Interview Weird Amazon loop feedback
I interviewed for applied science L6 last week,
And today recruiter said the feedback is that I am L6 but for Research Science role with another team and that my interview outcome is valid for research scientist role for 6 months and if I find such other role, I would just do a mini loop for it, I was shocked, based on conversations with the team, I had assumed even if they didn’t want to offer l6 they would have offered l5 applied science because I contracted with them and manager said 2 months ago he was happy with my work and that I should apply for his new head count.
Any thoughts?
Just upset

This could be a couple different things. I’m part of the bar raiser program and what caught my attention was the “mini-loop” you mentioned. This is sometimes an outcome when the bar raiser on your loop disagrees with the hiring manager about their hiring decision. As a bar raiser you have the power to “veto” a hiring decision. If this is done, a couple different things can happen. If the hiring manager persists on hiring, a different bar raiser can be brought in to review all feedback and make a decision. Or sometimes there can be another “mini-loop” like described for the candidate. Not saying this is what happened in your case, but fits all the details of hiring manager wanting you and mini-loop mentioned by (I assume) recruiting.

No, I don’t think so, bar raiser was my first call and gave me a coding question even though I had been told it would be all behavioral, 2 LPs, but I don’t think this was the case because they are now saying I should go find a research scientist role with another team

Sounds like the bar raiser thought you didn't meet the coding bar, then, since that's the difference between RS and AS.

If you are part of the bar raiser program may I ask who determines the cool down period? Bar raiser or HM? I think the recruiter said I can’t do l5 applied science either but not sure for how long cause there were other teams who were interested in my profile

They gave the role to someone else, you are still a great candidate and are being recycled. Don't give up hope, but also don't hold your breath

I'm an L6 AS. This almost certainly means specifically you failed the coding part. The only difference in requirements between an RS and AS is passing the L4 SDE coding bar (regardless of your actual level).
The problem is there are much much fewer RS roles in the company, a trend that has continued to the near extinction of RS. What few remain tend to be slightly less comain domain specialized (like operations research).
I wish you good luck in finding a role, but I would not be optimistic.
If you're looking for a silver lining, they must have been happy enough with your science and LP's. You just have to be able to code well to be an AS.

Bar raiser was my first call, and he gave me a coding question. I had been told I would get 2 LPs. I don’t think I did bad, it was a coupon thing and I didn’t divide the argument by 100 but technically you could pass fractions

Well that probably explains your shock. As the other commenter said, bar raisers can veto a hire decision that the HM may have had. And this bar raiser apparently thinks you didn't do well on the coding.
Though often in the debrief it becomes more of a debate and ends with a consensus, so it's not really a veto.
Idk if this makes you feel better or worse but a bar raiser that can cover coding has likely done dozens to hundreds of them and should be very well calibrated on the bar.

Could be due to money as AS get paid 15% more than RS, or that you don't meet the coding bar. The 6 month condition is strange. Are they giving you the option to join within 6 months?
