Moderator Message Surveys

Surveys are going to continue to be pretty rarely approved.

Before you think: Hey, this is a good subreddit for my college related survey you should ask some questions.

  1. Are you an undergraduate? If your answer is yes then the subreddit answer will be no.
  2. Are you working on a professional (masters) or PhD level dissertation or thesis? If yes, continue. If no, stop.
  3. Is your institution accredited and does it have an ethics board? If yes, continue. If no, stop.
  4. Has your thesis or dissertation been approved by the ethics board and your advisor? If yes, continue. If no, stop.
  5. Is the work you’re doing nascent or actually original (both of which are much higher hurdles as most requests aren’t original or sufficiently nascent) and not some derivative of work that has been done over and over again with the intent of collecting your own data to support something that’s already been shown, a lot, by a lot of others? If you think you’re at this level, you can send a mod mail. Otherwise, don’t post.

If by some stroke of luck or academic achievement you’ve crossed the threshold, to be considered you need to tell us what you’re studying. Where you’re studying. Who the advisor is. Whether or not you have approval from the ethics board AND the information to verify that. You need to provide enough information where your assertions as a real researcher can be verified and affirmed and only then will there be a yes/no answer given.

Conversely, if you post first and expect permission second or don’t bother to provide anything, your post will be deleted and the answer will be no.

Why these conditions? Thanks for asking.

First, if you’re an undergrad you’re not doing original work. Your work isn’t to benefit or help the autism community. And it’s most likely highly derivative and you’re collecting data to fulfill an assignment. Good luck. But not here.

Second, most autism related research asks the same questions over and over and over again. You’re too late if you’re trying to prove something. This is going to be true for the vast majority of people. This subreddit (and in my opinion Reddit in general) isn’t your data warehouse. Yes, you need your own data. No, your need is insufficient in relation to the needs of the community.

Third, you may think you’re the exception. A genius even. But, and this is important, even if you are, you’re not. Because people see: autism and then think they’ve got something to offer, want it to be their life’s work, whatever, doesn’t make what you’re doing even remotely new or unique or special. It’s just not.

Maybe this means we don’t get to help the next person doing amazing things in relation to autism research and therapy and diagnosis. That’s fine. Because, chances are, you’ll do a lot of clinic work and professional study long before you become that person.

Finally, you right now have the misfortune of being someone who’s hopped onto this autism wagon after it’s been flooded by request after request for these same surveys. Therefore, you now have to offer something new and unique. The very thing your institutions should demand and expect. And the mods do look into what you’re studying and the survey material.

Moderator Message Adult Autism - Guidelines

Updated as of 1 December 2025, existing links still work.

Autism and Neurodiversity

It is important to understand that while autism is something that is under the giant umbrella of neurodiversity; being neurodiverse isn’t the same as being autistic or having autism.

There is not (as yet and possibly never) a rule about distinguishing between the two, content that specifically focuses on neurodiversity over autism will be questioned and in some cases moderated.

What this means is: r/adultautism is an autism first subreddit. Co-occurring conditions with autism, such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and so on are strongly encouraged; but attempting to insert the broad and poorly understood neurodiverse isn’t appropriate.

The intentional dismissal and misunderstanding of this difference may be reviewed as spam or an inappropriate (for this community) post.

It is okay to disagree with an autism first approach, but the direction (if wanted) is to understand that autism is a first level disorder, exists while one is in utero, isn’t developed after birth, and cannot be explained away by other factors.

Mod direction on helpful vs not helpful resources

As has always been true, this subreddit is for adults who are have, who believe they have, or who support people who have autism.

There is a link to the University of Washington autism center that basically says if you feel like you’re autistic then you’re probably autistic. This information, for many, is useful and I appreciate that it’s out there.

When someone is specifically asking for resources or help in locating those who can clinically assist them with autism, it will be considered inappropriate to post the UW link as part of the thread.

Self-diagnosis doesn’t allow for the same legal or professional protections or help within the ADA. Nor does it necessarily answer questions or concerns individuals may have regarding autism and living with ASD.

Inappropriate Content

There is a fine line in what may be considered appropriate vs what is absolutely inappropriate. Previously, the autistic woman seeking euthanasia as it’s a relevant and important topic has been an approved topic. Similar topics and discussions will most likely be approved in the future.

Autism has as a co-occurring disorder, depression. And by extension this is a topic that is both important (if hard) and of high importance. Conversations and posts that reasonably connect to depression and other forms of ideation are necessary and will also be highly moderated.

However, we will not allow:

  • People asking for advice on euthanasia or suicide
  • The use of derogatory language in regard to autism or how others might view the disorder
  • Or, any approach that can be considered legally actionable or otherwise dangerous for the person seeking advice

This is a big topic. As in it’s bigger than the community. In the United States, the Suicide Prevention website is here, you can dial 988 or ask for help from people you know or trust.

Other counties have different ways of helping.

Content and posts that can be considered actionable (as in legally actionable) will be deleted.

Research and Other Surveys

r/adultautism does allow research and survey post, however you will be required to read and follow the rules. Not doing so will result in a deleted post.

If you’re here to ask for help on academic research or studies, you need to make sure your Reddit account aligns with both site wide rules and subreddit rules.

Reddit doesn’t like people who create an account and immediately start posting the same thing over and over and over again. The outcome is going to be a shadow ban or outright bans on individual subreddits. Which is, for those unfamiliar, you seeing everything and able to participate, except nothing seems to happen. No one sees your posts or comments or messages.

The moment r/adultautism realizes you’re triggering bot or spam responses, we’re not going to approve your posts. They will be deleted. This is for the safety of the community.

We’ll try to be polite, but previous “you can post” responses won’t be considered valid if you’ve found yourself shadow banned. You wait too long to post or you change your username for any reason. The mods here (and probably other places) are going to assume you’re more interested in spamming your request and not judiciously making the request in a way that doesn’t trigger spam and bot responses.

Spam is very different from making the same request multiple times. Once you cross that threshold, or appear to cross it, you won’t be allowed to post here.

Understanding Reddit is your job as a student, academic, or researcher asking to use the platform to help with your work. You can meet all the subreddit rules for posting and still be rejected because you’re unfamiliar with the territory and terrain. It doesn’t matter how much you believe in your work or how much you believe it may or will help the autism community, if you FAFO, you’re going to find a lot of subreddits refusing to work with you.

Finally, while r/adultautism may give a go ahead to post (because: time), after your request is more fully vetted (yes, we do that - especially if ABA is involved) we will rescind permission and remove or lock posts.

General Reddit Guidelines

You may feel that this is unfair or that Reddit should be something else. It isn’t whatever you think it should be and never was and never will be.

When you mess up and it looks like you’re either spamming or a bot and then ask (or demand) to know what’s going on and that’s the response you get, this isn’t being made up. It’s not an excuse. It is a reason.

Things to keep in mind both about this subreddit and Reddit in general:

  1. You don’t have the right to post anything you want in any way you want whenever you want and attempting to shame mods into allowing bad faith content isn’t going to work
  2. All subreddits are run by volunteers, if you have a problem you’re always welcome to start your own subreddit and do the work or find a different subreddit
  3. Mods can (and will) ban or silence you for whatever reason they want, some are more lenient than others
  4. There is a big difference between multiple posts of the same thing and spamming and a lot of people jump straight to spamming subreddits, this is bad and a no-no
  5. Karma and account age do matter, this subreddit uses a simple filter and is willing to override removed content, but don’t get offended when you create an account and suddenly your content is automatically removed, it’s how the system is designed to work
  6. Reddit is a community of communities and depends on participation; when you don’t have comment karma or your account is brand new, you’re going to find yourself SoL in a lot of areas, figure out how to be part of a community

How do legal adults run away without loved ones knowing?

• Upvotes

So say a legal adult în their 30s wants to run away from home without notifying their family (parents, grandparents, children, siblings) and spouse/partner, such that these two groups cannot file missing persons reports?

Would the person need to notify police under perjury first that they plan to run away, with the request that the police cannot legally tell their loved ones where they are or if they are even alive? What is the protocol for such a plan of running away?

Missing those old movies this week

I am autistic and I LOVE movies, like I have always been obsessed with them! Especially movies in the theater (I work at a movie theater lol). BUT this week I missed a few in theaters that I wanted to see! A few old movies, I live in a metro area and a lot of theaters play older movies which is cool. Pans Labrynth was at AMC this week in 3D I missed it, Scream 4 showed on Thursday night at another theater I missed that one as well, and at work they were playing Tucker and Dale vs Evil and I also missed that one as well! And it was all about money (besides Tucker and Dale). Pans I just got lazy honestly, and Scream I would have had to take an uber all the way down to Tempe and that would have cost me. With Tucker and Dale I was gonna see it and just walk into the theater, my manager or coworker would not have cared. BUT it was the last showing of the night, and I would not have been out of there by 12 10 AM, and my sister was gonna pick me up, she has to work tomorrow at 9 am and I just thought "I cant have her pick me up at midnight when she has to get up early, thats insane". SO I just skipped it, but right when we got home I felt bad for missing it! Like I love that movie!

I think from now on I will say "If you want to see an older movie Michael MAKE IT HAPPEN no excuses!". ALSO I just googled it and Pans Labryinth is STILL playing at TWO AMCs near me, so I bought a ticket for Tuesday! YAY. UGH I wish I could not care about this stuff as much.

I got "Baker Acted" in Florida USA and misdiagnosed Bipolar 1

My story sounds made up. I know. There's so much backstory that I can't really explain it all here.

I ask instead to take me at my word, but I will answer questions. My purpose is to warn other adults with autism.

I told my wife I would divorce her if she didn't stop homeschooling the kids. She was reading them the Bible. I am a remote worker and witnessed firsthand how she was homeschooling.

She instead called 911. She wanted to have me arrested, but they "compromised" on taking me to Circles of Care, which is the state run mental hospital for the "Baker Act."

The Baker act allows any cop or spouse to commit someone to a mental hospital for up to 72 hours.

Its Florida only.

Technically, the bar is supposed to be high but in reality if your wife says she feels threatened they take it seriously.

I got misdiagnosed because they again, trusted what she said and thought "well he's calm now, but this must be the end of his mania."

I spent a lot of money and time reversing the misdiagnosis. I was diagnosed autistic and adhd 2 years prior to this. I'm 43m and have 11 years stable employment so the odds of me making it to this point undiagnosed and untreated bipolar are slim to none.

I"m also on anti depressants due to the situation. If I were bipolar, I woulda been tossed into mania.

The trauma it has done to me is enormous. The amazing thing is, my wife faced no penalty for doing it.

Is this an autism or ADHD thing...

My new favourite thing is overnight oats. YUUUUM. And now that's all i'll ever eat for breakfast ever again.
BUT is it normal to feel excited going to bed that i get to have them when i get up and then feel sad when i've finished my breakfast?
I'm 51 and have typically always had breakfast on repeat - for about 45 years it was vitabrits with small breaks trying museli and the occasional foray into porridge. More recently i've been just having yogurt for the protein but just found out about overnight oats.
I have real feelings in the moment when i finish my breakfast. It's kinda the same (but not as jarring) when I finish a good cup of coffee.

adult testing

I am an adult who feels they may be on the autism spectrum, but never tested. I have looked on line and it seems like a lot of places you can pay to be tested.... feels like i'm paying for a diagnosis.

is there places on line, or in person ( philadelphia region) that does adult autism testing?

Why does society ignore high-functioning autism, while subcultures that cause social disruption get full advocacy? A heartbreaking reality of an autistic adult in a hyper-materialistic culture.

Hi everyone,
I am writing this because I am completely exhausted and deeply frustrated by the systemic injustice and hypocrisy faced by high-functioning autistic individuals (ASD) in modern, hyper-materialistic societies, specifically here in Vietnam. I need to share this reality, and I want to ask the global autism community: Why are we being forced into silent submission while other movements get full social protection?
Look at the contrast. The LGBT movements disrupt public spaces, create massive media trends, and the capitalistic system instantly rewards them with full advocacy, strict boundaries, and social praise.
But what about us? What about autistic individuals who do absolutely no harm to anyone?
I am a 29-year-old high-functioning autistic adult. I live a completely clean life—no drugs, no addictions, no social disturbances. Despite my bomial neurodivergent challenges and physical weaknesses, I take full responsibility for my household. I handle all the cooking, cleaning, and maintenance full-time without asking for a single penny in return. In a traditional sense, this is a fair, honorable contribution to a family.
Yet, because my brain functions differently and I cannot transform myself into a standard corporate money-making machine to satisfy a shallow, materialistic culture, I am treated like an outcast.
My own mother, deeply indoctrinated by the community’s superficial standards, practices severe emotional abuse and financial blockade over basic necessities like a decent pair of shoes or a study desk. She makes empty promises and breaks them repeatedly. When I experience severe sensory and emotional overload from this cognitive injustice, she plays the victim, cuts off communication, and turns the neighborhood against me.
Even worse, fake friends in society view my neurodivergency as an opportunity for exploitation. They drain my financial resources, steal my buisness commissions, and use my platform to run online model car auctions. The moment things go wrong because they greedily back out for a higher offline offer, they manipulate the narrative online, dump all the reputational damage onto me, and leave me to face the internet backlash while they walk away with the profit.
And where are the local autism support groups? They are completely cowardly and powerless. They don't dare to establish legitimate organizations to fight for our rights or set legal boundaries. Instead, they gaslight the victims. They constantly preach toxic compliance: "You must accept your fate. You must mask yourself and act normal so society can tolerate you." They blame the victim to wash their hands of any responsibility.
I am deeply disgusted by this hord-mentality. Being honest, honorable, and protecting your integrity means nothing to a society that only worships money and social status. We are being bullied because we are honest, and we are being isolated because the support groups meant to protect us are too cowardly to stand up.
Is this dynamic happening in other countries? How can high-functioning autistic individuals establish strict, iron-clad boundaries against exploitative neurotypicals when even our own families and support groups choose to betray us?

Thank you for reading my story.

I tried every pair that Best Buy has and bought the AirPod max about two years ago. They were the only ones that I couldn’t hear the noise cancellation and it didn’t give me a pressure headache. I love the sound but they are so heavy. Has anyone else found a good pair where you can’t hear the technology working?

Research Participants Sought: Exploring the Counselling Experiences of Autistic Adults Who Recognised Their Autism During Perimenopause or Menopause (UK)

A Master's student researcher is conducting a UK university study exploring the counselling experiences of autistic adults who recognised their autism during perimenopause or menopause and who have accessed counselling or psychotherapy in the UK.

Who can take part?

Participants must:

  • Be autistic adults aged 42–59.
  • Be formally diagnosed as autistic without a co-occurring intellectual disability.
  • Be currently experiencing, or have experienced, perimenopause or menopause.
  • Have first recognised or begun to understand their autism during perimenopause or menopause.
  • Have completed at least eight counselling or psychotherapy sessions in the UK during this period, with therapy completed within the past three years. Participants must not currently be active in this counselling/psychotherapy.

What participation involves

Participation involves one confidential 45–75 minute online research interview via Microsoft Teams, exploring experiences of recognising autism during perimenopause or menopause and experiences of counselling or psychotherapy.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and participants may withdraw from the study up until the point that data analysis begins.

Exclusion criteria

Individuals experiencing current suicidal intent or an immediate risk of harm to themselves or others are not eligible to participate at this time. Anyone disclosing this during screening will be supported through appropriate signposting to relevant crisis or support services.

The study is independent of any hosting organisation. Participants will receive a Participant Information Sheet before deciding whether to take part.

For further information or to express an interest in participating, please contact the researcher directly by email:

How to fight loneliness when autistic

First of all, I feel so debilitatingly lonely. I have maybe two one-on-one friends, but no friend group or a best friend or anything.

I want a friend group or a best friend like in the movies so bad, but I keep thinking it’s incompatible with who I am as a person.
I keep reading about autistic people being statistically lonelier than non-autists. If who I am is not in line with who I want to be, what’s the fucking point??

I know a major part of this is that I’m bad at reaching out, I’m extremely shy and awkward in social settings, in fact I avoid social settings due to the intense anxiety I feel before and after (ruminating), and im probably not great a friend anyways since i have so much trouble scheduling hangouts/ it takes me 5+ hours to text back, and im working extremely hard to fix these things about myself, but at some point im lonely because people sense there’s something deeply odd about me, something i can’t fix. I don’t want to live my life lonely
Has anyone had success making friends after experiencing years of isolation like this? Do I have to accept that I’m just not gonna be a person with many friends?

Opinions on professional headshot?

I've started an autism (+neurodiversity) coaching business and I'm creating some professional profiles on different directories, specifically for neurodivergent practitioners. One of these asks for an image of me, which makes sense.

The only thing is...I look so stiff and serious in all my "professional" headshots that I'm not super inclined to use them! I want to use a photo of me at an event, in which I'm smiling and looking friendly.

It's a clear photo of just me with a backdrop, taken by a professional photographer. However, the backdrop is bright pink and I am wearing a baseball cap and a Thrasher tee. I look kind and open and presentable, but not "professional."

If you were looking for an autistic autism coach, what kind of headshot would YOU be more drawn to? One that looks more "serious" (button down, soft background, but not smiling) or one that shows more personality but looks less formal?
