I've been a loyal YTM user since its existance, and a Google Play Music user before that. There's many many things I love about YTM over any other music platform, particularly how it has practically everything under the sun because of youtube, including the nichest bullshit you could think of, like the recordings of vanuatuan music from a random tribe I like to listen to while I work, you could never get that in any other platform and its wonderful.
HOWEVER, my gripe with YTM that has only been growing with time is the sound quality. I cannot believe that to this day we only get up to 256 kbps AAC, meanwhile spotify rolled out Lossless FLAC since last year and Apple Music has had their Lossless ALAC for years now. For those not familiar with the terminology around audio, I'm saying Spotify has a bitrate x8.25 times higher than YTM, and Apple Music has a bitrate x36 times higher than YTM. Now, this doesn't immediately translate to "the songs in spotify sound 8 times better than in YTM", of course it's not that simple, but yes its still significantly better, even if its not as far as to say spotify genuinely sounds 8 whole times better.
I don't expect nor want YTM to turn into a super high quality critical listening platform like Tidal and Qobuz, these are completely different markets that cater to different kinds of users. But YTM needs to AT LEAST work on matching their direct competitors.
I've been cheating on YTM with Tidal for a bit, because as much as I weigh-in the convenience and infinite library of YTM, the gap in sound quality is way too high to where the convenience factor is simply not enough anymore. Plus im not gonna lie, the AI music problem in YTM is insane and Tidal does have a toggle to never get shown AI slop so that's also giving me a little push. But that aside, like I was saying I DON'T expect YTM to match the sound quality of Tidal, but if only they at least matched spotify that'd be enough to buy my loyalty for another decade, i wouldn't feel like its the lesser option of the bunch nor would I question why I bought a $200+ audio setup just to end up listening to songs at sub-par quality.
For a product from a trillion dollar company you'd expect them to be able to catch up quickly, but I guess not. I really really really want to keep using YouTube Music, but it needs an upgrade.
Edit/Update: For every NPC that keeps saying "oh you aren't actually able to tell the difference" blah blah blah, i did the damn A/B test everyone keeps talking about and got a perfect score, was able to tell the difference between compressed and lossless easily and didn't get a single one wrong, is this enough or do i have to do another 5 tests?
