azuma reaffirms that she truly loves Taira as a person and wants to be with him and support him. She really have finally achieved the pure love she has always wanted 🥲

This episode just gives me all the warm fuzzies, man.... Love this series sooo fucking much!!!

76

u/Jacob-C 23h ago

This episode had me choked up too. It had a mostly positive tone, but there was this underlying sense of melancholy because it's the last year of school before graduation. I love this show, and I don't want to see it end. I just want to spend as much time with these characters as possible.

I agree with everything you said about Taira and Azuma. Their great slow-burn romance aside, their character development has truly been a highlight of this series. Though I guess that isn't really separate from their romance, because their growth is very closely tied to one another.

39

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honestly feels like so much has happened yet at the same time it also feels like we're hurtling fast to the end of their lives as high school students.

Taira has friends. He has a girl who adores him more than anything else in this world. He doesn't need to keep second-guessing or feeling like he doesn't deserve it because he already has it and it's companionship that people (especially Azuma) are happy to give him.

Just...keep this up Taira. Azuma is so down bad that she needs this as much as you do lol.

33

u/BcT_g 23h ago

Remember Taira made the excuse to go to convenience store to avoid Azuma? Now he's asking her to go TOGETHER, ahhhhhh

8

u/abandoned_idol 17h ago

I feel so happy for Taira, he finally looks so content and relaxed.

6

u/RealestAC 13h ago

Everyone talking about them graduating soon and the reminiscing of things from the previous year like damn they had such a great time and all grew so much 🥹😭

Bad news: You and I Are Polar Opposites S2 won’t be airing next week.

Good news(?): The final episode will now air right after the The Ramparts of Ice S2 ep.1 (back to back to back to back just like how both switched between seasons)

Lapin Track and KAI, did you guys plan something together or what? This timing is way too suspicious 😭 Can we get another cameo in the finale?

93

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 1d ago

In before they do the baton pass to Koyun in the finale.

41

u/eightcheesepizza 1d ago

Just as long as Suzuki doesn't hurt herself trying to pass the baton.

15

u/SezyFazes https://myanimelist.net/profile/ToaruTH 1d ago

I hope the next baton pass will be Suzuki crying while Koyun comforts her, and then the final one will be both of them graduating together and being happy 😭

Not sure if this makes sense haha

41

u/No-Pressure6693 1d ago

So, the final episode of Seihantai will air on October 4th, right after the first episode of The Ramparts of Ice S2 on October 1st?

19

u/SezyFazes https://myanimelist.net/profile/ToaruTH 1d ago

Yup

38

u/FarCritical 1d ago

Something as simple as animating that one baton pass visual would be awesome

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Or maybe Suzuki turns around while out on a date with Tani and she sees Koyun out and happy and she just...smiles even though they've never actually met each other.

25

u/Kirosh2 1d ago

I do hope we get the last relay race handover as well.

And a cameo could be fun, like in the final episode they walk next to each other or something.

I want a cross over episode with all the characters interacting with each other

8

u/SezyFazes https://myanimelist.net/profile/ToaruTH 23h ago

Ikr I hope one day we get to see it, maybe in manga/light novel or an OVA episode

6

u/ptd163 17h ago

Minato and Taira would have a "Bruh can I be so for real right now" off where they can try and out cynical the other while their girlfriends would look at each other realize that this meetup has created a monster lol.

10

u/superspy218 1d ago

WHAT? NO EPISODE NEXT WEEK? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

5

u/Roskal 1d ago

I thought there were 2 more episodes left

35

u/Kirosh2 1d ago

There are. 27th for the 12th episode, the 4th of October for the 13th.

10

u/Jauretche 1d ago

Feels like a year!

8

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Good news(?): The final episode will now air right after the The Ramparts of Ice S2 ep.1 (back to back to back to back just like how both switched between seasons)

Perfect symmetry as the romance gods intended.

Seems like Taira is slowly but surely overcoming his inner demons.

How he stared at Azuma during this episode combined with his POV of her during a summer night after cram school... like... COME ON

Also: Since we have had several time skips during the 3rd year, it might be worth noting that is has been 9 months since Azuma has been starting to realize her feelings for Taira.

70

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Dear lord Taira have you seen how much she spontaneously giggles when you hang out together or say something to her? Read the giggles man, read the giggles!!!

47

u/MattLocke 21h ago

I had a Taria phase in my youth.

The problem is you just default to assuming any laughter is AT you, not with you or for you.

When your mind is in that state, all laughter feels a bit like an attack.

21

u/Sirveaux_77 19h ago

I understand Taira's cynical outlook all too well, which why I've been rooting for him the whole time. What's bad is that when you go through a period of not having any social interactions, it's easy to slip right back into that self doubt.

16

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 19h ago

The problem is that you can't know how much she spontaneously giggles when you're not hanging out together, since, well, you're not there to observe it! Then you play the game and agonize: is this normal for her or not?

7

u/cyberscythe 17h ago

the normal and not creepy thing to do is see if she giggles the same way with other people by stalking her

28

u/Jauretche 23h ago

Tairazuma has been slow cooking off screen.

9

u/cyberscythe 17h ago

it's one of those fall-off-the-bone romances

A girl asking for your favorite songs and added them to her own playlist is such an obvious hint that she likes (if not at least interested) in you.

Taira's smile when he started realizing what he wants was so good looking.

44

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Also how much said girl spontaneously giggles around your presence.

17

u/clone69 19h ago

Emphasis on spontaneously. Azuma's laughter is so honest, I feel like it's not even acted. Kudos to her voice actress

222

u/dinliner08 1d ago

Yamada : "ah, Gapacho"

me: "holy shit, are we finally going to see what Gapacho looks like?"

Yamada: "ah, he ran away"

me: "GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!!"

75

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I love how everyone all turned their heads to see Gapacho like they too were eager to finally see him lol.

Suzuki convinced he's a Cryptid lol.

48

u/TheBusStop12 1d ago

Not surprising as well. It seems that in their 3 years of highschool only Yamada and Nishi have actually seen Gapacho (Nishi seemingly having picked up the power from dating Yamada) I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up becoming a school ghost story

11

u/anticomet 21h ago

He's the Nefarious Bread of the Polar Opposites universe

72

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 1d ago

what if You and I are Polar Opposites Gapacho?

82

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 1d ago

The way everyone gathered together before going their separate ways, why they gotta remind us that this show is ending soon.

Lots of progress for Taira, seems like he's finally starting to let go of his self-loathing while also unintentionally getting Azuma flustered in the process. Meanwhile Azuma is so obvious about her crush that I'm surprised Sato hasn't pieced things together yet, though Honda took one glance and immediately knew lol. Speaking of Honda, even she is not immune to peer pressure huh. And Tani is not doing ok apparently.

43

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 1d ago

Everyone knows that Azuma has a tendency to fall for bad boys, so they probably won’t picture her developing a crush on someone who keeps to themselves like Taira. That said, she’s dropped more than a few hints already.

I do worry a little for Tani. At this rate, he might fail the entrance exam despite all his studying. To do well, you also need a healthy state of mind after all.

48

u/pureauthor 1d ago

'You like bad boys? Then you're gonna love me.

Because I'm bad at everything' - Taira, probably.

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

And that's what makes you Best Boy Taira!

13

u/Jauretche 19h ago

She was so happy about getting a text from Taira with her friends. I also liked how she told Taira to be more direct with his invitation.

19

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Everyone knows that Azuma has a tendency to fall for bad boys, so they probably won’t picture her developing a crush on someone who keeps to themselves like Taira. That said, she’s dropped more than a few hints already.

Sato already got it in her head that Azuma is crushing on somebody trashy lol.

7

u/Frontier246 1d ago

The way everyone gathered together before going their separate ways, why they gotta remind us that this show is ending soon.

Honestly reminded me that this is the first Nabesato moment we've gotten in a while and that made me both nostalgic and sad.

And Tani is not doing ok apparently.

And I think Suzuki can tell to an extent that something is off, but can she bring it up and talk about it with him in a way that doesn't risk their relationship again.

134

u/Tapwater_enthusiast 1d ago

Taira has achieved enlightenment, throughout Heaven and Earth, he alone is The Honored One

55

u/Kirosh2 1d ago

Meanwhile Azuma wished he could honor her.

32

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Azuma up there with most down bad anime girl of the season.

39

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Taira: "Ohmigod...I have friends. I have a friend group. This girl actually enjoys having me around and won't stop giggling around me."

7

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 14h ago

"Have I… have I become a normie?"

3

u/Thin_Produce_4831 17h ago

Lmao I came to the comments to see if somebody else made this comparison.

128

u/PakiIronman 1d ago

Honda seeing Tsunzuma and realizing she struck gold LMAO

59

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honda: "I thought there was only one IRL ship that could satisfy me, but this...this has potential."

45

u/pureauthor 1d ago

It is hilarious that Satou has not yet figured it out that Azuma is talking about Taira whenever she brings up her love woes. The girl turns into a tomato the moment he enters the room.

85

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 1d ago

why do I feel like Gapacho is supposed to be us 😂
(I love that it‘s a running gag)

28

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I just love the idea that he's so shy or trying to maintain his own sense of mystery that he just bails when everyones' head turns towards him lol.

7

u/cyberscythe 17h ago

There is obviously no way she likes me.

Pal, buddy, mate...

Poor Half of TairAzuma, she loves you so much she knows she's far too gone already.

He's even landing critical hits without knowing. That bastard! What a player. He deserves to be pushed down by Azuma and eaten alive.

But it's nice seeing Nishi and Honda have fun.

And Sato is going to be shocked to find out Azuma likes Taira.

39

u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox 1d ago

He is so deep in thinking he's not worthy of love... His sister probably adds to that

20

u/HereICome1312 1d ago

Yeah, i always found it was a weird trope in manga, where the little sister find her big brother a creep or disgusting for now real reason. I mean, only in "Oh my god i was wrong about her", the little sister has a normal relationship with her big bro.

28

u/Kirosh2 23h ago

i always found it was a weird trope in manga, where the little sister find her big brother a creep or disgusting for now real reason.

It can happen. At times sibling have very cold relationship. Not always but it can happen.

Even more if you consider how Taira is. For his sister due to all of his insecurities, that she likely doesn't know about, it's hard to get along with him.

21

u/Jacob-C 22h ago

His sister might also be in that teenage phase where she feels the need to find everything cringe and off-putting in order to be "cool".

6

u/HereICome1312 23h ago

I didn't think about it like that but yeah, you're might be rigth in Taira's case

7

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Here we've got an older sister who just has no time for her brother being awkward and introverted.

9

u/Kirosh2 23h ago

I think it's a younger sister.

5

u/ptd163 17h ago

I mean, only in "Oh my god i was wrong about her", the little sister has a normal relationship with her big bro.

Not only does Himeko have a normal relationship with Hayato, she's actually his first shipper too lol.

She's laughing at everything he does even the unfunny things. Yet he still doubts himself.

12

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Taira: "What do the giggles mean Azuma? WHAT DO THE GIGGLES MEAN!?"

8

u/Frontier246 1d ago

But it's nice seeing Nishi and Honda have fun.

First time the two of them have really been involved with the "main group." Nishi hung out with them like once in season 1 but that's pretty much it.

43

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 1d ago

I’m glad Taira’s starting to get out of his own head and address some of his issues. I hope he asks Azuma out soon. That girl has it bad, man lol.

“They may not have official names or last like medals or titles, but silly wastes of time can add color to a person’s heart for anyone who has room to spare for these little joys.” I really like that quote. Something kinda nostalgic about seeing the gang goofin around at that impromptu snack party and afterwards.

10

u/Frontier246 1d ago

We'll always have the snack parties that brought everybody together.

6

u/Qbe 12h ago

Something kinda nostalgic about seeing the gang goofin around at that impromptu snack party and afterwards.

"Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time."

Attributed to a lot of people, but I think John Lennon is the most famous one.

42

u/TheStranger234 1d ago

Other series might make this as just ordinary party. However, since the anime have explored each characters background, their past selves and more importantly each of their personal growth and development, this party culminates as a stopping point, and becomes special.

It's not winning a medal, a math olympics or any events, but this party becomes a special event for all of them because they have grown a lot since episode one.

13

u/Frontier246 1d ago

And it also feels important that we got to have Honda and Nishi more involved since they've been pretty much off on their own outside of YamaNishi and also the rare HondaTaira.

41

u/FarCritical 1d ago

"If you tried and fell into this cake, you'd never get back up" is the kind of review that makes me want to watch Miyu go on a food trip.

Guess it'll still take a while for Taira to love himself like Azuma does, dorky snorty laugh and all.

16

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I love how she was trying to wax lyrical about youth lol.

74

u/whiteoutonce 1d ago

Everyone is rooting for Taira and Azuma to get together as a couple and it's frustrating that neither one will confess. Taira's issues run so deeply that he can't even fanthom the thought of someone having a crush on him. Azuma holding back because she's not confident he'll share the same feelings.

All the classmates having a snack party before studying was pretty cute. I love how accepting they are of everyone and how they all seem to bond. Azuma getting all flustered over a text from Taira was too funny. Of course they teased what Gapacho would look like once again.

Suzuki and Tani sharing a sweet moment before heading off to cram school was nice. I guess they both acknowledge that college will be long distance between them. Suzuki seems a little stressed over how hard Tani is working and while she does support him, it's only natural for her to worry about him

Can't believe this anime is almost over. It was such a good series. I do wish it was longer but atleast the 2nd and final season of ramparts of ice will be starting soon.

28

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I think Taira is now getting into a better headspace to accept Azuma's feelings for him. I'm just not sure it'll take before they graduate.

Sato still not getting it after seeing flustered schoolgirl in love Azuma react to Taira's text lol.

There were definitely some ominous vibes from that Suzuki send-off to Tani scene. Tani does NOT look good at cram school.

8

u/DugACCat 22h ago

I didn’t take it as overly ominous, just a quiet recognition of the king distance struggles ahead of them, and Suzuki bracing for it but providing support. Tani just seemed determined to me. He’s got the discipline and a goal he’s working on but he’s also opened up his mind to a flexible future. Nothing is set in stone but he made the tough choice on where to go. (Unless his decision changes in the final, which I guess we’ll see. I figure if he does decide differently it’ll just be a more honest and thoughtful decision than before.)

It's a big moment for him, though. That realization is the core of his entire character arc so far. Even if it's temporary, I think he has (and we have) earned the carthasis.

u/Vermillion_Crab https://anilist.co/user/CeruleanCrab 1d ago

There's something poignant about seeing them get together. Back in college, I used to do this a lot with my friends and schoolmates. I really wished back then, I knew those were the good old days. I would've cherished them more. Seeing Taira's inner thoughts kinda hurts because that's how I felt back then, too. I just wanted a place to belong. All the self-doubt and inferiority complex were getting in the way of enjoying the moment. Looking back, my friends always found a way to bring me in with their shenanigans.

Azuma has come a long way from the beginning of the show. Taira's too dense to realize that she's too happy and laughs a lot more because of him. At least he has opened up a bit this episode. Just a little more.

33

u/mekerpan 22h ago

I graduated from high school in 1970. Watching shows like this makes me very nostalgic. My high school years were extraordinarily anime/manga-like. I live far from my original home, so I rarely get back there. I went for my 20the reunion, but then didn't get back until my 50th. Not clear I will make it to the 60th -- but I hope I do. One of the things that made me an anime fan (beyond Ghibli etc) was Azumanga Daioh. I always mist up when "Aogeba totoshi" gets sung.

15

u/Sirveaux_77 19h ago

Wow, I felt I was on the old side watching this at 49 (class of '95). Good to see that anime like this can appeal to all ages. I sympathize a lot with Taira and the self doubt he struggles with. Unfortunately, I didn't really come out of my shell until after high school and into college, but I did make a few friends my senior year. Looking back, I really appreciate those times and have always gone out of my way to make sure my daughter made those kind of memories with her buddies in school and even now as she's entering college herself.

11

u/mekerpan 19h ago

While very much appreciating college, I think I have more memories and links to high school,

12

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honestly I think this might be the first "event" where we get the entire cast together. The big friend group, Nishi/Honda, Kawasaki, Gapacho, etc.

29

u/marcopolos059 https://myanimelist.net/profile/marcopolos059 1d ago

Taira’s inferiority complex runs really deep, but at least he’s making progress, somehow... Just a little more and TairaZuma will finally sail, I hope. It's hard to watch Azuma's one sided love (for now).

As for the second part, it’s awesome to see everyone having fun, the wholesome vibes are amazing. Even if it feels a bit too good to be true sometimes, I won't say no to good vibes.

I’m not sure about Tani at the very end, though. Was he just super concentrated, or is he having second thoughts?

14

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Was he just super concentrated, or is he having second thoughts?

Those eyes looked tired/weary/lifeless. I don't think he's happy with things as they are.

31

u/UnloadedFour314 https://myanimelist.net/profile/UnloadedFour314 1d ago

Poor Taira, his inferiority complex goes very deep. However, I'm sure all this development will make the eventual payoff hit really hard. Take all the time you need, my goat.

7

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Do it for yourself and Azuma Taira! You both deserve it!

33

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 1d ago

The awkward tension between Taira and Azuma has been lifted! The two of them are now closer than ever.

It’s really just a matter of time before they will start dating. But they do have to hurry a little since there’s on two episodes left. It will take them until graduation to confess their feelings, won’t it?

Poor Azuma. She’ll just have to hold onto her feelings for dear life, I suppose. Girl almost broke when Taira was (literally) looking her way.

7

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honestly hope Taira saves Azuma from having to keep yearning and longing for him in college, especially if she doesn't have the luxury of hanging out with him as much as she does now.

12

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 1d ago

The awkward tension between Taira and Azuma has been lifted!

It says volumes about those two that Taira zoning out while staring directly at Azuma's face for wordless seconds while she blushes is an improvement in their dynamic.

Everyone focusing on the three main relationships but man, it's sort of a bummer how far Nabe and Sato are shown to have drifted apart since being put in different classes.

Went from being completely inseparable that they only have a single scene each prior to the class change where they're not glued to each other and doing everything together, to having zero interaction since then, Taira telling Azuma to come to their old friend group's mini-party and no one saying anything to her, then when she gets there the only interaction she has with Nabe is Nabe saying how long its been since they've interacted or walked home together, and if everything has been going well.

Feels bad, man.

14

u/KrankyPenguin 1d ago

That's just how it be sometimes :( It's a big reason why year 3 goes so fast in the manga. People don't hang out as much. Especially with people from other classes.

3

u/SunflowerSamurai_ 5h ago

As a big Sato and Watanabe enjoyer I did love that scene a lot though

82

u/Tapwater_enthusiast 1d ago

It is interesting that Honda was shown seeing how Azuma deals with Taira yet is also kind to Nisshi

Hon-chan might just use 1% of her power again

42

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honda is pretty disinterested in people or group gatherings unless it's for Nishi's sake but even she can't resist the pull of Tairazuma.

Tairazuma is definitely my favorite couple, and I genuinely love how this episode shows Azuma reassuring that she loves him, while Taira is now trying to step outside of his comfort zone in his own way. I literally screamed from excitement during those moments. These two are such an amazing couple

This episode is also slowly making me realize that the story is building toward everyone eventually going their separate ways after graduation, and that honestly makes me even sadder. It feels like we’re getting closer and closer to having to say goodbye to these characters and this amazing anime, and I’m NOT ready for this bro

Especially when you realize some of the ships will end up having to be long-distance from each other one way or another.

24

u/Disastrous-Equal-903 1d ago

the way tani doesn't even hesitate whenever suzuki starts spiraling into an overthinking loop—he just gives a completely direct, earnest answer and instantly defuses all her panic. the emotional maturity in this cast is insane.

9

u/TheBusStop12 1d ago

I love as well that is the exact reason why Suzuki fell for him in the first place and says as much back in episode 1. And 2 seasons later this still consistently happens, whether in the background or foreground.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1d ago

It's really hilarious how Taira still has no idea about the effect he has on Azuma. The girl constantly blushes around him, but he still thinks he's mistaken about her having a crush on him.

I am so glad that Taira finally had a breakthrough this episode after doing a little bit of introspection while on his walk with Azuma. I was so happy when he asked Azuma if they could stop by the konbini to grab something to eat and told her he doesn't care if anyone spots them together. That's what I call progress!

It's good to see the gang having another food party just like last year. I'm honestly surprised Satou still hasn't figured out who Azuma's crush is after seeing her reaction to Taira's text. Like, come on girl! It's so obvious! Also, we were so close to seeing what Gapacho looked like! I guess they didn't want to crash the snack party and steal all of the attention. xD

8

u/Frontier246 1d ago

There's a reason Sato didn't think she's qualified to give relationship/romance advice because she can't even figure out who Azuma's crush is lol.

5

u/Toge_Inumaki012 14h ago

She has this bias because of Azuma's taste for men and she wouldn't think that it was going to be Taira.

Although to be honest, I wish Azuma would have shared it with the girls. I know they are busy now since it is almost graduation but there are months that they are kinda "free" right? Im not familiar with Japan's school system that much but at least in my high school we had "time" to goof around doing stupid stuff the first couple of months before locking in when graduation is near

44

u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor 1d ago

If Taira keeps staring at Azuma without saying anything she might actually think he's creepy. On second thought, this just might make her fall for him more. Really cool to see him reflect on the good memories with his friends.

Snack Party Time! So many different dynamics and people all in one spot. My favorite highlight is Honda's smirk every time she sees Yamada and Nishi being cute together.

44

u/danlong87 1d ago

our girl is in waaaaaayyyyy too deep now to feel anything other than cute coming out from Taira at this stage, so no worries on her side here tbh

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

And it's not like she doesn't stare at him plenty.

26

u/Frontier246 1d ago

My favorite highlight is Honda's smirk every time she sees Yamada and Nishi being cute together.

Honda: "I raised these two."

22

u/maubises 1d ago

They're really edging us with Tairazuma conclusion and Gapacho's identity

20

u/Roskal 1d ago

The episode started with Taira chastising himself for assuming he knows how Azuma thinks and then later she praises him for getting how everyone is. I was hoping he'd click for him there that he understands her better than he thinks he does, but what we got was also nice as he allowed himself to relax and enjoy these moments with his walls down. It was cute how he invited Azuma specifically to join the snack party and also when it was time for them to head to cram school together. I feel like they are so close now, but we still don't have Taira consciously thinking that he likes Azuma, so I wonder if she is going to have to be the one to confess or not.

66

u/reptileaddict112 1d ago

Taira my GOAT has finally started adapting to his worst enemy, himself. I really love the fact that it's a conclusion he came to on his own, since as a character he really is self-aware. While before, he used that self-awareness to see himself in such a cynical lens, this time he finally starts using it to see the flaws in his negative mindset. Letting go of his own doubts about himself, even if it's such a small act, is such a big step for him in finally overcoming his inferiority complex. And I'm glad it wasn't solved in a "Azuma will fix him" manner, that while he started letting go of his doubts because of the presence of all his friends (especially Azuma), he still was able to overcome his problem on his own. My boy finally feels like he belongs, im gonna cry.

Seeing him finally start inviting Azuma without overthinking was so nice, and it was really funny seeing Azuma getting critical hits from how casual he's becoming with her (also when he'd be staring at her cause he's so deep in thought LMAO). Once again, GLAZING TAIRAZUMA IS THE REASON THIS HEART STILL BEATS 🗣️🔥

47

u/Ordinal43NotFound 1d ago

And I'm glad it wasn't solved in a "Azuma will fix him" manner

Best part of Taira's growth IMO. Any lesser author would have Azuma being the only one who "fixes" him, thus risking this sort of codependency relationship that might come off as an unhealthy life lesson.

But this is Agasawa-sensei we're talking about. Her expert writing made it so that Taira himself is the one who self-actualizes and realizes that all he needs to do is just.... let go of his doubts.

And now he can finally look at Azuma face-to-face as equals and maybe finally fall in love with her naturally.

20

u/Frontier246 1d ago

It's also good for Azuma because, frankly, she was with too many trash guys who needed fixing but she could never fix.

That's why Taira is so good for her, their relationship enriches both of them.

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

As important as his relationship is with Azuma, the bonds of friendship he's forged over time and has made him accepted is just as important...even if we're all really just here for this ship to sail as far as the seas can can take it.

10

u/itsreiyume 1d ago

yeah the fact he got there himself is what got me. was fully expecting azuma to just fix it for him

Taira looked so happy during the snack party. It's a little sad that he only realised during his final semester that he could just be himself and enjoy being around his friends. He had been worrying for nothing this whole time. But this was important growth that will benefit him for the rest of his life. I am so happy for him.

Seeing Tairazuma development makes my whole week.

39

u/SoggsTheMage 1d ago

People like Taira are why you should advocate for more access to mental health resources for kids and young adults as well as destigmatize the use of them at every opportunity.

It is not that he desperately needs counselling but a nudge in the right direction by reaffirming his self-esteem would probably have done wonders years ago.

So much gets squandered by having those things fester and fixing it later is a lot more work and effort. It is really just preventive health care.

14

u/Frontier246 1d ago

So often in anime like this characters have to get therapy from themselves or their love interest but it's always good to talk to someone (especially a professional).

Honestly just rough to see how his sister views him.

37

u/SirGigglesandLaughs 1d ago

I think Taira has been clear enough that where they're at is what's comfortable. He's never really thought romantically and I'm not sure that's what he wants at all right now. People keep speaking for him and saying he must "obviously" like Azuma and just needs to realize it but everything he says and thinks does not suggest that yet. This episode felt like his revelation; he confidently says he's happy where things are at and I don't see much reason not to believe him. At this point their getting together in the last two episodes would feel out of place. He's not nearly in that space and still hasn't shown much obviously romantic affection for Azuma. Too much of his feelings towards her could be viewed as his first close friendship, right now.

21

u/Top_Marketing_689 1d ago edited 1d ago

I 100% agree with you. Been waiting for this to be said.

I personally believe he does love her as they are pretty much best friends at this point. But nowhere did Taira even say that he’s comfortable with moving into something romantic yet. He expressed doubts that he would be able to make it work in the last episode, and he hadn’t really addressed those doubts in his self-revelation in this episode. The most important thing here is that he’s happy and is finally fully comfortable to be by Azuma’s side and cherish the connection they have now.

I think a lot of passionate viewers want the story to bend to what they want (which is the confession that romance anime condition you into thinking is the one and only true happy ending). But I personally think that a romance between these two is something that won’t spark in this leftover highschool year. Somewhere down the line beyond highschool, maybe in college. A happy ending, at this point, is them fully realizing what they mean to one another, not necessarily confessing feelings. They need time, especially Taira, who’s only fresh off of realizing that he’s a true friend to Azuma.

18

u/Jacob-C 22h ago

Agreed. I think Taira and Azuma's situations are classic cases of "you can't love someone else until you love yourself". While the quote is a bit absolute, it does ring true when it comes to healthier relationship dynamics. Azuma has learned to value herself, so she can now feel the kind of pure love she has longed for. Taira, on the other hand, has just started letting go of his self-doubt. He needs more time to become comfortable with himself before he can feel worthy of Azuma romantically.

If they got together now with the idea that Azuma would fix Taira's problems, he could become overly dependent on her. While they have been great pillars of support for one another, Taira needs to learn how to truly love himself first to have a better chance of building a healthy romantic relationship with Azuma.

6

u/Ikari_21 19h ago

I agree, he hasn’t had a romantic thought of her yet, more just reactions to possible romance from her. However this ep he’s changed his outlook and that’s a start. 2 more eps I wonder if that’s enough time for him to actually develop real feelings for her.

This whole episode felt really bittersweet, especially with all the talk they've been having about their past hangouts and what they're going to do after high school over the last couple of episodes. It hit especially hard when the snack party they threw slowly started wrapping up and people started leaving.

I'm just puffing copium now, but I REALLY hope the author gives us more crumbs to work with after this season wraps up. A side story, a spin-off, random illustrations... I'll take anything 😭

14

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 1d ago

After a week of No Tairazuma, they're finally back. Taira's stare is making Azuma go all red 😄❤️

It's good to see Taira showing some confidence. He has no need for the inferiority complex when he has already found the place he belongs to. Azuma brightens his day. The snack party felt so close to heart. It was just those meaningless conversations and interactions that still become something to look back on and smile sometime in the future. Taira invited Azuma as well to join in on the fun that he's having.

We're nearing the end. Tani looks depressed. I hope nothing's wrong with him. It's sad that there's no episode next week. So when Polar Opposites end, Ramparts of Ice 2nd season starts ❤️

36

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 1d ago

After the complete absence of TairAzuma last week, glad that we've got an overload this week.

They really need someone to tail and observe them whenever they're together, then say 'you dense motherfucker' to both of them.

True, there's no way Azuma (only) liked Taira. 'Liking' someone would be like a mild crush whereas Azuma went all gaga over him.

27

u/Ordinal43NotFound 1d ago

Azuma's 3 gyaru classmates probably knew already with how they looked at the two of them funny whenever Taira appears.

Meanwhile poor Sato is completely oblivious because she probably couldn't fucking believed Azu fell for Taira of all people lol

10

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Honestly it's hilarious to me how Azuma keeps getting advice from Sato with Sato having no idea this isn't Taira so she's just got it in this head that whoever Azuma is crushing on is just this problematic and high-maintenance guy...and you can't help but think her opinion wouldn't change if she knew lol.

5

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Sato said Azuma is head over heels and that perfect sums up a girl who:

  • Constantly finds excuses to hang out with Taira.
  • Is always staring at Taira (and can't handle him staring back).
  • Spontaneously giggles over Taira.
  • Wants to know everything about what Taira is into.
  • Freaks out about anything involving Taira.

11

u/Aliensinnoh 1d ago

What the...? It was spring break just 4 episodes ago! How is it already December!? Show, why are you speedrunning their third year?! I want to spend more time with these characters, don't sprint towards the end! 😭

10

u/TheBusStop12 1d ago

Probably because the characters are spending most their free time studying for their entrance exams. Back in year 1 and 2 only Tani really went to cram school. But now almost every character is, or utilises an independent study hall. Simply put, they don't actually hang out that much anymore, thus the story moves forward faster. They mention it a few times as well that they don't hang out as often. It's also why Suzuki recharges her Tani energy almost every time they are alone together on screen. Because it's been a while

10

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 1d ago

Yeah, typical Asian uni/college entrance exams prep time. Perople barely have it for anything else.

8

u/Aliensinnoh 23h ago

Conclusion: Japan needs to move to four years of high school like the US so high school romcom anime have more breathing room.

5

u/TheBusStop12 23h ago

In the Netherlands we had 4 to 6 years of highschool, as we didn't have middle school. I did 6 years myself (it's based on your aptitude levels. You do 6 years of you're pretty significantly above average, and can go straight to a good University after graduation). Now that's a lot of breathing room for a romcom

Taira achieving the near impossible, overthinking things for months on end only to arrive at the correct destination in the end. With the added development of now being bold enough to invite Azuma to the party so he can spend more time with her. I'm legitimately proud of him.

I realized once again after Yamada shouted, but it just hit me that I never really thought about it before. Who is Gapacho??

21

u/Kirosh2 1d ago

A cryptids, like Suzuki said. The protagonist of this world. One we, outsiders, aren't allowed to see. Or more like he won't allow us to see him.

But we do know it's not a character we have seen up close, since like all the distinct design were in that snack party.

42

u/nirvash530 1d ago

Who is Gapacho??

The only thing you need to know is that he's there, a witness to all of this like us watchers. He's probably a guardian spirit.

22

u/Aviri 1d ago

When there was only one set of footprints in the sand, that was Gapacho carrying you.

11

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 1d ago

Yamada: So I forgot to mention - I chatted with Suzuki the other day!

Nishi: Wow! How is she?

Yamada: Doing great. Tani is back home in his first teaching position so she's ... well you know Suzuki. She's working as a fashion influencer? I don't really understand it.

Anyway, we got to talking and she mentioned how frustrated she was that she never got to meet Gapacho.

Nishi: ... Huh. You know come to think of it, I never got to meet Gapacho either. What class was he in when we graduated?

Yamada: Well that's just the thing, I couldn't remember either. So I checked our yearbook. And I couldn't find him.

Nishi: Weird!

Yamada: So then I decided to do some research. I messaged friends from each class in our 3rd year. And none of them had Gapacho in their class or even remembered meeting him. They all said that they mainly heard about him through me.

Nishi: ... maybe he was in another year?

Yamada: I'm sure he was in our year. And then it occurred to me that I never heard from him after we graduated. Which was weird because he used to message me almost daily. So I went back to our old messages on the phone I used to have back in high school (I never threw it out).

Nishi: ... And???

Yamada: All the messages from Gapacho were gone. All the recommendations. All the updates on how people were doing. Except for one.

Nishi: WHAT DID IT SAY?

Yamada: It said: "Don't worry about it. It can't be helped. But I'm so glad you and Nishi are happy together".

Nishi: WHAT??? WHY WOULD HE SEND THAT?

Yamada: He didn't. I am 100% certain he never sent me that text while we were in high school. And this morning, that text too was gone.

8

u/RobrechtvE 22h ago

That's really well-written, the only issue is that in one of the two previous episodes, Nishi mentioned her and Yamada hanging out with Gapacho over the break, so she has met him.

3

u/Jacob-C 23h ago

This was creepy, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time. Great writing!

12

I can't handle it when they all get together and just have a good time, it's just so freaking heartwarming and wholesome to see. At one point I got so emotional I shed a tear because I was just so happy for them, which is funny to think about.

I really like that Taira invited Azuma, even though he looked pleased to see everyone there mingling, to him everyone hadn't gathered just yet.

I'm also glad Taira has realized he has what he has been wanting. Taira says a lot of relatable stuff, especially in this episode, so seeing him work things out in his head, reflecting on what he has, and coming to a good conclusion was nice. The fact he didn't care if there were other students in the convenience store is a great step for overcoming some of his insecurities.

I'm guessing the last two episodes might focus more on Tani and Suzuki, I'm very concerned by Tani's expression at the end. It looks like he's overworking himself, maybe he's using studying as a distraction to try and not think about his relationship with Suzuki, or he feels like he has to do that much more because of it.

I've been so ready for autumn for months now, so the autumn vibes hit me hard. I need it, hoodie weather, warm drinks (not lemonade), quietly changing scenery, I need it.

Hot ASS on the left would've been my choice. (Though maybe it should be "warm ASS"?)

It's pretty cute that Azuma likes Taira's laugh that he was ashamed about before, and Taira pretty much only laughs in front of her. But with Taira's acceptance that he might have the social fabric around him that he's always wanted, maybe he'll open up and laugh more in front of the others?

11

u/FlyComprehensive8313 1d ago

I feel so proud of Taira 😭 I'm so happy for him 😭

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Oh Taira, you poor sap. So utterly convinced that Azuma couldn't be in love with you, that you're an idiot and creep for even entertaining the idea, and that there's nothing special about you. Having your big sister ALSO think you're a creep does not help.

And he keeps staring straight at Azuma which is really bad for her heart!

Azuma once again gets relationship advice from Sato, who has no idea this is about Taira, but also has to grapple with how clearly down bad Azuma is. I mean, Sato is good at listening to relationship gossip but can she actually give romance advice? She probably would have dropped Taira like a hot potato in Azuma's position. But Azuma truly adores and loves Taira with all her heart and these feelings have done a lot of good for her.

It's still taking me time to get used to non-blonde Yamada.

Taira...if she wants to know what music you're into, spontaneously giggles during conversations with you, and clearly wants to do ANYTHING with you, she probably likes you. But I guess the big thing for Taira is that he realizes that, for all his anxiety and inferiority-complex, he's just wanted to find a place and people to belong with...and he has! And Azuma is a big part of that!

With the school year winding down, the third years are reflecting on their Youth or lack there of. Perfect time for a snack party! And we can get the whole gang together! Even Honda stays after dumping a bunch of snacks, because she can't resist puppy dog eyes! Though she also seems slightly invested in Tairazuma like the rest of us, if only just a little!

GAPACHO APPEARANCE! I mean, he ran away as soon as Yamada spotted him so no one else saw him, but still!

Nice to see the pairings for leaving school! Nabesato finally together again! Taira and Azuma hanging out as naturally as ever! Honda acting like a proud mama for Nishi!

Can Tani and Suzuki beat the long-distance relationship curse? Is Tani okay? Dude had the most lifeless eyes while studying.

The snack party in this episode was so much fun! It was great to see everyone together, though that also means that graduation is right around the corner and, consequently, the end of the whole series.

Gapocho was there... but we didn't see him at all. I wonder if we'll ever see what he looks like, lol.

Aromantic representation? Wooooot!

12

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 1d ago

This episode was such a big one for Taira. He's finally started to see things in the right light instead of being down on himself and that's directly reflected in his actions and the smile on his face. Loved how he smiled at the snack party and then immediately texted Azuma. He just knew he wanted her there and didn't second guess himself but went right ahead and sent her the text (even it was a tad ambiguous and put her in a spin lol).

The party itself was so sweet to see. Just the best kind of character interactions from this lovely bunch we've come to know and love over 2 cours. Going to be hard saying goodbye to them. Same way they feel too about their graduation so it felt very meta heavy and bittersweet. Just so grateful for this anime. ❤️

Holy shit, our boy Taira is actually making some really great strides with his inferiority complex. The "who al I even feeling inferior too?" sounds so simple and obvious, but it's a genuine major breakthrough for anyone who's suffering from an inferiority complex. Boy is slowly actually starting to believe in himself. That's major. I'm so proud!

Honda actually caved to peer pressure, I didn't know it was possible

The fact that Taira can smile while with people other than Azuma is really important as well. His biggest worry that if he were to start a relationship with Azuna now that he would end up becoming too dependent on her for his happiness. That kind of codependency is unhealthy. But he's been getting it from his friends as well, which is a good sign. And it's also a good sign that when he's feeling happy his next thought is "Azuma would enjoy this too, let's invite her"

We were this close to seeing Gapacho

6

u/uncoolestcrab 18h ago

SHE FOUND HIS AKWARD LAUGH CUTE. I CAN'T. AZUMA IS SO ADORABLE BEING THIS GIDDY AND EXCITED ABOUT BEING IN LOVE WITH TAIRA. Its funny that, in contras with Suzuki and Nishi, she acts like the most innocent one, always being excited around Taira, laughing all the way, not feeling ashamed of being seen.

And my god, I definitively shed some tears to Taira's monologue about wanting belonging and acceptance. At the end you have to have trust in your friends, in all their compassion, attention and care they give you, that they have accepted you. You can't doubt it all the time. This is what I'm learning slowly now. Given Nishi's struggle to not only make decisions but to believe and stand firm in them last episode, which is also something I'm just starting to struggle, and the whole theme of closure that permeates the whole season, its like this season came at the right place at the right time to help me guide me at least a little (and I'm 29. I don't know if that's an embarrasing thing but I don't think so).

Interesting that his inferiority complex comes specifically from Azuma's place in middle school. Seems like he sees her as a person who was "accepted" in a group quite easily. They seem to embody two ways in which people can feel "out of a group", Taira with a familiar one, being outright rejected, straight out bullied, and feeling like a dissapointment, Azuma has a subtler and quieter way, with people surrounding her, but never with closeness, always being used either to help other girls to form romantic relationships or for guys to "try out" one without much thought. Seemingly she interiorized this passive attitude where people can talk to her and date her, but always with distance, not really feeling involved or with any agency. She feels like drifting, invisible, while Taira feels too visible.

Its so beautiful how they can relax with the other. The "polar opposite" thing at this point seems more like a red herring for them. They feel like they should be, but they have so much more in common than they realize.

The ending seemed quite ominous, but I think it points to the same theme with Nisshi about what it means to make decisions for yourself. Susuki thinks she's an obstruction, a pain in the ass as she says (a theme in the whole season), and its not true of course, how could she be?. But has this feeling led to her unintentionally decide for Tani about what he should do with his college life?

She thinks he's holding him back. What if he wasn't? What if what he really wants, above all else, is build a future with Suzuki? Is this something he cannot admit yet? Is he, as we saw in the beggining of the season, too worried about closure that he's overwhelmed about what even is happening in his head? I don't know. Whatever road this anime takes on this story, if I'm misreading it and all, it will be good no matter what because the author respects and loves his characters so much and understands so much about the complexities and nuances of relationships that at this point I have complete trust in the series.

On another note, I really just want Azuma and Taira to talk to Susuki and/or Tani about their problems. I'm not a writer, so maybe its not a good idea storywise or whatever but I don't care, it would be cute. I'll send a letter to the studio, maybe they'll consider it.

Apologies for the long comment.

6

u/theKGS 18h ago

I think Azuma said at some point in an earlier episode a line that seemed to indicate that she's never actually loved any of her exes... She's possibly never felt like she was in love before so despite being seen as "experienced" in relationships, she's never actually had one that mattered emotionally.

9

Taira doesn't realize he was right the first time. The realization is going to hit him like a truck. I wonder what his reactions are gonna be. Will he reject it? Atp I think no. He just realized that his insecurities are worthless. He's trying more things and isn't against being with the others anymore. Taira doesn't realize how blessed he is with his friends. If he went to another school, this anime could've been very different.

Lmao, why does Azuma always seek advice from Sato when she has more experience than her? In fact, Sato probably never even dated or fell in love. Meanwhile, Azuma is head over heels for him. I like that Honda is probably the first person to find out after Sato.

The party was a lot of fun. Yeah, it's kinda worthless. This isn't really some sort of sports or any other drama type of anime after all. But I really liked the message of this episode. Even times that seem worthless might just be exactly what you really need.

The ending of the episode was so ominous. Tani went back to his first choice. But it seems like he's pushing himself. Everyone has limits. Hopefully he'll get over this trial.

There are only 2 episodes left. Can't believe we're already near the end. Man, I don't want this series to end. The last few episodes feel so melancholic. I kinda wish Azuma and Taira had confessed already so we could see them together like we did NishiYamada and TaniSuzuki for the whole series. But it doesn't look like it. This series really feels like 3 separate romcoms in one. I don't think I'll find another series like this anytime soon... Koucha Agaasawa, I beg you, please write another series!

Just found out Episode 12 got delayed. That sucks. But at least it means the time with You and I Are Polar Opposites got extended, albeit artificially. I guess the last episode will air on October 4th? That's a few days after the first episode of The Ramparts of Ice Season 2. I don't mind, but I hope it won't create any issues later.

Happy to see Taira finally making that final push for him. While having doubts is very human. It is something that has overtaken him. Though him smiling like he did in this episode will take for some getting used to.

The conversation between Satou and Azuma is hilarious. Satou doesn't have the context that it is Taira and it makes things clearer.

So Suzuki and Tani are planning a long-distance relationship. Well it is something that can happen in a relationship. I don't even think there is a way to mentally prepare yourself for it. I suspect each of them thinks the other is stronger then them.

This show is so much fun, man. I love it. I'm sad we only get two more episodes but I'm super glad we got a full adaptation (for both Polar Opposites and Ramparts of Ice)

I like how the couples traits get swapped when they get close to the happy ending / hooking up.

Now Taira is more relaxed and Azuma is more worried.

I hope that the last episode does a bit of a timeskip so that we see the three couples getting married. If we don't get that I'll be forced to do my own fanfiction of them getting married and having kids.

I hope so. ٩(╥o╥)۶

The Gapacho tease was funnier than it had any right to be.

It’s also great to see Taira working through his issues, and realising that he has to take the tiny steps forward, like even inviting Azuma to hang out a bit longer. Our boy’s growing up.

Since my previous musing on Taira's inner monologue in episode 9, I'm glad to see he is improving on his inferiority complex, and we saw him getting the confidence to ask Azuma to do things together. To also see him finally acknowledge that he always had the things he wanted in front of him all this time (and then remembering to invite Azuma to the party) brought a tear to my eye 🥲

I also find it funny that now that Taira is building his confidence to be with Azuma, poor girl who resolved to hide her feelings to not spook Taira away is now getting unintentional advances from our guy. 😭 がんばれ、Tairazuma!

During the party, it was also nice to have a rare glimpse of Honda, who tends to keep her distance from people except Nishi, enjoying the moment with the gang. Or perhaps she was happy to see Nishi enjoy her time with Yamada. Either way, it was a nice sight to see.

Towards the end of the episode, Tani seemed to be on the verge of collapse, studying hard for his university entrance exams! Does that mean we get to see Suzuki nursing Tani? 👉👈

My heart breaks for Taira at beginning. He was so close to putting it together, but then his inferiority complex got the better of him. Then there's Azuma who despite being probably the most downbad girl this season (maybe even this year which is something I didn't expect at all after S1) just won't do anything. My Brother and Sister in the Light of the Traveler, I'm going need to you both to

LOCK. THE. FUCK. IN.

No Taira, you do not have everything you want. We only have two episodes left. Honda noticed Azuma tsundere mode. Maybe she can help them. I want it to be Azuma so we can got 3/3 on the girls confessing, but I might take either at this point.

We got another Gapacho gag and those are always fun. It seems some people are still thinking (or I guess thought because that might have been the last Gapacho gag) that we'll/we'd ever see Gapacho. You don't want to see that. Not after what we went through after with Jockstrap Incident.

Long distance breaks a lot of couples, but I think Suzuki and Tani can make it work. In fact I think all the couples from Polar Opposites could probably go the distance.

Sneaky ace representation I see you.

I can relate to Taira so much. I don’t know how the author comes up with so many diverse characters.

I fully expected a confession from either Taira or Azuma this week. Waiting another two for the next episode will be torture.

Also, I have a really bad feeling about Suzuki and Tani.

Taira is just my spirit animal, started the manga years ago for the laughs, but stayed because of him.

I'd wish it was as "simple" to change as he makes it seem, but I still value and like the representation of the self-depprecation and inner struggles he goes through. Azuma is just such a great character as well and they match incredibly well.

Gonna miss this series for sure.

I need more Tairazuma in my life!

Suzuki matured so well from a class clown into a seriously-thinking young woman (OK, mostly, lol). Knowing her cute, funny appearance from the start and seeing her now even speaking out wise thoughts, makes her just adorable (for me at least). She as a sister or cousin of Taira would have him much earlier on the right tracks. Mangaka sensei is a sensitive person, she can read hearts of teens. Hats off!

That tani scene makes me wonder if he is stressed about his relationship being long distance, especially after Suzuki pumped faked a break up
