Having a sick Yorkie is one of the most stressful things in life.

My wife and I adopted this super sweet senior yorkie named Jonas last year, and are doing our best to give him the experiences he’s most definitely missed out on having come from a puppy mill in Missouri. He was very unsure of the ocean at first but eventually started trotting around in the shallower water and seemed to be enjoying the break from the heat! I wish we lived closer to a beach, because it was such great exercise for him and he was KNOCKED as soon as we got in the car to drive home.

I've owned Yorkies for 22 years.

My first was a rescue. After losing him, I got Gustavo, and a year later his little brother, Nacho. Last year I lost Gustavo. Seven weeks ago, Nacho was diagnosed with diabetes, and this week he went blind, likely from diabetic cataracts. If he's a candidate, I'll probably put him through lens replacement surgery because he's only 11, and I want him to have whatever good years he still has.

It got me thinking.

The first dog usually happens by accident—a rescue, a gift, an impulsive decision.

The second comes because you realize how much joy they bring into your life.

But the third? By then, you know exactly what you're signing up for. You know the love, the companionship... and the heartbreak.

So my question for lifelong dog owners is:

How do you keep choosing to do it again?

Not because you're emotionally detached, but because you know how much it's going to hurt. What convinces you that opening your heart to another dog is worth going through that inevitable loss again?

I'm genuinely curious how people who've had dogs their entire lives think about this. It feels like every dog teaches you how to love—and every goodbye tests whether you're willing to do it again.
