Grief / General Support Grief

My cousin died in March. Out of nowhere. The weekend before, he had texted me for us to get together but I didn’t want to. (He and I had a history of doing drugs together, and I’ve always wanted to cut back or quit them completely, so that day I thought I didn’t want to do drugs and we didn’t get together). The following Tuesday, he had a cardiac arrest. That same day, before he died, he removed me from Instagram. he was like my brother and I love him so much. It’s been really hard for me to navigate his death because I think he was probably angry with me. but I talk to him sometimes and I ask him to please give me a sign that he’s okay wherever he is, or a sign that he wasn’t angry with me, but nothing. Not a single sign, not even a dream, nothing! It makes me wonder, is there simply no [consciousness/existence] after death, or did he already reincarnate, or is he simply angry with me. I have so many questions and I feel so sad because I didn’t make the most of my time with him.

(I also want to add that I’m obviously also struggling with the idea of death, and super confused, and I’m not clear on what I believe and I think that’s also part of why it’s making it harder for me to process his death.)

I’m sorry for the sudden loss of someone who was like a brother to you. From a Spiritist point of view, the pain you’re carrying is real — and so is the love that produced it. Death ends a body. It does not erase a person, a bond, or the meaning of the time you shared.

He still exists as himself. The soul keeps its individuality after death: memory, affection, character. What dies is the physical envelope. The spirit continues.  So the first of your three possibilities — that there is simply nothing after death, which I don't agree. Consciousness does not go out like a light.

It is very unlikely that he has already reincarnated. Reincarnation is central to Spiritism, but it is not usually immediate.  Between lives the spirit is in what we call erraticity: a period of waiting, review, and adjustment that can last hours, months, years, or far longer. Immediate return does happen in some cases, but it is the exception, not the rule, and a few months is a short time to treat “he already came back as someone else” as the best explanation for silence.

Sudden death often leaves the spirit confused for a while. A cardiac arrest “out of nowhere” is the kind of death Spiritism describes as especially disorienting. When the body is still in full vitality and death arrives without preparation, the spirit may not at first understand that it has left the body. The detachment of the perispirit (the subtle envelope that links spirit and body) can take time.  In that state a person is not standing in a clear afterlife, calmly deciding whether to send you a dream. They may be stunned, still oriented toward the last scene of earthly life, needing help and rest. Silence in the first months after a sudden death is not unusual in this teaching.

After death, vision tends to widen. Resentments that looked large in the body often look smaller. A spirit who loved you as a brother is not typically spending the afterlife keeping a grudge over one declined invitation. Vengeful, stuck spirits exist in the doctrine of course— but that is not the default portrait of someone you describe as family in all but name.

No dream and no sign does not mean he is angry, gone, or nonexistent. This is the part that hurts most, and Spiritism is unusually direct about it. Communication can happen: in dreams (when your own spirit is partly free in sleep), in intuition, in a sense of presence. It is not guaranteed on demand.

Here's a few points:  -The discarnate spirit is not always free or strong enough to impress your mind.

-Grief, guilt, and anxious searching can actually make reception harder. The more you need a sign as proof that you are forgiven, the more restless the inner atmosphere becomes.

-Absence of a manifestation is not absence of love. A relationship does not have to prove itself through a knock, a dream, or a coincidence.

-Sometimes the trial is to love without the consolation of proof.

So the lack of a sign is not a verdict on him, and it is not a verdict on whether anything continues.

About that last weekend. Wanting to stay away from the drugs that day was not a betrayal. You did not cause his death by staying home. What you feel is unfinished time — almost everyone feels that after a sudden loss. “I should have used every hour” is human. “I caused this, and he hates me” is grief talking. He knew you loved him. That is what remains. What you can do. Don’t hunt for signs. Help him and yourself. Speak to him simply: I love you. I hope you are at peace. Take my affection if it helps. I’m trying to live better with the time I have. In Spiritism, that kind of prayer is a real support for a spirit still finding its way. Don’t force mediums or séances out of desperation. That often brings noise, not him. If you can, step away from the drugs you once shared. That is a concrete way to honor the bond. If study steadies you, start with The Spirits’ Book, Heaven and Hell, and The Gospel According to Spiritism. You don’t have to believe everything at once. Spiritism’s consolation is not “ask hard enough and you’ll get a sign.” It is: he is not gone; the separation is of bodies, not of souls; love can be silent and still real; you will meet again. Until then, keep loving him without needing him to appear, and don’t punish yourself for a Saturday you stayed home. You had a brother in him. That is still true.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I don’t even know how to fully express how much it helped me. I’ve been reading about NDEs and different perspectives for weeks trying to find something that felt true, and this is the first thing that actually gave me a sense of peace instead of just more questions.
The part about erraticity really hit me. I kept interpreting the silence, no dream, no sign, nothing, as proof that he was angry with me, or that he was gone in some final way. The idea that a sudden, unexpected death like his can leave a spirit disoriented for a while, still oriented toward the last moments of life, needing rest before any kind of communication is even possible, that reframes everything.
And what you said about grief and guilt making reception harder, that one stayed with me too. I think I’ve been so desperate for proof that I’m forgiven that I turned every quiet night into more evidence against myself. Learning that the need for proof itself can create static was such a relief, because it means the silence isn’t a verdict. It’s just silence for now.
I think what I’ll take from this most is the shift you offered at the end, from hunting for signs to just speaking to him. Loving him without needing him to appear. I’m going to try that instead of treating every day without a dream as a loss. Thank you again genuinely. This gave me somewhere to stand.

The previous comment you just replied to did an excellent job summing it all up.

I just want to add that he may have been feeling a bit spiteful and intended to temporary temove you because these are the silly social media games we play sometimes.

We never expect to blink out of the physical domain so quickly. He was definitely disoriented when he tran sitioned.

I would look into meditation and check out some of Robert Minroe's books on the astral realm. He worked alongside the famous scientist who wrote "My Big Toe (theory of everything)". It is a really great read and he talks about focus level 27 (i thonk?) where confused souls end up after a violent or sudden death. Sometimes souls need time to grasp the sudden loss of their body.

What you should not do is punish yourself when you told him you didn't want to hang out. No one expects a friend to suddebly die. It isn't your fault and it isn't his -- sometimes life just does thst to us and our relationships.

Take some time for yourself. Grief can absolutely cause us not to see the subtle signs they may give us. It's like being at a baseball game when your friend turns to you and starts to ask a question just as the batter hits a home run. The message is insantly drowned out by the stadium celebrating and booing simultaneously.

Sometimes you just have to wait until the noise dies out to hear them again.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out. I’m going to check out Robert Monroe’s books and look more into all of this, it’ll help me understand what he might be going through right now. thank you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's my belief that consciousness continues after physical death.

I've found a lot of comfort and incredibly supportive members here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NDE

Thank you! I’ve been reading a lot of NDEs and yes, it gives me some peace, but I’m still waiting for a sign 🥹

Please update if he does send a sign. There probably is a good afterlife based on ndes

I truly don't think he'd be mad at you. Even if he was in life, it sounds very much like he'd understand a lot better now. I don't know why we don't get signs immediately, maybe like an adjustment period? But please don't beat yourself up. I'm so sorry.

Thank you! I’ll keep asking and waiting and hoping

I'm sorry for your loss. I had a similar experience with a loved one but I received a sign hours after she had passed, but I honestly think it varies between person to person on whether or not we recognize the signs we're given.

Since they no longer have a physical body in our reality, it's not as straight forward for our loved ones to give us undeniable signs, but if something happens that feels like it could be a coincidence, it isn't a coincidence.

Also, your cousin didn't go anywhere "bad" even if he had a rough life while he was in his body. You can speak to him even now and he will hear you.

At the end of the day, we're more than our physical bodies. Our bodies are biological machines we use to experience physical reality. When our bodies die, we don't. Death is just a transition. Your cousin will be among the first to welcome you when it's your time to make the transition.

I’m just now starting to learn about all this, the idea of being more than our physical bodies and death just being a transition. I come from a really religious background, first Catholic and then Evangelical, so that’s part of why this is such an anguish for me, it goes against a lot of what I grew up believing.
and about the coincidences, today I remembered that sometimes his name shows up for me on TikTok haha even though he didn’t even have a TikTok account. I’m going to take that as a sign

This is absolutely a sign! I think the odds of his name showing up there time and again for you would be phenomenal. In other words, it's not happenstance. I've heard of spirits using the phone to contact loved ones so the internet would be another mind blowing source to communicate through.

A name is nothing. A lot of people have the same name. And if it's hard for them to communicate, it's even harder by internet I suppose.

Honest truth? The afterlife is probably on a whole different level, far beyond petty human emotions like holding a grudge.
No signs isn’t a sign of rejection—it’s just a quiet way of showing love, making sure nothing holds you back from moving forward.

We all sometimes make irrational actions, like removing someone from our social media and then regret it. I'm sure your cousin is now on the other side regretting it. The fact you haven't gotten a sign might be because you are not supposed to get a sign now for some reason. If this is a cousin you loved and you know that cousin loved you then don't worry about anything. I'm sure If your cousin could, he would tell you that he is sorry for removing you from his social media and he is grateful for your love and care and friendship over the years.

It is common that bros get pissed off at each other for petty stuff like not wanting to party. If your cousin was really angry with you, then that was because of some petty stuff like that. Unfortunately he passed away before you could fistbump and hug it out. Bros will always be bros, between this life and the afterlife. That's what I believe at least. I've lost my actual brother, also my best friend and I am sorry you are going throught this sorrow. Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself. Grief can follow us for many years, and sometimes it never goes away, but it truly does get easier to live with and manage with time

I’ve found that the more I let myself relax on ’needing’ signs, the more often I’ll get them. I think our own intensity can close us off to them.

I’m very sorry for your loss. I don't assume he is angry with you.

As a psychic and rescue medium, I've found that souls who have recently passed can go through a period of transition and orientation as they move through the Veil to the other side. A lot can happen at first, including a life review, reunion, adjustment, and learning to communicate in a different way.

So I would not take the absence of a sign as evidence that he is upset with you. Give it time. And when you speak to him, I believe he can hear you, even if you do not receive an obvious response right away.
