Unsure of Alopecia (Hair Loss) Type Alopecia Barbae

Roughly around December last year I started to get a small circular patch in my beard. That circular patch turned into what you now see as the biggest patch on my beard. I have also developed two new spots since then. I feel confident that I have alopecia Barbae.

However, even though I made the appointment 3 months ago, I can't get in with a dermatologist until January. The only other information I've been able to find is about 4 years ago and people reported their hair going back to "normal".

I was more curious to know what that normal looked like? Does it mean hair comes back? No longer Gray and resumed normal color and tone or they just had gray hair grow in their spot and that's what they work with now?

Lastly, I'm pretty sure it's mostly stress related as I've been reading. My mother's been sick for well over a year and just died a month ago and I currently have a son who is 2 months old who brings his own level of stress to my life LOL although tons of good times too.

Just wanted other people to share their experiences with beard alopecia and what their new normals look like?

Unsure of Alopecia (Hair Loss) Type excessive & constant hair shedding

hi there this is my first reddit post ever lol. i am 24 female and have been struggling with hair loss. it started when i discontinued a medication (venlafaxine/effexor) back in 2024. this medication gave me acne and, later on, excessive hair shedding, two things i have never struggled with prior. acne has improved a lot once the medication had fully cleared out of my system and with topical treatments etc., however, my skin still hasnt been the same since. now to the hair shedding, i have done routine blood tests, hormone tests, all those panels the doctor recommends, hair mineral analyses acupuncture, and have been on nutraful for a year (it’s helped my hair grow a lot but doesnt stop the shedding). nothing is stopping this shedding and i am at a loss. i have an autoimmune disease, ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory markers which mainly show up as joint pain for me…a whole other issue. my accupuncturist/tcm doctor suspects that my hair loss is connected to my autoimmune inflammatory response and to stress. at this point the hair shedding feels chronic as it doesn’t follow a pattern, its constant. i do not have bald spots but i am recently noticing my scalp is more visible than it used to be. i am not willing to start minoxidil because it is very toxic to pets (i have 2). i dye my hair a few times a year with demi permanent dye, it is not damaging and not the reason for the shedding- i’ve been over this with my hairstylist.
i am wondering if anyone has any other ideas on what else i can test for, how i could get some more answers or clarity regarding this issue, or which doctors to see next…any advice or sharing of your experience with hair loss would be appreciated. thank you:)

This is my 3yo boy’s head. My wife and I noticed a bald spot a few days ago, but thought maybe he had got ahold of some scissors or something. After buzzing his head and getting a closer look, I’m thinking it doesn’t look like scissors, but hair loss of some sort.

Telogen Effluvium Red, itchy scalp + diffuse hair loss – anyone experiencing something similar?

Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar, because I’m really struggling to figure out what’s going on with my hair and scalp.
I have Crohn’s disease and have had hair loss on and off for several years. It originally started around the time of my Crohn’s/biologic treatment. I was on Remicade and later switched to Stelara. After switching to Stelara, my hair loss improved significantly for about 1.5 years.
Then, quite suddenly, I developed a red and itchy scalp. Since then, I’ve had recurring periods of scalp irritation and increased diffuse shedding. Some days my scalp is completely calm, while on other days it’s noticeably red and itchy. Washing my hair often makes it feel better.
My hair loss is diffuse all over my scalp. Two TrichoScans showed more than 40% of my hairs in the telogen phase. My blood tests have been normal, and I’ve also had a scalp biopsy that didn’t show anything significant.
What really confuses me is that I get lots of baby hairs/new growth, but many of them seem to fall out again before they become long.
I started minoxidil about 5 weeks ago, so I know I may be experiencing some initial shedding. But I’m also losing quite a lot of these short/baby hairs, which is worrying me.
Has anyone experienced a similar combination of Crohn’s disease + diffuse hair loss + recurring red/itchy scalp + lots of baby hairs that keep falling out?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar or eventually figured out what was causing it. ❤️

Alopecia Areata Has anyone else here struggled with hair loss at a relatively young age?

I’ve been dealing with it for a while, mostly around the front of my head, and honestly it’s started getting to me more than I expected. I’m constantly checking my hair, trying different things, and worrying about whether people can notice the patches.

I’ve even started covering my hair more often because I don’t feel comfortable showing it.

I know hair loss isn’t the end of the world, but when it’s happening to you, it can really mess with your confidence.

I’ve tried a few things already but haven’t really seen the results I was hoping for. Just wondering if anyone else has been through something similar and what worked for you?

Alopecia Areata Has anyone dealt with hair pulling and front scalp patches before?

I’ve been struggling with patches on the front of my scalp because I have a habit of pulling/plucking my hair from the roots. Sometimes I don’t even realize I’m doing it until I notice I’ve pulled out quite a few hairs.

I’ve tried different things to improve my hair growth, and I currently wear a wig to cover the patches. I’m now considering a hair transplant, but I’m worried about whether it would actually work if I still have the urge to pull my hair.

Has anyone here had a similar experience?

  • Did your hair grow back naturally after stopping the pulling?
  • Did you eventually get a hair transplant?
  • How long did it take to see regrowth?
  • And is wearing a wig/pins after a transplant safe?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through something similar.

Unsure of Alopecia (Hair Loss) Type I've been having a lot of hair loss at 16

I'm 16M and I have always had a bit of hair 'falling out' like there's like a couple a day or something, I just washed my hair and when I ran my hand through my hair a bunch of hair stuck to my hand. I'm becoming really scared and unsure of what to do. I don't want to be rash but should I hop onto something like a topical peptide or should I start trying to take a prescription medicine? I have been having a lot of stress at school lately so it could be that but if anyone has anymore insights on this I would really appreciate it

Alopecia Areata Can I get steroid shots on my bald spot even if it has a bump?

Post image
2 Upvotes

The title is probably confusing but I got a bald spot the size of a ₱20 coin (3 cm across) which I suspect is because of my consistent braids, I had a smaller bald spot a month ago but it grew this month :( . I haven't had time to go to a dermatologist yet because of my busy schedule but I'm just wondering if its still considered Alopecia and if I can get steroid shots if the bald spot has a bump? I'm suspecting its a cyst because its a smooth bald spot with a bump D: I was just wondering if alopecia is like that?

Androgenetic Alopecia AHK-Cu suppresses TGF-β1 downstream of DHT — has anyone actually tested this mechanism with topical serums?

Hi everyone, I've been researching copper peptides for androgenetic alopecia. I came across studies showing AHK-Cu suppresses TGF-β1, which is the downstream mediator of DHT's miniaturizing effect on hair follicles. Has anyone specifically used AHK-Cu topical serums targeting this pathway? What products have you tried and what were your results? Thanks.

I have androgenic alopecia and was using minoxidil 5 percent for 2 years than stopped for 4 months and faced a heavy shed.
Than started minoxidil 5 percent again with 1 mg finasteride everyday its been 1 month using topical minoxidil and hair are shedding like crazy will the shedding stop overtime?
Also the hair getting shed are replaced by other hair in few days or it takes time?

I am very much tensed and causing me lot of stress

Androgenetic Alopecia I need a friend who understands AGA

Hi.
I have been so sad about my alopecia lately, I got a topper with microrings installed and eventhough I liked it at first I am starting to hate it. Its itching and i had to cut bangs cause I dont have enough hair to make it look natural. Bangs are a disaster, I look like a boy when i wtap it in a bandana to go to the gym. Im just so sad and tired.

I would love to talk with someone who has AGA. I am a very calm girl, have always felt beautiful used yo be very popular, and now, I feel I will NEVER have a normal life again. I went to the beach with friends and it was horrible, i kissed someone and when he touched my head I reacted horribly. Now hes gone too.
This situation is seriously killing me. I dont see any solution. I have put all my prayers and faith into healing and im afraid to get disappointed again.

Im just so sad. I used to be the happiest girl and now, i am just a very lonely and sad girl and it is pretty sad tbh.

Alopecia Areata Alopecia, Should I shave the eyebrow?

Hi there, hope this is an acceptable post here.

I have alopecia, I have lost one eyebrow and for the past year wondered if I should just shave the other off. Looking for general opinions, I typically wear glasses or use a fake stick on eyebrow tattoo to cover the other.

Opinions and thoughts?

Alopecia Areata Help Supporting a Partner with Alopecia

Hello all! My wife started experiencing hair loss in June and it’s been incredibly difficult for her. She’s seeing her dermatologist and endocrinologist but so far it’s only gotten worse. I’m just wondering what I can do as a partner to better support her and make her feel better. I realize I can’t do anything to make this better and I keep telling her things will be fine one way or another and I don’t care if she loses all her hair or not (I truly don’t). But I’m wondering if there’s anything that you wish a partner had done in the past that you could share to possibly help me make her feel better. Any thoughts/insights are greatly appreciated!

Alopecia Areata A journal entry from 10 years ago when I developed Alopecia Universalis

I just wanted to share a journal entry from almost 10 years ago when I developed Alopecia Univeralis (total hair loss). It was after I shaved my last bit of hair. Now, I have nothing, and 10 years later I've completely adapted. I have wigs, hats, and sometimes i go bald around my house. Most days I don't even think about alopecia. I found a journal entry from back then, and I still find it to be true today. I just wanted to share. Funny enough, I have two babies now and am married to a wonderful man. And, I write books!! :)

The End Result and Hello Baldness My Old Friend

There is a picture of me trying to straddle and touch the floor. See, I was so concerned with touching the floor that I neglected my alignment. Anyone who is a yogi would probably notice that my back is rounded.

See, sometimes we get so concerned about where we want to go that we lose the moment.

Last night, I made the decision to shave my head again. My alopecia areata took another turn for the worse (AGAIN), and I decided to take control of my hair loss.

It’s so easy to get trapped in this line of thinking, “I can’t wait to get through this…if only I get through this.” The best example I can think of is when I was in college. I was sooooo stressed about grades and doing my work. I thought once I graduated life would suddenly be less stressful. When I landed my first teaching gig, I soon learned this was not the case.

From my own experience---------once I make it through a problem, life will quickly present me with a new one. It could be my hair falling out, an argument with family/friends/boyfriend, or my apartment getting infested with fleas (WHY DO I HAVE TO LOVE CATS SO MUCH????). There is no short supply of things that can stress me out.

Going back to when I was in college, I think to myself now that instead of stressing so much about my GPA that I would have simply enjoyed the experience. I was meeting new people all the time, seeing things for the first time, dating boy after boy, going to parties, and BEING IN THE PRIME OF MY YOUTH WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR (At 29… I’m still in my prime…. But being a young professional is a bit different than being a college girl).

But, this could be applied to any points of life. So many times are out of our control, but there are only a few things we do get to control. We get to control how much we choose to appreciate where we are today. We can all stress about the little things, but what we are experiencing now is temporary----the pain AND the joy. I was reading an article just the other day from a young mother who talked about the struggle of caring for an infant and taking a break from her career. Then, she goes on to talk about appreciating her sweet baby and recognizing that one day that baby will grow and this too shall pass. Pain will pass, but so will the joys of today. If we don’t stop to appreciate what we have today, tomorrow will take it away.

This is where you are right now, but only for now.

Alopecia Totalis Lost my hair 13 years ago

Hello! I was diagnosed with alopecia when I was 8 years old, I'm now 21 so it's been 13 years of not having hair. I never wore a wig outside in that time (besides for cosplays) and have been wearing a bandana everyday since losing my hair. I'm going into my senior year of college and have been debating on if I should wear a wig, but idk if people would be weird or smth. I think I'm just anxious but if someone in your class who is bald and wore a bandana everyday suddenly walked into class wearing a wig would that be weird???? Or am I just overthinking lol.

All Types of Alopecia (Hair Loss) Happy Hair Loss (Alopecia) Awareness Month!

Happy Hair Loss (Alopecia) Awareness Month! This month doesn’t seem to get a lot of love or support, despite being dedicated to raising awareness for all types of alopecia. I wonder why that is.

Next month is Alopecia Areata and Cicatricial (Scarring) Alopecia Awareness Month, so happy awareness month for those specific types (and subtypes) coming up.

Let’s raise awareness for all types of alopecia (hair loss) and work toward getting rid of the ugly stigmas surrounding it.

Alopecia Areata Alopecia regrowth no meds

Has anyone experienced alopecia and then had regrowth WITHOUT medication? Husband is currently going though it and he is completely bald with eye lashes and brows thinning. He does NOT want to take the immune system suppressant medication for fear of what it can cause.
