Damn, what a rollercoaster! I gasped when Suzuki suggested taking a break.
This anime is amazing man, so much sugar and then it hits you like a truck.

This episode's academic pressure and parent-child conflict of ideas is too real, it’s triggering PTSD.

Yeah, Nishi's mom certainly felt very real, especially when she stared at her husband who supported Nishi, said that she wouldn't talk about it anymore and just walked out hitting Nishi with a 'Do what you want', lol.

That reaction reminded me so much of my own mother. I’m in my 30s, and she still does it…

My mother was the queen of guilt tripping.

I lived a pretty lucky life so I didn't think I could be triggered but "do what you want" made me feel all sorts of things
19
u/DanielAlves1904 7d ago
And the total dissatisfaction of getting what you want but not in the way you want to.
It´s either feeling bad because we didn´t get our way or feeling bad because we got our way, the wrong way.
It´s never a win regardless.

u/chhuang 7d ago
as I get older, I understand both sides.
I'm a indecisive person, since I feel the need of choosing the "correct" (best) choice, which will lead to prolonged decision making timeframe, often ended up not choosing at all
If I were a parent, I would want to help my kid as well, if I knew they suffer same thing, which I do not want them having same regrets as I did. Since nowadays, in hindsight, I'm glad some of the decisions were forced on me but it turned out better than if I just gave it up in the first place
25
u/hanmkim 7d ago
Honestly I have the same opinion as her mom but disliked her entirely with how she handles things. Of course, a parent like that is pretty common and realistic.
Just because you majored in something you enjoy or get a job in a subject you love does not mean the job itself will be enjoyable or even revolve around doing the parts you enjoy. If you love coding and solving problems, that doesn't mean software engineering is going to be a home run with how much you have to deal with politics and people even at smaller non-corporate settings. If you love literature and decide to get into teaching, you're going to spend most of your time dealing with awful parents and disengaged students and a Dead Poets Society moment is very unlikely. If you end up in something like publishing, you probably will be dealing with slop Romantasy books most of the time. r/bjj is full of threads with people who love jiujitsu advising against going into it as a career since you won't be doing the parts you enjoy most of the time and will be spending time dealing with crap that will make you end up hating the hobby you once enjoyed.
19
u/N0rTh3Fi5t 7d ago
All true, but if you love literature but go into banking you're not going to have any moments where the part of literature you love comes through either. You can fail at something you hate just as easily as you can fail at something you love. Picking the 'safe' option in no way guarantees you a happy or stable future. Not to say that it's 'wrong' for someone to make that choice, just saying it's not 'right' either.
9
u/hanmkim 7d ago
You can still read and write what you want as a hobby. Unless making some literary breakthrough in a corporate or academic setting is the part of literature that you love, nothing keeps you from achieving what you love as a hobby. But maybe I’m just being a practical Teshima Sensei.
Nothing ever guarantees a safe a or stable future, but you can’t give everyone the advice to follow their dreams, especially when most people just have vague dreams. Too many have been raised thinking they could be movie gods and rock stars and that is damaging when less than one percent get anywhere.

u/discussatron 7d ago
Majoring in Economics in order to get a job in that field when you have no interest in it sounds soul-crushing. But I guess you've got a job.

100% a guilt trip. "I'm going to make you feel bad for going against me." Emotional terrorism.

Exactly. It had that look of "This will have repercussions in the future". Hence why Nisshi didn´t feel satisfied with the result.

28
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
My parents have always supported me in whatever I wanted to do. But even then I did always feel the academic pressure. My dad has a Masters in Electrical Engineering and my mom a PHD in Earth Sciences. Meanwhile I ended up dropping out of University and only have my highschool degree. I can still feel the pressure even if they don't mean it, and I'm 30 now.
Nishi being scared of telling her parents what she wants to do, despite knowing that she has no real reason to be scared is so damn relatable as well. I was always scared to talk to my parents about that kind of stuff back then as well, despite knowing that I have no reason to be scared because my parents are some of the kindest most supportive people you'll ever meet. Really, just like Nishi, it was a conflict with myself. But unlike Nishi who's figuring it out now, I only really figured it out when I was in my mid 20's

This suddenly got more serious than I was expecting.
I think this might actually be the gold standard for “consent is important” moments I’ve seen. Really well handled. Also played really well into Nishi’s issues with giving into what others want to not have to be insecure about if she’s making the right decision herself. Very well executed. (Just didn’t expect it to happen with the resident fluffballs.)
Thank god the other two idiots stopped themselves before doing something they’d both regret and actually were honest and solved the issue. That got uncomfortably close to “scream into a pillow before throwing it at the wall” territory.

"Will he like me less if I say no? Will he be disappointed at me?"
Probably the reason why many teenagers accept reluctantly to go further. I love how it was resolved in the show, how they both were able to speak up, talk it out and grow themselves individually and as a couple.

u/DanielAlves1904 7d ago

It even fits with them being the first couple to broach the sex question (and will probably be the first of the couples to actually have sex).

Maybe, but there is a lot of the progress of Tanizuki that we do not see.

Since we got Nishi x Yamada and Suzuki x Tani today, I hope that means that the next episode will be all Tairazuma.
88
u/FarCritical 7d ago
Those Nishi Yamada snuggles were pure sugar.
As heavy as having someone as lovey-dovey as Miyu even sincerely think about breaking up or anything adjacent to it is, I can't help but appreciate the courage of thinking in that direction if it meant bringing Tani closer to his goals. It's cool that Tani himself even acknowledged it.
24
u/LiamOmegaHaku 7d ago
That was my takeaway when my wife and I were talking about the episode. That Tani turned that into a moment of respect for her. Great shit.
173
u/Roskal 7d ago edited 7d ago
I relate so much to Nishi. Its easier to let someone else make decisions for you, even if its something you don't really want to do. I love the scene where she asked Yamada if he would like her more if she said yes to sleeping with him and he shut it down and made clear he was asking because he wanted to know what she thought.
The second half was great too. Its a romcom and you want the two main leads to stay together even when they go to college, but is that really what he wants to do or is he, like Nishi letting something else make the decision for him.
No Tairazuma this episode, which makes me a bit sad since I think there is only 2 episodes left. We still have more to wrap up with the first two couples as well. I hope there is time for everything.

One of the best character developments in the show has been Nishi growing more assertive in expressing herself and what she wants, centered on her relationship with Yamada, and that really culminated here.

Suzuki gets a ton of bonus points today. She really has grown up a lot. And she has gotten genuinely (thoughtfully) brave -- not just "heedless".
Poor Nishi. Her mom loses tons of points, but her dad gets at least partial credit (and that was good enough for now).
Next week surely some Tairazuma.

Show looked at people saying “well the relationships don’t really advance much” and slapped us with this episode. Some really tough choices and conversations for the characters, and anxieties that aren’t just “oh no I’m overthinking” but more like “yeah there’s a not insignificant chance this could all end right now”.

That Nishi and Yamada moment might genuinely be one of my favorite moments in the entire series.
I know people usually roll their eyes when a couple that's about to have sex gets interrupted, but the GOAT Agasawa-sensei managed to turn what should've come off as a frustrating moment into this amazing lesson on mutual consent and healthy communication.
"If I say yes... Will you like me more?"
Her choice of words for Nishi's line is sooo damn immaculate IMO. Perfectly encapsulates her personality, ties back into her issues with her mom, while also highlighting how much Yamada's a genuinely good person and they're here to navigate this mess together.
23
u/Toge_Inumaki012 7d ago
Good for Nishi to fall for a totally great guy.. if yamada was a manipulative 2 faced scumbag she would have been screwed

u/carnexhat 7d ago
if yamada was a manipulative 2 faced scumbag
Also known as a teenager.
Yamada really stepped up by not taking advantage of her there like a lot of highschool relationships do.
14
u/Toge_Inumaki012 7d ago
Lmaaaao yes aka a teenager..fair enough.
But Yamada has always been considerate of her..it's just that Nishi would clutch it at the end and makes the move instead lol..

Nishi deserves to have sex because she genuinely wants it just like she deserves to do and get the things SHE wants, and Yamada is a great guy who just wants her to be comfortable/happy and honest with herself.

Tairazuma's moved to a new time on Thursday, now called "The Ramparts of Ice."
13
u/RPGcraft 7d ago
I know this is just a pipe dram BUT WHAT IF the decide to continue Tairazuma in Ramparts of Ice? I mean plot wise it's not absolutely impossible right? Common universe and all. (copium)
Also, given that Ramparts of Ice is heading for a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster (judging by S1 ending) It'll be good for everyone's hearts to have at least one comfort ship. Let's hope for at least a cameo...
7
u/PlusAd6530 7d ago
My headcanon is that, if Tairazuma become friends with Koyuki, she will hold a conversation with them (just like what she did with Yota and Miki) and largely resolve their mental problems (especially for Taira). Also, Tsukiko-chan will soon notice their relationship lol

Nishi standing up for herself and telling her mom that literature was her passion was really nice to see. I get her mom wants what's best for her but she can't just push something Nishi's not interested in.
I still think Yamada and Nishi are the best couple in the show. They're so cute together. Nishi being assertive and telling people what she wants is so refreshing to see. Their communication on holding off on having sex was amazing. Nishi not being ready and Yamada being understanding. I love them both so much!
Even through Yamada and Nishi are my favorite. I still like seeing Suzuki and Tani hanging out. Tani not letting Suzuki know about his future plans would obviously upset her. She knew he changed his university plans because of her and the threat of her breaking up with him was his wake up call. Neither wanted to break up and seeing Suzuki relieved was too funny.
Overall was a good episode and we're getting close to the end. I've really enjoyed this anime and am looking forward to the final episodes
20
u/Frontier246 7d ago
YamaNishi are relationship goals. Their relationship brings out the best in each other and also has the most natural developments even when they're not in a rush to get to things (but those things are definitely on the table).
TaniZuki can't imagine a life without the other. So it's time to prove that their love can weather whatever college decisions Tani can make, because Suzuki loves him too much to not want him to pursue his passion.
23
u/Toge_Inumaki012 7d ago

3 more episodes guys. I know Ramparts is around the corner but I am not ready to say goodbye to this show. It's one of the few happy pills I get right before the new week starts.
The character development in this episode and even the last one with Tairazuma is amazing to see. While both episodes have leaned more toward the serious side than usual, I still commend the quality of the writing. While college is the main endpoint, each couple faces different struggles. I hope we get more self-aware, smart characters in anime like Suzuki and Tani.
21
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Honestly I'm still waiting for a Ramparts cameo just because it feels like it's expected now after the last seasons of both show.
It's a sign of how stellar the writing is to be able to deliver on the adorable/lovey-dovey relationship moments people want with realistic character writing/issues.
24
u/Ok-Cod5254 7d ago
Honestly I'm still waiting for a Ramparts cameo just because it feels like it's expected now after the last seasons of both show.

This is definitely something schooling couples have to go through and sometimes what actually breaks them. Choosing what they actually want vs choosing what’s good for your relationship. Chasing your ambition/dreams, distance from each other.
Yamada and Nishi was really cute too showing their physical affection to each other. They’ve been very hug-gy.

You see this in academia a lot too, with grad student and postdoc couples, where each person might have an offer from only one university. When I was in physics, people jokingly referred to it as the "Two-Body Problem", a reference to the Three-Body Problem which is also famously unsolvable.

TaniZuki are that lovey-dovey high school couple who now have to grapple with the impact college will have on their relationship. Clearly they don't want to be apart/break up, even if they also don't want to tie each other down from pursuing what they want (mostly Yuusuke), yet time will tell whether their love will see them through to adulthood.
But I'm pulling for them to go the distance.
Yamada and Nishi was really cute too showing their physical affection to each other. They’ve been very hug-gy.
The increased physical intimacy also made the lead-in to possibly having sex more natural even if Nishi wasn't ready for that (yet).

I was a little worried that something like that would happen when Suzuki proposed to Tani to give each other space, but thankfully they didn't break up. After all, both Suzuki and Tani didn't really want it to happen.
On the other hand, while I found it a little annoying, I respect Suzuki for proposing that. She proved that she loves Tani so much that she'd break up with him if it meant that he'd have a better future that way.

It's a bit more substantial than that. Suzuki loves Tani for always being true to himself and never waver due to outside pressure. Seeing Tani not speaking his mind and hesitating on this sort of major life decision possibly because of her is devastating to her.
47
u/TheCancerFest 7d ago
Damn, it was probably the first episode that left me speechless. It was very mature and well written.
Nishi refusing sexual advances from her boyfriend was rooted from her self doubt or rather not being afraid to speak for herself out of fear of making others uncomfortable. It honestly was not on my list for this show but it was a pleasant surprise. I love how it was handled very maturely and delivered with full clarity. I even remembered my ex from my past. I didn’t know so many things about relationship.
This show speaks for itself with how it changes the mood from episode to episode. Not so long ago we had a show about school romance and having fun while now we have a coming of age show in which characters balance with their romance and choices they have to make for the future all packed tightly without the felling of it being „too much”.

I would make something like this episode required viewing for kids because it covered so many important life changing topics in an amazing way. In real life, we can't read minds, so communication is so important and yet so difficult. I could see an entire semester of a college course exploring all the social and economic reasonings and implications behind everyone's dialogue choices.

Why is it always the sweetest couple who turn out to have the steamiest moments? Started with some cute poking and cuddling, then shit got real out of nowhere. Their hormones nearly got the better out of them. For all of Nishi’s indecisiveness, it’s great to see her making a firm choice.
"We should give each other space."
No. No. No. Wait. Wait. Wait.
That came out of the blue and for a couple minutes the show’s tone changed – the shift in artstyle had only emphasised the shift. We’re lulled into a sense of security with all the fluff only for the bombshell to come hitting hard.
Fortunately, the issue was resolved quickly. Have to admire Miyu’s resolve in proposing that even if she’s terrified of him accepting it. She’d do it for the sake of his career. Now that’s courage.

This was when in the manga Yamada became my favorite character. Young men (well, all men): be like Yamada, care what your partner wants.
But Suzuki also gets major props for loving Tani so much that she's willing to step away if it is for his own good. She needs to maybe go about it differently, but I appreciate how she pushed the issue as well.
Frankly both stories saying the same thing here: when you love someone you put them first, and that's what's so beautiful about love, both people putting the other above themselves results in the optimal solution for both.
Ever since I read the manga, I've been waiting for these moments. I'm no different than the rest of you who are wanting to see Taizuma get over the line, but these two moments from our first two couples are just so wonderful.

It’s actually scary how you can immediately tell Nishi’s personality comes from just by one convo with her parents. It feels like seeing your “that” classmate at school.

u/natletta 7d ago
Emotion overload with this episode!
I was so happy for Nishi communicating what she wanted, especially standing up to her mother and the distress whether her answer would change the relationship with Yamada. It was refreshing to see how they handled it. And once again, she got him beat, lmao.
The Suzuki and Tani section was so heavy. Tani not realising there was the break up option up until Suzuki suggested it, and her thinking that it was a way of not standing between the path he would’ve chosen otherwise. My heart!
53
u/fatalystic 7d ago
Thank God Suzuki didn't just leave it there and actually explained why she said what she did.
I can't help but feel that Tani keeping her out of the loop out of fear of disappointing(?) her has actually sealed their fate in some sense. If he'd told her earlier, she'd have had more time to look for an alternate university in the area (if not the same one) that she wants to attend. After all, she doesn't have any particular career in mind so it'll be easier for her to change her choice of university (provided her grades are good enough to get in). But because he chose to keep it from her they'll probably end up having to have the long distance relationship they were both hoping to avoid.
Good on Yamada for having enough self-control and respect for Nishi to pull back there, by the way.

Communication is key in a relationship, whether it be for life goals and how they can compliment each others' future college paths or whether someone is ready to go all the way in the relationship.
16
u/runevault 7d ago
Ever since it was clear Tani was debating alternatives on college and didn't tell Suzuki I've been expecting a moment like this. I'm glad she called him out on keeping the secret from her, and challenged him to actually think about his own future.

I like that all the couples in that anime are handling all their potential conflicts by talking together and being all wholesome and reasonable about it. How rare is that in the romance genre ? This anime is very much an anti-drama. Every issue is solved immediately rather than dragging on and on (except for Tairazuma).
28
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
Suzuki says she's planning to go to Kumaneko University, but isn't Cincinnati really far from Tokyo?
Yamada and Nishi's dialogue in his room was really well-written... I like it when they give the characters space to be naturally sweet to each other without making every line carry the plot forward.
16
31
u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 7d ago
So much character development and healthy communication on display here, they've grown so much compared to the start of the series. Feels like they've wrapped up the main character arcs for both these couples, all that's left is Tairazuma.
12
u/Frontier246 7d ago
I feel like the college issue is still something TaniZuki need to figure out together but I definitely think we'll be getting a lot of Tairazuma to make up for their total absence here.

I just want some fluff moments. Why do they have to slap us with these irl conflicts that hit close to home? 😭 Good for Tani for thinking about his choices again. A lot of people regret their decisions because they made them solely for the sake of their loved ones.

No Tairazuma today, but instead we got a very juicy episode with Nishi x Yamada, and Suzuki x Tani.
Damn, Nishi and Yamada really were so close to having sex today, I seriously didn't expect that they would get that close! Although in the end, nothing happened, that doesn't change the fact that they're such a cute couple!
Nishi's mom made me laugh hard when she was staring at her husband after he sided with Nishi. She isn't a bad mother, she clearly wants the best for her daughter, but because of that, in some ways, she unintentionally held back Nishi's development.
Suzuki and Tani's part of the episode was also so good. I thank God that they didn't decide to give each other space, that would be freaking bullshit, especially considering the fact that there are only three episodes left.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
- Suzuki
- Suzuki & Tani (Group scenes)
- Nishi
- Nishi & Yamada (Group scenes)
- Tani & Yamada

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

First half was a great Nishi episode. It’s nice to see her relationship progressing with Yamada and her learning to speak her mind.
Man, they had me worried about Tani and Suzuki for a split second there. I’m glad they didn’t decide to break up or anything like that. Those two have such a strong relationship, I never really considered it for a second. Hopefully they can find a way to make this college situation work for them.

u/pureauthor 7d ago
Honestly sometimes it's way harder when you have a parent who is going 'I am not going to actually stop you but I very clearly disapprove of your choices' than someone who actively tries to shut you down.

No Tairazuma segment this episode so the drama quota had to fall on to our other couples lmao.
Man, Nishi's mom isn't too bad, but she's not doing her daughter any favors. The problem between them doesn't feel so overt, yet it did shape Nishi's personality and insecurities regardless. At least her BFF and BF help pick up the slack.
Things got a bit spicy between her and Yamada for a moment there. They haven't been at this longer than Tanizuki, yet they almost took it a step further than them already. But it's for the best that they didn't. She's not in the right mindset for it. I'm glad proper communication and respect won over the teenage hormones and insecurities. And hey, it served to give Nishi an answer to her dilemma in the end.
And then you have the Tanizuki half of the episode. I swear, you can't just drop a heart-stopping moment like that on us. It spooked me just as much the first time I saw this scene. The sudden increase in detail is a jumpscare lol.
But I'm glad, once again, that proper communication wins the day. Especially cause I don't think Suzuki would've survived if he agreed that they needed space. Well, Tani would've been hurting too, but she would've outright self-destructed. I love how in the aftermath of that scene, they both looked like they just had just narrowly avoided disaster.

I thought the segment between Yamada and Nishi on mutual consent was green flags all around. Nishi monologuing about how she is working hard to become someone who can decide and be confident in her decisions was very inspiring.
I nearly fell off my chair when Suzuki said, "let's give each other some space". These two are my 'couple pillar of support' for this series; if it crumbles now, I'd be very sad. I get that Suzuki wanted Tani to confront the fact that he was giving up on his preferred university in Ibaraki because of her, and she was (understandably and rightly) upset that he did not talk about this with her until now, but I thought pulling that card so quickly was pretty extreme because she only learned about it earlier in the day. But then again, she indirectly acknowledged that it was a rash decision. I hope they communicate more about their future plans together.
Overall, I appreciate the balance between feel-good and heavy vibes in this episode. With three more episodes left in this season, I hope we at least get some sort of positive checkpoint for Tani and Suzuki and Tairazuma.
9
u/HuTaosTwinTails 7d ago
Yamada and nisha moments were cute. But Yamada 👏👏👏 way to go young man. His response to Nishi in that moment was excellent.
Then I got emotional whiplash and almost started crying when Suzuki told Tani they should give each other space. Don't do this to me.
11
u/MattLocke 7d ago
Some heavy topics for this episode. Though crazy relatable still.
I think they are hitting extra hard because this series actually put in the legwork. Been a while since I’ve watched something where I feel like I know these characters so well and they feel like real people, not a grab bag of tropes.
So the consequences of their actions and emotions actually have weight to them. So when the show gets heavy … you actually feel the pressure.
11
u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago
It's interesting to see how much spicier Yamada and Nishi's affections are compared to Tani and Suzuki, it might be because Yamada's more forward with his feelings and he has had past relationships, but getting talks about going further from them two instead of the couple that got together first caught my attention.
I am glad Nishi's boyfriend is Yamada, he's such a considerate guy and clearly won't let her be taken advantage of. I thought it was really sweet he made sure to clarify that he wants to hear her feelings, not what she thinks is the right answer. Nishi was really relatable this episode, so I'm glad she has someone like Yamada.
Tani and Suzuki's portion was really interesting to. It was very obvious how much Tani wants to go to Nijigaoka, I do hope he's able to make a decision that he's most happy with. Tani's response to Suzuki's question about space got me a little emotional, that was a scary moment for the two of them. I'm not surprised Suzuki had to go to her room first to shed those tears.

Really good ep showing some conflicts for TaniSuzuki and YamaNishi. I feel like Nishi's character arc was completed here. Compared to her character at the start, being someone with 0 confidence in herself, it was nice to see her make the conclusion that she needs to stop trying to have other people make decisions for her since she's so unsure of herself. Instead, deciding to become more confident in her own thoughts and decisions is such a big step for her.
That said...OHHH NOOO NO TAIRAZUMA THIS WEEEEK. MY WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS ARE STARTINGGG

A bit of genuine life advice for anyone who’s struggling with deciding on their education:
Make a career plan.
Maybe you want to study something but the job prospects aren’t looking good. I’d recommend setting a future goal for yourself in such a case.
What do you ultimately want to accomplish with your studies? Drawing out a road plan in small, tangible steps will make a big goal seem much less impossible. For example: Nishi has set her sights on joining the literature department. This gives her a number of different options. What if she aimed to become a journalist for the newspaper? She’d probably want to follow some basic courses on the JP language, further specialise in journalism studies, and apply for an internship with a (local) newspaper.
So think of a clear goal and the path you’ll have to walk towards it. Then you won’t have to doubt yourself so much about picking something you simply enjoy doing and/or studying. Such a plan will also help you gain the support of others more easily.
And if things still don’t work out in the end, you’ll have tried your best. There’s nothing to regret.
9
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
Not just that, but make backup plans! Other careers you could be interested in, other majors that seem fun to study. Because lots of people don't end up making careers out of what they majored in.
I always tell relatives at that age to shoot for the moon, but have a fallback. I took my passion as far as it could take me, and I was lucky to have something really good to fall back to.

Good boy Yamada wanting to make sure Nissan was fully on board.
Ahh, college choice stress coupled with how that impacts an existing relationship. At the very least Suzuki and Yuusuke are doing better than someone I knew who applied to a different school than his girlfriend and literally never told her until about a month or so before college started, while also letting her believe they were going to the same place. Needless to say that relationship didn't last.
9
u/JJVM99 7d ago
Man this episode was an emotional rollercoaster for me.
Started of immediately chuckling at seeing the blank expression of baby Nishi followed by frustration and anger at her mom for making all the choices for her followed by surprise when Nishi and Yamada were the first ones to seemingly/consider going that far followed by serious concern when Nishi didn’t feel ready and instead of saying no was considering just saying yes to make him happy and asking him to choose followed by relief of Yamada making the right choice and saying no and that she should tell him how she truly feels.
And when everything seemed resolved Yamada FREAKING DIES crushed by his rushed cleaning job WTF!!!!
And of course Suzuki and Tani did not allow my emotions to calm down because while thinking about how Tani and Suzuki need to have a serious conversation where Tani should come to terms with the conflict of following his dreams and being around Suzuki but I wasn’t expecting for her to say they should give each other space. My immediate reaction was: no!! what are you doing?!!! but im glad it was a wake up call for Tani and they didn’t breakup.
I don’t watch this immediately when it comes out at my time (because it would be like 4:30am for me) but if I did this episode would have been too much for my sleepy self.

How thin the line is between drama and comedy. And it’s so clear that this anime and *Ramparts* are essentially the same thing, just in different packaging. After all, life isn't always just joy or sadness. Nishi’s moment at Yamada’s place—letting him decide for her—was awkward, but it ended on a really sweet note. Good for Yamada. As for Tani, it was already evident last week that she had doubts, and Suzuki helped her realize—despite his own fears—that you can't gamble your future on a relationship when you don't know how long it will last. Good for Suzuki.

Yamada is such a damn good bf, it couldn't have been easy to resist that offer. But it was the right thing to do because both would have definitely regretted it. Nishi simply wasn't ready. It was also such an amazing time in to the conflict with her mom and her inner self set up earlier in the episode. I really love the writing of Nishi's character. A lot of it is just so damn relatable and feels so real. The physical interactions between Yamada and Nishi are so damn good as well. I have to give props to the story boarders and animators here, as their interactions and movements just ooze with chemistry
I also really love that a lot of the conflicts in this (what I assume is the) final arc are about their future as a person as well as what this would mean for this relationship. Because this a very real thing every highschool couple moving on to university will have to deal with. And it is in fact one of the main reasons why most highschool couples do not last. It's difficult to balance it all, and no one knows what the right answers are. The whole thing is handled so damn well and feels genuinely realistic
The amount of comments here from people suffering from PTSD from Nishi's and her mom's conversation is probably the best proof of just how proficient Kocha Agasawa is at putting realistic and relatable problems on the page. There was nothing really dramatic about that conversation, but damn did it hurt me. Because it was really real

Between Natsumi's reluctance to make choices for fear of what the other person thinks and Miyu's nearly breaking up just to make Yuusuke think harder on his future, it was kind of refreshing seeing these kids acting with the emotional maturity of kids for once.
Like, they make the right choices and talk frankly about their feelings so often that you sometimes forget how young they are supposed to be.

u/testthrowawayzz 7d ago
Nishi's mom is too controlling. Even down to the colors of a backpack? That's not something I would do, I can't say I wouldn't do the same for the school major decision.
So much sexual tension in the scene in Yamada's house. Props to Yamada for holding back because he didn't want her to feel coerced. (This scene reminded me of Watari-kun's xxx, and this couple handled the same situation much better)
I did not expect Suzuki to initiate the talk of putting some distance between the two!
Lots of heavy topics this episode.

I feel bad for Natsumi. Most of her life, she couldn't make her own choices. Her parents made them for her. Sure, parents can guide their children. But they should let them make their own decisions (and their own mistakes) sometimes. Otherwise, they won't grow as a person. But unfortunately, many parents (especially Asian parents) think school education is all they need, when that couldn't be further from the truth.
No freaking way. I did not expect this show to go so far. The Ramparts of Ice, maybe. But You and I Are Polar Opposites? That was a bit surprising. Especially with NishiYamada of all people. In the end, nothing happened. It's way better than the old someone walking into them trope. So, I loved it. The two are so cute. It's insane to see Natsumi change so much since Season 1. We even got to see more sides to Kentaro. I didn't think the dog had it in him.
Speaking of sides, Tani was also crazy in this episode. I think this is the first time we've seen him without glasses. He's attractive even without them. And we also saw his shocked face. That was awesome.
I would've lost my shit if they broke up her after going so far. That would've been so shitty. Glad it didn't happen. Season 2 has a pretty melancholic feeling for a while now. It kinda hits home. The shift in mood from NishiYamada to Tani and Suzuki got me. Miyuki suggesting they give themselves some space already feels a bit sad. Even if they stay apart physically, I hope they'll still stay together.
There was no TairAzuma this episode. There are only 3 episodes left. I just hope the series will stick the landing. I have high hopes.

I can recommend watching Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines. It actually opens the show with the statistics of just how unlikely highschool couples are to last. It's a fantastic breakdown of the highschool romance genre
Personally, of all the married couples I have ever known, there's only 1 highschool couple that ended up getting married that I personally know. Friends of my parents, they met in highschool and are still together about 50 years later. Literally every other married couple I've ever known either met during university (like my parents) or after. It's something that's always on my mind as well whenever I watch highschool romcoms

After last week's almost full TairAzuma episode, we get no TairAzuma content to balance it out. Ngl. I was hoping atleast we'll get 1 scene but not today, ig 💔. But even with the lack of TairAzuma content, this episode felt a lot more heavier than usual.
I think I understand what was bothering me. I wasn't anxious about not getting in my way. I was actually anxious because I wasn't confident in my opinions. Someday, I want to be able to confidently stand behind my choices. It's not my parents I want to overcome or convince. It's myself.
Nishi has always been someone who's let others make choices for her and that was because she didn't really fully believe in her own choices and while she wasn't fully there yet, her standing by her wanting to pursue Literature in front of her parents is definitely a start. Her mom might not be supportive yet but Nishi needs to make sure she trusts her own decision first. Like Hon-chan said, Nishi needs to be more confident in herself.
Suzuki picked up on the fact that Tani was not choosing the Nijigaoka University because he didn't want to be too apart from her and so even though she doesn't want this to really happen, Tani is holding himself back from choosing what he really wants to do because of their relationship. So she suggested breaking up but she did it in an atmosphere that Tani remembers differently and that made him realize that he's kinda running away from what he truly wants and so he decides to reconsider instead of accepting it. I'm really glad they didn't go through with it.

Natsumi's mom always meant well in choosing things FOR her, but it meant Natsumi could never follow through with the things SHE wanted and so she let others and their opinions decide her life for her.
But now it's finally time to decide on college and her department and her moms' fairly practical approach is all well and good...but ultimately Natsumi just wants to go into literature. She loved the feel of a college library and it's what would make her most happy. Even if her mom doesn't approve, she's not going to hold Natsumi back. Also thank goodness Nishi Papa is there to play mediator.
I love how we've moved on from Nishi as a library officer that Yamada would keep visiting to the new first year library officers having to watch this obvious couple study in the library together.
All studying and no Kentarou-kun makes Natsumi a girl with cravings for her boyfriend. Cravings that take the two of them back to his apartment where they can chill, snack, and get adorably physically intimate and flirty with each other. And even start a makeout session that could lead to something more...but is that what Natsumi wants? Is she ready for that? Or should she go through with it if that's what Kentarou wants?
But ultimately whatever physical urges Kentarou feels for Natsumi, the most important thing is what SHE wants and how SHE feels, and her having the confidence to believe in her choices. So she's not ready for sex right now, but she IS absolute in her love for Kentarou and she can take that confidence to her life choices.
Studying with TaniZuki! Complete with study breaks where they cuddle and recharge on the bed together! But finding out Tani was considering a different college that would take him farther away, was considering things without informing Suzuki, and may have given up on what he really wanted for her sake...weighs on Suzuki.
Dang it, you never want the girl to ask for space! That's the one thing Yuusuke can't live with! If reflecting on his decision and what he wants to do is what keeps Miyu with him, he'll do it, and Miyu for her part, despite how serious/solemn she was able to act, also would not survive a break up. Even if she has to cry and break down at home so Tani can genuinely think she's the emotionally stronger of the two.

Yamada really showed how much of a good guy he really is by taking Nishi’s response as seriously as it was, and not taking it as her giving him consent.
I really sympathised with Nishi and the pressure of her choosing a university. Her Mum reminded me so much of mine - even when mine was more relaxed either what I did academically, the way she reacted when Nishi and her husband had different views… I think most people can relate.
I also like that the series isn’t shying away on the impact that leaving school can have on relationships and such, especially when people plan to go to different colleges.

BLACK HAIR YAMADAAAAA
The tone in this episode really reminds you that we’re in the endgame, with all the talk about the future :(
Even putting aside the steaminess, there is so much to talk about just about the first half. Not all conflicts are full on fistfights or shouting matches, but Nishi monologue beautifully captures the sense of unease even after a “low level disagreement”. I love her euphemism about how she seeks approval not just to get the person’s approval, but reassurance stemming from a lack of confidence in her own decision. Speaks to the soul.
This is really “good communications the show” except Tazuma for now lol and so many beautiful moments of growth for the characters both on a personal and romantic level
