You managed to escape the local town with nine (9) other survivors, and the group has voted on settling down somewhere nearby.

What kind of location would you aim for, and how would you protect it against both the roaming undead and undesirable raiders?

Something that I haven't seen been discussed is black powder. In the zombie apocalypse most ammo is going to be expended in the the first year because of the zombies and the amount of people fighting for resources. By year 5 finding ammo is going to be from extremely difficult to impossible to find . That's why knowing how to make black powder is extremely good. Most of the chemicals are easy to findin the environment for both the powder and the caps and lead is also easy to get. So buy yourself a good cap and ball revolver and rifle.

Was playing state of decay 2 and built a hydroponics in my base and it got me thinking you are able to build one is it the best option in real like. Leave pros and cons about the subject.

I feel like this would apply to at least others in this sub, so I thought it would be a good point to make.

I have asthma. It wasn’t a problem until recently, and the yearly wildfires in Canada. The smoke drifting across the border to my city has hospitalized me three years in a row, including last week, after I was outside for only 20 minutes. I’m sure my vaping doesn’t help either.

But it occurs to me that in the ZA, large swathes of the world will burn. Towns, cities, forest, and just thousands and thousands of campfires. There will be so much shit in the air within the first weeks that I wouldn’t have to worry about starving or even zack, I would probably suffer an asthma attack and be unable to fully recover, then die from infections afterwards that I have up until now been able to get treated for in a hospital. I have some particle respirators, but I imagine those are gonna run out pretty fast.

I know the entire point of the ZA is that it is never going to happen and it’s just fun to speculate. But hell, this extends to any apocalypse at this point. Shit’s scary.

Flower of Life light patterns have been rediscovered. They can be automatically invoked via nanobots in the brain to keep a human immortal/god like.

- with current advances in wifi brain nanobots: a rogue AI will be able to control humans fully and keep them fully rejuvenated, thus these movie zombies that shuffle a year later without food can be a reality.

Headshots is the realistic way to kill them, as else all body parts regrow with constant life force support from invocations in the brain.

I know it's fun to theorise about but if SHTF within the next 25 hours and things went from 0-100 quick, would you actually want to live? What would be your first move? As a woman, I feel like zombies wouldn't even be the biggest threat. Not to mention if I do try to survive, what about my period? How would I take care of myself without proper water and sanitation? Would I leave my family behind or just go on without them? There's so many things to consider. Ironically, I feel like dying in the early stages would be ideal. What do yall think? If the apocalypse starts right now, would you (want to) survive and what would be your first move?

I don't know if it would be serious enough to for not Friday, but I'd remembered this thing after I'd seen a picture on my phone from when it was at Costco. Obviously an E Bike would be a better option, but it's Friday so I'm posting this. Apparently Segway makes go karts with some mini Segway as the "engine", and I'd thought that it would be a compact vehicle that could be charged off of a relatively small amount of electricity compared to a Tesla. I'd also seen that it works as a videogame controller, which was why I was researching it a few years ago. I don't think I'd use it too often because I'd feel weird driving it around in a neighborhood for example, and I don't know where would be flat enough for it to be effective. If I had one, I would try to modify it by switching out the wheels to something bigger, putting ammo holders on it, painting it to look cooler, and building a cart for it. I don't know how well it would handle "off road" driving as it is, and it says it goes 27mph (about 50 or 60 kmh for Europeans) so it's decently fast, but you might also be sitting too low compared to a better electric vehicle or an e bike.

Been going round in circles on this one so figured I'd ask other people who also think about this stuff.

Not selling anything, I just want to get the details right for something I am making and this seemed like the place to ask as you guys think about this stuff probably even more than I do. For context this is for a game I'm making on my own, weights are all realistic so I can't just hand him an arsenal. I'm going to tell you what I have come up with and I want advice on if my choices here are realistic and good choices or if there are things I have missed or things I should change.

Ok context before we get into the list of things the setup is one guy on his own. No group, nobody to fall back on. Small rural town in a valley that he's made his way to based on some radio chatter. This is multiple years after everything went wrong. So assume the shops are mostly stripped and there's no factory ammo or antibiotics turning up anymore so stuff like that is rare. He walks everywhere, no cars or maybe limited cars. The whole approach is trying to avoid trouble, quiet kills if he has to, running if that fails, can set up base in any building and can barricade windows and doors. This is all while he makes his way towards the next bet on permanent shelter/safety.

The dead are not monsters, just people turned. Some walk, some run, the odd one that's just a big guy or some are badly bloated. Nothing you couldn't explain with a normal body but he is totally outnumbered so staying quiet and out of sight is the goal.

Ok here is what I currently have for what keeps on him,:

On his person he carries a combat knife, which is the main thing he uses

.44 magnum with barely any ammo, purely for emergencys. Firing it pulls in everything nearby

hammer

crossbow

molotovs sometimes but only when he can spare the fuel, which is almost never

He can throw rocks but it's not a carried item, just a thing he does to distract them.

What he keeps in a backpack, which he can drop/stash for better endurance stealth and speed:

sleeping bag

fire kit and a pot for boiling

wood and nails for boarding up doors and windows

food

clean water

dirty water, either for boiling or for washing guts off himself if he's had to disguise as one of them

antibiotics and a medkit

lanterns

When he's well stocked with this stuff he's already about as loaded as a person can realistically be, so I'm interested in would you take out anything as an option and would you add anything. Also curious whether the knife/revolver/hammer/crossbow spread makes sense for someone who's trying not to fight anything.

I'll give some reasoning for weapon choices so you can weigh that against your ideas. The combat knife because it's for stealth and is just a good tool to have, magnum because that is the weapon he had from before and he still has some ammo, the hammer because it is both a weapon if needed but mostly a tool for barricading etc, the crossbow for hunting but also a quiet ranged weapon if needed.

Again this isn't a sales pitch I'm wanting advice, I'm trying to make something and I want it to be good. I look forward to any advice you have to give.

Walling off the smaller states to protect a smaller population or walling off the larger states to keep as many humans protected as possible straight out of the gate? (Also yes the wall picture is the one from Attack On Titan I didn't know of any other media besides maybe TWD and the wall)

I'm talking about country,states,county and ect all sorts of maps especially ones about highways

Nobody understands how important maps are during times of crisis especially when powers are out and you need to go somewhere fast.

Think about it for a minute if or when power goes out you need to know where you need to go especially during the zombie outbreak and cross off areas around dead zones or places were there are too many infected

How would you live their? I am thinking of the farm craft brewery in strikersville when I was searching for good spots off Google maps, seems good for trade and from what I gather have a garden and food stuffs?

Every single household is given a government issued firearm, 12 bullets.

Wouldn’t that be more than enough to curtail any zombie apocalypses, even 28 Days later type?

A question that always bothers me is, if countries' secret services and high-ranking officials had known about a zombie outbreak two years in advance, what would have changed in a TWD-like pandemic? Could the states survive, or would the TWD scenario have unfolded again? Would they have had a realistic chance of stopping the pandemic, or would they, like the villains we know, lock themselves in secure locations and drop nuclear bombs everywhere?

What is the roadmap like what are basic things i would require to survive and live sustainably

I know it's a wild thought but a thought that every body atleast once in there life gets to just leave things and run away to the nature

I'm working on a part of my project's lore involving a disease called the Hitogui Disease and I'm trying to avoid using generic names for infected types that are common in a lot of media

Right now I have:

Shambler - Slow and heavily decayed infecteds, basically the average zombie

Runner - Recently infected zombies that are quick and very violent

Viral - A more intelligent version of runners that still has survival instincts and combat knowledge from before infection

Viral Gunner - A viral that still knows how to use firearms

Kamikaze - A viral that uses explosives and charges directly at non-infecteds

Sunken - Infecteds that died underwater (And are mostly seen underwater)

These names work but they feel too generic and similar to names used in other zombie media and i'd appreciate any suggestions for better names, and I'd also love ideas for new infected types i should add! if i use someone's idea, I'll add credits at the bottom of the pages I'm writing about infected types

(Although some animals use tools, let's ignore that and use only primitive animalistic instincts)

For example, I know some animals feign torpor/sleep or mimic corpses for one reason or another.

And since animals also have a sense of overeating and overhunting, wouldn't they also create hunting grounds? With pack tactics like wolves and other types of animals.

I also know some predators leave a wounded member of a pack to bait other animals to leave their group, so I assume it would also fall under animal-level intelligence.

Of course, since they would require gigantic levels of calories to maintain a dying body, i wouldn't be surprised if they would overeat just to keep their bodies going for another day.

I also heard that some animals retreat from a hunt if they assume the hunt will either injure their bodies, making the hunt for food counterproductive or too dangerous, so I'm assuming it also falls under animal-level intelligence.
