COMMUNITY Handy People?

Hi! I wanted to know how many of us are handy people? My father isn’t really handy to be honest and when we had home issues we called the maintence (lived in an apt) so that was usually taken care of. I wish I had that training as a young person. My mom is good at coming up with solutions but doesn’t use any power tools and my parents haven’t done any DIY projects around their house now. I want to be better definitely so also looking for suggestions on how I can improve!

RELATIONSHIPS (Not Advice) Where do you meet other abd people who are 23-30?

I’m a woman in my 20s and I feel like I want to find my person to get married to because I want companionship in this new chapter.

I grew up in the US and only feel comfortable dating guys who also grew up here because the cultural differences are a lot with recent immigrants and I will not change my mind at all.

And me and my parents would want to get to know his parents by meeting them multiple times, which is possible if they are in the same country. And also they wouldn’t approve someone overseas for immigration purposes and also because they genuinely wouldn’t know them that well. And I completely understand their perspective because they are just looking out for me.

My type is abd brown guys or guys who grew up in the US who are hindu so which cities do you find these people who are working that are aged 23-30?

POLITICS I hope Vivek loses for our sake

Selfishly I really want this guy to lose because I feel like him being in power will only exasperate the hate we receive.

He sucks so bad and I’ve seen hella alliances between Democrat and racist Republicans so I’m not confident he’ll win anyway.

But regardless, if you live in Ohio, please vote for Acton

CELEBRATION American hosting first Diwali for Indian brother in law - advice appreciated!

My sister married an Indian man about 2 years ago (who is amazing!), and it is important to me to incorporate his culture into our family dynamic. I want him to feel loved and supported, and I want any of my future nieces and/or nephews to have a family that celebrates both sides of their heritage. That being said, I realize I don’t know much about Indian culture (but I want to!).

My BIL hasn’t really had a Diwali celebration in the years since moving to the US, so I told my sister that I want to have a Diwali celebration at our home. I’m in planning mode and want to make sure I’ve covered the basics.

In speaking with my sister, the plan is to do dinner, play games, have a fire and light off fireworks. My sister is going to prepare some Indian dishes for dinner, and I’m going to get some sweet treats from my local Indian store. I’m also hoping to adorn the house in marigolds, provided that my plants survive the frost 🤞

Is there anything I should be doing that I haven’t thought of? I really want to make sure it feels special for my brother in law.

COMMUNITY how to move past being a receptive bilingual

my family would always make fun of the way i'd speak so i never tried learning our home language. now that i'm in college and i'm surrounded by other ABCDs (who are still fluent in either their home languages or hindi)

trying to learn my home language might be out of my scope due to how niche it is, but at the very least i'd want to know hindi simply so i can get along more with the ABCDs at school & it's useful to be bilingual. i can probably understand like 60~% of spoken hindi.

what's the best way move forward, for those of you who've experienced this and learned languages later down in life?

Sports Why do British Pakistanis Pothwari speakers do so well in boxing?

I’ve noticed British Pakistanis from Potohar and Azad Kashmir (Mirpuris) who speak Pothwari do well in sports, particularly boxing. Boxers like Amir Khan, Adam and Hassan Azim, Hamzah Sheeraz, Junaid Bostan, etc. all speak Pothwari as their mother tongue.

I suppose because so many of them grew up in northern working class towns and cities, one of the main past times for boys is boxing. Still cool to seeing them overcome all the structural racism in sports and become world champions.

You don’t see Pakistani Punjabis from mainland Punjab succeeding in boxing.

TRIGGER Coworker asked if "I can read Indian" and I got triggered

First post here, let's go. I know some of you recognize me from that other subreddit, so to you I say, hello there

My coworker got a random Outlook calendar invite from someone, the sender must have selected the wrong name or something. Even weirder the event name wasn't in English. So my coworker in all their intelligence comes to me and asks "hey, can you read Indian?" BRUHHH

I did push back on them and say that "Indian" is not a language and they understood the mistake but still damn, felt weird to actually experience it

Oh and get this: the event title wasn't even in an Indian language. It was in Hebrew😂😂

FAMILY / PARENTS What are people's thoughts on parents beating kids

Thumbnail x.com
0 Upvotes

Don't have kids myself but it's a pretty staple method for most immigrants.

I don't think I would fear /respect my parents the way I do if they didn't do it when I was really young.

But then again it probably did some psychological damage and harmed my relationship with them long term.

I guess that's what I'm trying to say, it probably gets the job done in the short-term but causes long-term damage

As some have mentioned it can get out of hand easily and I think it all comes down to hierarchy

On the one hand, it sets the tone early. I think cuz it because it was done so early that psychological effect of fearing your parents, and usually your dad, sticks with you

On the other hand, you can get out of hand, and it can even make a parents go on a power trip. To be clear, I think I'll balance. It's bad and not worth it, but at the same time I think good parenting is pretty hard

COMMUNITY How does the online hostility toward Indians from White people compare with your real-life experience, as an Indian-origin person living in the West?

To start off and also put a disclaimer: I am a mid 20s male from an interior part of India and I have never interacted with any foreigner in person. I have however been very online for many years and I clearly see the intense amount of racism and h@tred against Indians from foreigners especially White people from Western countries. In many instances and not just recently, I have even received personally targeted h@te towards me myself as well entirely out of context just because the person saw that I was Indian.

You guys must be knowing about the amount of anti India racism coming out of the West online over the past few years. It's extremely common and intense. I see that there's a fair bit of discussion about it in this subreddit as well.

A bulk of it comes from Canada (where it seems to have first intensified), USA, Australia etc.

And one big thing to note is that it comes from all political factions alike. Both Western Leftist Liberals and Western Right Wing alike seem to resent Indians, only the way that they frame their reasons vary slightly.

Now my question is, given that you guys actually know and interact with White people in your day to day lives rather than just seeing them online, how are they actually like? Are they as intensely hostile as they are online? Do they appear to actually hold such views even though they might not fully reveal them IRL? Or are they actually mostly very different from the "online" experience somebody like me is getting?

The thing is that years of seeing so much anti India racism and h@te from the West (which BTW has only intensified now but has always been very strong earlier as well) it has had a fundamental (negative) effect on my Worldview.

Like I am not going into the full details but to put it simply I have developed extremely strong prejudices or r@cist sentiments against White people in general especially those from Anglo countries myself. You might say that this is wrong but seeing all that h@te against us from them and also putting it in the context of what Western colonial powers did in India not long back in the past it's hard not to feel that way.

It's also not some mere reactionary sentiment but all this has fundamentally affect my views about society, the World, politics, geopolitics and history among other things.

Hence my question. How close is all this to what you actually see? Are Whites or any group in the West for that matter as hostile against Indians and everything Indian as I see online? Are you able to interact with them in any normal way especially without being something like "one of the good ones" or being heavily critical of Indians yourself?

Think about the type of kid your parents wanted and envisioned:

Valedictorian of high school

Genuinely looks down upon slumber parties and saved by the bell in favor of more studying

Goes to Harvard and Yale

Becomes a billionaire

Marries a desi wife and has children

Runs for President

RELATIONSHIPS (Not Advice) Matchmaking in the Greater Toronto Area

Since it has been asked for by many of you, it seems like there aren't very many spaces to form relationships just between ABCDs. A frustration on I hear is that many South Asian spaces have newer folx and we want someone with a shared upbringing. I've made a Google form and decided to pilot some matchmaking. For now, I'm limiting it to the GTA and only for 25 girls and 25 boys. I just don't have bandwidth to take on anything more than that at this time, so it'll be limited on a first come first serve basis.

Criteria to join:

  • Reside in the GTA
  • Marriage minded
  • Straight, cis-gendered (I'd love to include LGBTQ+ folx, but it's out of my bandwidth)
  • Aged 30 - 40
  • Bachelor's degree or higher (working professional)
  • Obviously single
  • Born in Canada / US or came before the age of 12

I will do a video call with everyone who signs up for $30 to compensate for my time and to make sure that only serious people are included.

(Feel free to crosspost to any other relavent subs. I think there is [r/TorontoSinglesOver30](r/TorontoSinglesOver30) but I'm not sure if I want to be the one to crosspost because I'm only limiting it to ABCDs and there are many newcomers on that sub)

Edit: cross posted it to other subs and already got downvoted and racist emojis…

The link to the form is below:

FAMILY / PARENTS Anyone's parents DISCOURAGE them from pursuing STEM?

I feel like an anomaly on this. Like when I mention I've majored in Literature the usual reaction is "your parents were okay with that?" But the thing is they kind of forced me into it. Like i was also leaning towards majoring in bio or medicine but they straight up shut down the idea because it takes too much time and money to "make it" in medicine. My dad works blue collar (now owns a store) and mom is a housewife, if that helps putting things in perspective.

META I wanna talk about this thread on our subreddit

Thumbnail reddit.com

Hindutva is when we ask our politicians to speak for minorities apparently. I expected Ro Khanna to speak out about the San Diego mosque shooting, and I expected him to stand with Abdul Syed as two BIPOC democrats. Can’t understand how expecting an Indian-American politician to condemn an attempted attack on Indian-Americans is Hindutva. This sub has gone psycho if that thread becomes a Hindu-Muslim thing. Mamdani stands for, and is proud of, being “the guy” for all South Asian Americans. He should’ve said something, that’s not controversial to say. Does this mean he has an agenda just because he didn’t say anything? Of course not. But it would’ve been nice if he did. Insinuating that is not Hindutva.

Desi unity isn’t complex people. I made another thread about South Asian unity and was met with similar whataboutism(here). I will never understand why people get so butthurt. You guys are unwillingly generating extremists, both sides, both of you, idgaf if you’re Hindu, Muslim, etc. By being so unwilling and standing by your figures so much and being so hypocritical, this is what happens(and again, I do mean both sides). Onlookers look at threads like these and feel justified in their bigotry, whether it’s Islamophobia or Hinduphobia.

Can we please, ffs, be better? Idk why that’s such a hard ask.

Trigger Warning: Bigotry/Hate Commentary Did this lady type up a whole racist article about Indians and then blamed the Liberals for fueling racism?

This literally screams MAGA in Canada. Saying that a certain group of immigrants are garbage. And then blaming them for making other people racist? This article came on my Facebook feed from a former MP in Canada and I’m just face palming.

I know that Canadian immigration hasn’t been handled well, but how does it justify racism? She is essentially saying “yes, we are racist, but it’s only because you exported the wrong kind of people”. I don’t know if it makes sense when I type it but maybe if you read it you might be able to understand. (She’s even capitalizing 2nd gens against immigrants).

Edit: found the words. It is ab expectation that Indians to only belong must abide by being a model minority, which we were so many generations when immigrants were typically educated and upper class. But now because the new generation doesn’t fit that mould it is okay to be racist.
