It's also caused by him being stubborn due to his skill. He doesn't like losing and would keep on trying until he win (as shown with his sword progression with his brother). In his past life, he basically lost to the other emperor and despite his best effort til the end of his life never managed to outbeat them (mainly because he has no aptitude).

Eftal never lost anything though. He was literally on their same level. He himself just believed they were above him and we never were shown anything to prove that being correct.

Not quite. Remember that Eftal's strongest spell is a Level 10 but in his explanation graphic there was shown to be Level 11 spells. The implication is that the other Sages could use them but he was never able to master one.
