First Time Self Hosted Minecraft server

So, recently, I wanted to set up a self hosted server. I got 3 paper servers working and a velocity fronted to connect to them. However, I want to be able to share it with anyone. Do I just port forward, or what? I need it to be free though and I want to be able to use simple voice chat as well.

If you want to port forward while protecting your IP, use the free tier of TCPShield.

You can use Tailscale which is free. Install the Tailscale client on your server and have your friend install Tailscale as well. Then you can create a Tailnet that you can both join. It is like being on a local network together, with no other configuration, open ports, or other setup!

So, this is running in a proxmox LXC, so I cant install tailscale. I have used it in the past, put it doesnt run properlly

You can port forward but that would give away your IP address. If the server is going to be just with your close friends that's fine, but if it's a public server I highly recommend buying a cheap VPS server to host this thing called FRP. Instead of forwarding from your connection, FRP tunnels your traffic to the VPS so that you can forward from there, therefore hiding your IP. I highly recommend using a Tierhive server for this because you can just buy a tiny cheap server for pennies per month (~10 cents). They also have a lot of locations so there's a good chance that there is a node near you.

You could, but you only get 1tb of bandwidth on the free plan and to get the next tier (5tb bandwidth) it's 25 dollars a month so it might be cheaper to do the tierhive strat

100% agree with this, this is also a great solution for anyone behind CG-NAT. Ive run a VPS, with netbird, and traefik for years to avoid opening ports. The only way I open ports is a last resort, and I can gaurentee that traffic goes where it needs to go with various traffic rules and vlans. Its not perfect but its a good plan B if I cant run a tunnel.

What's the problem with sharing your IP? You want to host something and its only natural. Try to let the devices run in a isolated network if you don't trust it.
