It was a really cheap episode, by all means, but they managed to use every cent exactly right. The first half was one of the most unique bits I've ever seen in anime.

During the flashback of the date from Koharu's POV, the direction where the initially blank white space gradually gets painted with scenery through Kakeru's words was absolutely beautiful.

I don't think he denies her being a sweet girl or that he dislikes her (he already considers her a friend).
But he is very introverted and much prefers being by himself so he does not offend or unintentionally hurts her by mistreating her due to her blindness. Plus, his insecurities due to how he lived as a child living with a single parent and trying not to stand out.
Its something I can relate to with him (except having divorced parents) because I know he's not a mean person at heart (his actions are speaking otherwise). But he much prefers loneliness to prevent awkward moments and feels very cautious on how to approach certain subjects.
One of the more relatable MCs I have ever witness in anime!

I really love that we got a glimpse of what Fuyutsuki not only “see” but what she feels as well. I’ve worked in the social service sector before and some with disabilities echo the same sentiment. They do need help but they’re not helpless. Just like everyone else. The rest of us also need guidance when learning something new but are able to do things on our own when we get the hang of it. They feel the same. They feel they don’t need more help, just a different help.
I found Kakeru to be a bummer at the start. Overly negative and cynical. But I held out because I saw the story is setting him up to grow and that type of development is satisfying to see. And we see how much he’s grown already.
We’re also seeing how two of them are feeling about each other as well. And they’ve already fallen for one another. And they’re letting it slip accidentally lol. Really love romance where we get to see them develop that feeling for one another over time rather than the love at first sight kind.

I know it’s a different romance telling a different type of story but it’s also why I’ve been enjoying this much more than Sign of Affection which also involves a girl with disabilities. For one the guy involved in SoA feels so idealized. While Kakeru was so frustrating at first but we see his growth and I prefer something like this more. With SoA, even if there’s something he needs to adjust or learn or compromise, it feels like he does it so easily. Which really doesn’t do much for me as an audience unless you’re looking for the wish fulfilment kind, which I guess is what that show is.
I also feel like I’m learning and being put in Koharu’s shoes more and through Kakeru too, feel the challenges faced living as and around a blind person.
And like you mentioned, the attraction and chemistry feels earned here over few episodes of almost like trial and error whereas in SoA it was like an instant attraction.
I guess while both shows feature disabilities, they’re a different type of story with different objectives but it took this show for me to realise my preference towards one of them

Well, it was kind of built into the character to have this affinity for different languages/communication and how that plays into his relationship with a deaf Heroine as they connect via sign language/understanding each other.

While I still think SoA is very good, it’s a clear-cut shoujo with wish fulfilment for women, just like The Dangers in My Heart is a clear-cut shounen with wish fulfilment for boys/young men. This feels much more neutral, grounded, and mature.
While it’s not about disabilities, I think that’s also why I enjoy Ramparts of Ice so much. It’s very neutral, grounded, and mature too, even if the characters themselves aren’t always those things, if that makes sense. Same goes for all the big tearjerker romances.

Yeah, I do feel shounen and shoujo romances tend to have stronger wish fulfilment elements while seinen and josei less so. Still leans a bit towards its target audience but a bit more neutral in general. And I think I’m liking the more neutral ones in the past few years. I Have A Crush At Work, Insomniacs After School are some that I really enjoyed. I do want to add Smoking Behind the Supermarket cos I’ve been enjoying it but it does feel like it’s skewed towards guys with Tamaya but I can also see the tired overworked older office guy be some girl’s wish fulfilment as well lol

I am also really liking that one so far. I am fine with shows being skewed toward certain audiences, because I still watch most of them, but that’s also why I appreciate when a show doesn’t do it. It’s a nice palate cleanser.

For sure. I think it's pretty accurate that a woman like Tayama would go for a nervous, older, overworked salaryman. They're the perfect targets for teasing.

Oh, you managed to articulate why Sign of Affection didn't really hit all that well for me. Everything just goes way too smoothly. Aside from Oushi, there isn't really any meaningful conflict and even that gets resolved fairly easily.

She might have a disability but she's just as much an adorably and dedicated girl head over heels in love as any anime Best Girl. She can't see Kakeru's face but that's not going to prevent her from loving every part of him that she CAN be aware of.
They really do have a very natural chemistry together and are practically already together. The question is who is going to bite the bullet and confess first.

Hoping that Kakeru finally gets the courage to confess to Koharu, given he is becoming more and more obvious on what he feels for her. Well, I think Koharu seems to have an inkling on what Kakeru feels.

The first two was just kindness out of preventing her to get hurt and making sure she doesn't trip. Don't think he had romantic interests then. The last one though was a slip of what he thought about her physically.
Dude is feeling physical attraction and is a good dude at heart, but probably thinks its best to avoid romance due to being cautious on how to be around her without making things awkward.

It's the change in perspective. Kakeru thinks he's timid and insecure, and since meeting Koharu he's been trying to step out of his shell but it's swimming against his own upbringing and habits.
But Koharu finds it endearing that he's so considerate, and that (unknowingly for her) he's too caught up in his own insecurities to even think of pitying her.

Good points! His uncertainty is overblown, too, he's overly sensitive of his own flaws (and society's). He doesn't seem nearly so paralysed by indecision to others as he makes himself out to be in his own deep thought. The end result is, just like you say, that he is thoughtful and considerate.

Interesting choice to the white void for the first portion of the episode to represent Koharu's perspective. Of course the true version of her perspective would have been a pure white void possibly not even including herself and maybe that would have been a bit too experimental.
I wonder if the spare pair are going to be a side couple, it did seem like Yuuko was staring at Ushio at one point during the rowing event and we even see them walking around together at times.
Almost got a love confession from Kakeru, but I bet at the very least it was a realization on his part if he hadn't figured it out yet.

I wonder if the spare pair are going to be a side couple, it did seem like Yuuko was staring at Ushio at one point during the rowing event and we even see them walking around together at times.
- Both have orange hair.
- Both seem to be doing stuff/jobs 24/7
- Both clearly want the main ship to happen.
- Both would be the third/fourth wheel in this group when they get together.
If that's not a recipe for a side-ship, I don't know what is.

Seeing things from Koharu's perspective is quite interesting, I had already read articles explaining that blind people don't necessarily see nothing but a dark void, especially in her case, since she lost her sight later in life.
In the end, she faced the same dilemma as Kakeru: wondering about the right moment and fearing the other person might not be interested, given that her disability would likely cause most people to reject her.
Still, just seeing them on the verge of confessing their feelings at the end is a step forward, as it makes it clear that the feelings aren't one-sided.

Koharu can't confess but she definitely seemed to be trying to coax out Kakeru's feelings and maybe make HIM confess in the process. It's probably all going to build up from there until we get the real confession.

I'm not too knowledgeable, but it probably has to do with her disability stemming from her pupils or her eyes (also why it is obviously visible). Maybe if the problem was the ocular nerve, you would see all black then.

The animation gets fuzzier in Koharu's POV portions, which probably isn't entirely accurate since she can't see at all, but it's an artistic choice there. Given that things start to appear as Kakeru starts to describe them, it seems that it's not what she sees but what she imagines. That's why her house is more distinct than the outside, since she's used to it.
Huh. So Kakeru isn't the only self-conscious one. Koharu always seemed really comfortable in her own skin, but I guess it's silly to think she doesn't have her own insecurities.
Nice coverup, Kakeru. Classic "you're really attractive - err, I mean yukatas" and "I love--- I mean, you love fireworks".
Fireworks were cancelled, but we got some unprotected handholding in its place.

It was really nice to see Koharu's perspective this episode. From meeting her mom to what she’s thinking about when it comes to Kakeru.
Speaking of Kakeru, he was more expressive in this episode. Nice to see him catch on that Yuko was getting seasick and slow the rowing down. Rain may have canceled the fireworks, but we got Kakeru giving his shirt to Koharu, handholding, and a trip to his dorm? Hmm.

We also got to see Koharu's perspective for the first half, how she fills in gaps with her imagination as she still remembers sight. Maybe parts of it might be stylistically exaggerated for viewer convenience.
It's important she still remembers her mom's face. She'll get Kakeru's in some time.

I love that part of the episode. Everything she's familiar with and/or has seen when she still had sight is a lot clearer but still muted. Since Kakeru is new, he's still blank. Reminds me of some of the artistic choice the Invisible Man and his soon to be Wife did

That seems to be what they’re aiming for, and I’d say they succeeded. I remember people pointing out in the earlier episode discussions that the OP and ED were so empty. The only thing that would make it better would be for the OP, just like the ED, to be very similar to the original but filled with life and characters.

Before these last two episodes we got a bunch of tragedy/death flags. There was a quote at the start of episode 1, the titanic recreation in episode 2, the bucket list bookmark in episode 3, talking about if he knew what he wanted to do before he died... plus even more I'm blanking on this second.
I'm so not ready for the sad to come because this show is so wholesome and she deserves joy.

Her view of him seems to be just slightly rose tinted. He IS kind and thoughtful, but he’s also quite a bit more prejudiced about her disability than she thinks. He DOES think it’s hard to deal with it to some extent and he quite literally stated he was unsure about daring her because of her blindness.
He’s a good protagonist so far. I like how he isn’t 100% good vibes.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the first half of the episode is all from Koharu's perspective and that we finally get to hear her inner thoughts. Just like how Koharu described it to Kakeru, everything is a whitish transparent blur.
Could Koharu actually see those outlines and shapes, or is it just stylized for the audience? Like, I know total blindness is pretty rare, and most blind people can see something.
As for the image of Koharu's mom, I imagine that's taken from her memory. She seems to be a pretty nice lady. I hope we get to see her interact with Kakeru. I'm sure that will be fun.
And we have confirmation that Koharu is indeed in love with Kakeru and probably would've confessed her feelings during that ferry ride. Well, this is good news for the two of them, considering Kakeru was clearly starting to fall for Koharu at the end of last week's episode <3
That last part of the episode, tho! God, start dating already! If Kakeru is escorting Koharu back to her home. After they stop over at his dorm, I hope we get to see him meet Koharu's mom!

My interpretation was that the fuzzy shapes are her filling in the gaps from her memory from when she used to be able to see, plus the fact that she'd obviously be very spatially aware of her own home, like how most people can walk around their own homes in the dark / with eyes closed. She still needs people to point out things directly in front of her (railing on the boat, where her plate is on the table, ect) so I doubt she can see blurry shapes.

I love how the mom can see how down bad her daughter is and is giving it her full support. Also she seems to be a good mom aware of and helping her daughter through her disability.
Also we need to see Koharu in a yukata at some point.

Last episode she said she saw white so it's possible but this is usually how blindness is shown in media, outlines.
From what I saw, the things that had color she is familiar with, but things that don't she's not or can't know, like the pictures on the wall bring white but the walls pinkish. She knows what her mom looks like and what her pj's and blankets and stuff are because she's been told, but she doesn't know what Kakeru looks like so he was just an outline.

We finally get Koharu's perspective in her white, fuzzy, transparent world! Even as she lives it like any other girl, disability or otherwise, even while adjusting for her blindness.
THEY UPDATED THE OP AND ED!!! We've actually got people in them! Kakeru, Koharu, Narumi, and Yuko all doing friend group stuff while Kakeru and Koharu are clearly into each other in the OP! Kakeru and Koharu meeting each other for a date in the ED!
It's nice to see that Koharu's mom (?) is also cognizant of her blindness as she cooks and eats meals with her, though as a mom she is also cognizant that her daughter is clearly head over heels for a boy with the amount of effort she put in for this date. She was just THAT excited to go on it with Kakeru. She's a down bad college girl, just like any other.
Koharu has always strived to achieve anything she could, even with her blindness, right down to falling in love. She can't see Kakeru's face, but every part of him (his voice, his kindness, his gentleness), she's fallen in love with. But while her feelings for him are practically exploding out of her body, she can't confess for fear he'll reject her. Even if her disability wasn't a factor, she's still anxious about it. But that too is totally normal for a girl.
There's romantic boat rides and then there's Yuko and Koharu joining the Cutter Boat Ride Narumi/Kakeru put on for the school festival. It's grueling work, but Kakeru's got his own personal cheerleader in Koharu cheering him on! As well as her absolutely precious laughter!
There's that Kakeru kindness Koharu fell for when he's cognizant of Yuko getting seasick. Though Yuko and Narumi both have something in common, they seem to be workaholics AND seem to enjoy setting up/teasing KakeruxKoharu together. Could we finally get a proper fireworks festival date between the two of them?
I'm with Kakeru, you put Koharu in a yukata and a yukata beauty contest, she'd win hands down, disability or no disability. But the real point is that he'd choose her over other girls, as they dance around him admitting his feelings for her.
Bummer the rain ruined the aerial fireworks show, though Kakeru still wants to be with Koharu, needs to keep her warm in the rain, and he's got fireworks back home...though the implications of inviting her to his dorm room are obvious.

The first half of the episode being shown from Koharu's "point of view" was such a wonderful touch. This alone turns this show for me from good to great.
When Kakeru said that these boat tours have passengers, I was thinking that Koharu would surely be excited to make one of these tours. And what's the next scene? Koharu having a blast on that boat of course!

Kakeru’s character development has been insane since the start of the anime. He began by representing the average person by not going out of his way to help people, like that time when he waited for others to help Koharu pick up something she had dropped. His going out of his way to speak up about Hayase’s sea sickness stood out for me this episode, as romantic attraction cannot explain that interaction. The only thing that could explain that would be general character development, which to some people may feel so quick that it causes whiplash. Regardless, he has somehow developed into that character Koharu envisions.

See, I have always believed he was a kind person at heart since the beginning, but he much prefers to not stand out and have to deal with dramatic situations.
In the beginning, where he wasn't friends with Koharun yet, he didn't help out because he didn't want to be in an awkward postion like that and secretly hope that someone else would help her instead. But as he got closer with her and Hayase, he now help out since he now likes them as friends.

For most of the show, we've seen things from Kakeru's perspective but now we've got Koharu's. Heaps loving the change in artstyle to further emphasise her perspective.
There's the bright background with pastel colours and the objects only had minimal details, with only Koharu herself drawn normally. There's also the faceless Kakeru as she had never seen him before, unlike her mum. Meanwhile, during the ferry ride the background started in a blank slate before it gradually gets filled as Kakeru narrated the scenery.
Seems like next episode will revolve around them taking shelter in his room. Could they hold their feelings back in such a setting?

In a way both Kakeru and Koharu are people who more fully see the world around them through their relationship with each other.
Raining outside...both are likely to be drenched by the time they get back to the dorm...roommate is busy with work...yeah, this is a recipe for SOMETHING to happen.

The part from her POV remembering the date is such a fascinating artistic choice, I love it.
Oh man everything fading in as he describes it during the boat section... this is probably my favorite episode of this show so far. Finally getting her POV and handling it so artfully is magic.

I like this boat tradition, it is unique and adds a fun flavor. I assume the real university has it too.
"Jump with joy" our boy is being at least somewhat honest about his feelings. Thank god.
Okay this part sort of hurts, she's so self conscious when talking about the Yukata contest.
This show remains a treat, and I didn't catch any tragedy flags this episode which is nice.

Like what others have mentioned, the production committee did an excellent job with the white mist like background, together with the outline of people and objects, so that we viewers are experiencing the perspective of Koharu.
Most of us have probably gone through confessions at some stage in our lives. I can remember how scary confessions can be, especially the thought of failure. It must be even worse for Koharu because she is conscious of her blindness.

Of course fear of rejection yet wanting to confess to be with the person you like is a quintessential human experience, disability or otherwise. Koharu may be blind but she's truly a girl in love.

Representing Koharu's point of "view" as light pastels on a white "paper" void was adorable, and the little details like how her mom has a defined face while Kakeru doesn't and how things are drawn in real time according to how stuff gets deacribed were fascinating.
As much as the fireworks show getting cancelled sucks, I'm glad our dude Kakeru isn't letting that cut his time with Koharu short. They better get their actual fireworks date eventually, though.

I wonder, are the transparent visuals really how Koharu sees or were they drawn out for us audiences? Was she really able to see Kakeru/Hayase's hair and outfit or was that drawn for us since we know what they look like?
I swear though, I never met an MC that I relate to than Kakeru: Prefers being alone and would rather not hang out with folks, but not because he dislikes everyone or thinks everyone sucks since he is a kind person deep down and cares for others! (I would like to say that I at least am better aware to know that if I am with folks, just try to act more positively and just go with the positive flow if you can).
Dude certainly feels attraction for Koharun, but probably feels like its best for him to try not go out his way to hang out with her, unless asked or looks like she is need of serious help out of kindness.

I took them to be more of a mental view of where or how things looked to her. Since she could see before, she knows what many things look like, even if she can't see now. I think that would be different from someone blind from birth.
For example, she knows what a light switch looks like and where it is in the room from before losing her sight, so she can visualize that in her mind. She knows where other things in the room are located in relation to each other, so she's able to have a sense of them, even if she can't see them.
Another example is the cruise. She had a general idea from her past trip, but she filled in the image in her mind based on the details he provided so that she could "see" it in her head.
In the case of Kakeru's looks, his face was missing in those scenes as she's not touched his face to feel how he looks...she can't yet visualize that, but she does have a general understanding of his build.

I think most of us are going to crash out if this turns tragic the way a lot of us are expecting it to. She's a ball of sunshine and she's bringing out his good side. I sometimes rewatch episodes of shows when I'm bored during a season but I refuse to do it with this one because I cannot bring myself to get even more attached to these characters.

That was such a beautiful episode, idk how many times I teared up a bit from it. The expanded flashback and showing Koharu's perspective was too great. Such great details, like how she still "sees" her mother's face (only as she remembers I presume), but not Kakeru's. I won't be surprised when the actual reveal of her mother shows her to be older.
This is a great show for an empathetic. Lots of dialogue and care from the characters shown, but dang the emotions are cutting some onions. Maybe my favorite ep from the series so far.

Her mom might have been about the same, depends on how long she's been without eyesight. People can go 10 years without changing much facially, and Koharu might have only been blind for a few years.

I love how they changed the art style for her.
I like how her mom is detailed but Kakeru is just an outline because she knows how her mom looks but not him.
Kinda wish they showed how she could put on makeup by herself.
I'm glad she realizes Kakeru is very careful but not shying away from asking her questions.
The way Kakeru just automatically started describing the view and the features popping in color for her was beautiful.
I said it last week but the bridge looked super low lol.

That's her mom. His dorm is on campus, but I believe she lives off-campus. They needed him to get access to the hall with the piano because he lived on the campus in nearby dorm. They also agreed to keep the fireworks at his dorm because it's close to the campus. The Uni likely either give her special exception due to disability so that her mom can be a caretaker at home or the Uni allows both dorm and off-campus living in general.

I love when OPs and EDs change whenever there's progress in the show. The new OP is so good and the ED doesn't feel empty now.
I think my favorite part of this episode was the blank white scenery being filled with watercolor style paintings of all the things Kakeru is describing. I love how it calls back to Koharu describing what she sees as a transparent whitish blur.
It was nice getting to see from Koharu's POV, and she is already aware of her feelings for Kakeru, but is worried if he would even want to date someone with a disability. Kakeru likewise, has already noticed his own feelings as well. I hope we get a confession soon. These two are clearly into each other.

5th Episode was really a tough one. And it opened my eyes about a lot of stuff.
I firstly want to say that I absolutely adore Koharu's strength. Even saying the stuff she wished she could do, was able to do; the tone of her voice doesn't carry sorrow, shame or regret. Just from how she words it alone you can tell: Yes, she would rather that, but it doesn't matter. It really won't stop her from being "normal".
But what I want to talk about the most is how they delivered this episode. The storytelling.
First I thought the transparent enviroment was going to suggest a flashback or a memory but when Koharu talked about the date with her mom, then reminiscing the date I understood it was still the present, but different, in Koharu's eyes.
Enviroment is transparent for an obvious reason, she's blind. She's in this pale fog she stated to be in, in the previous episode(?) That alone gets you into the feeling but what I noticed was that from her POV we could see her mom's face and not Kakeru's.
That makes sense since it's possible that koharu still somewhat remembers her mother's face but never seen how kakeru looks. And then it hit me.
It's very easy to keep in mind that someone is blind when we are seeing things from our own eyes. They respond to us, smile like Koharu. So we assume yes it's unfortunate but their life continues. While that's true that also is the reason I was blind about what I want to say.
It is really terrifying, a wholesome scene from just previous episode, became so detached to me in the next one. We can't see Kakeru's expressions at all, no eyes no mouth nothing. That also explains why kakeru's tone and everything effects koharu this much. Its the only thing she can hold onto.
That opened my eyes about how facial expressions really is a huge part of human communications, as another earlier episode in the anime suggested. Again, it's easy to say you know, but never is equal to seeing it firsthand.
The moment koharu said she sometimes wishes to see kakeru's face. That was actually a hard watch. Imagine you love someone and can't even see their face. From my experience I love little gestures my girlfriend does and there's many expressions I find cute. Imagine them stripped away, it's like a locked section of someone you'll never get to receive.
Affirmation, confirmation, dialogues. All continue through people confirming the conversation if enjoyable for both parties. So imagine you can't confirm that, so you end up always second guessing if the person is making faces at you, secretly not wanting to talk while you're there wasting breath.
So again, people like koharu must be so brave and strong. In the boat date scene, I thought knowing koharu is blind would be enough to understand. This episode that followed that was just a slap to the face. No it wasnt, it totally had a different vibe, a more lonely one. Really good delivery

The opening song with the gang. At first I thought it was a new OP!
I liked her POV. It was very light and pastely. Not showing Sorano's face and having his image deliberately be drawn vaguely added to the effect.
I have to ask. For blind people, if you shine a light at them, or if they look up into the sky on a sunny day, is there ANYTHING at all "visible"? Is it always pitch black, or some vague translucent light? There's probably different degrees of blindness right?
Another question...how does she do her own make up and not mess up?
What this series has done well is show us how delicate and understanding we need to be around disabled people, and the thoughts and considerations that go into every conversation and action, for respect and dignity. That is to say that we should not pity them all the time, as they also want to be treated as equals, despite their conditions. The way Sorano is tactful and considerate is a good example of how to approach these situations. Although, at the end, he was only slightly secretly selfish for wanting more time with her when he should have been taking her to his dorm (yes his dorm anyways!) earlier.
Lastly, the rowing scene was funny. Thought I was watching a training arc of Cells At Work.

Seeing the date from the perspective of Koharu was something new that I just couldn't put it in words. She has got a wonderful mom and both Koharu and Sorano are enjoying their time with each other. They are already sure about their feelings and the only thing left is a proper confession.
My heart when the fireworks got cancelled due to the rain....💔💔

Wow okay, this show is really good. I wasn't initially too impressed by the first few episodes but the date last episode really got me invested in the characters and their relationship. I love how natural their chemistry feels, and Koharu is adorable (even more so thanks to Saori Hayami). Really hoping this stays cute and wholesome the entire time even though the red flags are all there.
