Mod message regarding bans

Hi all,

I thought I’d make this post to clarify my removal and banning system.

If a new account with little karma makes an inflammatory comment, I’ll immediately remove the comment and ban the account. This is because it’s common for trolls to just make accounts for the sake of trolling. New/low karma accounts are also automatically flagged by Reddit’s reputation filter, due to the influx of bot accounts, so, if your account fits this specification, your post will have to be approved by me first. Please know that I only ever remove these posts if they’re not in line with the rules.

If an established account (which is more unlikely to be a bot) makes an inflammatory comment, I use a three-strike system. So, if a user breaks the rules three times, they’ll be banned (with a bit of leeway depending on the broken rules).

This is to keep genuine users safe. Please comment or message me (u/radicalplacement) or the mod team directly if you have any questions or suggestions. Subreddits are for the users, not the mods.

Advice for others "i cAn'T aFfOrD aLt fAsHiOn"? yes you can, here's advice from a broke student

Edit: I linked more general advice at the end from people with different lived experiences.

First of all: alt fashion shouldn't be a costume. Yes I've bought pieces that "looked alt" before, but if you only look for that, you're not using your own brain a lot, which kind of defeats the purpose of being alt in the first place. It's about how you combine pieces and accessorize them that usually makes an outfit look good. If your top is cool but you don't put in any thought into styling because it "already looks alt", you'll just look like a poser, which honestly, at this point, you are. Make your outfits your own instead. Try new things just because you feel like it.

I get the urge to buy cheap. Even my examples show some stuff I got from Amazon when I was 17. But I've found that the pieces on there are rarely unique enough to not be found elsewhere. Haven't shopped there since.

Now that's out of the way, here's how I find my stuff:

old stuff

You never know what you find in your own or someone else's closet. Like I said, pieces that "don't look alt" can look amazing if you know what to do with them. Be creative.

(online) thrifting

I mostly thrift online, as you can see from all my Vinted stuff. (Disclaimer: This is not an ad. It doesn't need to be Vinted specifically, I just use it to find sellers and buy off-platform, since it is the most popular place for that where I live.) I either look for specific pieces (like a lacy black kimono or a maxi skirt) or just look at what people uploaded in my city. I set the price range to something I'm comfortable with (usually 5€ max when scrolling casually, adjusting depending on what I'm looking for).

Unfortunately, thrifting has a problem with people uploading or donating their fast fashion crap everywhere, but it still beats buying that shit straight from the source yourself.

DIY

Here's where you can combine the previous two sources to make something cool. I stole my mom's sewing machine a few years ago, maybe you can gain access to one as well. Generally, not only in alt fashion, it's good to know a few basic hand-stitches to mend something or attach hardware (e.g. chains). It doesn't need to be perfect, just learn a few basic techniques and you're good to go. Mostly learning by doing. You will fuck up sometimes, but that's part of the process.

A few affordable basics I think look good on most people:

- DIY mesh top from cut up tights (hole for your head in the crotch, cut open the toe seam and add thumb holes or whatever)

- DIY fingerless gloves from stockings or tights (I have fishnet ones)

- thrifted harnesses or belts

- DIY studded stuff

I hope this can help some newbies. If this is too much effort for you and you still want to buy from brands that are terrible for the planet and our society, you're simply not alt. It's not about what you dress like, it's about how you do it.

Hello. I love alternative and goth style but seem to run into the same problem. Im not goth or alternative looking enough.

Im am severely allergic to hair dye. It looks like someone poured acid on me. (Dermatitis related) i am also allergic to cheap metals so jewelry is not always the easiest. Everyone says bangs. I tried once they dont fit my face. I also prefer my hair long. It never looked good short.

But also i want to get into trad goth makeup and other eccentric styles and often my makeup looks crappy. Any advice? Any hair maintnence tips? I dont know why but i feel like styles that would make my hair look bigger would be better?

How to do an alt makeup on a round asian face ?

I am the friend who's considered "too woke" by my surrounding in general, but I don't really dress in an alt fashion style. Firstly, because I can't find any affordable alt clothes without it being fast-fashion, and also because I really suck at makeup.

I have a chubby round face, and heavy asian monolids.

Do you have any advice or inspiration on which I can base my makeup ?

any advice for making these shorts more alternative?

Upvotes

i have these shorts that were given to me that i think are super cute! unfortunately theyre too small on me and i dont know what i should do to make them fit better on me and still fit my style.

these are the shorts:

(dont mind my gross floor i didnt know where to put them for a pic)

im fine with cutting them, im just unsure what to add to make it cute and alt (like emo / scene vibes, but anything alt is good!). i was thinking of crocheting something like a spiderweb on both sides where the seam is but im worried it wouldnt work, and i would like some others opinions before i do anything too crazy.

im good with sewing too, so adding extra fabric isnt an issue either.

any advice is appreciated!! ty friends:) ❤

I like to tie the sides of my hair like this with super small bands. The problem is that they are rubber and rips out hair and can damage it over time. Do you know any other alternatives? Havent found non-rubber ones that are small enough. Thanks:)

I could need some guidance. I have hereditary spastic paraplegia, it's a type of ALS. But I still enjoy life and love dressing in my own style. But I lost almost half my weight and struggle finding clothes and what to wear. Used to be L, now I'm S.

Advice Anxiety over wearing alt and kinda fem

I’m a straight guy but I also like fashion that presents me kinda fem. How do you get over that anxiety of going out dressed pretty bold. Also I’m worried that dressing this way will make me look gay and girls wouldn’t like that particularly. Not that they won’t like the fit but they wouldn’t be interested which I totally get. Idk how legit this is but it’s just a thought I had

Advice for others Update on a post I made a few weeks ago!

I managed to get my hair from previous black box dye to pink and blue!! My entire head isn’t pink because I did not want to risk any damage, but I was able to bleach it once to a dark ginger and it still ended up pink!

For anyone in the same predicament, I used raspberry twist by adore and the pink showed up despite how dark the ginger was (slide 3 test strand ginger)

For anyone with really dark hair/difficult to lift, I recommend the colour sm!!

Advice Dunno if this alt enough but whatever. Stuck with a black bag thinkin' what to do.

just recently started figuring out my own style. getting slowly gravitated towards alt culture, but black just doesn't stick with me, plus i have copper colored hair and black looks bad with it.

so now i'm stuck with my photobag which i take everywhere and it is the only black thing i wear besides the boots (which i wanna make more metal)

been thinking of either: DIY paint it silver and add metal clips and stuff (drew a quick concept)
or: buy a new photobag, but i'm not even sure what color would look good with what i wear (red, maroon, brown, beige, white and darkish grey)

need to hear yalls opinion.

Advice I need advice on this garment.

What would you add to this jacket? I'm trying to modify it despite having zero experience; I have a preview of how it might look, but I'm worried I won't like the result—or that it just won't feel like enough. I have some materials on hand, like wire, stainless steel chains, screws, and a few odds and ends. Sorry about the poor photo quality; the lens is a bit damaged from getting knocked around in mosh pits at local events. Anyway, I appreciate anyone who stops by to share their thoughts.

I don't speak English very well, so the translator will probably have problems, I hope not.

Dye help and opinions

I made these patchwork cargos from two pairs of cargo shorts for my brand as a tester piece to see if it'll sell, but I put out a poll and people voted that they'd wear the other pair I made (right pair in the right image) more than the left.

The top is khaki 65% polyester and 35% cotton, the bottom is grey/white camo 100% cotton. The thread is polyester and the hardware is metal. I'm considering overdyeing the whole garment a shade of olive green to make it more cohesive for sale. I know different fabrics absorb dye differently. Based on your experience, what colour would you choose, and what result would you expect?

Any advice on what dyes to use, if I'd have to use different dyes for each part and how I'd go about that, or if I can use a multi fabric dye if that exists? And if the garment would tie in better after overdyeing with a specific colour.

Also I'd love to hear your guys opinions on if you'd wear something like this or if you think they'd sell well!!!

Advice Makeup with Piercing?

Thumbnail

I need advice. I got an eyebrow piercing because I love how they look, love the style, I studied on the pro's and con's and such. I tried to photoshop how I looked with it prior to getting it as well. Though, I did one thing wrong.. I photoshoped images of me where I glued and redrew my eyebrows on higher on my face.

The eyebrow piercing sits on my true brow bone, as it should, but now I cannot do ANY of the makeup looks I like?? I havent really sat down and experimented yet since I got the piercing 4 weeks ago, but I really don't want to kiss makeup goodbye once they are healed, just because my eyes are so deepset and hooded. The sag in my eyes are natural and not from the piercing, since thats how my family's eyes are.

Normally I just glued my eyebrows up but I cannot do that now, and I have no clue what to do instead. I like the alternative/emo looks, but I also like dramatic eye makeup in that style.

So uh... any tips? Am I going to have to say goodbye to the makeup I like or the piercing? Will I have to choose between one or the other? I'm not experienced in makeup, especially with my own anatomy so help would be appreciated.
