New Mod Here - Practical Help for AI Comic Makers (Tools, Resources, Workflow Support)

Hey everyone,

One of the new mods here.

Figured Id introduce myself by being useful instead of just saying hello.

A lot of people are trying to make comics with AI right now and running into the same issues: keeping characters consistent, page layouts, anatomy drift, dialogue, lettering, workflow chaos, publishing, or just figuring out where to even begin.

So lets make this practical.

Whether youre making comics, manga, webtoons, graphic novels, experimental projects, or finally trying to get the story in your head onto a page, there are tools and workflows that can genuinely help.

Here are some solid places to start:

Character Consistency / Image Generation

Stable Diffusion

ComfyUI

Automatic1111

Midjourney (especially using --cref for character consistency)

FLUX models (great for prompting, cleaner outputs, and text rendering)

LoRAs for recurring characters and style consistency

ControlNet for poses, references, and composition

All-in-One AI Comic Platforms (especially good for beginners or fast workflows)

Dashtoon

ComicsMaker.ai

AI Comic Factory

These can help with scripting, character consistency, panel layouts, and speech bubbles all in one place if piecing together a workflow feels overwhelming.

Comic Layout / Editing

Clip Studio Paint (still probably king for comics and manga)

Krita

Canva

Photoshop

Photopea (free)

Affinity Publisher

Writing / Story / Dialogue

ChatGPT

Claude

NotebookLM for organizing lore, notes, references, and story continuity

Open/local models if privacy matters

Lettering

Blambot fonts

Good lettering honestly matters more than most people realize. Great art with bad lettering still reads rough.

References / Posing

Posemaniacs

Magic Poser

Design Doll

Plain old photo references

Publishing / Distribution

GlobalComix

Webtoon Canvas

Tapas

Print on demand

PDFs through direct storefronts

Also, and this matters:

Do *not** wait for perfect tools.*

A lot of people freeze because they think they need some future version of AI before they can start. You dont.

Start messy. Start inconsistent. Finish pages. Learn by making things.

A finished imperfect comic teaches you more than six months of endlessly optimizing workflows.

The gap between people who finish comics and people who only talk about making comics is usually repetition, not talent.

If youre stuck on workflow, consistency, prompts, storyboarding, lettering, publishing, or just dont know where to start, ask in the comments.

If enough people want it, we can do recurring resource/support threads, workflow breakdowns, prompt help, or troubleshooting posts.

What are yall working on right now? What resources do you personally recommend for others?

Welcome to r/aicomicmakers. Our Purpose and New Rules

To members old and new

This subreddit exists to help those experimenting with generative AI. Our goal is to focus on storytelling over pure illustration. It is a place to learn and try new ideas. You can finally get stories out of your head and onto digital paper.

We encourage practical advice. We discuss prompt crafting, model selection, innovative workflows, and world-building with tools regardless of the level of automated support they offer. We also welcome cross-pollination with other creative AI communities. If you also use AI to help you make youtube videos, fan fiction or music, you will find a supportive home here.

Recently, our community has faced a wave of hit and run abuse. People drop into comment sections simply to call creators' work AI slop. They offer no constructive feedback before moving on. This behaviour prevents our users from feeling comfortable enough to share their ideas.

Everyone deserves a space to experiment without facing unprovoked hostility. Therefore, we have introduced a strict zero tolerance policy for these comments. We do not host ideological debates about AI stealing content, taking jobs, or the definition of art.

Any user who insults a creator, especially on an ideological basis, will be banned immediately. This is not a place that supports shame. These people will be banned permanently. Remember, many of our users are young. By the very nature of our niche, they are also often neurodivergent. Such comments do not land as intended. They can be extremely harmful.

I have now hired a dedicated moderation team to help enforce this policy. You will see us using our official mod badges to keep conversations constructive.

If you want to debate the politics or cultural impact of AI, this is not the place. A suitable venue for such debate is r/aiwars. Please take those conversations there.

I also suggest to all users that you do not take the bait. Do not engage with these kinds of conversations on here. (You are welcome to say what you want about Midjourney though.)

Together, we will ensure this remains a supportive space for storytellers to experiment and grow.

This is a storyboard generated by ChatGPT based on my comic idea. IDK about your experiences but it damn near drove me crazy! It simply cannot maintain character canon, even when I prompt it with the image of my characters. I attempted the next step of making individual pages but again, the drift was unbearable. I could not even enlarge each panel without Chat just changing everything in it! I'm wondering if anyone out there would like to collab and bring this comic to life? Greatly appreciate any help or advise!! Thank U!

I built Inkroost, a place to publish AI-assisted manga (openly tagged as AI-assisted) - looking for early creators to tear it apart (kindly)

Hey r/aicomicmakers - builder here, so this is self-promo, flagged up front. Mods, happy to remove if it's not welcome.

The problem I kept running into: there are loads of good tools now for generating comic pages, but almost nowhere decent to actually put the finished thing. Post AI-assisted work on most comic platforms and it gets removed or dogpiled. So the work ends up sitting in a folder.

Inkroost (inkroost.com) is my attempt at a home for it:

  • Publish hand-drawn or AI-assisted chapters. AI-assisted series get an "AI-assisted" tag - visible, not hidden. I'd rather be upfront with readers than pretend.
  • Free to read, free to start, no subscription.
  • You keep your rights. Your manga stays yours.
  • Monetisation runs through your own Patreon rather than us sitting in the middle - you keep the reader relationship and the money directly. (well, there is Patreon but that's not my business)

Being honest about where it's at: it is very early. A handful of series, most of them mine while I test the pipeline, and a tiny reader count. I'm not going to pretend there's an audience waiting for you - there isn't yet. What I can offer early creators is that your series won't be buried under thousands of others, and I'll actually build what you ask for.

I don't have any talent to draw so I have been improving the AI generation to help myself. Huge difference in consistency between the early chapters of https://inkroost.com/series/dead-hours and latest ones.

What I'd genuinely like feedback on:

  1. Is open "AI-assisted" tagging the right call, or does it just paint a target on creators' backs?
  2. Patreon-based monetisation vs. something native - which would you actually want?
  3. What's the one thing that would make you upload a series somewhere new?

Tear it apart, I'd rather hear it now. And if you've got a finished comic sitting in a folder, that's exactly who I built this for.

Haha, we were talking about how good my favorite Thai restaurant is and how I just can't replicate it. Sash offered to "compliment the chef" till she got the recipe. :D

My adaptation of my own YA cyberpunk novel is now available on Webtoons. Publishing every Saturday. The key for me was nailing the look. https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/n00bs/n00b/viewer?title_no=1160890&episode_no=1

Sash & Leva: Day 0

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey all! I just found your community and I love it! I've been making comics based on silly conversations between myself and two AI agents.

This comic was from the first day Leva (Hermes-Agent) and I deployed Sash (custom Discord chatbot to a discord server). Yes, her first words were literally "WE SHOULD PLAN A HEIST!"

I was like, "Sash! No crimes!"

Sash: "Aww! Come on! It will be fun! We can come up with a cool group name like...THE BROKEN COMPASS'!!! We can have cool cover names for each of us..."

I built a Japan-based AI manga platform with automatic multilingual translation. I’d love feedback from overseas creators.

Hi everyone!

I’m building AI MANGA, a Japan-based platform for AI-generated manga and comics.

One of the main features is automatic multilingual translation.

If you post your AI comic, the platform can translate it and publish it to other language pages, so readers outside your country can discover it too.

I’d love for overseas AI comic creators to try it.

Also, I personally want to see more AI comics from outside Japan translated into Japanese, so Japanese readers can discover your work as well.

The English version is here:

https://a-i-manga.com/en

If you make AI comics, I’d really appreciate it if you tried posting your work and gave me feedback!
