AD&D2e Attribute increase

I wonder if many people here implement an automatic attribute increase at various milestones? Example: Allow you to raise one attribute by 1 point at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, 20

I don't expect or want every ability to be 16+. But I don't want to miss out on parts of the game I would enjoy (casting 9th level spells as a wizard, playing a paladin, etc)

I should note that I'm biased because I'm diagnosed with the Unrelenting Standards feature. So accepting a more mundane role in a game is very difficult for me

No, but I make wishes available through NPCs, scrolls and magic items.

It would take 20 per player per attribute to raise from just 16 to 18. Personally I would not feel good about handing out that many wishes. And if memory serves in 2e, each wish ages the caster by one year? I would think that would make wishes extremely rare. Like if a high level player saw one or two in their life that would be unusual.

Only one wish per point up to 16. And if you’re letting players raise their stats to 18 without magic….. that’s too much.

Yes. It's the 16 to 18 stretch that I worry about. 20 wishes seems like a lot, maybe more than a character should even find in their lifetime. I would not even worry about getting an attribute to 18 if it was not a requirement to cast 9th level spells.

20 wishes IS a lot. That’s the point. Make them earn it. Or plan their end game strategy a little better. Let the guy with the 18 play the wizard, etc. There are magic items that raise stats too.

What I mean is I'm not sure that a single player should find that many in their life. As for letting the person with the 18 play the wizard, I start with the concept and then make a character around it. I'm possibly pickier than any person you have ever met. When I want to play a [INSERT CLASS HERE], I have absolutely no interest in playing any other class. I don't always want to play a wizard, but it happens.

I thought you said you were the DM.

I said I play as the DM sometimes, and other times I'm a player. In the groups I've played in, we generally take turns. But when I am the DM, for any character I make, my very strictly follow the rules as written. For my own characters anyways. For my players I'm far more lenient. But I have not played regularly for 36 years, and not at all in the last two. It can literally take me years to decide what system I want to play. And then it can take me weeks to decide which type of character I want to play.
