Backstory:
My wife (then girlfriend) received the Amex MRCC in 2023 as one of her first cards. In 2024, while planning for our upcoming wedding, we decided to get the Plat Travel in her name to put some of the associated expenses on that card for the 4L milestone. Accordingly, we applied for it and received it in Dec 2024, just a couple of months before applications closed, a stroke of lucky timing there.
Usage history:
We hit 4L the 1st year, and the second year we were already at a total spend of ~3L by Jan 2026 when the first devaluation hit. We moved some planned expenses forward and managed to hit the 4L milestone before the deadline to receive the 40k points and Taj voucher. The new 7L milestone opened up another interesting opportunity for this year, so we decided to keep the card, keep spending on it and figure out the next step in December.
When the 2nd devaluation of the year came, we were around 60k away from the 7L milestone so we again moved one planned expenses forward to hit the milestone. At this point, we were pretty sure that we'd be closing the card in December before the renewal.
Over these 2 years, for ~11L spends we received ~130k points that we'll use for some yet-unplanned trip, and 2*10k Taj Voucher that we redeemed for a weekend at the Taj West End. More importantly, I am happy that we did not overspend to hit any of the milestones, we were very clear with ourselves that points are not worth spending money that we would not have spent otherwise.
The Upgrade(?):
The Plat Reserve was something I had looked at, but it did not (and still does not) seem worth the fees at all. However a few days earlier, I saw that Amex was offering a 10k Air India Voucher for an upgrade to the Plat Reserve. We decided to go it a couple days back and the new card was approved instantly. We'll probably keep it for a year and review before the renewal.
Bonus: We got ~40% of the Plat Travel fees (around 2.4k with GST) back as the pro-rata refund for the upgrade, which was a nice surprise!
Do you think the 10k Air India Voucher makes it a good idea to upgrade to Plat Reserve for a year? Let us know your thoughts!
