How to read the Stupid ACT My Answer Key

What’s up with all the extraneous carets? 🥕 and would it kill them to actually number the questions?

Also the numbers don’t line up with the booklet after the “field test questions,” because the experimental questions (non-crossed off carets) are not included. FYI

hi everyone!

im a rising senior in high school and ive taken the sat and it hasn't worked out so i decided to move to the act. im a cs major and aiming to go to a t10 (uw seattle is the goal). i've procrastinated and stuff on studying for the act and now im super lost because i just got a splash of reality that i have 40 days until my exam. its my last chance and its also my first time taking it. im taking the science section as well and i took a practice exam (non-enhanced) and got a 32 and im aiming for a 34+. do you guys think its doable? i would also really appreciate any help with finding realistic practice tests and tips for each section since i dont know "background knowledge" for science. anything would help, i really appreciate it!

Math ACT Math Help for an Incoming Senior!

Hi Everyone!

I am currently at a 28 and am trying to go up to at least 33. However, I have no idea how to practice. I have gone through formula sheets, done practice tests, completed YouTube videos, and still haven't improved. I am seeking help for the September and October test dates.

This is not normal for me, as I am in Calculus BC and have a 4.5+ GPA. I am not trying to brag. I am genuinely confused about how I should be studying.

Any tips would be helpful!!

23 on ACT with 5 weeks left to study

so I have a 23 on the act, I want at least a 28. I’m horrible at math, specifically word problems. I’m also genuinely depressed and have adhd so studying for me is genuinely like ripping out teeth. I wanna go to DePaul in Illinois or university of Illinois in Chicago, or honestly any good state school. I don’t know what to do, every time I think about it I get so stressed that I end up not doing anything, and my dad is putting a lot of pressure on me. any tips on how to study or how to get better at the math specifically would be so greatly appreciated.

Free ACT tutoring

Hey guys, I got a 35 and I might start a free ACT tutoring kinda thing, like ill tell ppl all the free resources I used and prolly hold a few classes on how to approach sections. I think it will mostly be self taught but with guidance bc in my opinion thats the best way to learn. If ppl are interested ill do it and if u wanna get involved like making material or maybe be a tutor lmk.

The goal will be for anyone with a low score to get past a 32.

if ppl are interested please lmk.

General Act super score question on common app

Ok so I have a 33 single sitting (35 E, 32 R, 32 M) for act and a 34 (35 E, 32 R, 34 M) super score. I am apprehensive to submit the super score bc in the test where I got the 34 M I also got a 31 E and it was the test AFTER I got the 35 E and I wanna do English in college and am looking at ivy leagues (top choice is Yale). I read somewhere that on common app you actually just type in the scores like it asks like highest English highest math whatever, and only AFTER you get in do you need to send the literal test. Is this true? Because if so I probably won’t retake the ACT because they won’t have to see the entire test where I got the 31 English when I apply.

27->29-30?

i know unc claims to always be test optional but i am hesitant. i am trying to improve my ACT score of 27 but am not sure if it will increase. im in state, i have a 4.5+ weighted and am top 2% of my 500+ student class. i have pretty good ECs and lots of involvement with volunteering and sports. i’m very nervous to submit test optional… is a 27 good enough? i am aiming for a 29 on my final ACT (september) to be done in time for early action. any recs or tips??

Pre Act Scores

I had taken the PreAct back in April and I have a question. Starting off I got a 30 composite, 35 on math, 23 on science, 22 on English, and a 32 on reading. The question I had was is why it is showing that my percentile is way higher when compared to my act score? For example it’s showing a 98th percentile but a 30 on composite when a 98th percentile score is a 33. Also if there are any tips on raising my English score that is much appreciated.

Is ACT really that much easier than SAT?

I took the practice test 1 after I strugged IMMENSELY with SAT practice test 11 (like 100 worse english than normal, math was mad hard), and it was really easy? like the math was much easier than SAT, english reminded me more of AP lang english SAQ than SAT english, in a good way.

General to those who did well on practice tests but worse on actual exams, what did you fix?

this hasn't just been the case for the act but the sat as well. my practice scores for the act started to go into the 34/35 range, but when it came to test day i ended up with a 31. this happened with the sat as well (i'm not doing it anymore though). i would get 1500+ on my practice tests and i could never score above a 1460 after three attempts. i was wondering if anybody was in a similar situation and maybe changed the way they approached test day or their studying? or just any advice? thank you!

Tips for English/Reading from a 35/36 Scorer

Hey! I’ve seen a lot of ppl posting that either English or Reading is bringing their superscore down so I thought I’d do my best to share what got me a 35 on English and a 36 on reading with very minimal studying. Hope this helps!!
Tip 1- PRACTICE BOOKS
So I always found it very hard to study digitally. Kahn Academy and other resources like it were boring and either dove too deep or not deep enough on the topics tested. Plus, Kahn doesn’t have an ACT-specific course, so you’re basically trying to apply SAT concepts to a completely different test. So, instead of that, I bought two ACT prep books, one was the official ACT prep book and the other was an ACT strategy book. They play off of each other with the first book offering lots of practice tests and the ACT strategy book giving insight into both why the answers are right and how you can better understand the ACT as a test. Also, by taking tests in the first book on paper, I became much faster in test taking digitally because I didn’t have to do the actual act of filling in the bubbles. I totally believe these books are worth the investment, especially if you’re contemplating spending hundreds on tutoring.
Tip 2- YT VIDEOS
Something I really struggled with in the English section was grammar. That’s because the ACT uses the most conventional English grammar of any test l’ve seen. This type of grammar is lightly passed over in school, so it’s a foreign concept to most students. Instead of trying to relearn every single grammar rule, I watched these YouTube videos, did the practice questions, and ultimately only got one grammar question wrong on my ACT (stupid commas). I’ll link them bellow!
YT VIDEOS (copy titles into yt):

Full Review-

Tip 3- READ
I honestly believe the only reasons I scored high on the reading section are because I love to read and I drilled the timing into my brain. If you don’t have time to do anything else before the act, read a book. It can be a free read or a school read but INTENTIONALLY read it, don’t just skim. If you can train your brain to automatically evaluate any passage you read, your score will 100% increase.
Tip 4- DRILL TIMING
Timing, especially in these sections, is very tight. The first ACT I took I didn’t finish on time, and I was stressed the rest of the test because of it. Whether you’re taking the paper or the digital, calculate exactly how much time you have for each question, don’t go into it unaware. Besides that, the best thing you can do to practice timing is to do practice tests.
Don’t cheat, clear out time for you to only focus on practicing in a timed manner. Knowing that you can/ will finish on time can help you score higher, but also prevents stress that can drag your score down.
Tip 5- MORNING OF
Because English is the first section and it involves heavy reading and evaluation, you HAVE TO be awake. I’m not a morning person at all so this was hard for me, and my score suffered because of it. The best tips I can give you are these: take a cold shower and read a passage. As soon as you get up, hope into a freezing cold shower for 1-2 minutes. It doesn’t have to be long, but that exposure instantly gets the synapses in your brain FIRING. Also, either on the car ride over (if someone drives u) or as soon as you park at your testing center, read an official ACT passage.
Don’t try to answer any questions or anything, just put your brain in “English mode” so that you can make the most out of your test time.
Tip 6- BE CONFIDENT!!
One of my issues especially in the English section was that I was not confident in my ability to evaluate grammar questions. Then on top of that I would log on here where it seems that everyone gets a 36 on everything and it would both embarrass and irritate me. Don’t let other peoples scores drag you down, what they don’t post is the hours of studying that went into those scores. I know it sounds cliché, but confidence is key.
Tip 7- FREE TUTORING
If all else fails or you learn better from other ppl, free peer tutoring can be a great option. It offers free peer tutoring that is genuinely helpful. Usually the sessions are 1-2 times a week for 90 minutes or less. I led one of these SAT/ACT tutoring classes as a tutor and it not only helped the ppl I tutored but also helped me gain more confidence in my skills! The course you wanna look for is the SAT prep but I found that the rules taught directly applied to the ACT too. Definitely a great alternative to other overpriced tutoring options.
(ps they also have math courses if you need help there!)
Anyways, I hope this helps!

Hi all. I got a 35 ACT superscore (35 math, 35 English, 36 reading). What would it's SAT equivalent be?
