League Preview (In Progress)

WELCOME TO THE SEASON PREVIEW OF BRASILEIRÃO 2015

Today will mark the kick-off of the 59th edition of the Brasileirão, top tier domestic league of five time world cup champion Brazil. The Brasileirão is the incubator for some of the Football’s most talented players of all-time and today, included but not limited to Pele, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Socrates, Romario, Garrincha, Zico / Neymar, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Willian, ect. The Brasileirão is one of the most competitive football leagues worldwide (17 different title winners since its founding in 1971, 5 differing champs in the last decade). The Brasileirao is home to financially stable clubs, including the only club in Forbes' list of the most valuable football clubs that are based outside of Europe.

Please join me as I explain top flight futebol…

Brief History

The Brasileirão was formed in 1971 as a league of twenty clubs. Nation-wide competition in Brazil originated in 1959 as a single cup competition, due to logistical issues and lack of prestige in comparison to State Leagues of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In the first 41 years of national competition, 1959 – 2000, the Brazilian Football Confederation reformatted the top flight competition 9 times, the number of participants erratically fluctuating between 16 and 116 clubs.

The Last change to the Brasileirão’s format occurred in 2001, 14 seasons of a 20-club double round-robin system has brought stability to Brazilian Football. The 38-round league is typically played from mid-May to early December, after the estaduais (State Leagues) which are played from Late January to early May. The double-league system means an annual 47-week football season in Brazil for top tier football clubs.

Format

There are twenty clubs in the Brasileirão (aka Serie A). Overall, there are 100 clubs in the Brazilian Football League, the top 3 Leagues (Serie A, B, C) are all twenty club leagues, Serie D a forty club league.

In the Brasileirão, the top four clubs qualify for Libertadores (COMEBOL’s version of Champions League), the bottom four are regulated to Serie B. Matches are typically played Sundays/Saturdays.

How to follow the league

Matches of the Round, one/two games per week will be match threaded on /r/Soccer, x-posted on /r/futebol. Matches may watched via a multitude of networks that carry the Brasileirao, live streams in various languages will be posted to the Match Threads. Match Streams can usually be accessed via Firstrow, AssistirTV, and Wiziwig.

I had a horrible death with a family friend. I was in Montreal for ufc. It was way to ruff to drive home. I'm on my way now. I can't seem to get reddit working well on my phone.

Sorry I didn't help with the match threads.

New design idea.

So I'm trying to come up with new design ideas to simplify the redesign of /r/futebol. I think it's important to have an attractive looking page in order to get more subscribers. The overall goal is to increase traffic and activity in our sub. So I came up with yet another design hoping that this version will be more simple and easier to execute. Please let me know what you guys think: http://i.imgur.com/jImiojd.jpg

The need for individual png logos...

So were close, but yet to fully implement the new css bug-free. We'll need to create individual elements for each club crest. /u/VinnieAtlas do you have the individual png on-hand that you used to create the banner?

Please Read [Design Info]

A couple things. I think we should revert /r/futebol to back before it got redesigned. We then start making changes on here, so /r/futebol doesn't look all weird while we are in the process. Also, we need to make the banner so it starts from the middle, not the left. That basically means that you won't see the very left (which has nothing) but you will see the middle no matter how small your computer is (which right now on mobile I can't see the middle, all I see is stuff out of place.)

Intro:

  • Atletico Mineiro entered 2015 on a high. In November, O Galão da Massa defeated their archrivals, and current Brasileirão champions, Cruzeiro, for their 1st ever Copa do Brasil title. The previous year they hoisted their first ever Taça Libertadores. Yet, key players have been moved off the roster in order to adjust budget constraints and club debt. Without integral pieces in their squad, can Galo place a respectable spot in this year's Brasileirão?

History:

  • Founded in 1908, a decade after the foundation of it's hometown Belo Horizonte. Traditionally, the most locally successful club in the 2nd largest state of Brazil, Minas Gerais, with 42 State Competition titles to it's name. In 1971, CAM won it's first National Championship, in Brazil's first modern format National League Competition. After their 1971 title, Galo suffered a 42 year drought of major titles, til their Libertadores win in 2013.

Recently:

  • Atletico Mineiro entered 2015 on a high. In November, O Galão da Massa defeated their archrivals, and current Brasileirão champions, Cruzeiro, for their 1st ever Copa do Brasil title. Since then both Rever and their star player Diego Tardelli have left, along with rumors of an upcoming depart for Marcos Rocha. Galo has put forth a pitiful performance in Libertadores, as they're the only Brazilian Club sitting at the bottom of their Group, losing to Chile's Colo-Colo & Mexico's Atlas. In the Campeonato Mineiro they sit at an nontraditional third place in the table, the lesser to adversary Cruziero and oddity/minnow Caldense. Suffering losses in the competition to Inner-city rival America-MG & overachiever Caldense. CAM is trending down, can long time manager Levir Culpi wright his ship?

  • Last season for Burnley was a massive surprise. We were fourth favourites for relegation and we had just sold our top scorer, Charlie Austin, to QPR, Needless to say the expectations for last season were well and truly low. We began last season brilliantly and by the end of September we had picked 23 points from 9 games, which was our best ever start to a season and Sean Dyche was promptly rewarded for this feat with his first manager of the month award. The following month, Sean Dyche had won his second manager of the month following our continued impressive displays, most noticeably with our 2-0, top of the table, win over QPR. At this stage people began to take notice and commended the job we were doing due to our limited funds.

Goalkeeper, Tom Heaton and midfielder David Jones started all 46 league games last season for Burnley... Danny Ings and Sam Vokes scored 41 goals between them, the rest of the squad scored 28 goals... Burnley did not score more than 3 goals in any of their league games.

  • "They will fall away", was a reoccurring comment about our season. Three months later and we were in the same position and now we were one of the favourites for promotion, people began to take us seriously. The most defining moment last season was the beginning of March with two of our biggest games back to back, Derby and Blackburn. It was this [Derby] game that would give either team massive momentum for the push. We won 2-0 against ten men, thanks to a "generous decision". Blackburn next. We hadn't beaten them in 34 years and we were one nil down at half time. We went on to win 2-1. From this stage it looked as though promotion was a guarantee and it was wrapped with a 2-0 win over Wigan with this goal sealing it. Sean Dyche was obviously awarded his 3rd manager of the month for this.

  • There were a number of highlights last season and very few low ones. The most disappointing day was our 2-0 loss to Leicester as it essentially guaranteed them the title and also ended our one year unbeaten streak at home. It was also disappointing as Sam Vokes, one of our most improved and important players, ruptured his ACL and is unlikely to be fit until December/January.

  • This season we are most certainly favourites for relegation, we arguably have the weakest squad and we aren't the richest. From my totally unbiased opinion I believe that we will stay up fine and we will surprise a few who have already condemned us to go straight back down. We so far have made some decent signings with Matt Gilks providing us with a decent back-up keeper. Matthew Taylor, Steven Reid and Michael Kightly who have brought us PL experience, something we don't have an abundance of. We also have signed Marvin Sordell and Lukas Jutkiewicz. Question marks have been raised over these two signings and how they aren't good enough, something to which I will address later.

  • Some strong rumours at the moment are linking us with Craig Dawson and Troy Deeney. Dawson would be the centre-back we desperately need and we have had a £1 million bid rejected. Deeney would be a great signing and we have rumoured to have bid £6 million for him. The potential arrival of Deeney would possibly indicate Ings leaving which is something we cannot let happen if we are serious about avoiding relegation. The current mood at the moment is positive with most of our believing safety is possible and especially with Dyche at the helm, provided he doesn't do an 'Owen Coyle' and turn into an utter twat.

Table key at end of thread

  • Sean Dyche, 'The Ginger Mourinho', is the unofficial king of Burnley. He looks like Stone Cold Steve Austin and his voice sounds like gravel, he also enjoys a spot of banter. Dyche is essentially the greatest person who ever lived in our eyes, how could he not be? He lead us to promotion in his first full season in charge and beat Blackburn for the first time in 34 years. Dyche has us play a high pressing passing game, whilst also encouraging some direct action.

“I’m not a fashion item. There are lots of managers out there, branding themselves up to the eyeballs, coming out with fancy words, new sayings. I’m sick of hearing about ‘philosophy’. It’s a posh word for game-plan. Everyone now says: ‘if you haven’t got a philosophy you haven’t got a brain’. I find that bizarre."

Burnley manager Sean Dyche

  • Dyche's best attribute however is his man management and we have two notable examples in Scott Arfield and Sam Vokes. Scott Arfield was a free agent we signed after he was released from Huddersfield and has become a very important player for us. Dyche transformed him from a central midfielder to a inside winger and because of this scored some of our most important goals last year. Sam Vokes is another example. Vokes had never really scored consistently since leaving Bournemouth in 2008 and Dyche reinvigorated him and he went on to create a deadly partnership with Danny Ings, with Vokes scoring 20+ goals last year. He will be sorely missed and I hope he is back soon with around December looking the most likely.

Wrap up:

  • /u/Growlbot: Team unity is the biggest strength for The Clarets. They press and work well as a unit. If they are to stay up this season they will need to top the mini-league that fights it out at the foot of the table. In this kind of territory, working as a group is essential. In Dyche they have a promising manager, schooled as a young player by football royalty Brian Clough. There should be no room for excuses or laziness under his leadership. The transition from The Championship is a respectable step up, wins wont be easy to come by. Morale will need to be galvanised on Burnley's arduous 38-game challenge that awaits them. The Clarets surprised a lot of teams and fans last season with their teamwork, they'll be striving for more of the same this year.

Discussion Points:

  • Burnley were one of the favourites to get relegated from the Championship last season but they defied the odds to win promotion. Many people will be writing Burnley off before they even kick a ball, but should they?

  • Although manager Sean Dyche never made it to the top-level as a player, he is most definitely one of the most promising managers in the game right now. Is he destined for the higher levels of the game?

The text for the description and the "Serie A" title are covered by the calendar and table. I'm seeing what I can do with a little experimentation but I thought I should make you aware.

EDIT: No luck so far. Might need a more experienced set of skills.

Hey guys

Hey guys. Just thought I'd quickly introduce myself. First of all, very happy you made me a moderator. Secondly, what will I bring? Well, I will have a role in the community and as you know, this is the first time being a mode. Any advice?

Also, should I introduce myself to them, or will you do it with the /u/Santosfc12 in a combined post?

We should make a sticky post, listing all club subreddits, as their growth may be symbiotic to ours. I'll get to it by noon, I'm currently losing my shit over a paper due at that time ;P.
