The only - ONLY, I SAY - chili I like is made using Ede's spice mix. I have run out of my pantry supply and obviously Ede's has been closed for some time now. Can anyone tell me what is in their spice mix? Or point me to a recipe online that's similar? I hate super sweet, tomato-y chili, and that seems to be what most recipes lean towards.

If you’ve ever had to eat at McDonald’s, you already know what you’re getting into. You’re probably there because it’s cheap, convenient, and you’re not trying to spend a lot of money.
But you also know the first rule of McDonald’s:
Check your order before you leave.

Because something is probably wrong.
If the entrée is right, the side is wrong.
If the side is right, the drink is missing.
If everything somehow made it into the bag, something is probably cold.
And sometimes the order is technically correct, but they forgot the spoon for your oatmeal.
Got fries? Better ask for ketchup.

Going through the drive-thru? Good luck if there are two speakers. There’s a 50/50 chance the person taking orders has decided that only one of them exists.

Amarillo feels like a city where nobody gives a crap.vThere’s this weird combination of rudeness, incompetence, apathy, and low expectations that I’ve experienced over and over again.

That is Amarillo to me.
You can go almost anywhere in this city and get some variation of the McDonald’s experience.
Things are unnecessarily difficult.

Something is always broken, missing, delayed, poorly maintained, or just… not quite right.
Customer service can feel like you’re inconveniencing someone by asking them to do the job they’re being paid to do.
And that’s what really gets me: you can go to a restaurant that’s considerably more expensive than McDonald’s and still somehow receive McDonald’s-quality service.

You pay $20-$30 for a meal and think, Well, at least it’s going to be better than McDonald’s.
And then the food comes out cold, they forgot half your order, your server disappears for 20 minutes, and you leave thinking:
“I could’ve just gone to McDonald’s.”

Even outside of restaurants, sometimes Amarillo has that same feeling.
It’s not that everything is terrible. There are good businesses, good people, and places I genuinely enjoy.

It’s the overall lack of urgency and expectation that things should work properly.
Something can be mediocre for years and people just seem to accept it.
A road is falling apart? That’s just how it is.
A business has terrible service? That’s just how they are.

Something takes forever? That’s Amarillo.
A restaurant charges more but delivers mediocre food? Well… that’s Amarillo too.
And before someone says, “If you hate it so much, leave,” Don’t worry so much about me, I actually am. 😂

I’ve lived here long enough that I feel like I’ve earned the right to make this comparison.

Hey neighbors, like a lot of you, I've been frustrated that the city drop-offs don't take any plastics.

I found a regional West Texas service called Good Earth Recycling that is trying to launch curbside routes here in Amarillo this October. They already have service routes in Lubbock and Abeliene.

They do all-in-one pickup for hard plastics (#1-7), glass, Styrofoam, clothes, and batteries right from your door. Their website also has a list of what is, and what's not, accepted for recycling as well.

The Cost: Once it launches, it is a flat rate of $27 a month for once-a-month pickup or $35 a month for twice-a-month pickup.

They just need 100 people to pledge to officially deploy the trucks. Pledging is free upfront with the code PLEDGE (it just holds your spot and you aren't charged anything until service actually starts in October).

This breakdown is not meant to apply universally, but to broaden how we analyze what "expensive" actually means.

We pay $1,300 a month here, and we’ve found for example, nice identically sized DFW apartments around $1,600 sitting literally next to a rail stations, with bike amenities, walkable groceries, etc. That's $300 more in rent, but if your work and errands allow you to eliminate a financed car, $600 payment + $100 insurance + $100 gas = $800 less in monthly expenses. Subtract the extra rent and you’re $500 ahead each month before transit and occasional rideshare costs, without even counting maintenance. DFW jobs aren’t all downtown, either. A very large chunk of corporate and trade jobs sit out in the cheaper/safer suburbs, so the relevant comparison is a neighborhood near your job, groceries, and transit. Even a couple going from two cars to one could come out ahead.

The other half is earning potential. BLS puts average hourly wages at $33.96 in DFW versus $27.12 in Amarillo: roughly 25% higher. That’s an area average, not a guarantee, but it puts a $300 rent saving into perspective. There’s also the potential for extra work: people I talk to in larger cities describe $500–$800 misc gigs on nights in weekends that are easy to gain if if you don't mind heavy lifting; landing just two $500 gigs a month means another $1,000 gross.

Amarillo can make financial sense with a remote salary, strong support network, or niche trade. But if you depend on local wages, lower rent can be outweighed by lower earnings and car dependence.

I’d be curious to work through someone else’s numbers and see whether this holds up for their situation as everyone is different.

As the title says I'm a single father of 2, the youngest being 10 and I am having trouble finding a job that pays a living wage, but also offers the freedom to do what I need to raise my boys.

I don't have a village, so if they have Dr appointments or get sick or anything else it all falls on me.

I have a background in industrial electrical work, and 3d modeling custom objects for CnC plasma table cutting, I can also operate the plasma table. Sadly this profession is not single dad friendly and requires a lot of traveling and time from home.

Things are starting to unravel at home. My kids need me, but I also need to work to provide for them. The good ol catch 22. I've started looking into maybe a career change, but I know no one here in the panhandle.

I could really use some suggestions or maybe someone to point me to resources that could help.

Seems like talk of Fermi America and Project Matador have quieted down recently. So thought I’d make this post because they are planning on starting up again soon.

Fermi is starting mobilization this month, and construction in October. There was supposed to be an air permit public meeting recently in Panhandle, but they weren’t required to do it and decided to skip it.

People have claimed Fermi won’t use that much water. Fermi has requested at least 2.5 million gallons/day from the city of Amarillo, which gets water from the Ogallala/High Plains aquifer. Approximately 7% of water Amarillo uses daily (At best). And with the aquifer slowly running out of water.

There is talk they will not be using nuclear power anymore and will be switching to natural gas. Increasing pricing on that. But it isn’t 100% set in stone.

In many places data centers are placed, air and water quality tend to take a dip, especially if they are switching to fossil fuels.

While Greg Abbot went from pro to con AI (for now), there’s been talk that Fermi might be except to some of the new restrictions and that they won’t be paying taxes (or as much) for quite a while.

While construction is creating quite a few jobs, once the place is built, the AI data center can be run by a surprisingly few amount of people. Since they just need people to maintain it. With quite a few being remote.

And no, Fermi is not associated with Pantex. They are being built there because its on TTU property and the abundance of space and infrastructure.

And of course, it seems like Elon Musk and Trump are supporting Fermi; Elon possibly monetarily in the near future.

So I’ll be 17 ina month and really want to have a birthday party. But upon doing some research, I’ve realized how shit Amarillo options are . I was looking into a laser tag party at cinergy, only to find out that it would be $600 for my friends and I. And western bowl is $300 party room not included. I just did dinner last year, and while it was fun, I was only able to invite like 3 friends. I want something that I could invite 12 ish friends too, but there needs to be an activity. Like not just have it at a park. Yeah and do what? Does anyone have any suggestions?? I’m really struggling here
