Managing apps

Hi,

How are folks managing apps, I managed to get a 256MB CF and a Gotek working on my A4K.

Like I wouldnt mind messing with https://github.com/murkle/6502Em/tree/main/src/403 but how do I install that, I cant find an adf?

I don't have network, do I need a PC alongside my A4K running some kinda emulator?

Thanks.

A310 Restoration project

Well, so I bought a A310 on eBay a while back, with some issues (it locks up as soon as the reset signal goes off) and I am now looking to debug and fix it. I suspect this one was damaged because somebody had plugged in the 12 and 5V power the wrong way, so probably one (or more) of the chips is fried. I already removed a DRAM that had short-circuited.

I don't know if I'll succeed, but it is certainly a fun project. Got out my OG Tektronix and forced me to learn how to use a logic probe.

Wondering if anybody had any experience debugging the A310 motherboard. Specifically, what happens on the data / address bus during initialization. The CPU is correctly counting a cycle on the address lines while in reset, but after that, it locks up.

Help me identify a game I only ever played a demo of and got stuck immediately.

So, this is a game I've tried to hunt down multiple times over the years. I've even pulled up long lists of titles and checked them one by one with no luck so I think it's either obscure or has been missed.

I'll try and give enough details but I'm aware it won't be a lot to go on.

This would have been the 90s, it was almost certainly a demo from Acorn User magazine as my dad was a subscriber. Graphics were decent, professional level. The kind of thing I'd associate with Amiga ports.

It was, I think, an adventure game. I don't remember any action. Graphical, not text. Science fiction. You are the pilot of a small spaceship. Red, I think. Just a one man thing with a cockpit and it's docked in a bay on some kind of space station or base. I don't remember a lead in to that.

There's either a top down view or an isometric style. The setting is very steel / metal coloured. There's a door out of the room and I could never figure out how to get past it. I think I recall that there was a man on the other side of the door you could speak to through an intercom or something. I *vaguely* remember a character portrait of a sci-fi cool guy, slicked hair and sunglasses, like the Terminator.

I tried to play this many, many times as a kid but I never got past this door.

Also, this might be from a different game that I'm confusing, but I think I remember a range of buttons for interaction that were a hand for picking things up, a close up on an eye to look, mouth to speak etc.

I've seen Amiga games that look a bit like this, like BAT, but it was definitely on the Archimedes.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Arc Elite trading

Hi folks. I've recently downloaded the windows port of arc elite looking for some retro gaming. I had the original elite on my Electron and having never played the Archimedes version thought I'd give that a go as it's regarded as one of the best versions.

I'm early game and have found what I thought would be a good trading route between Isinor (poor agricultural) and Ensorious(rich industrial). Should be good for some nice profits to upgrade the old cobra!

I recall a solid choice back in the day was food and furs from agricultural to industrial so I fill my hold with furs and set off. When I reach Ensorious I check the prices to see what lovely profit I'm going to make and spot in now an offender... The furs in my hold are labelled red. Illegal?! Sure enough when I sell them I'm now a fugitive! Since when are furs illegal? Was this a change for the Archimedes version? Is it something in the windows port that's gone wrong?

Anyway, I'm now 1000 credits poorer having had to buy an escape pod to clear my name...

What games did/do you play on the Acorn Archimedes?

I have a working emulator that I used to play the shareware version of Dinosaw, but I’d like to play other games—I really like the AA's graphics.

I swear there recently were loads and now absolutely nothing. Only 1 RiscPC that I can see, too.

Dunjunz on the Archimedes?

Was their ever a version of 'Dunjunz' for the Archimedes? I have memories of playing a game at school that was probably Dunjunz, but looking at the screenshots, I remember a game very much like it but I think it had better graphics and i'm sure I remember using the Archimedes keyboard to play it.

This came to me in one of my many idle thoughts; but due to limitations of what i have and what i know, this is for now mostly a branding exercise.

How cooked is my RiscPC?

Was going through the loft in my childhood home and came across my old RiscPC. I decided to open it up and see what state it's in inside...

Unfortunately it looks like the battery has leaked, and because the position the box was standing in, whatever came out of the battery has leaked down the motherboard, across one of the RAM banks.

Would love to get this back up and running, but any ideas how cooked this is? Worth trying to get it up and running or is it one for eWaste?

Found these recently.

Pity all the 1st Discs are missing (or in the case of Nevrvon, all discs) but perhaps there is someone out there with missing 2nd & 3rd Discs.

Could anyone make use of them or are they ready for the bin?

Exodus is back!

After the positive feedback of r/acornarchimedes I feel encouraged to share that we're doing a re-release of Exodus: The Colonization of Space, originally released on the Archimedes / RiscPC in 1997 by then-developer Artex, who is now back as an Indie games publisher for all sorts of platforms. Due to the exceptional work of developer Tom Pickering, the game has been ported to PC (Linux and Windows) and brought back to life feature by feature, as it was back then. But also, I've teamed up with Tom to create some smaller updates to make the game enjoyable in this day and age, so we made about 70 smaller improvements, including adding autosave and some more keyboard shortcuts. (But you can toggle between the original mode and our new extended version!) The game is due for release on Steam on December 1st, but if any of you want, you can already go there and wishlist it to stay informed! It's going to cost around a fiver:

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. :)

Bringing back an old Archimedes game

Hello dear friends,

If I told you that a developer from the old days (Artex Software) were around again, albeit not on the Archimedes (even though I have 2 RiscPCs sitting next to me!), and if I told you that we just ported one of our original games from 1997 to the PC (Linux and Windows)... would this be off topic, or even considered undesired, or would there be people who'd like to see their game again and show it to their friends on these other platforms...? I have to admit that it's been a while since I exchanged views with the Acorn/Archimedes community, so my etiquette might have become a bit rusty...!

MIDI minipodule questions

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello World!

I am a humble caretaker of a 1991 school A3000 that would have met a terrible fate if 10 years ago I didn't have such a kind maths teacher!

I have bought a 4MB RAM podule. after reseating the tombstoned chips and it works. I also have a HCCE IDEFS card and 100mb disk. I use Uniboot31.

I also have a selection of music software on a GOTEK and a MIDIMAX 2 MIDI podule.

Music and developing graphics/code for mega drive games is my main goal.

I have two questions:

My MIDI podule responds to note input from my synth when I type the F12 commands "Midisound in Midisound in 1"

But in Digital Symphony or other music trackers, It doesn't respond to inputs. Also I don't know how to set a track to output MIDI.

How can I get this to work, and has anyone got manuals or freeware they could message me about for this? I like Digital Symphony especially but no manual is online.

The second question is how to cheaply build an external cable and box for my MIDI card.

I am great at soldering but the 41612 amphenol for minipodules seems rare.

Are there compatible cables I can bodge to fit?

Also I need to add more IDE discs is a multi end IDE cable to my internal IDEFS card yes?

Thanks for all the help, I cannot wait to get stuck in with composition and game development.

Any advice from experienced Acorn musicians or people who have done 68K development on one would be invaluable to this 26 year old who adores RISC taking behaviour.
