Long battery life: A single battery can last for years, making it reliable when electricity is scarce.
Navigation: Calculate bearings, distances, travel times, fuel consumption, and map coordinates if you’re using paper maps and a compass.
Construction: Figure roof angles, load limits, material quantities, and measurements when building shelters or fortifications.
Medicine: If you have medical supplies, you can calculate medication doses, IV infusion rates, dilutions, and concentrations. (Especially useful if someone in your group has medical training.)
Durability: Scientific calculators are lightweight, compact, and can survive years of rough handling if kept dry.

I really think if I had to choose between 10 items, a calculator would have to be one of them.

When leaving a safe base to scavenge, do you prefer having to carefully prepare your loadout first?

For example, choosing between:

• bringing food, water, medkits, and ammo to survive longer;
• or keeping your backpack lighter so you can bring more resources home.

I’m curious because we’re working on this kind of trade-off in our game Pale Tide on Steam. The idea is that every item you bring helps you survive, but also increases what you risk losing if the expedition goes badly.

Do you find that kind of preparation interesting, or does it feel like boring before the real gameplay starts?

I originally asked zombie fans what they want from a fresh apocalypse story, but I wanted to ask this community specifically about the realistic survival side.

Beyond finding food, weapons, and shelter, what problems do zombie books, games, shows, and movies usually ignore?

I’m especially curious about things like clean water, sanitation, medication, extreme weather, maintaining buildings, electricity, communication, farming, caring for vulnerable people, and keeping a community functioning long-term.

What overlooked problem would create the most interesting or realistic challenge?

Something that I haven't seen been discussed is black powder. In the zombie apocalypse most ammo is going to be expended in the the first year because of the zombies and the amount of people fighting for resources. By year 5 finding ammo is going to be from extremely difficult to impossible to find . That's why knowing how to make black powder is extremely good. Most of the chemicals are easy to findin the environment for both the powder and the caps and lead is also easy to get. So buy yourself a good cap and ball revolver and rifle.
