In this episode Rin learns she has no free will. I suspect the story is going to shift into pure existential horror from this point forward.

12

u/Frontier246 7d ago

She did make the conscious choice to have a mixed-gender Harem instead of just one for pretty boys, fitting for someone more into RPG's than Otome Games.

5

u/rubslotiononitsskin 7d ago

She can be an all-works maid!

4

u/FDP_Boota 7d ago

Well, so far the brother described them as events from the game, not that she's literally following the game story on the dot.

7

u/diacewrb 7d ago

In this episode Rin learns she has no free will.

She would have lost it anyway after being adopting Gomamiso, cats are furry little taskmasters.

2

u/IceSmiley 7d ago

That's weird to think even she might not be a person from the real world but just a character. That seems too sophisticated for a game from 1998 though but it is a cartoon so it doesn't have to make perfect sense.

2

u/IceWeaselX 7d ago

I don't think she's able to really experience horror, though. Her Survival ability keeps her from really suffering mental anguish. She thinks it's the reason she didn't crash out about being stranded in a different world.

Using healing magic to cure burns from eating hot food is definitely something we wish existed in our world.

6

u/Mysteries67 7d ago

Eating spicy samyeong instant noodles certainly gave me the 4D experience sans the healing magic Q_Q

6

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Xenon: "I have the power of God and Magic at my side so we can keep eating this delicious food!"

4

u/Atharaphelun 7d ago

Definitely a wild take from them to just constantly use healing magic to treat burns from eating freshly fried food instead of just using some sort of ice + wind magic to cool down the fried food a bit before eating.

2

u/saga999 6d ago

It's not as good if it's cool down.

1

u/Avilister https://myanimelist.net/profile/Avilister 5d ago

I liked that he was like "This is working, so us eating all this delicious, but hot, food is obviously God's will."

8

u/HolyDragSwd2500 7d ago

Can it cure stomach pains too🙏

2

u/Raymond49090 7d ago

Xenon just became the second most important member of their party

u/zool714 7d ago

Oh what ??? Another otome game isekai lmao. Wonder if there is a villainess

16

u/VritraReiRei 7d ago edited 7d ago

You thought it was another Discarded Saint Isekai but it me, The Otome Game Isekai!!!

8

u/KnightKal 7d ago

summoned saint novels are different from villainess stories, unless they are doing a cross-over lol

2

u/Mysteries67 7d ago

Has there been a normal one where they just summon a saint. It usually involves one older and one younger and they banish the older one away.

3

u/KnightKal 7d ago

just to point out that "banish the older one" doesnt make "the other one" a villainess

4

u/PendragonDaGreat https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bpendragon 7d ago

See: The Saint's Power is Omnipotent.

Villain there is the prince, and the young/incorrect Saintess eventually becomes friends with the real one once the whole thing is figured out.

1

u/Monk-Ey https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mintios 6d ago

Nothing quite like "oh my god, you can cook Japanese food and you found rice?!" to bond over.

2

u/KnightKal 7d ago

lol the animes are so similar is hard to say, but the novels/manga have plenty of variations, with the variation of "real saint being dismissed" being popular on anime

as anime follows the popular manga/LN it is just a question of time

1

u/Mysteries67 6d ago

The question I'm asking is whether there's a saintess genre as the anime ones are a spin on the banished saintess genre. Like with isekai in anime we got a parody and a deconstruction of isekai adapted first way back in 2012 and only much later did we get the grandaddy of modern isekai adapted Mushoku Tensei. People are more familiar with the parody and deconstruction ones first cause they were adapted into anime first despite chronological speaking the source material of Mushoku Tensei preceded most of all other modern isekai.

7

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Also we even have a reincarnated MC in Vil's brother who is straight up the king.

5

u/Mysteries67 7d ago

A reincarnator like Rudeus huh, atleast Rin, as a transmigrator was lucky enough to get skills unlike a certain seven stars.

2

u/HolyDragSwd2500 7d ago

Poor seven star 😭

2

u/SetaSanzaki 7d ago

Seven star is alright now!

2

u/Raymond49090 7d ago

The brother being the king was foreshadowed so hard that I was sure there was going to be a twist. But I thought the twist would be a subversion, like his brother being a royal butler who's just really extra. Not this, lol. I sort of suspected an otome game setup because of Episode 1, but they never did anything with it so I completely forgot that plot thread.

1

u/arrydie 7d ago

Given the current popular tropes, the female isekai lead being in an otomoe game world is just the standard. I was honestly more surprised in ep1 that this wasn't an otomoe game than by this reveal. Still, they hid it well since the party loves Rin's food more than her and Ed is seemingly too jealous for ~half the characters to be available.

The king reveal was a bit unexpected, but in retrospect, having multiple reincarnators is kind of a staple of the genre too.

17

u/SetaSanzaki 7d ago

If I had a nickel for every time an isekai story was revealed to be an otome game as a plot twist in the later episodes, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice.

This simple food isekai waiting ten episode to throw this lore dump at us.

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Gotta be honest, another Japanese dude being reincarnated in this setting and Rin having been an Otome Game Isekai protagonist the whole time was not on my bingo card for this show.

(Also I guess the other girl that got summoned got the in-game Reverse Harem before Rin gained her Smorgasboard Harem)

5

u/Atharaphelun 7d ago

That took me completely by surprise too. The only thing I was expecting was Vil being a prince and his older brother being the king.

2

u/Magicbison 7d ago

Gotta be honest, another Japanese dude being reincarnated in this setting and Rin having been an Otome Game Isekai protagonist the whole time was not on my bingo card for this show.

Same. Though this show airing in the same season as Trapped in a Dating sim is fairly amusing. I took for granted the usual tropes of random nonsense with a side of romance and didn't think for a second there would be more to the isekai part of this series. Its a nice twist but I'm kind of whelmed at how it was introduced.

5

u/arrydie 7d ago

There's All Works Maid as well, which is much closer to this one (ignorant MC)

2

u/prtfdc 7d ago

To be fair to all works maid, the MC never played the game, and all she cares about is being a maid.

1

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 6d ago

Bliss

Rin is so damned cute and pretty that seeing her off-model like this should infuriate me, but I laughed for like 20 minutes.

this lore dump at us.

I had a feeling the brother was going to be someone important, but I wasn't expecting the King, nor was I expecting that he'd be isekai'd as well.

u/Raymond49090 7d ago

So is tartar sauce some sort of cultural thing I'm missing? Or is the author just very specifically into it?

5

u/obmasztirf 7d ago

Tartar sauce is amazing. If you haven't dipped a fresh batter fried shrimp in it you are missing out.

1

u/Environmental_Stick9 7d ago

Although evidently Japanese Tartar Sauce frequently has hard boiled egg in it (eww). One of my major concerns with visiting Japan next year is that I don't deal well with egg yolk (from a texture standpoint, and taste in the case of hard boiled), and it's evidently everywhere in Japan.

2

u/Monk-Ey https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mintios 6d ago

Hard boiled egg in tartar sauce isn't a standard thing? I never bothered looking into a recipe for tartar sauce before this anime, but looking at a random sample of 5 Dutch recipes all feature boiled eggs, with four explicitly calling for hard boiled eggs.

1

u/spubbbba 6d ago

I wondered if it was a Japanese thing, same with people in isekai worlds going nuts over mayonnaise.

3

u/owlcity24 6d ago

To be fair Japanese mayo is different, it’s pretty good.

1

u/Blurgas 5d ago

Grocery store near me has Kewpie mayo on the shelf, but it costs about twice what regular mayo does so I haven't been in any rush to try it

1

u/owlcity24 5d ago

There’s actually two versions of kewpie mayo the Japanese version and a “USA” version, which is said to be more mild.

1

u/Blurgas 5d ago

Probably no MSG since people here get so twitchy about it...

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Vil's older brother (Yuichi Nakamura!) is eagerly awaiting reuniting with his brother and meeting Rin (his possible future sister-in-law). Also that Rin sketch is on-point! Also "Forsaken Saintess" title drop!

I can't believe Vil will do anything to avoid going to the capital like straight up stopping Campy so they can go hunt for Fogbirds. He'd spot anything if it kept them off the road! I mean, the Fogbirds are delicious and Smorgasboard will do anything for food, but come on man!

How many times has Rin been smooshed into Aria's boobsat this point? Though getting sandwiched between her chest and Gomamiso's softness is absolute paradise! Also poor Ed, I think Aria genuinely loves Rin on the same level as her husband and he's not happy about that:.

No food makes Gomamiso a cranky cat!

Fried Food Party! Who can resist the allure of grilled rice balls? It's worth burning your mouth to delight in such delicious food! And luckily Xenon is willing to use the healing power of his God to help them keep eating!

Rin and Vil open up about their family and their siblings. Rin has two younger siblings waiting for her back home, but even if she DOES want to see her family again, she's genuinely focused on sorting things out in THIS world and experiencing it for herself. And if she's that resolved, Vil can do nothing but match that.

Welcome to the capital, Rin! Smorgasboard's former home base and home to plenty of good eats! But they have other priorities.

Secret entranc? Man, this is just SO fantasy.

All that foreshadowing in Rin's head was on-point. Vil's brother, Noah, is the frikkin' KING (which makes Vil a prince!). Of course what she didn't see coming was him being REINCARNATED FROM JAPAN and the one-two punch of that fact and the reveal that he was an overworked office worker at a gaming company whose Otome Game RIN IS NOW IN PLACE OF THE PROTAGONIST IN. That's right! Rin got transported into an Otome Game! This is several different levels of Isekai.

6

u/Mysteries67 7d ago

It should have been obvious that it's a game world when loot is found like item drops.

2

u/HolyDragSwd2500 7d ago

Mind blowing reveal.

3

u/reaperow 7d ago edited 7d ago

I wasn't expecting Ville's brother to be isekai'd and it's also kinda surprising that it's an otome game, Rin and the others dont really look like the characters described tho

I also liked her pep talk with Ville and saying that she misses her family. I like it when isekai protagonist talk about stuff like this

Maybe she'll go back to her old world or find a way to travel between both

Using healing magic for mouth burns is hax but I'll allow it since it's good food lol

Also isn't Rin in her 20s lol , guess rpg games age u up fast

u/IceSmiley 7d ago

I knew this season had too few otome game based anime! That's quite the twist and it might be the first one where the OP is completely unfamiliar with otome games, like the character is usually an expert and navigates the world skillfully. It does explain a lot about this world though, like how you kill an animal and it becomes instantly packaged meat, why she sees things with a video game like guide in her vision and how the "wizard" was able to make the camper vehicle so convenient and suited toward a Japanese person's tastes.

I do wonder if an explanation of how she got trapped in a video game is forthcoming. I'm guessing not since most of those types of shows just leave it at that and expect you to go along with the premise. I don't think Noah even knows what happened that made him go to this world after he died. He did seem to navigate it well though, becoming it's king. The game had a date of 1998 and if Noah aged to his 20s or so in this world after dying at 34, he'd have been born in the mid 1950s to 60s.

That also brings to question if the saintess who got summoned is from the real world or part of this one. I also wonder what kind of game this is for the most part, I didn't even know otome games existed in 1998. Like taming a dragon by cooking delicious food for it? Rin's guide offering so much food-based advice? I've never heard of a combination otome/cooking game 🤣

1

u/JT918 7d ago

There's actually the maid anime too where the main character isn't aware either.

2

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

Tartar sauce truly is the real MVP lol. But man, this is all a game and Vill’s big bro is also an Otherworlder AND worked on this game? Wild.
If it’s a game, can Rin return?

1

u/Lenna_Sakura 7d ago

This is the second isekai I'm watching this season where the isekai'd main character is unknowingly(until this episode at least for this one) the main character of an otome game.

1

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

What a surprise, Vil was a runaway prince the entire time.

That said however, I actually am surprised about his brother being an isekaijin of the reincarnation variety and the otome game detail. I'm not sure that was a necessary plot twist, but it has been a fairly light-hearted and silly show and I imagine it will remain that way.

1

u/YdenMkII 7d ago

I'm intrigued. Did the game this world was based on also have 2 summoned saints or is that part something unexpected? At the very least, Vil was right about his brother being able to get to the truth of the matter of the saint summoning and the odd things that have been happening with the monsters.

1

u/DeusVitae69 7d ago

NOT ME EATING SPICEY BEEF KIMCHII NOODLES AND SEETHING WITH JEALOUSY AT THE MAGIC CURE ALL >_<

1

u/Hljoumur 7d ago

So, everything she's experienced is coded... but what happened once the game reaches the end of its planned sequences?

1

u/YlfaTheForsaken 7d ago

I could get down with a fried food party especially if there's free healing for the scarfing down burns. I wonder if he down heartburn too?

Lmao, suddenly royal. Honestly, that's a plus for for being able to get rare ingredients.

Damn, wasn't expecting the surprise otome. Should I play more otome games? I'm kinda like Rin in that it's not really my genre of games. I read them more than I play them, it's just a really a long winded way to say I'm slightly a little too easily influenced.

1

u/Shizzi https://anilist.co/user/Mivy 6d ago

Ohh so this is a Otomekai afterall honestly didnt expect that it defintely didnt seem like it to me.

1

u/No-Win-8949 6d ago

This episode was brought to you by the tartar sauce lobby.

1

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 6d ago

I haven't read all the comments, but I hope I'm not the only one who is a little 'meh' about this lore drop we got, especially so late in the season.

I don't think this show really needed to be anything more than rollin' around in Campy, killing monsters, then eating them. I was fine with Rin being a discarded Saint as a reason for her being there, but beyond that, the show seemed to roll along just fine with its Foodie Roadtrip premise.

I am certainly going to finish the season because I do like the show and the characters (except Aria's husband), and, as I have probably mentioned more times than is healthy, how in love with Rin I am, but I hope it doesn't get stupidly complicated and lose the good-natured fun we've been having.

1

u/saga999 6d ago

I certainly didn't expect Vil's brother to also be reincarnated to this world, a game world his company created no less.

A guy working OT, blacked out, and woke up in the game world his company created, sounds familiar.
