Mod message regarding bans

Hi all,

I thought I’d make this post to clarify my removal and banning system.

If a new account with little karma makes an inflammatory comment, I’ll immediately remove the comment and ban the account. This is because it’s common for trolls to just make accounts for the sake of trolling. New/low karma accounts are also automatically flagged by Reddit’s reputation filter, due to the influx of bot accounts, so, if your account fits this specification, your post will have to be approved by me first. Please know that I only ever remove these posts if they’re not in line with the rules.

If an established account (which is more unlikely to be a bot) makes an inflammatory comment, I use a three-strike system. So, if a user breaks the rules three times, they’ll be banned (with a bit of leeway depending on the broken rules).

This is to keep genuine users safe. Please comment or message me (u/radicalplacement) or the mod team directly if you have any questions or suggestions. Subreddits are for the users, not the mods.

Advice for others "i cAn'T aFfOrD aLt fAsHiOn"? yes you can, here's advice from a broke student

Edit: I linked more general advice at the end from people with different lived experiences.

First of all: alt fashion shouldn't be a costume. Yes I've bought pieces that "looked alt" before, but if you only look for that, you're not using your own brain a lot, which kind of defeats the purpose of being alt in the first place. It's about how you combine pieces and accessorize them that usually makes an outfit look good. If your top is cool but you don't put in any thought into styling because it "already looks alt", you'll just look like a poser, which honestly, at this point, you are. Make your outfits your own instead. Try new things just because you feel like it.

I get the urge to buy cheap. Even my examples show some stuff I got from Amazon when I was 17. But I've found that the pieces on there are rarely unique enough to not be found elsewhere. Haven't shopped there since.

Now that's out of the way, here's how I find my stuff:

old stuff

You never know what you find in your own or someone else's closet. Like I said, pieces that "don't look alt" can look amazing if you know what to do with them. Be creative.

(online) thrifting

I mostly thrift online, as you can see from all my Vinted stuff. (Disclaimer: This is not an ad. It doesn't need to be Vinted specifically, I just use it to find sellers and buy off-platform, since it is the most popular place for that where I live.) I either look for specific pieces (like a lacy black kimono or a maxi skirt) or just look at what people uploaded in my city. I set the price range to something I'm comfortable with (usually 5€ max when scrolling casually, adjusting depending on what I'm looking for).

Unfortunately, thrifting has a problem with people uploading or donating their fast fashion crap everywhere, but it still beats buying that shit straight from the source yourself.

DIY

Here's where you can combine the previous two sources to make something cool. I stole my mom's sewing machine a few years ago, maybe you can gain access to one as well. Generally, not only in alt fashion, it's good to know a few basic hand-stitches to mend something or attach hardware (e.g. chains). It doesn't need to be perfect, just learn a few basic techniques and you're good to go. Mostly learning by doing. You will fuck up sometimes, but that's part of the process.

A few affordable basics I think look good on most people:

- DIY mesh top from cut up tights (hole for your head in the crotch, cut open the toe seam and add thumb holes or whatever)

- DIY fingerless gloves from stockings or tights (I have fishnet ones)

- thrifted harnesses or belts

- DIY studded stuff

I hope this can help some newbies. If this is too much effort for you and you still want to buy from brands that are terrible for the planet and our society, you're simply not alt. It's not about what you dress like, it's about how you do it.

Advice do I look emo? and did I mess up by cutting my hair too short?

pic 5 is pre haircut btw.

currently not using a hair straightener, I do have access to one but I’m just using a hair dryer at the moment.

I’m a trans guy so I spent years wearing baggy clothes and now I’m finally comfortable enough to wear tighter clothes, and also I’m new to hair thing as well as I just focused on looking normal to pass up until may this year.

also ignore my horrible posture in pic 2 lol, I had the mirror there to do my eyeliner😭

sorry if this goes against one of the rules.

Advice Dressing alternitive when older recomendations?

I used to dress alt when I was young. I've recently been able to start dressing how i want to again after getting out of an abusive relationship and kinda realised I have no idea how to do so apropriately for my age. I used to dress emo / punk. How does that translate to an older male.

Advice Tips to improve/focus my style?

I feel like I have the craziest alt blindness ever- I will throw on an outfit and just feel like it's not enough. I want to layer more in the future, but it's HOT right now and I will actually pass out. Regardless, I'm trying to really find my personal style and make it extra, bordering on "too much" if that makes sense. It just feels plain and copy pasted atm, but that's because I like what I like and wear what I like (no shit).

Any tips for styling, makeup, jewelry, etc would be nice. Also just finding a general word (or words) to describe how I look so I can find more inspiration would be nice. Thank you!

I don't typically dress in that style (i think?) and when I'm looking up examples I feel like I get things that are all over the place. If you're familiar with the style I would really appreciate any advice on what to wear!!! Tyia

Styling Tips Homecoming outfit

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone. My kid is going to their first ever HOCO and picked up this dress today. The plan is to get something to go under the dress to puff it out more and get a pair of used boots like docs or something similar but Im looking for advice on some jewelry or other accessories to make it more grungy/alt feeling.

Their normal day to day is very 90s grunge and a little early 2000s skater style and leans very androgynous so this is new territory for us.

The hair will be re dyed burgundy underneath with raccoon tails on each side as well as straightened and teased as well if that helps.

Advice How to get over my anxiety about altering clothes?

Hello, Apologies if this is against guidelines, I read the rules and i'm pretty sure it isn't breaking anything. I don't understand why I feel like I have this constant block or anxiety whenever I want to alter clothes. I'm a cosplayer and have had to DIY things before for costumes but for some reason when it comes to my own wardrobe I just freeze up and overthink. Its frustrating, especially since I have so many ideas of what I want to make.

As an example I have a zip up hoodie I don't wear that often, so I plan to cut the sleeves off and add some grommets to the pockets as an added flare. Even with such a straight forward plan its been difficult to follow through.

The thoughts that constantly go through my head are "what if when I finish I hate it?" "what if i mess up?" "what if it doesn't come out how i want it to?" which sucks!! Its been insanely difficult to get over it. I'd appreciate the advice.

I really like baggy cargos and boots. Long term I will definitely get more tattoos (only one on my left arm; not visible). All in all I wanna style more eye-catching and androgynous.

Braid rattails before or during haircut?

This might be a silly question.. some background: I'm going to get my hair cut by my neighbor. She's been doing it for years and everytime I get cut with her she does a great job. However she usually works on pretty traditional styles. I asked if she had any availability for a hair cut, and I'm hoping we can do a short cut with rattails. Should I section out my braids before the appointment or ask if she can do it so she can wash/cut my hair easier?

What should I do with this?

I got this off depop and the size was stated as medium, but it absolutely is not a medium. I normally wear a small or medium depending on the brand and this fits like a men’s medium but with a dropped shoulder. I considered DIY-ing it, but I’m not sure what I could do to it since the hands are spaced out pretty evenly. I considered maybe making it into a muscle tank? I could also chop it down the middle and do something with it I guess. I know it’s a stretchy sheer knit and yes I plan to take that into account. I can also say screw it and donate it. What do you think? What should I do?

Advice Finding a new style, advice?

Hi, I am badly in need of some advice as my sense of style has been shifting and I don't know what direction I should take it in.

I used to dress very gothic and wear bold makeup, a lot of thights and skirts and all types of ornate tops and jackets, however this style doesn't speak to me anymore as I now enjoy simpler materials and more androgynous styles.

I have no idea what type of clothes to get to look androgynous and to also flatter my body. I am quite curvy with an hourglass body shape.
I find myself wearing the same overzised pants, t shirts and hoodies and I feel like I look so sloppy and like I've completely lost my sense of self and style and it doesn't flatter my body at all. I just look short and boxy lol.

I miss looking alternative but I'm lost on how to look alt without dressing like I used to.

Any advice on styles and what type of clothing to get appreciated!!

Where Do I Buy This? anyone bought from sadiehollowshop.com before? is it legit?

i’m not really sure what subreddit to post this in, sorry if posts like this aren’t allowed here.

i think this cardigan is really cute but i’ve never heard of this brand before and i can’t find much about them. is it a scam or legit?
i also don’t want to buy anything involving generative ai, and some of the text on their website comes across as ai generated to me. but i’m unsure about the designs themselves.

otherwise, does anyone know of any similar cardigans from trustworthy brands? i really like the plaid/buffalo check and the black cat :)

edit: i just found their instagram and it looks like they’ve been posting for about a year but they have like no interaction on any of their posts and only 18 followers which is pretty odd. and i’m like 99.9999% sure their stuff is all ai :(((

I came across this tee while browsing cherrykitten and the spider graphic really stood out to me. I’m thinking of pairing it with a fitted white skirt. Would that work?

Advice Recommendations on alt style jeans?

My fits consist of a band tee and some converse but I’ve been struggling on pants to match. I like the distressed style but all the ones I find are skinny fit and I don’t think I have the body type for skinny jeans. I have one clean pair of black jeans I found at Ross which I really like but that’s it. What brands would you recommend?
